Weekend Open Thread
In honor of the fine photos of the King Tut Exhibit from this article earlier in the week, here ya go. (smile)
The popping sound you hear is SJW snowflake heads exploding due to the lyrics. (smile) That skit probably couldn’t be broadcast today due to being deemed “too offensive” by the “Progressives” controlling the media.
Don’t ya just love the Left’s hypocrisy today concerning artistic license and freedom of expression?
Enjoy the Weekend Open Thread, everyone. And hey: be careful out there, OK?

You may feel free to kowtow to me throughout the year. Additionally, feel free to send gifts to show your love and admiration.
RIP, Jonn. I miss you
Will have to settle for 3rd, and was abusing F5 key, distracted by the opening to a classic Gunsmoke scene. Another TV show that couldn’t be made today, what with all the gun violence, drinking, women in low cut dresses, horses being ridden hard. The horror. Enjoy your reign. Don’t be fooled by the prize located in Webster’s between rations and VD.
I like your style, Your Lordship.
I can remember when SNL was truly funny and almost every person on the show was worth watching. I remember ‘… live in a van down by the river’ as being one of the funniest skits.
Today, it’s nothing but a bunch of class B comics trying to outdo one another to disrespect conservatives and RINOs.
Congrats HMC, may you enjoy your week on the throne! Happy weekend to all my friends at TAH!
Congrats, HMC Ret for being FIRST! in the First WOT of 2019…
(Your “1st” does count, correct?)
This is a good sign for 7 January 2018 that you & 5th/77th FA were 1st & 3rd..
You both know the drill (and may the best team win)…
rtr
Doesn’t count.
You have to say:
FIRST!!!!1111
PRESENT and I claim Honorary First once again.
((((OVER))))
Drat! Missed it by *that much.*
Congrats, Chief!
Congrats Chief, no contest no loss.
America FIRST
But not me! Comcast is throttling my account
2nd! woot
First
Not even close,
Kudos to the Chief.
Whiskey all around.
What a great idea, Pat!
I love this music but I’m even more in love with the old castles. I read occasionally of someone finding a huge cache of coins and other artifacts that are anywhere from 500-2000 + years old. Many (most ?) European countries require that the finder notify the state of the find. I do believe they are then given the value (all or part … IDK) of the find and the artifacts go to museum(s).
I’m busy working from home, also listening to a Movie I never saw before with Leonard Nimoy in a western, Catlow.
Interesting. Occasionally I catch something on TV (cable) I’ve never seen before.
TGIF, This Generous Incredible Furlough!! Bitches.
Have a good safe weekend.
Good movie. Also has Yul Brenner and Richard Crenna. Love those old westerns. Don’t recall much other than I enjoyed it maybe 30 years ago. Now my interested is raised so I might see if it is on Netflix.
Might dig a little on your local broadcast (antenna) digital sub channels, see if they run METV, (Memorable Entertainment), H&ITV (Heroes & Icons), THIS TV. They run a lot of the old school Cowboy Movies and shows.
Most of the broadcast channels in the South are competing with cable by broadcasting these digital sub channels and they can be picked up with a set of rabbit ears or a small out door yagi/dipole.
I watch 24 channels of “free TV”, includes all major networks and PBS. Damn a cable company, they can kiss my ass. Piggy backing n@tf1i@ks thru the “stream”.
8th!
Dang! Congrats HMC.
Have a great weekend y’all!
Long live the Republic.
And long may Dani Boi maintain minus 6 ft AGL.
He has long since assumed ground temperature. Should have simply fessed up and disappeared. But, no, this was his last ‘in your face’ act.
A round of bourbon to that!
Trash that takes itself out, simply beautiful.
Marines putting a female platoon in a 3rd Battalion company at PI. Claims this is just an experiment, but we all know how this is going to go….

