Open Carry costs Oregon man his gun

| October 9, 2014

KPTV reports that a fellow in Gresham, Oregon was openly carrying his handgun while talking to his cousin on a street corner. I’m sure that he was feeling pretty secure with his gun outside his pants for all the honest world to see;

They said a man approached them and asked for a cigarette. Talk eventually turned to the victim’s new purchase, before the robber pulled his own gun from his waistband and said, “I like your gun, give it to me,” according to police.

The victim handed over his gun and the suspect ran away.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned black man, 19 to 23 years old, 6’1″ with a skinny build. He had black, wavy hair and was clean cut, except for a small patch of facial hair on his chin. The man was wearing gray sweatpants, a white T-shirt and flip-flops.

Apparently, both guns were .22 long rifle. I wonder how safe Mr. Open Carry is feeling today.

The whole article states that he was on the street corner at 2AM…I’m almost positive that, that little decision led to him losing his gun more than the Open Carry.

I OC all the time (about 50/50 with CC) and no one has ever tried to take mine. I also look a little on the protective side.

It comes down to personal protection, make yourself a hard target, don’t go to places you have no business being at, and keep BOTH eyes open.

ahm, no. Open carriers have been robbed and even murdered in broad daylight. Happened here in Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and the murder was featured on America’s most wanted many years ago. Open carrier was in a bad neighborhood, when someone approached him in a friendly manner, then pulled out a gun and shot him in the head. Open carrier lost his gun, his wallet and his life. Moral of the story is don’t let the bad guy know you have a firearm with you. Your firearm just makes you more of a target. Guns are like gold on the street they can be sold quite easily. Keep it in your pants. Keep the bad guy guessing.

TacticalTrunkMonkey

What was he doing in a bad part of town?

ChipNASA

He was Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown. 😀

UpNorth

Glad I had put the coffee down before I got to your comment.

GruntSgt

Had a razor in his shoe and fled the scene in his dropped top Cadillac.

JBS

And..At least Leroy kept his .32 in his pocket.

jonp

Yeah, but he wasn’t serious about it. It was just for fun

jason

He was in a bad part of town because he was a contractor doing work.

TacticalTrunkMonkey

Yeah…”contractor” doing “work”.

When did “Street Side Pharmacist” become contract work?

PavePusher

Well, completely unarmed people (and CCers as well, I’m sure) have had similar things happen to them too.

There isn’t any evidence to show that this is any kind of significant statistical trend, so I’m not too worried about it.

Moral of the story is: Don’t sell fear and panic.

Old Trooper

It wouldn’t have mattered if he was conceal carrying. He would still have lost his life, his wallet, and his gun. It was the neighborhood he was in that was the defining factor.

Old Trooper

That was in response to jason.

Old Trooper

Well, it sounds like in both instances, the bad guy got the drop on them, anyway, so concealed or out in the open, it didn’t matter, because the victims weren’t paying attention to their environment.

jason

my point exactly. it was the gun that brought attention to the contractor to begin with. The bg may have just ignored the guy or approached him without being prepared to actually shoot him. Moot point everything is conjecture. But even in the “art of war” written thousands of years ago one of the basic concepts was to keep your capabilities hidden from your enemies. Keep them guessing.

TacticalTrunkMonkey

If you don’t practice the concealed draw, you aren’t doing yourself much good anyways.

Open Carry:
-Faster draw time, less training required, often a deterant.

Concealed Carry:
-Element of surprise, requires more training.

I am for both carries. I support 2A in ANY form.
I am just saying, that if you are going to conceal carry, practice practice practice. You have to practice the carry, the draw, and the shooting from “fuckered” up positions *what happens if your gun gets caught in your shirt and you don’t have a great grip*

This dude bought the gun, and had it a few hours…doesn’t seem like much time to get used to concealed carry to me.

David

but all he federales say they could have had him any day…

Situational awareness. Open carry, concealed carry, doesn’t matter. If you aren’t actively checking your environment and letting those approach you know you are checking them, you’re a victim. Plain and simple.

Old Trooper

Damn straight.

TacticalTrunkMonkey

Agreed.

Azygos

Does anyone know where Obama’s son was at the time?

Friend S. Wilkins

LMAO!! I’m sorry but your comment just cracked me up. And I’m not afraid to admit it. I am a bit of a racist myself.

Hondo

Personally, I think some people should open carry.

It attracts the criminals’ attention by providing a well-marked target, and thus gives those carrying concealed more reaction time.

FatCircles0311

lol on the street @ 2am then the stereotypical long white tee hoodrat approaches.

What could go wrong?

This guy is too stupid to be carrying in the first place.

Sidebar: I no longer let strangers bum cigs. Its a common tactic to get in close while distracting you.

Derbyshire is right, even if his article wasn’t PC.

2/17 Air Cav

Yeah, he committed the sin of stupidity for all of the reasons given plus one more: He didn’t have a backup to pull as the robber departed. It’s nice to have a backup.

Twist

That is why the only time s I open carry is when hunting or salmon fishing. I live in bear country, plus this being Alaska, when I’m fishing every person I meet is carrying.
