Airborne Museum’s Statue Vandalized

| February 21, 2019

A screen capture of Major General William C. Lee Museum’s Facebook post related to the vandalism. (Charlotte Observer photo).

William C. Lee Airborne Museum officials suspect that people burned their statue under the assumption that it was a statue of General Robert E. Lee.

The museum’s suspicions are reasonable, given what TAH regulars already suspect.

Many on the left don’t know what they’re protesting. In this scenario, a person, or a group of people, with “Civil War Statue Bad” running through their heads, saw the name “Lee” on a military statue. “Civil War Statue Bad” became “Monument must be destroyed”.

Result? A statue, representing a man with the last name “Lee,” suffers vandalism.

One doesn’t even have to be in the military to know that there’s a difference, a big difference. We’ve seen portraits of General Robert E. Lee in high school history books. A quick glance would’ve shown a difference with the uniform worn.

This specific statue is wearing a uniform worn in the 20th Century. It doesn’t look like it’s sporting a beard either.

Perhaps a trend of the statues that were toppled in the past could’ve given the perpetrators a hint to leave this statue alone. Those toppled statues shared certain features.  This isn’t advocating for the toppling or vandalizing of statues that belong to others.

Monuments like these, related to significant events and accomplishments, should be preserved as an additional way of saying, “These people were real, the people that built this had a reason for standing it up, a reason related to the events of his or her time, etc.”

It puts a face, a human story, to our history. Good, bad, and ugly.

Ironically, the folks that did this ended up making another kind of statement. The left side of the statue got burned, and was damaged. Just like how the radical left in this country is “damaged”, damaged enough to convert their misguided philosophy into misguided actions. See the “El Dorado” type investigations taking place in D.C.

From the Charlotte Observer:

Major General William C Lee Airborne Museum

Thursday evening about 2200 hours someone poured a flammable liquid over the white marble statue of Lee and set it on fire. The local fire department put out the flames but the damage is done. It scorched the statue mostly on the left side. You can see the burn marks in the marble where the jerk placed the remainder of the fuel container on the platform. The cleaning and repair possibilities process will begin soon. Local security cameras will be reviewed.

Thanks to AnotherPat for posting about this on the Midweek Open Thread. You can read more on the Charlotte Observer and Newsweek.

I FIRST commented on this when AnotherPat posted it on the MOT. I’m still pissed.

Again, only a matter of when, not if, these idiots pick on a War Memorial that has a guard on it.

As a matter of Historical Fact/Record, most of your Southern War Memorials were funded by the Ladies Aid Societies that raised money from small donations, literally pennies at a time, bake sales and such. Many of them still belong to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Silent Sam, the Monument destroyed on the UNC Campus, was specifically dedicated to and paid for by students and Alumni of that school. The Tarheels from that State are spinning most rapidly in their graves.

Yeah the airborne operations during the Civil War are legendary.

26Limabeans

Signal Corps was there. I hope they leave General Warren’s statue alone.

SFC D

The Signal Corps is always there. First to go, last to know.

5th/77th FA

Army Aviation and Airborne both can semi trace their true FIRST beginnings to the Signal Corps. Think professor Thadeaus Lowe and his balloon Corps and The Army of the Potomac. His telegraphers went up with a key set and a spool of wire to report not only on the movements them thar damned insurrectionist rebels, but also to direct the Artillery All The Way fire upon Johnny’s guns. The very FIRST use of modern ‘lectric signal was when a young Lt of Artillery, Thomas Jonathan (Old Blue Fire) Jackson, snagged a key operator during the Mexican War and made him signal back to the guns over the hill. One of his promotions and his FIRST notice by Bob Lee and Winfield Scott came about because of this.

Gen GK Warren was a fine officer, whose excellent service at Gettysburg helped Meade win that fight; His reputation was severely and unfairly besmirched and trashed by “Little Phil” Sheridan during the Appromatox Campaign.

I’ll send some coinage in Jonn’s name for this restoration.

ps. We all know that none of these attacks on War Memorials are racial in nature (/s/), but can you imagine the hue and cry if paint or other damage was done to an MLK Statue?

A Proud Infidel®™

You mean like the MLK Statue in DC which was made in China?

jonp

lol. 50th Sig (ABN) When The USA went, so did we. Airborne!

