Akron man, 73, with gun under pillow detains burglary suspect until police arrive

By Rick Armon
Daniel McGown was uneasy when he went to bed Monday night — so much so that he slept with a loaded Sig Sauer 9mm handgun under his pillow.

He would need it in the morning.

McGown, 73, a retired business litigation attorney, held a burglary suspect at gunpoint inside his Crosby Street home in Akron’s West Hill neighborhood early Tuesday morning until police arrived.

“I pointed the pistol at him and I said, ‘If you don’t move, I won’t shoot you.’ And he said, ‘Don’t shoot me,’” he said about the encounter.

McGown had returned home Monday following several days visiting family to find that someone had used a shovel on the front porch to pry open the front door at the two-story house, ransacking the place and stealing a shotgun, rifle, three handguns, ammunition, two laptops and other items. He reported the burglary to police.

But the burglar or burglars had left several items behind such as televisions — perhaps, he thought, with the intent to return later to get them.

That’s why McGown, who usually sleeps in a first-floor bedroom, slept upstairs with the Sig Sauer handgun that wasn’t stolen.

Just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, he heard someone ringing his doorbell. He didn’t answer.

Try to keep your home looking “lived in” while away.

Lights on timers with variability.

Tv and radio on timers.

Porch/outside lights on night sensors and/or motion sensors.

Stop mail and paper delivery.

Have trusted family or acquaintance stop by occasionally to remove junk papers in driveway, park in driveway, putter around, etc.

There are high-tech/interactive solutions also.

Avoid energy-saving blackout look. Avoid one light always on “burglar beacon”. Don’t have obvious “gun” decals or leave gun-stuff visible to window-peekers.

Nothing worth your effort here, slick. Besides, someone is always home.

“…someone had used a shovel on the front porch to pry open the front door at the two-story house, ransacking the place and stealing…”

This is why you’re supposed to put such things away in the shed, which should have a lock, or the garage, which should have a secret squirrel code lock. It’s also the reason you’re supposed to lock your bang toys and their fuel in a safe. I thought that was basic stuff.

Who writes this shit?

“A male entered the store with a firearm and attempted to rob the store to which he discharged his firearm at the robbery suspect several times, striking him,” said Philadelphia Police Captain Scott Drissel.

I know. The English teacher in me cringed when I read that.
It appears to be a direct quote of Capt. Drissel – and sometimes what one says under the pressure of a press conference isn’t quite the way one would phrase it in other circumstances, so I’m giving the good Capt. a C for his oral presentation.

When it’s a cop being quoted, Sister Mary Grace bangs her forehead on the wall and goes fishing.

I believe the po-po are required to speak in Neutrality as much as possible. Also, it appears that Gobbledygook is increasing in po-po public speaking engagements.

Even small victories are still victories. A DRT, WOT, and Fresh Fish for Bubba & The Boyz. We’ll take it.

Ya tried to fake us out with that Kimber. Close, but no seegar.

The news video stops before the bang.

In one way, I understand – it is hard on the perps’ friends and family to see the moment of death.

But on the other hand, it may leave an impression on wannabe’s and make ’em think twice about their life choices. (And one could argue that folks see a lot of phony shootings on TV or movies so that a real-life one wouldn’t make a significant impression.)

Nice looking Kimber 380. I have the Kimber Ultra carry in .45 and to field strip it for cleaning, the gun comes with an EL shaped piece of spring steel that you have to insert through the recoil spring guide to capture the spring. A first for me.
