Greg “Lakota” Witter, another stellar career down the crapper
The folks at Military Phonies send us their work on Greg Earl Witter who claims that he retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant in 2010, that he was with Task Force Ranger in Somalia, that he has combat tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, that he was a Special Forces soldier, and that he was the lone survivor of his final mission and spent a year at Walter Reed recovering from his injuries which abruptly ended his career;
Journalists like his stories, and who wouldn’t;
The truth is close, but not as close as ol’ Greg would like you to think. He left the Army as a staff sergeant after 11 years, he served with a special forces unit as a “voice interceptor” in the Alabama National Guard in the mid-90s. When he reenlisted, he went to the 82d Airborne Division and it looks like he spent most of his time in the 2d Brigade. According to his awards, he has one rotation to Afghanistan, he earned an Expert Infantryman Badge along with a Combat Infantryman Badge (a stellar accomplishment right there).
As near as I can determine, that Task Force 141 which gets a mention in the Argus Leader article above is a Call of Duty video game unit – so that part of his biography might be true, but I’m pretty sure that combat veterans don’t want to hear about his exploits on his couch over the weekend. And, yes, that picture of him at the top of the page seems to be a mugshot.
He also makes claims that he is a Native-American Indian and there seems to be some doubts about that, as well, but you can read about it at the Military Phonies link. That’s outside my lane.

I agree. I think the answer is simple; because they of people should know better.
The ones who make it up entirely have never served, never understood what it means to put on the uniform or serve in combat. They just don’t know any better. Guys like this do or should know better. I think that’s what makes them worse.

Just finished reading the Military Phonies takedown. Dude has all his ducks in a row. I hope he seriously considers starting a business named Many Points Logistics. Sky’s the limit!
He will just have to make sure that he stacks the senior executives with some shady characters. He can then use their past indiscretions (bankruptcies, DUI’s, assaults, restraining orders) as leverage in order to get them to go out on career suicide missions. Is this guy a wannabe biker, too?

Too many photographs of little children, plus himself with his shirt off adds up to a bad combination, deserving of further investigation.
That comment about a fellow soldier dying in his arms definitely indicates a phony, because genuine combat veterans don’t ever volunteer such information.

To be fair, he was 11 series for most of the period 2001 to 2006, according to the records above.
The fact he got out at that point isn’t a huge issue with me. You’d be surprised at the number of mid-career NCO’s and officers at the 10-12+ year point that find staying until 20 just isn’t worth it, or a much better opportunity comes along.
But pissing all over that service the way he has? No excuse.

Suspect things are catching up to this guy. He says on his Gregory Lakota Facebook page, which seems to be the most currently active, that he is moving to the Philippines and has a plane ticket booked for Tuesday September 1st, 2015. Claims he wants to open a body building gym there.
Also says to have found a Filipino model on a dating site that currently lives there.
It could be all true, or it could be an effort to shed the “Lonewolf” legend and go for the “Lakota” story in a country with women and others not familiar with his conflicting stories.

Award of the OSR for service in either Korea or a combat-tour location like Afghanistan requires having enough service to fulfill the regulatory requirements for short tour credit under hardship tour rules. In particular, for Afghanistan the governing reg requires 9 mo continuous service or 11 mo within a 24 mo period for OS tour credit.

Korea tours can be and sometimes are curtailed short of 9 mo; ditto service in Afghanistan. It’s thus possible to get the ACM or KDSM (each requires 30+ days svc consecutive in the AO) but not have enough time in the AO to receive OS tour credit – and thus no OSR.
Speaking of awards, I was amazed to discover recently that my retirement award (MSM) was not posted in my 201 file. Fortunately, I have the original and need to fill out a form to update my records. My former commander was kind of flaky so I’m not all that surprised I guess.
JimV: ensure you send a copy of the orders along with a copy of the cert. I’ve seen info that leads me to believe that the records correction/custodian branches FINALLY figured out how easy it was for people to get fake award certificates and are now requiring orders for such corrections.

Should have had a language, too, however many NG SF units will slot people before they’re qualified and THEN send them to school. For language courses, the failure rate is rather high, no record of attending DLI tells me he never even made it in.
Unfortunately there is a long and dishonorable tradition of support guys claiming to be SF and because they were actually assigned to the battalion, know the lingo and have earned some of the awards (all slots are supposed to be on jump status) they can often fool people for quite a while.
Yeah, no DLI. Maybe he didn’t score high enough on the DLAB to make it into even a CAT I language.

I may be the only one to defend Greg, he put me throghh hell personally. But he is not a child molester, that is his son in the pictures. He does very much suffer from ptsd. I have experienced it first hand. He is a very funny yet confused person. We no longer are in contact but in his defender, we all have are demons. It’s not fair to lie about your life. But something brought him to the point where he felt like he had to in order to get attention. I was surprised to find this information on him. I don’t blame anyone for their thoughts about this. But we are all human.
Know this guy (not personally, just through email and stuff). He actually did come to the Philippines for a couple months (I’ve lived here for 8 years), but then one night just took off after blocking everyone he knew here on Facebook. Guess he owes some people money down in Boracay.
Anyway, knew something wasn’t right about the guy, being medically retired myself (USN, 15 years and change in service – non combat related injuries). Found out he’s alive and well, and actually (in my opinion) crossed the fucking line this time, accepted $2500 for a new car from Wounded Warriors of South Florida (via Facebook).
So, what to do?
That is true Manila. He actually befriended an old Vietnam Vet that has helped him with the car. It is unbelievable to me that someone has the balls to actually do this. Good thing is that the word is out around here. I received an email a few days ago for an acquaintance telling us what his real name is. I have many vets that work for me and this will not be pretty.

But it all comes out… He has so many different lies he can’t keep them all straight. I feel for the people that have reached out to help him. However, this man has made a big mistake!!!
