Happy Halloween TAH! Ready to give candy to the kids? My Halloween lights/decorations have been up for this month. Tomorrow, they come down and the Thanksgiving lights/decorations go up.
This day is also known as Dia de Muertos/El Día de Los Muertos or “Day of the Dead”. Unlike Halloween, this is the first of three back-to-back religious days in areas that observe this day. The days that follow are All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2).

In all the years since I set up a Firebase Magnolia, I’ve had 2 Trick or Treaters. This is a tiny town and the main residential area is not near me. The community does a trunk or treat gig for the kiddies at the school gym. I’ll buzz up to the big city K Roger store tomorrow and load up on the discounted bags of candy bars.
The surrounding neighborhood apartments pack the cars full of “trick or treaters” (i.e., 17-30 year olds) and go up to any door (regardless of whether or not the house is completely darkened, or if it’s as late as 2300…yup, that really happened…) looking for more free stuff.
Fuckin’ dirtbags.
And what happened to the Charlie Brown Halloween special? Did Peter the pumpkin eater get offended?

My dad was born on Halloween, in 1909, he was a WWII Marine and would have been 110 today. He died 17 years ago last Saturday and I wish I had spent more time with him in his later years. He always loved having a big pancake supper on his birthday, I think I’ll carry that on tonight. Ya’ll take care.

I didn’t even think about it being a pun until I just read your comment. It must have went over my head. Good catch. Flatt & Scruggs sang together for a number of years until they broke up. I had their bluegrass waxed (records) albums years ago along with a shitload of other very early Bluegrass and C&W records back in the 60’s.

It was originally called vocal group harmony or R&B vocal group harmony. I donated all my 45’s and 33.5 record albums to the Hofstra University LI, NY DJ’s who still run the R&B Serenade program on Sunday’s from 4-6PM if you want to listen to on your computer if you live out of state. The records were mostly all re issues and 2nd pressings so no real value.

Mother Nature is dumping 4++ inches of snow on us. This is 6 months since the last snowfall on April 30, which gave us three inches of that fluff on the yard, the roof, and my front steps. And now it’s back!!!

Why we can’t have nice things….. In 2005, a doctor by the name of Dr. Khandakar Ahad was working at the Murfreesboro, Tenn. Veterans Affairs hospital as an ophthalmologist. In 2005, Ahad says he was denied religious accommodations on Fridays to pray during the noon hour. The accommodation was denied for some reason which is unclear. He sued the hospital over the denial. (I can’t find the outcome of that lawsuit.) That same year, Ahad performed surgery on a patient but operated on the wrong eye. Two more times in the next three years, Ahad operated on the wrong eyes of patients. The hospital investigated and suspended Ahad’s operating privileges but allowed him to remain on staff as a diagnostician with no loss in title or pay. Ahad claimed the revocation of privileges was due to his religious accommodation request and was an act of retaliation against him. He also claimed that he was getting poor evaluations based on his age, race, sex and religion. The EEOC denied his claims and Ahad filed suit against the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the agency itself. The claims were all dismissed by the court. Ahad appealed Now, in 2019, 11 friggin’ years after the revocation of operating privileges, the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the lower court’s decision and ruled that the hospital revocation of Ahad’s operating privileges were not based on any claims put forth by Ahad or retaliation. Eleven years this clown who was a menace to patients was in court trying to protect his job without any thought or concern to the people and patients he was literally harming. One “wrong site” operation is a mistake. Two “wrong site” operations is negligent. Three “wrong site” operations is “get your butt out of here and don’t come back.” Yet this is the government and the protections of employees are different than in the real world. Second, a doctor that fucks up that badly should be fired, but he kept his job with full pay and everything. UFB. And he’s got the balls to complain about that? Shouldn’t he be lucky he’s not being sued out of existence?

That one time I sneezed and farted at the same time? It’s a good thing that they don’t teach you to cover your ass when you fart. That would have turned out ugly. At least I covered my mouth. People thought that my shit fart was the natural reaction to covering one end while sneezing.
I tried to cover up my shifarts. One time I was in the computer lab. I kept typing even though I farted. The problem with shifarts is that the stink does not go away like a fart stink, and the epicenter stays. It did not help that I was sitting a little higher. I just kept typing. People were cursing and swearing. People were mad at me but I kept typing.
Another time, I held fire on my fart, because I knew that it was going to end up as a shifart. After a while, I had to let fire. But, I tried to detract from the act by shaking my head left and right while nodding yes. I let drool flow down from my mouth. It did not work. In hind sight, I could simply have gone to the toilet and sat down. I would not have waited as long as I did.

I always enjoyed eating at The Big Texan when I went through Amarillo and it was fun to watch those taking the 72 Ounce Challenge, I never saw anyone win it and when I asked a Waitress there how often someone succeeds at it she told me only about one in eight succeed, and given the $72 tab if they don’t, I see how they make money off of that!

THE classiest resignation I saw during my time I ate there was from a well-dressed Gentleman in a suit and coat who slowly and gingerly tied his napkin around the steak knife and slowly stuck it into the remainder of his steak like he was raising a Flag of truce. Like I said earlier, if one doesn’t eat it ALL in an hour or less, they have to ante up $72 for the meal and with only about one in eight making it, they profit from the challenge. My response? VIVA CAPITALISM!

