Naval Academy appealing reinstatement of fired professor

Poetrooper sends us a link to some legal dancing currently under-weigh at Canoe U. Seems tenured professor Bruce Fleming was fired for getting too comfy with the students, so of course he sued to be reinstated. This has forced the Navy to bring him back until the counter-suit is settled. The way this reads the Navy was looking for a reason to let him go, and found one. From the article:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The U.S. Naval Academy is appealing a judge’s decision to reinstate a fired English professor who has been a longtime critic of the academy, officials said Wednesday.
Bruce Fleming, a civilian who is a tenured professor, was fired last year after the academy alleged “conduct unbecoming a federal employee” in the classroom.
Andrew Phillips, the academy’s academic dean and provost, wrote to Fleming on Wednesday that he had been reinstated with all pay and benefits he is entitled. Phillips wrote for Fleming to report to the academy on Monday to receive assignments “such as scholarly research and writing and service to the school.”
Phillips wrote his duties will not include teaching or advising students, because the Navy has determined “your presence in the classroom and engaging with midshipmen in any advisory role would be an undue disruption to the academic environment.”
Accusations against him included allowing students to tell jokes of a sexual nature in class, discussing sexual matters in class, emailing a partially clothed photo of himself to his students and touching students on the neck, shoulders and back in class without their consent.
Seems pretty cut and dried; he’s back while the Navy’s appeal goes forward. And no interaction with the students. But these incidents are rarely simple, and generally fall into the “What he said, what she said, and what actually happened” category. Read the rest of the article here: Marine Corps Times

This guy sounds like a real dick. If he dislikes the USNA so much, why does he work there?
I guess being a creepy perv is OK if you’re a tenured professor.
Or, a vice president of the U.S.
The paycheck and benefits most likely. He should be careful not to bite the hand that feeds him.
He should be fired for wearing that seersucker suit with a bowtie.
CCR I second that. Who is this prof channeling? Why the Hell is he at USNA if he is so butthurt about teaching there?
With said, the picture above is pretty much how I envisioned the “Professor Thad” character in James Webb’s “A Sense of Honor”.
Why? Sabotage, probably.
The same reason former LT buttplug was at West Point wearing a Che shirt under his uniform. To disrupt from within.
“… in my experience, as a Communist infiltrator…”
The oft told “new looie” joke still fits
Hold it Comm Center; at one time I owned 3 seersucker suits but no bow ties.
“Accusations against him included allowing students to tell jokes of a sexual nature in class, discussing sexual matters in class,…”
Hoo boy! These middies better stay out of First Division berthing!
Seriously, I’ve met civvies like this who loudly criticize the USN at every turn. The only response to their discontent is “don’t the door hit where the good Lord split ya!”
Cryppie, I find the entirety of that quote far more telling:
“Accusations against him included allowing students to tell jokes of a sexual nature in class, discussing sexual matters in class, emailing a partially clothed photo of himself to his students and touching students on the neck, shoulders and back in class without their consent.”
A prissy, Biden-type toucher in bow ties and pastel seersucker suits who, by the way, just happens to write essays on the topic of gay porn on lefty websites:

Anyone besides a cynical ol’ Poe see a profile emerging there that lends additional concern to that unwanted touching?
With writings like this, “he” (if that’s the preferred pronoun) should be teaching at Berkeley….
Makes one wonder how he got tenure in the first place. I’ll give Annapolis the benefit of the doubt and maybe he waited until after he got it to start acting weird.
‘Pears like the English prof left his participle dangling and stepped on it. Maybe someone can give him a diagram of how to avoid a sentence.
I’m a big fan of dissent, as any system of Man is worthy of critique. But ultimately you have to respect the institution(s) you examine, especially if it serves a higher purpose, as long as the result is net positive, act utilitarianism if you will.
It sounds like the Professor is just a prick that thinks with the same.
Maybe he’s a Knights fan… (then the man has good tastes!)
Not a West Pointer, but we don’t want him either!
R-D, I think he may be looking for a man that tastes good.
Sorry Charlie.
You guys acts as if the academy will fall apart if this man was an instructor. I want the Navy to stand strong. I want you to deny any request to hide the name of a warship because the CIC would be angry.
It’s an awesome post in support of all the online people; they will take benefit from it I am sure.