Three days out of the month, they will be freaking dangerous.
that is one of my favorite Steve Martin routines. Still funny.
Beginning of the New Year update to the TAH Coveted Book of WOT “Firsts.”
Starting Page 10 of entries that date back to 24 Apr 15 when AW1Ed got the initial “First” at 5:13 pm.
Total of 195 entries so far. Today’s “1st” by HMC Ret is his fifth overall “First”/”1st”.
Just letting all of you Miscreant Dickweeds/Dickweedettes out there know that there is indeed a real hand-written, easily reviewable pen/ink/paper log being maintained as a back-up just in case the Flux Capacitor goes Tits-Up or Skynet becomes self aware and erases the AlGoreNet. (Smile)
Is it leather bound?
Yep, with Embossed Gold Lettering and a binder lock to prevent tampering.
Please don’t forget the quill pen. You are still using it, aren’t you, Mr. Claw?
Yes Sir. The quill pen I’m currently using is a 29 and 1/4 inch long Cock Pheasant tail feather harvested from a free range (not game farm raised) bird./s
Just don’t ask Claw exactly what kind of leather.
Brrrr… somethings are best left unsaid.
Reminds me of Silence of the Lambs, the scariest movie I know.
5th “First?” That makes HMC Ret a WOT Ace. Congrats, Chief!
I have to ask, though, Claw, is there a copy on file with the Library of Congress?
Not that I know of Chief. Keeping a pen/paper log of WOT Firsts has been strictly a “Little Green Book of NCO Business” and the Library of Congress doesn’t have a high enough of a security clearance to see that./smile
I got into the WOT just in time to congratulate HMC Ret for his “first,” so I’ll just leave this here for everyone and be on my merry way. I hope you enjoy it! DID YOU KNOW…? Did a musician disappear just a few years after recording an album called “UFO”? By Commissioner Wretched Happy New Year! It’s 2019. That’s an amazing thing … our calendar says we are now into the 19th year of the 21st century of the current millennium. But wait, you may be saying. Your math is off, you may want to say. If the century started in 2000, wouldn’t this really be the 20th year of the 21st century? Well … no. It’s simple. The year 2000 was not part of the 21st century. It was the last year of the 20th. See, there was never a year “0.” If someone had been using our current calendar when the millennia changed way back when, the dates would have gone from 1 BC to 1 AD without a stop in the middle. That makes the year 100 the last year of the first century, and the year 2000 the last year of the 20th century. You’re welcome. Regardless of its position in the calendar, it is now 2019, and as I alluded in an earlier tome here, it’s a blank slate, ready for you to inscribe your life upon it. Make it a great one, okay? (And if you do, share your secret with me.) Some things don’t change with the new year, of course. Like trivia. And the best way to reach me – via e-mail, at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com. Write on! Now, for the first set of trivia for 2019! Did you know … … people with blue eyes have a higher tolerance for pain? They also have a higher tolerance for alcohol. (Coincidence? You be the judge.) … the average person consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving? That is enough to gain 1.3 pounds. (At last! Something in which I am above average!!) … Ronald McDonald, the popular clown spokesperson (spokesclown?) for the McDonald’s restaurant chain, is… Read more »
Werner Klemperer was a German Jew, and John Banner and Leon Askin were Austrian Jews, and they all fled to the USA after Hitler took over. All three served in the US Army during WWII. Klemperer served in Special Services, Banner served in USAAF psyops, and Askin served in MI as a linguist…
Cox Cable guy was here this AM. Been on the phone with them several times but they were never able to talk me through the problem and fix it. Guy changed out the little box that sits by the TV. Not only did we get the TV back, it is much sharper than previously. On the phone yesterday, she talked me through the steps to bring up such and such, and it said the RF Signal was -40, which she said was way out of kilter. IDK. I tried to recruit the guy to joining the Navy. He said he had seriously been thinking about it. With his electronic skills, he might be able to go in as what we used to call a ‘push button petty officer’ or E-4 right out of boot. IDK if that is still a possibility in today’s Navy. I could just sense he would be a good addition to the Navy. Ever talk with a person and try to talk them into the military? I do it a few times each month but do so only with those who really seem to be squared away. Those with an obvious ‘tude I don’t bother with. He was 25, so he has several years to think about it. He also was a heavy equipment operator for a few years in his late teens as well as working in the housebuilding field. He said he had thought about being a Seabee. I suggested an electronics field. IDK, I thought he would be a good fit in the Navy. The military isn’t what it was when I joined in the 60s. Today, there is endless PC crap, trannies this and trannies that and those who don’t which head to use. Still, it can be a wonderful career for someone with the attitude and skills to make it work for them. He is a single parent with a son. He has sole custody. I said that would be no problem, he could give a power of attorney with his parents when deployed. I have no idea how I got… Read more »
Recent postings have reminded me of something I encountered some time ago. The US Navy had a shop down the passageway from my USAF office. The boss was a CPO and it was crewed by several PO1’s & PO2’s. One of the PO2’s was a nice enough person except he was a pain in the rear to everyone who ever met him. His favorite thing to ensure the CPO was mad at him was to address her as Mister Whateverherlastname was.
Is it or was it proper to address a CPO as mister?
I would consider that a sign of passive aggressive behavior coming from someone who knew the difference. Coming from a civilian, it would not bother me so much.
O-1 to O-3’s in the Navy were addressed as “mister” years ago.
Addressing a CPO as “mister”… one way ticket to doing the shittiest job that needs to be done foe a very, very long time.
IMHO, the House Democrats better be careful what they wish for. It’s gonna backfire on them, especially their move to eliminate the Electoral College:
“House Democrats Move To Eliminate Electoral College, Limit Presidential Power and More In First Days Back”:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/house-democrats-move-to-eliminate-electoral-college-limit-presidential-pardon-power-and-more-in-first-days-back
“Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., introduced a pair of constitutional amendments that would eliminate the Electoral College as well as strictly prohibiting a president from pardoning himself, family members or associates.”
Cohen, in particular, called the Electoral College “distorting” and “outdated” in a statement regarding his proposals.
“Americans expect and deserve the winner of the popular vote to win office,” he said. “More than a century ago, we amended our Constitution to provide for the direct election of U.S. Senators. It is past time to directly elect our President and Vice President.”
Cohen is also the idiot who wanted to award the Purple Heart to FBI sleazebag Peter Strzok; this guy Cohen is a fucking gasbag moron…
Even better, he’s the jagoff white guy that tried to join the Congressional Black Caucus.
Where do they find these morons?
Mason: Perhaps Cohen wanted to be the next Sammy Davis, Jr…
Impossible. Sammy had a great sense of humor.
Favorite Sammy story: At a celebrity golf tournament, the announcer starts his blather of “Sammy Davis Jr, star of stage and screen…blah blah” and ends up asking “So, Sammy, what’s your handicap?” Sammy sez “I’m a black one-eyed Jew – what’s yours?”
David:

