Friday on MSNBC’s All In, March for Our Lives co-founder David Hogg discussed what he believed was the origin of mass shootings in the United States.
Hogg said, “I think it comes down to reckoning with our history and our history of white supremacy in the United States. The fact that we live in a post-genocidal society oftentimes that was orchestrated by the United States government in that if we want to talk about mass shootings, we need to recognize the massive number of indigenous mass shootings that was conducted by the United States government. I think back to the battle of Wounded-Knee and the several hundred Native Americans, predominately men, woman, and children that were slaughtered by the United States government back in the nineteenth century. And how that is never discussed as a mass shooting. And that was wrong because those people were not armed, and we were stealing their land.”

Killed “by” guns? Man, my guns must be severely defective, because they never do anything except lie there inanimately unless I pick them up and operate them. People commit murder with all manner of items, some of which were never intended to be used as weapons. The same is true of accidental deaths. The car you drive is a far deadlier weapon than any AR or AK.
You know what is far more dangerous than any firearm, and is also present in millions of American households? And nobody ever seems to notice despite the number of children who die? Swimming pools. Swimming pools are the one and only thing I have ever seen that boast a solid 100% mortality rate with kids. The common denominator among all of them: the kid knew how to swim. I have seen a bunch of swimming pool drownings, and every one of those kids died. Every single one. As a knowledgeable and responsible father, I will never have one at my house.
You don’t like guns? Fine. Don’t buy one. You have neither the moral right nor the intellectual standing to deny them to anyone else.

Here’s some truth for you, Snookums. Last year there were approximately 36,000 deaths attributed to firearms and firearms ownership. The majority of those were suicides. Next were homicides. The rest were accidents and other such incidents.
The last is easy enough to lower with firearms safety training. But the left doesn’t like that. A few years back the NRA wanted to institute firearms safety training in all public elementary schools. The training would teach young children to not touch guns and if they find one to tell an adult. The left lost its collective mind, accusing the NRA of trying to “brainwash” children into becoming new gun owners. So tell us, who really “cares for the children?”

Of those 127 cities, most murders occur in 50. It’s narrowed down even further to certain neighborhoods within theose 50 cities and to the criminal behavior of people in those neighborhoods. So if you don’t live in certain neighborhoods in certain cities and aren’t involved in gangs, drugs, or other criminal endeavors, your risk of being a victim of “gun violence” is around 1%.
Oh, yeah. Homicide, to include homicide with guns, is down by about 50% since it’s highest levels in the mid-1990s.

I forgot to add on my above comment was that nine US presidents were members of the NRA. Eight were or are Republicans and JFK was the only Democrat. I typed Democrat because in his era, they were Democrats and not demoRats. Other thing is that around 61% of Republicans are NRA members and 36% of democrats are NRA members. In order to put in context the Battle of Wounded Knee, it might be useful to skip back a few years to 1876 when Custer’s battalion of 7th Cavalry was wiped out at the Little Bighorn. What prompted the Little Bighorn battle was that Lakota Sioux under Sitting Bull had been conducting raids into the Crow reservation, and the Crow had requested help from the Army.
Fast forward to 1890 when the Lakota had been ostensibly pacified, but Sitting Bull was on the verge of joining a radical element of the Sioux who had already become part of a new Ghost Dance religion. Those who followed Ghost Dance believed all whites could be eliminated. Among other things, this would be enabled by the wearing of shirts which would make the wearer bullet-proof.
One day in December, the Ghost Dance issue reached a critical point when a group of tribal police tried to arrest Sitting Bull and he was killed in the resulting melee. Armed followers of the Ghost Dance and others, including some involved in the Sitting Bull shooting, then fled the Sioux reservation. The 7th Cavalry was ordered to pursue, disarm, and return the renegade Lakota back to their reservation.
On December 29th, the Lakota band had been rounded up at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. An attempt to disarm the Lakota became problematic when one of the Lakota men refused to surrender his weapon, and resulted in a gunfight in which an estimated 290 of the Lakota died, including 200 women and children.
The 7th Cavalry lost 25 KIA and 39 WIA that day. After-action reports that officers lost some control of their men are probably accurate. David Hogg’s contention that Wounded Knee was a one-sided “slaughter” of unarmed innocents is not.

Lots of stolen guns in Chicago and a lot of anti-gun laws. Couple years ago a boxcar on a siding in the crime ridden area (south & west of downtown) gave up 111 Ruger weapons. No background check required, only a bolt cutter. Not an isolated incident but a recurring crime in the train yards.
