Jan Spann resigns from school board

| July 25, 2017

In case you haven’t been following the drama in the Jan Spann post, the Riverside, California Press-Enterprise reports that phony Vietnam veteran and Banning, California school board member, Janis Spann will resign from her position after she was exposed on TAH last week.

Spann wrote in an email to The Press-Enterprise on Monday, July 24, that she doesn’t want the controversy to affect Banning schools.

“I will resign from the school board as this is only going to get nastier, and I do not want to impede the board’s work with unnecessary antics,” she wrote. “I will further resign from numerous committees I serve on for the same reason. I will not let others possibly suffer by having my name attached to their work.”

However, Spann said her resignation was not an admission of guilt.

What would really be “not an admission of guilt” is a DD214 proving her service, but then she couldn’t be a martyr.

Last week, Navy veteran, Diane Box called for Spann’s resignation at a school board meeting;

“I know my decision not to fight is only going to bring me incredible pain, but I will not be bullied,” [Spann] wrote.

Spann’s martyrdom continues in the Banning Record Gazette;

“I will resign from the school board, as this will only get nastier,” she stated in an e-mail, “and I do not want to impede the board’s work with unnecessary antics.”

Further, she said “I will resign from numerous committees I serve on for the same reason. I will not let others possibly suffer by having their name attached to my work.”

Spann feels that she is being “bullied” by members of the public, leading to her decision.

Yeah, she wouldn’t have to fight – all she needs to do is show her DD214 or admit that she’s been lying all of these years.

To review the evidence against Ms. Spann;

She…claims to have been a registered nurse in Vietnam for two tours from 1968-1971. The second screen shot is from an article about her and her book.

Well the problem is that the California State University of Long Beach says she was in college during those years;

And the Army says that they’ve never heard of her;

A liar is being bullied?

Mick

Yup.

She’s the innocent ‘victim’ in all of this.

Everyone knows that.

The Old Maj

She is being mistreated by bullies in the same way that the police are racist.

desert

This filthy lying BITCH…an enlisted RN, yeh right, she is not only a liar, but stupid as the day is long! Went out and found the wounded? what frigging nurse went out and found the wounded? She just stole the glory from a hell of a lot of heroic Corpsmen and Medics! WHAT A PIECE OF LYING SHYT! Sue her for fraud!!

Ex-PH2

(snorrtt!) Not guilty? Mmmkayyy….

Next thing you know, she’ll find a way to say she was in supply or riding a desk in the Fluff War but it was all secret stuff, because she was on the Secret Squirrel missions to drop bombs on the Bad Guys from her plane.

thebesig

She must have been talking about all those times she went out and retrieved “the boys” in the battlefields of Atropia. 🙄

Frankie Cee

“IF” she were a recent veteran, she may have been on the battlefields of
Atropia. I am well acquainted with Atropia, even owning an Atropian Shepherd, (The National Dog of Atropia), so I know that she couldn’t have “retrieved” or “relieved” the boys in those battlefields of Atropia. Oh! The horrors, just thinking about those that were in the Atropian Wars, it makes me quake in appreciation of all they went through.

A Proud Infidel®™

That or her escapades in the jungles of Paprika, she might have even been at Macho Grande!

Ex-PH2

She might have been involved in the civil war between Paprika and Smellialand, too.

Anything is possible with people like her. Anything!

Silentium Est Aureum

As long as it wasn’t over Macho Grande.

I’ll never get over Macho Grande.

Pull up

OWB

Go ahead. Fight it, Jan. ‘Cause lying about military service is so difficult to prove. (Not.)

Here’s a suggestion: Quit Lying! No fighting required. No apologies necessary. No nothing needed – just stop lying and trying to make yourself into something you are not.

Never will understand why people opt to waste all that energy lying when life is soooo much easier when you don’t lie about stuff.

TxRadioguy

If you don’t want to be bullied, you fight back. You show paperwork to disprove what’s being said about you.

You don’t run and hide.

THAT is an admission of guilt.

Hondo

Possibly. But at least theoretically, it could possibly be a move to prevent further publicity by someone who desires to maintain a reasonably low public profile.

Her and her husband’s foundation’s Form 990s filed between 2007 and 2017 can be found here. At a quick glance, they seem a bit unusual – at least to me (lots of stock activity, low/no compensation for the trustees, and few disbursements other than those related to stock transactions). Can’t say how unusual that is or if anything odd is going on or not, since I’m not an expert in the field.

clamsgotlegs

http://rct.doj.ca.gov/Verification/Web/SearchResults.aspx

They have filed the appropriate paperwork for the IRS and the State of California.

