Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Says That Capitalism is Irredeemable

| March 10, 2019

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by Photographer Callaghan O’Hare/Bloomberg

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was at an event, in Austin Texas, along with Democratic presidential hopefuls. She took the opportunity to slam capitalism, and the inequality that it created.

From Bloomberg:

“Capitalism is an ideology of capital – the most important thing is the concentration of capital and to seek and maximize profit,” Ocasio-Cortez said. And that comes at any cost to people and to the environment, she said, “so to me capitalism is irredeemable.”

She majored in international relations and economics. This should’ve included both micro and macro economics.

You’re going to have supply and demand for products and services. Then, you’re going to have those who are going to meet demand via leveraging the resources available to meet that demand.

There are other factors at play as well. When buyers (demand) pay to get something material or non material that they need or want, and the supplier charges what the market could handle to meet this demand, money is going to funnel to the supplier.

Depending on the profit potential, then the actual profit, the supplier is going to charge a rate that would allow them to cover costs, and then make a profit. Repeat cycle.

This happens across multiple services and industries. In order to meet demand, those producing products and services hire other people to create those products and deliver services.

These individuals aren’t going to make as much as the owner of the company. However, they have the option to increase their worth through experience and education to ask for a pay raise, or to be able to compete for a better paying job.

There are other factors at play that’s not mentioned in this post. However, this isn’t the zero sum game that Alexandria Cortez makes it out to be. Capitalism beats socialism and communism when it comes to reducing poverty and poorness in favor of increasing a person’s net worth.

More from the same article:

“It doesn’t feel good to live in an unequal society,” she said, citing an increase in homelessness in New York City among veterans and the elderly while penthouses sit empty. “It doesn’t feel good to live in a society like that.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is arguing for an “equal opportunity to an equal outcome” arrangement. This also hints at the philosophy, paraphrased, that advocates “from each according to ability, to each according to need.”

With all other things equal, people pretty much have equal opportunity from the beginning. Then from this “starting point”, people make decisions, good, neutral or bad, that leads to specific outcomes. These decisions and outcomes compound, impacting each person’s life.

Naturally, the outcomes for each person is going to be different.

It wouldn’t be surprising if local and state policies contributed to the increase in veteran and elderly homelessness in New York City. Other factors, like the series of decisions made by the homeless, contributed to their being homeless.

More can be read at Bloomberg.

Thanks for the link MCPO NYC. Great 23 minutes (I usually don’t watch videos that long. Been my experience that those folks who have a YouTube video longer that about 10 minutes are those that rant on and on with no substance (they like to hear themselves talk). That young man is a no BS guy.

He should be on Fox News.

^this^^word^&^ditto^ Outstanding Master Chief. Should be required viewing for all true American Patriots. “Nefarious and creepy.” Damn Skippy! When Also Old Cotex FIRST showed up, we all seemed curious as to where she came from and who was her sponsor. Well, now we know.

These people represent a clear and present danger to our Republic. Maybe we should start selling off popcorn futures and invest in more ammo and rations. The free sh*t army and sheeple in these districts will not pay attention until it is too late. 79 primaried, 24 wins, and 7 elected. That is not a bad start. They have now smelled the smoke, and know what works and what doesn’t work. If they are not exposed and stopped, it will not bode well. Remember what K told J on MIB. Individuals can be smart…People are stupid.

I wouldn’t listen to anything this brainless scrunt said for two minutes, let alone 23 minutes. I am convinced she is a shill or puppet for Soros and his ilk. Tell me how an effing barista gets elected to Congress without someone pulling the strings and putting up the Benjamins?

Except for those at the very top of the socialist pyramid.

They become billionaires.

For that you need to be a thug with brains, like the two worst dictators of the 20th century, Stalin and Hitler. You also need to be a charismatic leader, as both of them were.

She is neither a thug nor a genius, however looks can serve in place of charisma, until they find someone who is a charismatic leader.

Somehow, those in power always get that extra little perk… or two… or three.

So capitalism is irredeemable because some people don’t get to be billionaires?

Well, I’m thinking socialiasm/communism/marxism/etc. is irredeemable due to the fact that it’s killed over 100 million people and counting. Thanks for playing, you idiotic bitch!

If anyone wants to see Socialism in action, they can visit any jail in the world. There they will see people who all have work, who get free medical, dental, and optical care, and who have free accommodation, free food, and even a wage, albeit a pittance.