!!!
Good One!
Yup. He can Cohen Fuck himself.
Doesn’t matter what Cohen introduces. Congress can’t change the Electoral College. Only a Constitutional Amendment can do that … and while this moron might get 2/3 of a delusional House to agree, the chances of 2/3 of the Senate going along are slim, and getting 3/4 of the states to agree is in the realm of “not in this lifetime.”
It’s a pandering to his base, nothing more.
Skank Alert. FIRST (ht to HMC Ret) thing that pops up is big pic of Granny Pigolosi.

(Reposted from this week’s ROT)
A 68 yr old man walked out of Anita’s Mexican Grill in West Palm Beach last week. He’s limping because he had pulled a muscle. 68. Limping. Easy mark for a thug. A guy walks up behind him and hits him over the head with a bottle. The victim is bleeding and his eardrum is ruptured and the thug hits him again while demanding his phone and money. The victim pulled his muscle b/c, as a former champion kickboxer, he was training. He let the thug have it. Said he felt the thug’s ribs break. Police are looking for the thug who got away with his life, no money, and no cell phone.
Another case of poor victim selection skills.
Broken ribs- it only hurts when you breath. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer punk.
Hope he gets a pneumothorax. I’s say to hospitalize him but he probably doesn’t have insurance so we would end up paying for it. Right … it’s gonna hurt every time he breathes. Although I hope he recovers.
Approaching one year anniversary of Daniel A. Bernarh’s demise … and he is still dead.