It looks like they got a big grant to start out with but very few payouts for running the nonprofit work. The only problem I see is that it is a private foundation and I can’t find their website nor what their mission statement is. It’s legal on face value, but what do they do?

Perry Gaskill

It seems more like a trust or tax shelter than an active charity. Janis Spann and her husband own a business called J&J Inventories, which apparently provides car dealers in Southern California with third-party inventory audits. There could be multiple reasons for the foundation which might have to do with the Spann’s retirement, providing inheritance for offspring, or acting as a vehicle for securities investments.

This stuff is outside my lane, and I’d be reluctant to speculate too much on it.

Mark Lauer

Well, a mommy and a daddy love each other very much. Now, the daddy has a special seed and…….oh, STOCKS……I thought you said sex.
Sorry Hondo.

enlisted Major

I’m wondering if anyone will check out her half million dollar charity which no one got a penny except her?

enlisted RN. LOL that’s better than an enlisted pilot.

Silentium Est Aureum

In WWII, possibly. Not since then.

MSG Eric

Yeah, since ww2 enlisted have become too dumb to do anything technical, like fly a plane or be a Nurse.

Graybeard

Given the different levels of public education from the 1940s to present, and the sheer numbers of people needed for the war effort, it makes sense to me.

My beloved depression-era father-in-law never finished 3rd grade, but left quite an inheritance behind – working as a driller. My grandmothers were quite unusual in that both of them had gone to college to be teachers.
A college degree is more common, and public school graduates are less educated. We were more likely to have enlisted personnel who had received a true education in the 1940s.
So, yeah, the enlisted have become too dumb to do anything technical like that.

Cris

I hear all the talk about education and how we need to pump more money into it for the latest gadgets, gizmos and computers. And how we must change the curriculum to “touchy-feely” courses being offered along with “2+2=5 as long as Johnny/Jane feel good about it” math. And with all this progressive push into our centers of education, kids are still unable to do simple math or read with any comprehension. Didn’t many of the folks who built the Hoover Dam, laid out the interstate system, put a man on the moon attend one room school houses, had to do long math on paper with a pencil and read and discussed the classics?
When all else fails, go back to the basics. Schools should be a place to learn the fundamentals, not an experiment on the latest fad or a place a student can “find” themselves. One’s whole life is about finding yourself, schools are a place to learn, first and foremost. I don’t need to sit in a circle on the floor inside a classroom chewing on some blubber to relate to the Eskimo experience! Give me a book and let me read about it.

Ex-PH2

1+1 is 2 + 2 is 4 + 4 is 8.

A little arithmetic game my preschool teacher in Texas taught us when I was 4. simple, easy to understand, and a good brain exercise.

Commissioner Wretched

Well, maybe. In Common Core math, it would be different:

1 + 1 is usually 2, but sometimes can be 3, if you can prove how you got there. 3 + 2 doesn’t always equal 5; show your work and explain how you got 6 and you’ll get credit. 6 + 4 can never equal 10, of course, because then you’re into a whole new set of numbers in the next column, and if you can show how you got there, you can be a college professor.

That, too, is a good brain exercise … in slowly going mad.

Ex-PH2

Stalin would be so proud.
These uneducated children can’t balance a checkbook, don’t know how to track the money they spend, and use their brains for doorstops.
Then they get to college entrance exams and have to take remedial math and remedial English because they are uneducated.

cc senor

When I enlisted in ’63 my GT score was high enough that I had to take the OCT. One of the guys there was complaining that taking the OCT was a waste of time since he had only a 9th grade education and couldn’t go to OCS even if he wanted to. Army being what it is he had to take the test.

Years later in Viet Nam I had a SP5 that I wanted to promote and I got a lot of resistance because, again he had only a 9th grade education and the Army at that point wanted NCOs to have at least a high school education. The guy was the best damn mechanic I had ever seen and I really wanted him promoted. It took some doing, but he finally got the promotion and we served together again in the 25th ID on my finally VN tour.

Graybeard

Too many folks fixate on a piece of paper and neglect to take real-world experience into account.

