Another Two Return

| June 23, 2019

DPAA has identified and accounted for the following formerly-missing US personnel.

From World War II

None

S2c Moyses A. Martinez, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the USS Colorado, was lost in the Tinian Islands on 24 July 1944. He was accounted for on 14 June 2019.

PVT Jacob W. Givens, US Army, assigned to K Company, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, was lost in Germany on 20 October 1944. He was accounted for on 19 June 2019.

From Korea

None

From Southeast Asia

None

Welcome back, elder brothers-in-arms. Our apologies that your return took so long.

Rest easy. You’re home now.

. . .

Over 72,000 US personnel remain unaccounted for from World War II; over 7,600 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War; over 1,500 remain unaccounted for in Southeast Asia (SEA); 126 remain unaccounted for from the Cold War; 5 remain unaccounted for from the Gulf Wars; and 1 individual remains unaccounted for from Operation Eldorado Canyon. Comparison of DNA from recovered remains against DNA from some (but not all) blood relatives can assist in making a positive ID for unidentified remains that have already been recovered, or which may be recovered in the future.

On their web site’s Contact Us page DPAA now has FAQs. One of those FAQs describes who can and cannot submit DNA samples useful in identifying recovered remains. The chart giving the answer can be viewed here. The text associated with the chart is short and is found in one of the FAQs.

If your family lost someone in one of these conflicts and you qualify to submit a DNA sample, please arrange to submit one. By doing that you just might help identify the remains of a US service member who’s been repatriated but not yet been identified – as well as a relative of yours, however distant. Or you may help to identify remains to be recovered in the future.

Everybody deserves a proper burial. That’s especially true for those who gave their all while serving this nation.

Welcome Home Warriors. Some grateful citizens of this Country Salute your Service and pay Honors to your Sacrifice.

Thanks Hondo. My favorite thread on the TAH Site. Be a day of celebration when they are all accounted for.

Wonder if it would be possible for one of our research ninjas to do some digging on the loss of the USS Little 5 Sep ’42 Solomon Islands/Guadalcanal? The brother and uncle to some good friends of mine was F1 James W. Bowen, MIA declared KIA 6 Sep 43. He is remembered on a marker in Manila. Not sure if the VA would provide a marker stone to go in the Family Plot.

A quick search gives us this site:

USS Little (DD-79) was a Wickes class destroyer that served as a fast troop transport during WWII. She was sunk by Japanese destroyers as you post, 5 SEP 42. Crew was 100, and I can find no mention of survivors. I would assume Fireman 1st Class James W. Bowen rests with his shipmates in or near USS Little.

Fair winds and following seas.

Thanks ‘Ed. You da man. I hit a quick look at Wiki that only gave a bit more than I posted. A side track took me away for awhile. Knew you would/could come thru for me. I’ll forward this linky to F1C Bowen’s nephew. He will appreciate it. He does have a picture of his uncle in uniform, but very little other info. No other close surviving members of the family.

Rest in peace. May the road rise to meet them and the wind be always at their backs.

Thanks, Hondo.

Welcome home.

To those who have not served, we are are an anomaly, things that can not be understood.

There is a graveside service at the DFW National Cemetery this Friday, June 28. I will be there.

Peace to all.

There but for the grace of God
go I.

Welcome home, men.
