Proposal for Women Registering for the Draft

Previous attempts, to get women to register for the draft hit a road block. A key argument against this earlier proposal was that women didn’t serve in combat roles. Now that women are able to serve in combat roles, that earlier argument is being challenged.

If that proposal is accepted and made law, women who are 18-25 would be required to register for the draft.

Women registering for the draft was just one of the items considered. A panel is looking at recommendations to get more Americans to do public service.

From  Military.com:

Panel members said that, in visiting 24 sites around the country, they found alarming misunderstandings of military and public service among students as well as shortfalls in civic education — knowledge they say is essential to raising interest in public service.

According to the panel, young people who receive quality civics education are four times more likely to engage in public service, but education is sorely lacking. One survey said just 26 percent of Americans can name all three branches of government.

Did they mean, “…Just 26 percent of Americans can name all three chambers of government”? We’ll let a certain young “green initiatives” New York Representative handle that. In the meantime…

This study appears to be in an exploratory stage. Many have argued that young Americans could participate in some good public service in order to improve their citizenship. This could be military service, civilian federal service, or a volunteer service like the Peace Corps.

During the colonial period, they had this partially addressed through a need for collective defense… militia training. The idea was that once a male reached a certain age, he was required to muster with his local militia, and be subject to inspection, conducting drills, etc.

Heinlein, anyone?

If so, I particularly like the ‘full voting citizenship for vets only” provision.

Strictly speaking, it wasn’t only for vets, it’s just that military service was the most common means of earning citizenship. Heinlein wasn’t too specific about it, but he did say there were other forms of civic/public service which could earn it. On the other hand, he also had certain jobs, like law enforcement, being exclusively for vets.

Mad Bricky

I couldn’t agree more! Even more than being vets,LE should be combat veterans or at least well trained and screened in tactical operations to weed out the nutters and emotionally unstable assholes who would shoot before thinking! I would love to see equal rights in draft registration too!

HMC Ret

FINALLY: Mandatory service to country, not necessarily in the military. It’s about time. And it probably won’t get enough traction.

The progs will never allow that. Too many Gender Studies majors might have their barista careers interrupted.

OWB

Just imagine the fun having some second lt whose only gainful employment had been as a barista attempting to “lead” any of us anywhere.

Uh – no.

HMC Ret

Maybe those who were a barista in civvyland could be the COL’s coffee bitch.

A few women forced the military into allowing females into combat roles. There is now no reason for them not to be subjected to the draft, just as their male counterparts are. It’s called the Law of Unintended Consequences.

And it can be a bitch.

SFC D

Ladies, you demanded equality, you should have it. Equality in all things, not just the things you like. You feel those teeth in your ass? It’s reality, and it always has it’s way with you.

MAJ Arkay

Y’all can stop with the sarcasm. A whole bunch of us have advocated for us being subject to the draft for decades, even in the face of bull-headed males who somehow thought we wouldn’t want it.

The justification for not doing so has long become obsolete.

Fair is fair. And I totally agree with Heinlein…

SFC D

I wasn’t being sarcastic. There are far too many people that demand what someone else has, without looking at the responsibility that comes with it. Reality bites those people in the ass. Hard. And ma’am, please make note of the fact that I deliberately used the term “people” and made no reference to sex, gender, or whatever term is in vogue today.

OWB

Who said it was unintended?

Martinjmpr

Or, as an alternative, how about registering NOBODY for the draft since it is a huge boondoggle anyway. I wonder how many high paying DoD jobs are involved in a “selective service” system that we will never use?

That’s money that could go for things we actually use, like equipment or housing for the troops we have.

Short of an alien invasion, it’s hard to imagine any military scenario that would require the acquisition of huge amounts of cannon fodder.

Just cut the wasteful, stupid program already.

OWB

We are in the midst of an alien invasion now and aren’t really using the military for repelling it.

But, your point makes as much sense as anything else being posited.

The two in the front have the booger hook thing down pat.
The two in the rear are watching a whole different movie.

Draft everybody. Keep the grain toss the chaff.

Ex-PH2

I am fully in support of this whole thing. Serve your country, period.

SGT Ted

If we’re going to have draft registration and tie access to Federal Education Benefits to being registered, there’s no good reason to exclude women from it. Even if they aren’t in combat roles, they should still be subject to it.

Slick Goodlin

If military conscription is ever re-instituted and women are drafted, I believe a program of, combat arms,”affirmative action”, must also be implemented for female draftees.

For too many years women were denied the opportunities of serving in the Infantry, Armor, Artillery and Combat Engineer Branches.