Hi MCPO NYC USN Ret. – any word on the update concerning the activities of the human lawn dart prior to his death by deacceleration trauma?
As usual, late to the party. First sunny rain-free day in a while, although the hill my house sits upon resembles pudding more than anything else. So, I was out trying to replace the window gasket on Mrs. GB’s big SUV.
Blamed replacement I bought was too thick to allow the window to close – had to clean up the old one, add some gasket-maker sauce, then use a 2.5″ snippet of the new gasket to fill in the gap.
A good weekend to all my fellow TAHellions, all hail HMC Ret on his throne of First First of 2019.
For IDC SARC – Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez dancing back in college:
Yep IDCSarc would hit that. I’d hit “it” with a 2×4. Too bad “it” didn’t take a header/HANO off that building roof.
Unfortunately, that is what will be running this country when the downfall happens.
Well, if you’ve already given up, fine. But be careful what you wish for; you might get left behind.
I haven’t given up and am not wishing for this, but I am realistic and an historian. Good news for me is I will probably be dead. Bad news for my Grandchildren is a lot of US will be dead. We see the damage that the dims have/did do during barry’s 8 years. They are fighting dTrump tooth and nail just because he is the dTrump. Their desire to destroy this Republic is strong, and as we have posted before, the free stuff army that is already indoctrinated will be reinforced by the stolen votes.
I will fight for this country until I run out of bullets and blood. Us and those like us are a dying breed and we are not refilling the ranks with like minded people. The professional politicians are winning and the greatest Republic ever formed is gonna lose. It’s sad to think about it. I hope I’m wrong.
^^THIS^^
Perfectly explained. I feel the exact same way.
Well, you ARE wrong.
Some bimbo from the Bronx gets elected and thinks she’s in charge of something, and you start sobbing over that.
Some dweebe cow from Michigan says the equivalent of ‘we’re gonna roll our tanks right down State Street’, like those jackass Larouch Democrats in the 1980s and you just roll over and die.
You have ALREADY given up and you’re sitting in a corner, crying your eyes out for ‘used to be’ with no regard to other people who do NOT think we’re done for.
Let me know where to ship your box of tissues. I have stuff to do.
I agree with you there Ex-PH2. I also refuse to rollover and wave the white flag myself. To me, the United States is something that’s genuinely worth fighting for and things will not get better if we just stand around and mope. We need to actively work to make things better as I am not going to let my children and grandchildren (for when I decide to have any and this includes my nieces, nephews, and cousins) be forced to live under a totalitarian bastardization of the United States that Left dreams of and salivates over and if the Left wants to fight us to stop us, then I say let them try. Bring it on. I’m not too worried as the 2016 election has shown the Left that there are still plenty of people who believe in this country and don’t agree with their beliefs plus many that have turned their backs on them (it royally pisses them off and I absolutely love it). If our country can survive a civil war, then we can survive this whirlwind.
Us and those like us are a dying breed and we are not refilling the ranks with like minded people.

Make her bark like a fox, IDC SARC!
I’d have hate or grudgefucked her back in my bachelor days just to get MY rocks off!
Made my bi-annual pilgrimage down to the county DMV to renew the license plate stickers on both our vehicles* for the next two years. Took me a grand total of about seven minutes to get it done and my pocket is $246.50 lighter.
* 2005 GMC PU and 2017 Chevy Trax
And….. Let the rants begin on how long the line is/how much it costs elsewhere in the US./s
Although California manages to do routine annual DMV registration by mail or online, the gotcha is they require a bi-annual smog test. And the test isn’t for just emissions; a few years ago, I had a Cherokee flunk the test for having the wrong kind of rubber compound in a rubber hose for an air breather. Naturally, this required replacement, re-testing, and an additional fee.
If the Cherokee flunked, and you are suspicious lawyer up and Sioux.
I have a friend whose vehicle flunked because he had installed a catch can on his vehicle’s PCV system. He had to remove it and do a retest, for an additional fee, of course.
Oops. Just now realized “me no speakie the Englay very good.”
I meant to say “Biennial”, not “Bi-annual.” Surprised Sister Mary Grace hadn’t whacked me with a ruler yet.