Ex-PH2

Now those pieces of paper are becoming worthless unless you are in a specifically useful field like physics (NASA, electrical engineering, etc.), accounting, biology (vet medicine) – stuff like that.
Just having ‘a degree’ is not sufficient any more.

Silentium Est Aureum

Not my point, which was there haven’t been any enlisted pilots in any significant numbers since then, and certainly not in Vietnam onwards.

Graybeard

I was replying to MSG Eric’s comment, not yours SEA. Sorry for the confusion.

rgr769

I don’t think there have been any enlisted RN nurses in the Army Nurse Corps since WWII, even if there were then.

AnotherPat

Agree.

clamsgotlegs

Can anybody give me the name of her “charity” so I can check?

Hondo

See my comment above. Gives a link to the Form 990s filed between 2007 and 2015. Those contain both EIN and the foundation’s formal name and contact info.

Translating Spann’s self-serving statement. Yes, I lied about my service, but, see, if I had been in the service, I would have been so noble. See how I’m making this all about the school board, and all that work that others did on various committees, and not about my lying. Aren’t I just grand?

No, sweetheart, you’re quitting not because of anyone else or their efforts.

You’re quitting because you know you’ve been caught red-handed. And as everyone here knows, Stolen Valor is usually just the rancid cherry on the top of the shit sundae.

What else are you hiding and hope nobody else finds out, I wonder? Inquiring minds want to know.

Graybeard

Well, even though Jan Spann is still a self-absorbed lying failure who is apparently incapable of a grammatically correct paper, at least the children of that school district have a better chance of having some competent folks overseeing their education now.

If she’s used her fraud to get all these “committee” appointments, I’m guessing she’s to the level of the legal definition of fraud and needs to be charged.

It didn’t take much to out her with stolen valor, so she’s definitely being fraudulent in other ways as well.

I did not receive the following e-mail from Jan:

“But I am the victim here.

I mean I wrote a book about the Civil War and it was nominated (by myself) for a Pull-it prize. And that rejection letter hurt. I have the PS of TD because of it. How mean could those people be.

Also while writing the book I averaged a paper cut a week. I do not know how I survived that. A lessor person would have quit; or at least got smart and stopped getting paper cuts.
If these things do not qualify me to be an enlisted nurse in the Viet of the Nam with multiple Purple Hearts, then what does; having to actually be there? I have to disagree; my imaginary service is almost, just like, in a way is like the real thing…isn’t it?

Then how about my Charity? It is doing good things to help me. Not everyone can start up a charity to support themselves; I have put much effort into it.”

But being busted for stolen valor should HURT. It should be humiliating, embarrassing and uncomfortable.

After all, these posers are more than happy to accept the undeserved accolades and to bask in the admiration that come along with being a real “hero.”

Graybeard…you READ her book? 😉

Graybeard

Well, AP, I read Ex-PH2’s review of the Amazon preview pages, and since I trust Ex-PH2’s sense of language, literature, and grammar, I knew it was a bad book that I didn’t need to read.

Ex-PH2

Graybeard, you could add “Jan Spann aka Jan Lowry is a compulsive liar until proven otherwise”, if it seems appropriate.

This disgusting individual thinks that she can get away with claiming service that she did not have, when OTHER WOMEN IN VIETNAM WERE KILLED OR WOUNDED, and get away with it.

No, she cannot. She is a liar, a looter and a pillager, and does not deserve anything but pure contempt.

Graybeard

I agree. I just had to get back to work before I ran out of appropriate things to say about Jan Spann aka Jan Lowry.

Slave to a paycheck.

IDC SARC

jebbus, she still doesn’t understand the difference between an enlistment and an appointment..she’s too stupid to even fabricate a proper lie.

Graybeard

QED.

Claw

She’ll take the lie to her grave, you can bet on it.

BTW, the reporter of that article and Jann are still FB Friends with each other (and she said her misinformation to him had cost her his friendship) although Jann has now blocked her FB Friends from public viewing.

But the first thing I looked at 10 days ago was the number of FB Friends she had. As of day before yesterday when she blocked her Friends section, the count had only dropped by one. To me that says she still has 211 supporters of her lies by remaining FB Friends with her.

So much for integrity. A small number of her friends are purported VN Vets, and a few others are public service noteworthy individuals.

Perry Gaskill

Personally, I wouldn’t be too hard on the kid doing the reporting, Claw. As of a couple of days ago, I would have called it as the Record Gazette blowing off any follow-up to the original story based on some of the apparent town dynamics. The paper could have also run with just the fact she announced the resignation. Instead, today’s story wasn’t ambush, but it wasn’t softball either.