Hawaii is actually the only US state where standard time is used statewide year-round. While most of Arizona does uses standard time year-round, that’s not true for the entire state. The Navajo reservation uses DST. (The Hopi reservation, which is surrounded by the Navajo reservation, does not.)

I grew up in the coolest Halloween venue EVAH! (Greatest High School Mascot: Sleepy Hollow High School Headless Horseman!)
Now called Sleepy Hollow, it was known as North Tarrytown, New York when I was growing up. Changed name to capitalize on the legend.
I grew up about 3 blocks from where the Headless Horseman Bridge used to be. Spent many a Halloween prowling around it and the Old Dutch Church cemetery.
If my parents had found out about half of the crap I pulled, I would have been summarily executed!

And in a relevant comment to the above open thread article: the name “Haloween” itself is thought to be a contraction/corruption of the original “Hallows’ Eve” or “Hallows Evening”. It was so called because the next day was/is All Saints Day, often referred to as All Hallows Day – which was (and still is) a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation in much of the Catholic world (localities are authorized to request Papal dispensation to move obligation for Holy Days to Sundays).
So the next time some misguided individual tries to tell you that Haloween is a “demonic” holiday, you can now enlighten them regarding the fact that it not only has origins as a religious holiday in its own right (the evening vigil prior to a religious feast day) – but that the name itself refers to an even more important religious holiday.
I wouldn’t say that Halloween is a “demonic” holiday, but it does have something to do with the spirit world commemorated in the Celtic holiday of Samhain.
The veil separating the spirit world from the everyday world was said to be at its thinnest on this day. There is a cave in County Roscommon, Ireland, the Cave of the Cats, where it is said that, on Samhain, the Morrigan, the dark queen, leaves the portal into the Otherworld unguarded, allowing spirits to cross over

If you look over the article, the Samhain traditions pretty closely follow our Halloween ones.
There are some Christian holidays which are now celebrated on what used to be pagan holidays. I would say that All Saints Day was one of them since the Celts celebrated Samhain on 31 October/1 November. I would also say that it was done to convince the hardheaded pagans that the Christian was the real way to think of their pagan holiday.

You might not call Haloween demonic or un-Chrstian, but some with no knowledge of its history do. A cousin of mine does volunteer work at a local school; one of the current students at her school doesn’t participate in anything related to Haloween because his family considers it to be “un-Christian”.
Samhain has the same connection to Haloween as the old Germanic pagan Yultide festival has to Christmas. The Catholic Church early on (e.g., prior to the year 1000) adopted similar dates for both, and some of the outward trappings of both were carried over by local populations. However, what’s being celebrated in both Christian holidays is decidedly different than in either of the temporally coincident former pagan ones.
By the same logic, anyone who considers Haloween “unChristian” should consider Christmas equally so. I’ve run across very few if any who do – though given today’s overt commercialization and secularization of both holidays, they might arguably have somewhat of a point.

Got this from Jack ET2 LPH 3 written by a californian Mayor. My Leftist friends (as well as many ardent #NeverTrumpers) constantly ask me if I’m not bothered by Donald Trump’s lack of decorum. They ask if I don’t think his tweets are “beneath the dignity of the office.” Here’s my answer: We Right-thinking people have tried dignity. There could not have been a man of more quiet dignity than George W. Bush as he suffered the outrageous lies and politically motivated hatreds that undermined his presidency. We tried statesmanship. Could there be another human being on this earth who so desperately prized “collegiality” as John McCain? We tried propriety – has there been a nicer human being ever than Mitt Romney? And the results were always the same. This is because, while we were playing by the rules of dignity, collegiality and propriety, the Left has been, for the past 60 years, engaged in a knife fight where the only rules are those of Saul Alinsky and the Chicago mob. I don’t find anything “dignified,” “collegian” or “proper” about Barack Obama’s lying about what went down on the streets of Ferguson in order to ramp up racial hatreds because racial hatreds serve the Democratic Party. I don’t see anything “dignified” in lying about the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi and imprisoning an innocent filmmaker to cover your tracks. I don’t see anything “statesman-like” in weaponizing the IRS to be used to destroy your political opponents and any dissent. Yes, Obama was “articulate” and “polished” but in no way was he in the least bit “dignified,” “collegian” or “proper.” The Left has been engaged in a war against America since the rise of the Children of the ‘60s. Out effing standing comment! I was fixin’ to say “where da hell is Jeff our punster, what have you done with him?” til I re-read the credits at the top. A Commiefornia mayor wrote that? Homeboy needs to run for the guvanator spot. Many of us have felt the same way as the writer and have fought tooth and nail but were getting overwhelmed. We recognized what the demonrats were doing. If they had of run just about anyone but the Bitch of Benghazi, that murderous trash from hell, they would have taken the WH. As it is daTrumpster has slowed down the destruction of our Republic. Hopefully the dims will continue to self destruct and we can continue to climb out of the morass of Socialism that we were heading to.

WELL SAID Jeff LPH 3, 63-66, and I truly think you’re dead-on!! IMHO the political left has been trying to start another Civil War ever since the late 1960’s. Just take one look at how they’ve tried to divide the American Populace against itself in any way, shape or form they can since then, by race, by culture, by income brackets, etcetera. Now since President Trump got elected, the American Populace has seen a unification that has not happened in at least decades and those in the inner circles of power in DC, aka the Great Whorehouse on the Potomac aka the Deep State are suddenly shitting their pants and pantyhose en masse as they see a threat to their grip on power as never seen before.