Some are there for life, although not because they like the place so much but because that’s the sentence the judge handed down.

Under these Utopian conditions one would wonder why they’d build such a high wall around the joint. The wall wasn’t built to stop people getting in, it was built to stop them getting out.

Some of you may remember James Watt, Secretary of the Interior under Reagan. Probably the worst cabinet member in the history of the US. But, this quote, that pretty much sealed his doom in the Reagan cabinet, was spot on:

“If you want an example of the failure of socialism, don’t go to Russia, come to America and go to the Indian reservations.”

Poetrooper

And he was spot on. I have lived around Indian reservations much of my life and in my work I called on Indian Health Service facilities on reservations from North Carolina to Alaska. The poverty and misery was almost universal. The Cherokees in North Carolina, one of the “Civilized Tribes,” was probably the best off while the abject worst I saw was in the Dakotas. Tribal socialism had removed any incentive and while the advent of tribal-owned casinos has improved their daily living standards, they still have little motivation to improve themselves.

The illegal immigration of America is coming through Texas and we are swamped here. They damn near took the Senate seat away from Ted Cruz, although if he would be a bit more energetic and actually do something it would have been a lot bigger win for him.
Paul Ryan was the biggest smarmiest slimebag of a Speaker and was worse than the crybaby bohner could ever be.

It pains me to think it, but Mr Deutsch is right. The Dims should be afraid though, there is a growing segment of the population that finds the Lefties’ proposals palatable.
The main issue I see is a 100% lack of leadership and a schism vis-à-vis what the platform should be. If someone does not take control of that thing, right the ship and get it back on a course of favoring free markets….well, they, and we are f**ked. Proper f**ked.
I’m just glad to be heavily vested in a plan B when the domestic soviet revolution starts. The cure will be delivered at 3,000 feet a second.
I have hope thought, there really isn’t another option. Socialism is a deadwish that takes generations to kill its host. We need a strong multiple-party system so dialogue can make us stronger but how can you argue against a party that wants to suicide?

Ex-PH2

You make some good points, Roh-Dog, but if you substitute “socialist” for “soviet”, you’ll be more clear.

Maybe we should be looking at all the opposing parties that have been around since the Whigs and the Corn Riots, or even earlier than that.

Let’s hope (sincerely) that Ms. AOC continues to grab the center spotlight and say things that make people respond with “Uh, what???” It may be that the regular Demos are just getting out of her way, so that none of that will splash on them.

I think you guys are missing one key point in the Demwits master plan. No one will really say it cause its RACIS… step 1. Completely change course and say all immigration is good, legal or illegal. Step 2. Flood the major cities with undocumented workers thereby driving down wages and driving up citizen unemployment. This action has the added benefit of also driving up crime and poverty and taxes on the rich to “combat” these issues. Step 3. Begin a mass exodus of the rich fleeing squalor and taxes into middle America where they will take their ultra liberal values with them blissfully unaware that it was their values in the first place that caused the squalor. This also has the benefit of changing the voting demographic of those blue collar States mostly Republican voters and turning those States purple. Step 4. While attempting to cause this Mass Exodus at the same time attack racist policies imperialism and colonialism and try to push through laws that give the vote to all people in the country to include illegal or undocumented people. That is why we are seeing such a mass Exodus to our Southern border at this point people are thinking if they get in before the amnesty is declared they get to stay here . Step 4. Control the mainstream media and information stream that the mass American public is allowed to see without having to do research on their own we’ve already seen this remember when it was taboo to show two people laying in bed together on TV well movies, television tend to change what we deem is acceptable behaviors on a societal level. On a personal level I’m not saying a strong female lead or the occasional gay couple on TV is a bad thing but every TV show or movie these days has to have at least someone gay or female kicking 20 guys butts all at once. Over the course of several decades adding some diplomatic and economic issues as well and Wallah complete societal change of the American Republic with the overall… Read more »

AOC’s Mother Moved to Florida to Avoid NY’s High Taxes

‘God played quite a joke on me with this politics stuff!’ The privacy-loving mother of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez whips up lasagna as she tells how she had to flee New York because of high taxes and gushes about wedding bells for her daughter

