Report: Would-be thief flees when Cope woman fires shots

By MARTHA ROSE BROWN
A Cope woman almost lost her van’s catalytic converter to a would-be thief, but he ran away after she fired shots, according to a sheriff’s office incident report.

The woman called deputies at 12:33 p.m. Thursday after she heard someone knock on the door of her Ember Drive home.

She then checked on her surveillance cameras and saw a male with a blue sedan.

She said the man stood in her yard as if he was checking to see if anyone was at home.

A moment later, the man appeared to be underneath her 1996 white Ford Econoline van.

The woman “felt as if she needed to take action,” the incident report states.

She walked out of her front door and shot her Hi-Point 9mm handgun toward the man’s direction.

Quite a start to the work week, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes. Three achieving room temperature with an apparent unfortunate victim, none inconvenienced and an unknown number of witnesses and a catalytic converter thief in the wind.

When Pa was at home the gun always lay across those two wooden hooks above the door. … The gun was always loaded, and always above the door so that Pa could get it quickly and easily, any time he needed a gun. — Laura Ingalls Wilder

Nice smokepole.

No shooting at property thieves here in Florida.
You have to be in imminent danger to shoot at someone.
Stealing your car or it’s catalytic converter is not enough

Some took the last train from Clarksville, another can’t cope with a thief and I don’t give one iota for the La perp. Prolly a little sketchyness on both side in the C’Ville story. HT and a pun block to Jeff LPH.

Firestick a .50 Hawken or a .36 Pennsylvania Lancaster? CVA Kit? Pic was a little fuzzy at the trigger(s) and the muzzle.

David

Kinda hard to be sure due to the perspective, but none of the above look right. Most Hawkins replicas have octagon, not round barrels and have a patchbox on the right side of the stock. CVA/Traditions use a two piece stock with a brass spacer between sections. Bore looks to be a fair bit larger than the ramrod so .45-.54 caliber is likelier than .36. Unknown percussion gun to me.

That’s an unusual hammer with a deep forward curve. Never saw a Hawkin or Pennsylvania rifle with that sort of hammer.

5th/77th FA

Yeah Roger that rgr1480. That’s why I was leaning toward a kit like the old CVAs when I looked at the upgraded pic. But if it’s an original piece, there was an azz load of independent gunsmiths “back in the day” that had their own way doing doing things. Could even be an Eli Whitney design/build. Everybody remembers Eli for the cotton gin, but a lot of folks don’t think about all the gunz he and his boys made. IIRC he was the FIRST to use standard parts and an assembly line process in his manufacturing.

Either way, it’s a nice piece and if it’s orphaned, I’ll give it a home over it’s choice of fireplace mantles or doorways.

David

Almost looks like two hammers… could that be a side by side? My phone fuzzes out the image. Also appears to be very odd trigger and trigger guard, too.

ArmyATC

It appears to be a kit gun, so it could be either one. I’m gonna go with the Hawken. The butt doesn’t have the pronounced curve that the Pennsylvania Lancaster and other flintlock rifles of the time had. Just to be completely confusing, it could be neither. Though it’s hard to see, I don’t detect the brass barrel pin that both rifles had.

YA got me on that one 5th/77th. Got a late start due to a pain in the neck head cold from the cold front weather change down here. Went down to the mid 70’s, and it’s killing me.

The little girl from the Little Village neighborhood who was shot while while trick or treating with her parents is now at home and doing well.

The 15-year-old boy who shot her (twice) was looking for a 30-year-old rival gang member. He is charged with two felonies, attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Someone please tell me what a 15-year-old kid is doing with a handgun, period? And the kid in SoCal who shot four other teens at school and then took his own life – same thing: what was he doing with a gun, period?

ArmyATC

I bought both of my sons a rifle and a pistol when they were young. The difference is they weren’t twisted psychos or gang bangers.

Hi, I’ve been reading older “Valor Vultures” for several months now and the last update was Ken Woerheide. Is tah not posting valor thieves any longer? If they are how do I find them?

Ex-PH2

They’re still here. It appears a new one is coming up soon, too.