SFC D

The Confederacy didn’t have an air force until 1961.

5th/77th FA

And now the PC crowd has forced it to change the name to the Commemorative Air Force.

OWB

All because they didn’t understand the meaning of the word confederate.

John Robert Wright

There were balloon ops

If that was relevant here it might as well be the Mongolfier Brothers museum then, eh?

Ex-PH2

What else do you expect from people under the age of 60 whose brains are soaked in stupidity, supplemented by ignorance?

I know a bunch of people whose last names are Lee, and they are of several ethnicities.

This is just pure, imbecilic ignorance at work, nothing else. I hope the jerks get caught and have to work it off. Jail time is insufficient punishment, in my view.

Hi I am 53 and a 5x combat veteran-You mean under the age of 35 mostly. I also voted Ronald Reagan in 1984 and served 23 years Active,Guard, and Reserves of Different Branches.

Thank you, thebesig, for these comments. You nailed it.

Thank you for posting this story. This could possibly fall into the “hate” crime category…as well as “stupid”.

Gonna be interesting to see who did this. Some folks love to stir up trouble..

Could this also be viewed as arson?

AIRBORNE!

Ex-PH2

Yes, it is arson in the most common sense. Just because the monument didn’t completely burn, does not mean it was anything but arson.

2/17 Air Cav

No, it’s not arson, in a common sense or other sense. In fact, it appears not to be a burning crime at all under state statute. Malicious destruction of property may be it.

OWB

Could also be something local about unauthorized fire, or needing a permit to burn anything, or some such.

2/17 Air Cav

Sure. I doubt this qualifies as a warming fire.

2/17 Air Cav

The William C Lee house does look like a plantation house. In fact, it looks like a smaller version of Bobby Lee’s home. As for the speculated mistake, the statue of William, replete with bloused boots and c cap could only be mistaken by Helen Keller as Bobby Lee and only if she were not allowed to touch it. But the error speculated about is humorous, if ridiculous.

If you want to help get this repaired, the address is:

General William C. Lee Airborne Museum
209 W Divine Street
Dunn, NC 28334

Send it in memory of Jonn Lilyea, Infantry Platoon Sergeant (Ret.), US Army.

He was Airborne, too, you know.

OldSoldier54

That’s a good idea, Sis.

OWB

Great idea!

IMHO it’s only a matter of time until they get even more STUPID…

Nazis toppled statues and memorials they didn’t like, ditto with commies as well as ISIS, a fanatic is a fanatic is a fanatic and I wonder how soon we’ll hear about some of them getting shot when they try their shit in Red State America?

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where the townfolk burn down anything science related in a religious fervor. Including a Christian Science reading room…

Some idiot recently spray painted “fredom” [sic] on the R. E. Lee statue in Charlottesville….funny, these agitators for statue removal or school name change (e.g. Staunton, VA) don’t suddenly see an increase in GPA and SAT scores of the young people who are so awfully hurt and downtrodden by historical references few even have any accurate knowledge of…

This is why we can’t have nice things. The current generation’s lack of history in their school babysitting, passing as education.

A Proud Infidel®™

Just WTF do they “teach” in publik shcoolz and kolledjes these days other than just tell them they’re special, they’re always right as long as they follow the agenda, this world owes them everything and to always just feel good about themselves no matter what?

OAE CPO USN Ret

Can we vandalize the vandals?

CCO

The closest I came to being airborne was jumping off the logs at basic, but I did spend my last six weeks or so at may alma mater in Lee Dorm. I hope the general’s statue gets put back right.

jonp

Wife and I visited the museum not long ago as I have an interest in that, live not too far and jumped out of perfectly good aircraft myself. Nice little museum.
As an aside, out daughter is going Airborne this fall. All The Way And Then Some!

A Proud Infidel®™

I was a “Leg” my entire career, but I’m all for dropping the perp(s) off in the tender embraces of an Infantry Unit on Fort Bragg for use as Hand to Hand Combat practice dummies!

100 yard down range practice targets.
If they survive, they get to police up ALL the brass on the range.

Arms extended while strapped to a rotating plate so you can make them spin either way.

I would double security at Ft. Lee until the vandals are locked up.

Ret_25X

I”m betting a nickle that the perps work or are stationed on Fort Lee…

Ret_25X

or they are family members of someone stationed on Ft Lee…