◾U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s mother Blanca Ocasio-Cortez has spoken exclusively to DailyMail.com about her Democrat star daughter
◾Blanca Ocasio-Cortez – BOC – is still settling down in Eustis, Florida, a small city in the far suburbs of Orlando with her mother Clotilde, 78, and a rescue dog
◾She said: ‘After my husband died the family went through tough times. I was cleaning houses in the morning and working as a secretary in the afternoon’
◾‘We moved from The Bronx to Yorktown Heights, but it was difficult making ends meet. I was skipping mortgage payments and we almost lost the house twice’
◾Early on, AOC didn’t show signs she’d get into politics – except that she talked incessantly and itched to show off her brains, her mother said
◾‘She wasn’t raised to be a socialist,’ Mrs. Ocasio-Cortez said. ‘That’s not how Puerto Ricans are. She’s a democratic socialist, and it’s very different’
◾Blanca was particularly put off by the controversy surrounding AOC’s move into D.C. high-rise, saying ‘that building isn’t even that expensive by D.C. and New York standards’
◾The mother-of-two said her new Trump-supporting Florida neighbors don’t know she is AOC’s mother, saying she doesn’t like the limelight for her family

MY ASS, regular Socialism is typically forced upon a populace at gunpoint while it’s foisted upon a population under a smokescreen of unicorns, rainbows and fairy dust with the label of “Democratic Socialism” and IMHO both are just relabeled communism.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Here’s the thing, as an avowed capitalist for most of my adult life some of what she says isn’t wrong, it’s the solutions that might be suspect. Unrestricted capitalism as tried in the late 1800s and early 1900s in this nation was clearly not all that great for the vast majority of American workers. There’s a reason there so many violent strikes and attempts by capitalists to crush those strikes with violent beatings and murders. That said the failure of the collectivist solutions Ms. Cortez believes will help are largely due to the failure to recognize why capitalism is so often far more successful economically than most other isms. Greed, pure and simple. The desire by each of us to obtain more, we’re wiling to work for that more but we want it. The isms Cortez promotes remove the payoffs for that willingness to work and that leads to their failure. Capitalism can support a fair amount of dissent in the ranks, it can support social safety concepts. Communism, socialism, fascism, and any ism that places the government in control of production will inevitably lead to a loss of production because the government removes individual rewards for effort. It was always interesting to me that the master of economic theory Karl Marx was a lazy fuck who never held a real job in his entire life, but he’s somehow supposed to this astute observer of all the wrongs of capitalist society. No one ever considers that Marx’s perspective was limited both to his own lack of ambition and the uniquely European variant of capitalism that allowed previously moneyed classes of nobility to inherits sums of wealth without producing and consequently their views on a capitalist society might be skewed. This is a conversation for a far longer response than there’s room for here. Suffice to say that Cortez isn’t wrong that unrestricted capitalism has a huge negative side, but capitalism yoked to a reasonable series of social responsibilities will provide far more success than any other ism I’ve encountered in my many, many decades on this earth. Where Cortez is… Read more »

And as I recall across Europe, business taxes are lower than personal income taxes.

I also tried to explain that to a couple of people I know. Like, hey dude, social programs are fine, but there needs to be a balance with those “ism’s”. You can’t have full capitalism, but you can’t go full socialism either. Doesn’t matter if you call it democratic or not.

We have an immense amount of social programs. We give huge tax breaks to people and businesses that give to charities (charity is a trillion dollar business in this country). We have social programs to help people in need. At the same time, we have super rich people. But how many of them are providing jobs, benefits, etc., to people so those people don’t need to use assistance programs?

What we have trouble with is people who get elected and try to change everyone’s world to garner votes for themselves to make it seem like they’re of the people. (I bet that video chat was the first time Faucahontas Warren had a beer since college.)

Veritas Omnia Vincit

There’s an entire evening’s discussion with beer and wings around the ideas behind what you write.

I believe there’s a case to be made with the words of the founders against massive accumulation of wealth from those who don’t actually work the money.

Meaning they saw a huge difference between someone who created jobs and made a wealthy living working their farm/business/profession and someone who inherited all of that without ever doing anything.

The founders did not like the accumulation of massive wealth by a few individuals, largely based on their experiences with nobility.

Jefferson writes a great deal about that in his letters to others. He explained in detail the difference in keeping what you produce versus getting a bunch of wealth you did nothing to earn besides being born.

Some of those with massive wealth create zero jobs with that wealth. They simply acquire more property and gamble on the beliefs of the stock exchance.