Dear Cuomo:

Yesterday a newly-elected dipshitcrat said the following in reference to our President:
By Nicholas Fandos
Jan. 4, 2019
WASHINGTON — Impeachment was always going to hang heavily over the 116th Congress. But less than 12 hours into Democratic control, a freshman House Democrat’s exuberant, expletive-laden promise crashed the bipartisan bonhomie of opening day and thrust President Trump’s fate to the forefront of a divided Washington.
In a speech to liberal activists at a bar near the Capitol on Thursday night, Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan promised profanely to impeach Mr. Trump, drawing wild cheers. The applause from the crowd convened by MoveOn.org might as well have stood in for millions of liberals across the country, who helped hand Democrats the House majority in part to punish the president for flouting legal and ethical norms.
But in her choice of words, Ms. Tlaib flouted other norms, drawing rebukes from Republicans and worried words from more senior House Democrats.
“People love you and you win,” Ms. Tlaib told the crowd. “And when your son looks at you and says: ‘Momma, look, you won. Bullies don’t win.’ And I said, ‘Baby, they don’t.’ Because we’re going to go in there, and we’re going to impeach the motherfucker.”
Yes, she actually called him a motherfucker. I question the moral bent of someone, particularly a female, who would PUBLICALLY use such a word in reference to another. I’m wondering when the RINOs will start fighting back. I wonder when there will be riots by conservatives. I wonder when conservatives will use profanity when referencing Nancy Polisi? We’re sitting on our thumbs, folks. We have the high road but unfortunately that is not doing us much good.
Sad…ain’t it?
5th/77th FA: Yes, it is sad. I believe we have lost the country.
Oh. My. Dog!!!!
I read that article carefully. This midget brained dweebette from Michigan is a freshman who thinks she’s going to run roughshod over the likes of Pelosi et al., or Schumer and Feinstein. That should be a classic and battle of the Titans vs. the pod people.
“In a speech to liberal activists at a bar near the Capitol on Thursday night, Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan promised profanely to impeach Mr. Trump, drawing wild cheers.”
This idjit wants to wear her hijab in session. The rule is, and has always been, NO HEAD COVERSINGS IN CONGRESS.
She made that speech AT A BAR – did you even SEE that part?
Or did your bleary eyes just bypass it because you’re more interested in whimpering and complaining than reading the article thoroughly?
She was AT A BAR. She was NOT in Congress, nor was it in session. And in case you missed that, because you’re ready to toss in the towel right now, read this part:
“But in her choice of words, Ms. Tlaib flouted other norms, drawing rebukes from Republicans and worried words from more senior House Democrats.”
Way to go, Tlaib. Piss off the very people who might listen to you, you moron.
If anything will keep those Ancient Mariners Pelosi and Feinstein in place, and in control, it is THESE CLOWNS WHO THINK THEY OWN THE CONGRESS BECAUSE THEY GOT VOTED IN. They cab just as easily be voted out. And have you NEVER heard of either House censuring someone for being a jackass?
Between this hijab-wearing bimp and Obviously Confused, there is enough obnoxious crap going on to piss off the people who DO have seniority and DO have the power to squash them flat.
And I do NOT mean GOPers. I mean senior Democrats in both Houses of Congress.
When that sinks in, let me know, will you?
While you’re sorting that out, I’m going to go make some popcorn. I just laid in a new supply.
What’s a Muzzie woman doing in a bar??? Where’s a mutawa when you need one?
Just proves the low class of muzz-cows and explains why ‘slamonazi males have no respect for their women.
I think she’s done a fine job of letting the entire country know that she is just some foul-mouthed ignoramus who does not respect anything and who is a colossal spoiled brat, based on what she said.
I’m waiting for the backlash to start up from both parties. I hope the pot she’s stirring burns her.
Oh, that was SO mean of me!!!! More popcorn!
I hope they make her lick the shitpot spoon every time she stirs it!
Saw the movie Bumblebee today after the Cox Cable guy left. Save your money, folks, that movie sucks major sausage. First 45 minutes was a snooze fest and I would give it a 0/10. The last 45 minutes I would give a 4/10. It truly sucked. Going to see the Ralph movie next week. Previews showed upcoming movie about a dog. Gonna be a good movie. Taking The Russian out for a movie and a meal? Makes her happy beyond words.
The Missus and I went and saw “Mule” starring Clint Eastwood a few weeks ago, great flick!
Saw it on New Year’s eve. It is another excellent flick by fearless Clint. I don’t think he has ever made a bad movie. Even his spaghetti westerns, in which he was just an actor, are fun to watch.
I have been trying to talk The Russian into seeing The Mule with me, but NO WAY. So we go to flicks with which we can both agree. OK, OK, she agrees and I just tag along. I’ll wait until the Great One comes to Netflix or that red thing. Next week I think the movie of the week will be Ralph Breaks The Internet. Yeah, I know, a real snooze fest. We saw the Grinch twice. Really a good flick. A friend went to see Holmes and said half the audience left before the film ended. He left later on in the movie and asked for a refund. Apparently, that’s not a thing. He didn’t get any money back. Something I’ve discovered, really. It seems that the flicks that are the most highly rated are the ones that suck sausage. Not always. Folks, if you want to burn your money, go see Bumblebee. Horrible movie. Sadness: Heard 40+ miners were killed in a cave-in Sunday in northern Afghanistan. I recall those 30+ (?) miners who were trapped in a cave for several weeks a few years ago. Neither side is blinking on the government ‘shutdown’ and people are raising hell they are not getting their tax refund. DRats will use this against President Trump in 2020. I usually vote Republican; not always but usually. I will vote against any Republican who trashes President Trump in an attempt to garner votes. He has to stay in power long enough to nominate at least one more to the Supreme Court. I consider SCOTUS to be as important as the Houses of Congress. It’s where all bad ideas go to die. I see the DRats are going to impeach the President. Good luck with that. The Republicans need to bring heat to wide load. Her and blowjob willie are the most corrupt due in recent memory. If President Trump gets reelected, he should lower the boom on al sharpton concerning his taxes. These DRats function with impunity b/c they will scream rassist/homophobia/war on women/war on children, etc. Win reelection and then spend… Read more »

