Even Mt. St. Helens has glacial snow that does not melt off despite the lava dome in the crater’s center. It’s due to microclimate, the shadows produced by the walls of the crater.
My yard can be completely free of snow, except for the 3 feet of shadowed area where my neighbor’s roof blocks the sun. It really is that simple. It’s a few degrees difference in air temperature, nothing more. It is happening in a lot of places now. Does not meet the ‘warming’ theme. This planet is full of places like that.
NASA keeps claiming a great deal of warming, but they also disclosed that they are not using raw temperature data. The changes somehow always go up. I brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “cooking the books.”

Thank you per the offer. I think I can get more ID info. prior to submitting. Just too much smells with the Recon thing. Onetime after several, several beers he mentioned being at Khe Sanh. I was twenty yrs. at the time. A couple years later I found out he’s five years younger then me. I brought up Khe Sanh again and that he must have been 15 yrs. old during the siege. He countered that he meant they had patrolled through the area during a later time. Not what was mentioned the first time.
Khe Sahn combat base was closed and abandoned in July, 1968. It was reoccupied by the ARVn and some US support units for two monhs in Feb-March of 1971 to support Opn Lam Son 719 in Laos. I flew over it in an OV-10A in June, 1971. The NVA were so determined that it never be used again that they dug ditches across the runway and erected barbed wire fences across the runway. The only way your buddy was in Khe Sahn in late 1968-1970 was as a 15 year old NVA soldier.

I flew aerial recon flights searching for possible LZ sites for my Lrrp teams in the back seat of OV-10 Broncos out of Da Nang AFB. Although I never measured that small rear cargo bay, I doubt you could get more than two people back there with rucks weapons, and all chuted up. I never heard of a two man recon team. I call BS. We (Co.G/75thInf)never had recon teams smaller than six men. 1st Recon Bn of the 1st MarDiv also used six man teams. I also never heard of any recon team being inserted by parachute, as it was too high risk and made no tactical sense. All aerial inserts inside RVN I ever heard about were by Helo, usually just before first light.

Thanks for the input. Didn’t make any sense to me either, plus they were supposed to be night jumps. Never any mention that I recall about how many team members. See my post above too.
According to the 3rd Recon Bn website, the Force Recon company did patrol northern RVN along the DMZ. Every thing on their website indicates helo inserts, just as my company utilized. As with most of the northern portion of the country, terrain and jungle would not afford a feasible DZ, especially for a night drop. I also question his claim of about 90 jumps in his 3 yr enlistment. I served almost 6 yrs on AD and 1 and 1/2 yrs in the 19th SFGA. Except for about 8 months when I was a rifle company commander in RVN, I was on jump status; I have only about 30-35 jumps, including jump school,15 mos with the 2/509th PIR and SFOC. As for the ability to jump five people out of an OV-10, first the aircraft would have to be unarmed and the back ejection seat would likely have to be removed. The OV-10As I flew in had 2,000 rounds of M-60 ammo in canisters filling the forward a third of that small cargo area behind the rear seat. According to several websites, USMC and USN OV-10s in RVN were always armed, unlike some of the USAF ones. So, I still call BS.

Marine Observation Squadron 1 (VMO-1) flew OV-10As and OV-10Ds out of MCAS New River, NC up until the squadron was decommissioned in the early ’90s, and they routinely carried and delivered sticks of 5 static line jumpers while supporting parachute training for 2nd Force Recon and 2nd Recon Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. A very good friend of mine was in 2nd Force Recon in the ’80s, and he conducted many training jumps from OV-10s. (I think that ANGLICO may have also bagged some training jumps with the OV-10s, but I can’t remember specifically.)
The way that it was done was the 5 Marines who were going to jump would sit “nuts to butts” on the deck of the OV-10’s cargo bay facing aft. The OV-10 would then come in as low and as fast as the ol’ OV-10 Bronco could go, then pop into the vertical over the intended drop zone. When the aircraft reached the appropriate altitude, the jumpers would literally slide out the back of the cargo bay and exit the aircraft.
Anyone who attended one of the old MAGTF Capabilities Demonstrations that II MEF used to put on during the ’80s out at LZ Bluebird at Camp Lejeune would have seen the OV-10s performing this method of delivering parachutists. It was always one of the highlights of the show.

I’m not voicing an opinion here, but it appears that she’s done something that really pissed off a lot of people. I think it bears looking into. This is a cool story. A 16-year veteran of the Martinsburg, WV police department was recently promoted to sergeant. He is a K-9 guy and loves his work and his dog, Argos. Well, the PD policy does not allow for supervisors to be K-9 handlers. So, after talking it over with his wife, he took a voluntary demotion in order to keep Argos. BTW, the policy is brand-spanking new. The officer made no stink about it and issued a nice statement that his decision was best for him, his family, Argos, and the department.