When Boeing can lose 23 billion in worth in a day, it’s clear the value is backed by nothing but feelings about future earnings.

That makes for some entertaining conversations with people who don’t necessarily understand how massive wealth manipulates the system. When 0.05% of the population gets all the legislation they want and 99.95 percent of the population gets maybe 30% of the legislation they’re looking for, it creates excellent material for a conversation. Especially with those who are convinced the system is good for them in spite of the evidence to the contrary. That’s some awesome fucking propaganda to me.

timactual

I believe a case can be made that Jesus Christ frowned on massive accumulations of wealth, also. So what?

Freedom consists of allowing people to do things that you don’t approve of, as long as they don’t infringe on the rights of others. I think both the founders and JC would agree on that, which is why accumulating wealth is not forbidden by either.

“Some of those with massive wealth create zero jobs with that wealth.”

What do you think they do with all that money, keep it in a vault and wallow in it like Scrooge McDuck?

Just a reminder–envy is one of the seven deadly sins, and the arguments of those who condemn the accumulation of wealth because it’s just not nice reek of envy.

Slow Joe

VoV, I didn’t read your post completely. Too long. I stoped after paragraph 3, which is a record for me.

Anyway, I have to address your point that made me back up my lunch.

“Unrestricted capitalism” is not a real thing. It is an strawman used by communists and fellow travelers to undermine the free market system.

Imagine an slide with the left end in command economy, meaning an economy commanded and controlled by the state. Then at the end of the right end there is free market, as in an economy free of governement intervention.

Every nation in the world is somewhere between those two extremes, because even the old Soviet Union there was a black market runing on scarcity of supply, while even in Hong Kong 1990s there were government regulations in place to protect consumers.

So 1800s American capitalism was not as close to free market as you seem to assume, because a few companies were capable of controlling huge market shares and become monopolies, destroying their competition using unfair trade practices that are the opposite of free market.

Ideally, the gruberment is just an arbiter and keep the playing field free of market distortions provoked by either the big players or the gruberment itself.

So a truly free market is based on the rule of law and the impartiality of governement regulations. If there are ways for a company to exploit government regulations to reduce their competition, that company is obligated to do that, because busineses are there to create profits, and government to enforce the laws and make it more costly for a company to violate the law than to complait. Natural selection is always at play, and the business world is not exception.

Finally, do not confuse free market with free trade. Free market is internal to a society or nation, and free trade is external.

Globalists and collectivists love free trade and hate free market.

Too long/Didn’t read version:

VoV is always wrong.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

At least you make me smile with every response Joe.

Compared to today unrestricted is relatively accurate. No minimum wage, no maximum work day or work week regarding hours worked. No vacation time, no sick time, no time off at all except at the discretion of your employer. There was no OSHA, no EPA, and nothing to stop an employer from losing workers to shitty, unsafe work sites on a regular basis. The list of things required by government in those days could be counted on the fingers of one hand after a chainsaw accident without much worry.

So sure you got me, there were one or two work rules mostly related to taxation…clearly a strawman argument invalidating every word of the reply.

Nothing in your reply speaks to any of the content I wrote, probably because as you say you didn’t actually read anything I wrote.

And thanks for the heads up on the free trade versus free market, I was completely baffled.

Enjoy your day dickweed.

11B-Mailclerk

Joe,

Monopolies require government enforcement, thus are not “free market”.

Without the force of government, anyone can jump in and undercut the monopoly. And they will if the monopoly tries to overcharge. Unless of course someone else stops them.

So if you see a monopoly, you are certain to find someone running official cover for it, someone .gov.

Oops.

A Proud Infidel®™

HEY Slow Joe, lemme say it this way, you’re totally full of shit. You’re obviously a millennial because you don’t remember the days of telephone and Cable TV monopoly. When I grew up, there was only ONE local telephone company in town, ditto with Cable TV and if you didn’t like what they had to offer, well TOUGH SHIT, you went without (NO Cell phones or internet in those days either). Long Distance Telephone? Well there was AT&T or “Ma Bell”, once again it was TOUGH SHIT if you didn’t like what they offered. I’m sure many another TAH Regular®™ here remembers the same, it was during the Reagan Years that “Ma Bell’s monopoly was done away with the snotnosed liberal media screaming about what a mess it was going to make and Cable TV monopolies soon went away as well.
OH, you don’t like seeing others accumulate wealth? Just what happens when a multimillionaire or billionaire wants to buy a big new yacht? It takes a lot of Skilled Tradesmen to build it for starters, as well as the people who manufacture the components of it, and each of them pay their taxes as well. I could go on, but right now you really bore the shit out of me.

