I know that everyone, including AW1Ed, has stories about people doing something abundantly stupid and somehow not being turned into a sandwich by the Fates, but this was really pushing the boundaries.
Maybe someone can explain the urge to go over the guard rail at an active volcano or the Grand Canyon to “get a better look”, without realizing there are serious consequences, e.g., going over the guard rail at a zoo to get closer to the tiger or polar bears for a selfie and then getting mauled. One of these days, the dominant male gorilla behind the “unbreakable” glass is going to break it while the 4-year-olds are teasing him.

That’s what I was thinking. I’d expect this of a 19 year old, but this guy is coming in to middle age.
I hope this maroon is not an NCO in a supervisory capacity. Maybe he joined the Army later in life after his failure to launch in the civilian world. He should be billed for the rescue operation costs and all junior enlisted should be cautioned to “don’t be that guy.”

Just a personal pet peeve, but “maroon” should never be used as a stand-in for moron… It holds racial connotations, and I have nothing but respect for those who are willing to rebel against their own enslavement.
What drives me crazy about the brainless wonders who do this dumb crap is that they endanger others. Because Mr. Excrement-for-brains fell into the volcano, rescuers had to go in after him. And rescuers always go in, no matter how risky. “Sorry dude, it’s too hot in there. We’ll hold a memorial service while you slowly cook.” said no one in recent memory.

Dumbassery in the wilderness is nothing unusual. I’ve worked for several DoI agencies, and have way too many stories about personnel saving oxygen thieving visitors. I’m amazed the death and mishap rate is as low as it is.
You really want to see stupid go to Yellowstone Park. Everything thing from trying to pet a buffalo (bison) and other wildlife. To getting off the wooden walkways to take pictures of geysers hot springs and boiling mud pots. Then they get attacked or fall in then they sue the park service because of their own stupidity.
I was there the dumbass tried to get a good buffalo picture but the buff wouldn’t raise it’s head so he walked over and kicked it in the nose. It went downhill from there. Same trip I saw another genius walk up on a nice bull elk. Got about 50ft from it before the Rangers showed up and called to him from their trucks to get the hell over here then promptly escorted him from the park.