OK, found the site. Go to teen.com and find the courses. They also offer many other courses including courses in forensics.
I give up. NO, it’s not teen.com, it’s TEEX.COM. IGU. Sorry. I’m genuinely hoping the first one, the wrong one, isn’t a site for scantily clad teen girls or boys. I’m not going there to look. Crap, I really should proof my posts.

Now if we could continue to elect more Patriots like this, it would go a long way to turning around the descent that the professional politicians have foisted upon our country.
Here is another “Feel Good” story worth sharing and posting.
Good Riddance!!!!
“Terrorist Behind 2000 USS COLE Bombing Killed In Airstrike:

Rest In Peace to all who lost their lives on the USS COLE.
Never Forget.
I woked with the man who was the Command Master Chief on the USS Cole when it was attacked – James Parlier. A good man and a natural leader. Did everything he could to keep his Sailors together and concentrated on the mission at hand that day, and for days afterwards.
He tole myself and other members of the CPO Mess that he received no support from the MCPON at that time (not even a fucking phone call) – felt like “the establishment” treated the Ship’s CO (CDR Kirk Lippold) like crap over the whole matter.

Wow…Wow…Wow…
So sad…
Thanks for the add on HMCS, it’s tid bits like this that bring me here and cause me to camp out on this site every day. CMC Parlier’s actions remind me of the majority of Senior NCOs and Officers I was blessed to serve with way back yonder. We didn’t seem to have the multitude of “politicians in uniform” like has been so prevalent in the last several decades. Guess I was lucky.
To give you an idea of the leader, when CMC Parlier was done with helping leadership with immediate needs to make sure the ship was not going to sick and accounting for the crew, he went down to the triage area and started treating patients with the ship’s IDC (CMC was a Independent Duty HM before being picked up for the CMC program).
I hope that Jim and his family are doing well.
“…and another one bites the dust…”
Good riddance to the trash, may he become one of the 72 virgins in paradise receiving the barbed cock of satan.

Yeah, Steve Martin’s “King Tut” would be considered “offensive” by today’s SNOWFLAKES and I think they ought to be cooped up in a auditorium and forced to watch “Blazing Saddles”!
QUESTION: Anybody know where I can buy a Blue and Gold or Black and Gold Dive Shirt these days?
I can’t find one and the Uniform Shop doesn’t carry them or I just can’t find the right key words.
Not a big deal, but all mine are ratty AF.
Thanks in advance.
Found em….thanks

They have a good supply of the shirts … maybe something there
Plenty of stuff right outta my service record, but no dive shirts. Thank you for the recommendation though.