rgr769

I agree Slow Joe. Capitalism is not really an “ism” like Communism or Socialism, ideologies that are pseudo-religions, as their followers are fervent believers just like the Jihadies. Capitalism was given its current definition and bad rep by Marx and the enemies of free enterprise on the left. True free enterprise as explained by Adam Smith in “The Wealth of Nations” is characterized by fair, level playing field competition among competing businesses. Monopolies are a means to avoid that competition and fix prices for maximum profit. Socialists aka crypto-communists just want the state to be the sole monopoly and operator of every major enterprise. A prime example is healthcare; as what better way to control people than control their access to medical care? Their various claims that the Scandinavian countries are socialist paradises is bunk. They all have free enterprise privately owned businesses and industries. Their extensive cradle to grave welfare systems are now financially failing because there are not enough earners to support them, as they continue to import and acquire more takers.

What the globalists like to do is take advantage of the differing tax and regulatory systems and labor rates from around the world and figure out how to make their products and services the cheapest to produce while extracting the highest profits and market share worldwide. They have no loyalty to any nation or its people. Their idea of free trade is freedom to run their competitors out of business so they can dominate their particular markets. They are always willing to work with oppressive regimes, like China or Iran. Google and Facebook are two prime examples.

It’s obvious that AOC went well past full rutabaga and she’s going all out to go even further.

AS TO what she says, I’m still waiting to see the masses from the past that were lifted out of poverty by socialism.

Now … take 23 minutes and listen to this:

I watched it, and it confirmed my suspicions that she is a shill fronted by some Soros operation. Thanks for the link. Now we know it is irrefutable that a bunch of well-funded crypto-commies are behind her as part of a much larger seditious conspiracy. She clearly is one of the proggy left’s seven Manchurian candidates.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

I heard a new nickname for her today…Chiquita Kruschev…

Stupid, but it made me laugh…

Poetrooper

It’s actually quite witty.

Now picture her pounding the spike heel of one of her CFM’s on a table during a diatribe…

Not bad at all, that takes less time to say than “The Bucktoothed Bug-eyed Brainless Bimbo from Westchester”!

Ex-PH2

The information her “advisers” are feeding her is statistically incorrect.
Investopedia’s charts show not only rising wages at the bottom as well as all other levels, but the dollar amounts are based on Social Security tax info, not whiny barista reports.

This chart goes to 2017.

https://www.epi.org/blog/top-1-0-percent-reaches-highest-wages-ever-up-157-percent-since-1979/

The best way to fight false info is with correct data.

That plan assumes a rational opponent.

No true-believer socialist is fully rational. If they were, they would quickly see the inherent flaws, and murderous track record. But they instead believe they are somehow the ones who have finally figured out how to make it work this time, by disbelieving reality harder than ever before.

And they blame the victims for the failures, just like always, which is why Socialism is eventually mass murderous, always.

It. Doesn’t. Work.

rgr769

And it never has worked because it refuses to recognize that humans are motivated best by their own self-interest, not by some cocked-up faux utopian dream. People are basically lazy. If you give them every thing they want or even just satisfy their basic needs without work, most will be happy to sit on the couch and watch TV, not write a great novel or paint a masterpiece.

Ex-PH2

Nor does it recognize that in that “statistic” she was fed about 40% of the population earning less than $20K/year, the people in that population group are probably working ONLY part-time, and are likely undergrad/graduate students, or possibly retirees who need a little extra income to boost/stretch retirement cash.

Those statistics she’s being fed are a complete falsehood. It would be quite worthwhile to call her out on it, make her verify her source and back up what she says with real-world data instead of just parroting what her handlers tell her.

“40% of the population earning less than $20K/year”

If 40% were on Welfare then yeah, I can see that but I don’t think the word “earning” means what she thinks it means.
And how would she improve on that? By adding more and more to the Welfare rolls until 99% earn less than $20K.

Breaking News:

AOC splains herself in great detail.

Short video … must see.

Excellent example of how this stupid scrunt is completely clueless. This just shows how lost she is without her scripted talking points.

Just saw this. How I wish this were true….

Wouldn’t it be great if someone did ask her in a public forem if she is willing to do that…😉
