President Donald Trump reportedly ordered the military to go after the cartels

| August 8, 2025

According to the New York Times, sources have confirmed that President Donald Trump has recently issued an order causing the Pentagon to start using the military against Latin American drug cartels. These are the cartels identified as terrorist organizations. The military is reportedly creating plans on how they will carry this order out. The orders previously signed by Trump identified cartels operating within the United States. If these reports are true, then it’s possible that this order would be applicable to actions within the United States against cartel operations.

From Fox 25:

President Donald Trump recently signed an order directing the Pentagon to begin using military force against Latin American drug cartels that the administration has deemed a terrorist organization, sources confirmed to The New York Times.

The anonymous source said military officials have already started drawing up options for how the military could go after the groups.

Shortly after returning to office in January, Trump signed an order designating cartels and other organizations as foreign terrorist organizations and specially designated global terrorists.

“It is the policy of the United States to ensure the total elimination of these organizations’ presence in the United States,” the order read in part.

Since signing the order, the administration has been specifically targeting Venezuelan and Mexican organizations. The State Department in February designated Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, and several other organizations as foreign terrorist organizations.

Officials said the groups constituted “a national security threat beyond that posed by traditional organized crime.”

It’s about time we decided we wanted to be serious about the drug war, it’s been going on since the 70s and we’ve been losing the entire time.

David

We haven’t ever really prosecuted the War on Drugs. We focused on trying to bust penny-ante users and rarely used effective means against importerds and dealers. There’s too much money in drugs for a money-oriented society to truly want to fight them.

5JC

No. No. Mostly yes.

It kind of depends upon who you mean by “we”. Every law enforcement agency fights the war drugs in their own way. On some things (such as marijuana) some states have surrendered. This is why the cities all smell like weed smoke where weed is legal. Same reason I don’t go to those cities anymore.

You definitely have bought into a very mistaken perception about who is doing what about what about what. You also show a very naive understanding of how the drug trade works. There is no “focus” on busting “users”. If there were than the arrests would all be about public intoxication, because those are the “users”.

The larger agencies don’t care much about users nor do they care much about possession of small amounts of drugs, other than to track the to and fro of the dealers.

Just in the last few days:

Since the average MJ sale is around 20grams, that would be about 68,000 drug sales.

This would be about 16,000 sales.

If you do some searching you will find that these size busts are fairly routine by state police who target the larger smugglers.

The issue is that there is way more demand than police to keep up with it. After the Defund the Police Movement the under strength law enforcement agencies are even harder pressed to deal with the problem. The last four years of completely open border drove down the price of street drugs, but that trend has begun to dramatically reverse in 2025.

Marijuana is far less harmful than alcohol. Especially when it’s Federally inspected and quality assured so there are no pesticides or other nasty stuff.
Smoking anything is bad for you.
Having legal cannabis products that can be eaten, drank or vaped is good harm reduction.

5JC

“Less harmful” is an interesting thought, still doesn’t mean I want to be exposed to it 24/7 by being in a city.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Fair enough.
I don’t like being around drunk folks, so I stay away from bars.

5JC

Well ok, so long as there is a clear and present danger.

My late Uncle relieved Black Jack down Mexico away and his troopers used to trade the locals for booze and smokes using horses that they were supposed to take out and shoot. Worked for a bit until one of the locals comes over with a receipt from the swap signed by George Washington. Uncle shot himself in his femur while he was unlocking his door. Lived in Flatbush Brooklyn and was mugged 11 times from the Daily News story which I don’t have anymore. Flatbush was all Italien, Irish and Jewish when the demigraphics changed and they all moved out to Long Island NY, Jersey Etc.except Uncle and he died at his door.Sorry about going on another tangent.

“Sorry about going on another tangent”

At least you didn’t slip on the slope of the curve.

I like the tangents here

Sure, let’s keep building fences and walls higher and higher.
Force them to dig tunnels like the Viet of the Nam Cong.

Aren’t they doing that already to get into our country?

Yes, please excuse my TAH sarcasm disorder.

Amateur Historian

Ah. Gotcha. While I do employ sarcasm, I do have difficulty recognizing when others are employing sarcasm.

Since the AFNG has a significant number of A-10’s that would give them a nice option for target practice.