Someone is in the jackpot. Can you say retirement? See there, I knew you could. Love that ‘deer in the headlights’ look when he realizes he’s being filmed.
The look on the idiot CSM’s face was the classic “Just dorked the fucking squeakhole” look.
He done fucked up…
Cool hairdo.
Allison IS a pussy. He challenged the CSM and, as far as I am concerned, got away lucky. Unfortunately, I don’t think the Army will see it that way.
I liked the way he was bitch slapping him at the end.
On This Date In History: 5 January 1781 – A British naval expedition led by Benedict Arnold burned Richmond, Va., causing Governor Thomas Jefferson to flee as the Virginia militia, led by Sampson Mathews, defended the city. It was Arnold’s greatest success as a British commander. Arnold’s 1,600 largely Loyalist troops sailed up the James River at the beginning of January, eventually landing in Westover, Virginia. Leaving Westover on the afternoon of January 4, Arnold and his men arrived at the virtually undefended capital city of Richmond the next afternoon. Virginia’s governor, Thomas Jefferson, had frantically attempted to prepare the city for attack by moving all arms & other Military Stores and records from the city to a foundry five miles outside Richmond. As news of Arnold’s unexpectedly rapid approach reached him, Jefferson then tried to orchestrate their removal to Westham, seven miles further north. He was too late–Arnold’s men quickly reached and burned the foundry and then proceeded towards Westham, which Jefferson had asked the formidable Prussian military advisor Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben to guard. Finding von Steuben, Arnold chose to return to Richmond, burning much of the city the following morning. Only 200 militiamen responded to Governor Jefferson’s call to defend the capital–most Virginians had already served and therefore thought they were under no further obligation to answer such calls. Despite this untenable military position, the author of the Declaration of Independence was criticized by some for fleeing Richmond during the crisis. Later, two months after Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, he was cleared of any wrongdoing during his term as governor. Jefferson went on to become the leader of the Democratic-Republican Party, and his presidential victory over the Federalists is remembered as The Revolution of 1800. After the war, Benedict Arnold attempted and failed to establish businesses in Canada and London. He died a pauper on June 14, 1801, and lays buried in his Continental Army uniform at St. Mary’s Church, Middlesex, London. To this day, his name remains synonymous with the word “traitor” in the United States. Arnold was one of the best general in the… Read more »

