Utah woman who shot and killed her boyfriend spared jail time
By Annie Knox
SALT LAKE CITY — A medical assistant originally charged with murdering her boyfriend has been spared time behind bars after admitting she killed him in self-defense.
Stephanie Dawn Payan, 43, “is a survivor. She is not a criminal,” her attorneys argued in court documents. They contend she is a caring mother who fired one shot out of fear in August 2017, killing Guy Wells Mecham after he repeatedly threatened violence and shoved her.
Prosecutors accused Payan of shooting Mecham in the back, in part out of anger, as he left his Duchesne house, but her attorneys said it’s not clear he was leaving. He might have tried to retrieve a gun from his truck and hurt her or her teenage daughter, they argued.
“She reacted by using a gun that she had bought and kept for just such a moment: defense,” her attorney Scott Williams wrote in court filings ahead of the Monday sentencing hearing.

Police identify man fatally shot after he reportedly attacked a woman
Tulsa police on Wednesday identified a man who was fatally shot by a woman in an apparent act of self-defense about a week ago.
Ronald Tyrone Davis, 47, died at a hospital April 2 after a woman shot him when he reportedly attacked her near Peoria Mart, 6336 S. Peoria Ave., Homicide Unit Sgt. Brandon Watkins said.
The store’s surveillance video showed the woman and a friend walking from the store to an apartment complex nearby when Davis jumped on her back, police said.
After a struggle, she pulled her gun from her purse and shot him twice in the upper torso, police said.

Police investigating shootings in Salt Lake City, West Jordan
SALT LAKE CITY — A man shot outside a Salt Lake house Wednesday remained hospitalized Thursday and was being guarded by police.
The incident is one of two shootings that occurred in Salt Lake County Wednesday night. The second was reported in West Jordan.
Just after 10 p.m., a woman in the 100 West block of Paxton Avenue (1180 South) heard her dog barking and went outside to investigate. She was confronted by at least two men and an altercation ensued, according to Salt Lake police.
During the confrontation, one of the men in the yard pulled out a handgun. That’s when a man inside the house came outside with his own handgun and shot one of the men in the yard, police said.

Well well, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes, looks like Lady’s Night here at TAH with two DOT, and one each inconvenienced or in the wind. A member of the Fairer Sex was positively involved in each one.

You go girls. “…using a gun she had bought and kept for just such a moment: defense.” “…and shot him twice in the upper torso.” Now that’s what I call gun control. Not so sure about Ms Thang’s posture in the pic. Never seen a grip by the magazine stance. Other than that, she seems to be a cutie.
Put down the snow shovel Outcast and stoke up the fire, I got the winnings in the wagon.
“Not so sure about Ms Thang’s posture in the pic”
Yeah, the “dainty” trigger squeeze and zero butt pocket stands out to me. Put a Garand in her hand…,
truth is, where you place your hands and the location of the butt mean nothing in the end.
It is where your cheek meets the stock that matters…good sight alignment can often beat good mechanics. Although I would hope someone willing to spend enough to fire 5.56 on their own dime might desire both…
Maybe she wanted to look cheeky in the pic, Butt I could be wrong. If she wanted to support the mag, she could have held the weapon like a British Sten with the mag resting on the inside of her fore arm but I think that would be a little and I mean little awkward.
She may have better grip control by using that method than she would if she gripped the gun barrel. Barrels, unless they are oaken and full of bourbon, scotch or moonshine, can get hot, you know.
I know Ex. Doing live fire and manuever down in Fort Dix when I was in the guard. Got up from the ground and grabbed the barrel.OUCH. Had to stop due to small brush fires popping up and did the surround and drown drill with our canteens.
Yeah. The SLC area has has a rash of bad guys and shootings lately. Not a good thing.
The one that made the Big News locally was the dude who drove down the street in a (stolen?) pickup, randomly shooting at people, was chased and shot by a coven of cops, and ended up crashing said pickup into a building on State Street. Suicide by cop.
2/1/1. Salt lake, before she moved to be with him, he pushed her into a counter and broke 4 ribs and she moved in with him anyway then later fills his appointment with the reaper, uh, ok I pass on this one. No comment. Tulsa, attacked her by jumping on her back and she still manages to help him meet the reaper. Good job, only 15 in Tulsa so far this year, what? Didn’t know there was some kind of contest. Salt Lake again, kind of vague on details on this one as did not know there was a part of the body known as the Yard unless this was one of those wide body types. oh well, NEXT. Definitely fairer sex if you can walk away uninjured but if you are stupid it is becoming more apparent you won’t. Speaking of which, was a very crude and debasing comment made by Lars to Ex-PH2 yesterday. Snow is shoveled, 5 inches at sunrise and a lot melted by sunset. Never trade the place here for anything, fire is lit and now comfy here, wonder if higher ups need me to go in secret cave here to find soft digging spot for some remains to be put into, just a hint from here fellas.
The SLC man who was shot and killed by his girlfriend had been convicted of abusing two other women he lived with. Yet, the girlfriend/shooter willingly took her then 14 year old daughter and they moved into the convicted abuser’s home. Ladies, please don’t put your and your children’s lives at risk by shacking-up with a known domestic violence perpetrator. Your “love” will never change a serial abuser’s behavior. A bullet or two might end the DV offender’s life, but your and your children’s misery from abuse will endure for decades after his banishment to Hell. Be smart, Be safe.
Now you know lonely desperate women are going to ignore what you said, don’tcha?
Someone must have brought up that SLC dude’s past. Without it “I shot him in the back because I was afraid he might maybe come back” would never fly.
Yeah, well, in his case….
Walking away and shot in the back after the fact?? Hmmmmmmm
Seems to be one little factoid missing here, it was mentioned here somewhere that she feared he was going out to his vehicle to get a gun and return, don’t see anything as to truck being searched for a weapon.
And cops and the courts would never have stood up for her after she (and possibly daughter) were killed.
Memo to women who still haven’t figured it out: a piece of paper will not keep you from harm from someone intent upon causing said harm, no matter how vigorously waved. Be able and willing to back up said paper with 124 grains of copper-jacketed lead applied at 1250 fps if needed.