Claw

Okay, I’ll cut him some slack.

Who knows, maybe he’s the one who is still posting the TAH link to her FB page under that newest sign in name of Cindy Woo.

Wouldn’t that be a hoot?

AnotherPat

6th Army? Well, that explains her story. 6th Army’s headquarters were located in Presidio, CA during the 1960s. California. Their mission was to train troops in the US. They were NOT in Vietnam.

220th Medical Group in Vietnam…or 220th Group period? Found a list of all Medical Units in Vietnam…surprise! NO 220th…

I bet in the 1960s, she went to Presidio as a guest of someone stationed there or with an ROTC unit or a National Guard unit…and perhaps heard stories of 6th Army’s involvement in WWII…and now wants to known as a Vietnam Vet.

Since she writes books on the Civil War, am waiting for her to say “Well, there I was…listening to Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg, praising us Union Soldier Nurses..”😉

Claw

6th Army? Nope, don’t remember seeing any patch like that in RVN.

220th? Nope, that neither. Maybe she has that number seared into her brain from the last time she hopped onto the bathroom scale./smile

AnotherPat

Claw! Well, WAS going to write: ” Claw, be ashamed…you are talking about a woman’s weight!”…and then thought, “Nope, Claw’s right..that vision was probably on her mind…” gee, aren’t we bad…😲

Claw

That’s why I added the /smile.

The /smile is the Get Out Of Jail Free Card for everything that may be semi-offensive./Smile

AnotherPat

And what you wrote about those scales is probably right…my turn for the /smile..😉and as I said “aren’t we (you and I) bad…” we both will probably get in trouble with SJW for agreeing about the pounds..😎

Perry Gaskill

AP, the presidio you’re talking about is actually the Presidio of San Francisco. It was established by the Spanish government in 1776, and was serving as the U.S. 6th Army headquarters until 1994. It was also the site of Letterman Army Hospital. “Presidio” is the Spanish word for “fort,” and there were/are others in California including San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Monterey. A fifth presidio was established in Sonoma following Mexican independence in 1821.

The 6th Army was not in Viet Nam, it’s equivalent unit would have probably been considered to be MAC-V.

AnotherPat

Thanks for the update,PG. Kept thinking 6th Army HQs was part of Monterey and only used Presidio, CA as the name. Completely forgotten about San Francisco-my Dad would be rolling in his grave as he was stationed there in the late 1940s;did not know he was 6th Army (head hanging in shame). Not familiar with Spanish (always took German), so now know something “neu” for “fort” as well as Army History…thax again for the correction..😎

rgr769

Actually its equivalent would be USARV–US Army Vietnam, the command HQ for all US military units Division level and below, excluding the advisor function units working with the ARVN.

Perry Gaskill

I’m not so sure. According to various sources in addition to Wiki, USARV was a country-wide corps-level logistical service and support unit. It ran, for example, the ports in Saigon, Cam Ranh Bay, and Da Nang.

USARV was apparently roughly equivalent in scale to the corps-level field forces (I FF and II FF) which corresponded to the geographic military regions (actually MR but called “Corps”) II and III. Central Highlands units such as the 4th ID, and 173rd Airborne in Bin Dinh, for example, fell under I Field Force in Nha Trang, not USARV in Long Binh. The I FF in turn was controlled by MAC-V in Saigon. Being joint services, MAC-V also had control of Navy, Marine, and Air Force units.

And I probably just confused the bejeebers out of anyone who wasn’t in the Army…

IDC SARC

“Nurses didn’t enlist. Do people think they just fell out of the sky? I did what I did, and I’m extremely proud of what I did.”

I believe she’s references vets on FB which pointed out or at least attempted to point out to her that Officers don’t enlist per se, they receive appointments.

She just doesn’t get it. If for some reason she went the enlisted route she wouldn’t have served as a Nurse and it makes her claims of what she did in Nam even less believable.

gotta luv the dumb ones

The Stranger

Just messing with ya. The subject of this post, however, didn’t do she should take a long walk off a short pier!

In addition to the fact that there were no enlisted members of the US Army Nurse branch, there was no Army nurse in RVN with the job title “medevac nurse” who rode dustoff helos to the bush to recover WIA’s, period.