Bwhaaaa
Took me a while to get my three brain cells in alignment to figure it out.
To say Benedict Arnold switched sides because he wasn’t promoted is likely stretching the historical record. It’s probably more accurate to say the main reason Arnold became a traitor was for the money.
Starting in 1778 when he was appointed Governor of Philadelphia, Arnold had been lusting after a young society belle named Peggy Shippen who was the daughter of a wealthy Tory merchant and judge. Apparently, Miss Peggy liked a lavish lifestyle and Arnold, somebody with a perpetual cash flow problem, wanted to keep her happy. They got married in April, 1789.
As it happens, one of Miss Peggy’s old boyfriends was British Major John André who ran the intelligence operation for British General Henry Clinton. When Arnold was appointed commander of the strategic Hudson River strong point at West Point, he used his wife as a proto-Mata Hari to deliver messages to André, and offered to cut a deal to surrender the fortification in return for £20,000.
It might be hard to calculate exactly what that amounts to in today’s dollars, but it’s probably equivalent to at least a metric ass-tonne of cash.
Historians are divided re the primary reason for Arnold’s switching sides and becoming a traitor. The bottom line is, without a doubt, he would NOT have switched sides had he been recognized by the government and promoted. Were there collateral reasons? Yes, but the primary reason, in whose absence he would not have turned traitor, is his not being promoted. Absent that, he would have continued as a hero our army. You can differ all you like about his reasoning, but take that motivation from the equation and he would not have been a turncoat. Of that all historians agree. BTW, he was not even paid the amount the British had promised, which I believe to have been in the neighborhood of several thousand pounds, a tremendous amount of money at the time.
According to Arnold’s own apparently disingenuous memoirs, his motivation was a combination of his disagreement with the French alliance, his difficulties with Congress, and his desire to end the war. It might also be pointed out that the “difficulties with Congress” involved a court martial for misuse of government funds.
It’s probably also reasonable to ask how much higher Arnold expected to rise in rank. He was already a Major General when he betrayed the country, and for somebody with only a few days of military experience prior to the war, that appears to me about as good as it was likely to get. Or did he expect to take over for George Washington?
There’s also the idea that the loss of Arnold amounted to a huge hit to the Continental Army might in fact have been an idea pushed more by the British after Arnold turned than otherwise. One might reasonably ask: If Arnold was so valuable, why did the Americans still end up winning the war?
I’ll cheerfully agree with the notion that Arnold was probably aggressive and wouldn’t back down from a fight. Still, there’s not much evidence he was a particular genius as a strategist or tactician. The fact that he also couldn’t seem to get along with anybody in the Continental Army– except Washington– also points to a personality type who might have proved to be more trouble than he was worth. And there were a number of other commanders who were at least as heroic as Arnold without being a pain in the ass.
Here’s another question: Does it seem likely Arnold would have switched sides if the British had offered to pay nothing? I don’t think so, but YMMV…
“Or did he expect to take over for George Washington?” Numerous primary sources are quoted in this regard. They are available with a little effort on the reader’s part. He felt slighted when he was overlooked and Washington was held in higher regard than was he. I found several references to this with only a cursory review. I don’t know if you are being facetious when you say, “apparently disingenuous memoirs.” I have little faith in the honesty of any document written by one who was a turncoat to his country. While it may be a primary source, it also holds much potential for aggrandizement and its validity should be greatly discounted. Perhaps this was your intent also. “Still, there’s not much evidence he was a particular genius as a strategist or tactician.” I refer you to James Kirby Martin, author of “Benedict Arnold, Revolutionary Hero: An American Warrior Reconsidered” and Cullen University Professor of history at the University of Houston, who refers to Arnold as a ‘battlefield hero’ and who “was a masterful example of brilliant leadership.” I’m assuming being a university professor who has done extensive scholarly research concerning Arnold, he would be knowledgeable of the matter. I believe that would be the equivalent of ‘much evidence’ concerning the subject. I have a copy of this book; I highly recommend it for further research. “If Arnold was so valuable, why did the Americans still end up winning the war?” What? Arnold was the only general who could lead soldiers into battle? Losing him would have been a crushing blow to the Americans from which they would have been unable to recover? Really? It’s good Washington and the other officers were not aware of this. It’s also fortunate that the NCOs and junior troops were not informed. Was money a factor? Yes, but he had a turncoat heart before money entered the equation if the opinions of scholars are given merit. If you need further proof that being overlooked was of more importance than was the matter of money, I refer you to the scholarly writings of Gordon S.… Read more »

In the land of the losers, Phildo is king.
For Ex-PH2 – looks like a certain Chi-town Alderman had 23 guns in his office when it was raided back in November:

He’s a HUGE gun control advocate….
I read that yesterday and all I had to say was ‘do as I say not as I do’. The DRats (and RINOs) talk out of both sides of their mouth. I also found the following, in which the Alderman says he is running for reelection. Also losing $500,000 (yes, half a million dollars) in security details. Just read what this shitbird gets from the taxpayers of Chicago. He’s a damn Alderman FFS. An Alderman needs security details to the tune of half a million dollars? Anyway, read and weep:
Ald. Ed Burke Says He Plans To Seek Reelection, A Day After Extortion Charge Unsealed
January 4, 2019 at 5:22 pm
CHICAGO (CBS)–Chicago Alderman Ed Burke says he’s running for reelection–a day after a federal criminal complaint was unsealed charging the longtime 14th Ward alderman with attempted extortion for allegedly using his position on the City Council to try to steer business to his private law practice.
“I want you, my friends and supporters, to know that I fully intend to seek reelection and I’m hopeful that you and my many friends will continue to do the work you’ve already been doing.”
Burke on Friday agreed to resign as Finance Committee chairman, and is losing his taxpayer-funded police security detail. The committee he once controlled is being stripped of control of the city’s $100 million workers’ compensation program.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said it is moving to disband Burke’s protective detail, including police officers who serve as the alderman’s bodyguards, and a police department SUV he uses for work. The security detail cost Chicago taxpayers more than $500,000 a year.
It’s not yet clear when Burke will officially lose that security detail, but the move could happen as soon as Friday afternoon.
Next week, Emanuel plans to introduce a package of ethics reforms on conflict of interest disclosures and how permits and zoning changes are handled. But, he cautioned, rule changes alone can’t end corruption.
“An individual has to distinguish between their public life and their private business, and they shouldn’t let those lines ever cross,” Emanuel said.