A program to funnel female draftees exclusively into these branches would correct this imbalance and afford them exiting career enhancing opportunities unfairly denied to them for so long.

26Limabeans

Puts a whole new meaning to Social Justice Warrior.

JacktheJarhead

Then find out the joys of combat arms in their later years with bad backs, aching joints and bad knees.

Did they mean, “Just 26 percent of Americans can name all three chambers of government”?

She is currently the gift that keeps on giving, so much so that her own party is trying to quietly close the lid on that particular Pandora…

As far as registering women it should be done, there’s even a decent argument to be made for some manner of compulsory service. There should be a means of addressing the simple reality that with less than 1% of the public serving and those serving today tend to be from families that have previous service we are creating a separate warrior class that becomes less connected to the public and government that oversees their deployment and utilization.

When the discomfort of any armed conflict is not born my a large number of Americans it’s all too easy to pay a perfunctory lip service to support for the troops and their families and the issues they face from multiple deployments or sub par health care for massive injuries suffered while serving.

I understand all the reasons against compulsory service and I appreciate the reality behind all of those reasons, but the idea from day one of kindergarten that sometime before you get to go to college your nation will require you to bear the full weight of participation in the Republic sends a message to every family that perhaps we ought to be paying attention to what our politicians are doing with the young men and women we all claim to care about, yet do nothing to actually bring home and return to their families.

And service without waivers of any nature, you get picked you’re going.

When the sons of lawyers, politicians and doctors get yelled at by the sons and daughters of blue collar American workers as part of their early life experiences perhaps when we actually need to utilize those military members there will be a true need and not another imaginary hobgoblin designed to frighten the public into compliance.

Fyrfighter

Well said, as always VOV.. I may not agree with everything you post, but you always do so in an eloquent and insightful way that makes me think..Though in this case, as I said, I do agree fully.
Thanks!

This is my view:

We are already producing quality war fighters of the female persuasion. Keep that up and scrub any that don’t meet standards across all branches, just like the other persuasion.

Keep up this up.

Then always recruit smart, healthy, smokin’ hot and capable troops …

Certainly this will help.

5th/77th FA

Agree Master Chief. Going by the picture above there appears to only be 2 that would meet all of those requirements.

And that is presuming that those two are healthy.

Maybe this reinstitution of the draft is being pushed by the Canucks. Canada would gain a nice population boost by an American Draft.

rgr769

Likely, a lot of the 18 to 25 lovely females that aren’t lesbianese or wannabe transgenders will move north over the border, thus improving the Canuckian gene pool.

Yay!!! If you do…Please come to Northern Alberta. I just made some moose jerky.

Forgot to mention:

We need a Congress approved best of best all branch annual Swim Suit Calendar.

This will help too …

FuzeVT

Screw it, if there are no differences between men and women then why not draft them. I’m not for women in combat roles but I don’t seem to be in charge of much in my post Marine Corps life so it’s not my decision. I say if the libs say they want infantry(wom)men, then draft them and have them adopt men’s standards for PFTs and CFTs.

There. I’ve fixed the world.

(Sorry. I’m angry tonight.)

2/17 Air Cav

That’s angry? Cripes. My blood pressure went down reading that. You really need to work on that, FuzeVT.

2/17 Air Cav

Okay, here’s my take. First, women shall not be drafted. Why? Because they are women. Second, those who enlist must be either support staff or nurses. Third, no pants. Women will wear skirts and be womanly. Fourth, there is no fourth.

Ex-PH2

Curmudgeons!

If women want “equals” in everything, then it includes “equals” in the military and registering for the draft.

There is no 2-way street on this. It is put up or shut up. I have felt that way since I first signed up and I refuse to change my view.

You want “equality”? Then take “responsibility” with it, too or shut up!

SEAL TWO

Too many people sure enough want “equality,” but they want it to be “selective equality.” They want to be equal in all of those things that might feed a ravenous ego, but don’t want to pay the price. I don’t want my daughter ever registering for the draft, and based on what I experienced while “keeping the world safe for democracy,” I’d go to prison before I’d let them take her. Hell, I’d even volunteer to go in her place, except for the fact that I’m too old, damaged, beat up and fat for the military (as I once knew it, anyway) to have me.

Roger in Republic

EX, as my sainted mama always said, “Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die’.

Roh-Dog

If all the womens goes out an’ fight’n, who’sin gonna make all the bay-bees?!
How about middle ground, figure out how to make dudes carry a child, then there’ll be a reason for drafting females.
Oh, and make the chicks tougher so they can combat arms.
Or just leave good enough alone.
Progress ain’t necessarily…
Less TAHing, more bourboning.
