Two Marines Testify On Harrowing Attack By Angry Antifa Mob

“A dozen Antifa thugs jumped two latino Marines in Philly, accusing them of being ‘Nazis’ and ‘white supremacists’ while calling them ‘spics’ and ‘wetbacks’ at the same time”
United States Marines Alejandro Godinez and Luis Torres were viciously attacked by an angry mob of Antifa fascists in Philadelphia on November 17, 2018.
They appeared in court on Thursday and revealed the details of their harrowing ordeal.

The marines, Alejandro Godinez and Luis Torres, both testified in uniform about the incident, while three marine officers, including their commanding officer, stood in the gallery. The suspects, Thomas Massey and Tom Keenan, who have been linked to antifa on websites and social media, sat together with their individual lawyers and did not speak. [emphasis in original]The marines, who are not from the Philadelphia area, said that they had traveled to the city with other members of their helicopter unit, headquartered at Fort Dix, to attend a Marine event that night at a local hotel ballroom. They said that they had no knowledge of the nearby rally, which drew members of the alt-right as well as a large number of counter-protestors, Keenan and Massey reportedly among them.
According to the marines’ testimony, they were touring historical landmarks near Front and Chestnut streets when suspect Thomas Keenan approached them. Godinez testified that Keenan asked them “Are you proud?,” to which Godinez remembers responding “We are Marines.” Torres said that he remembers Keenan asking “Are you Proud Boys?,” an allusion to one of the alt-right groups behind the rally, and one that Torres said he didn’t understand. “I didn’t know what Proud Boys meant,” he said.
Whatever Keenan said, both marines testified that Keenan, Massey, and approximately ten other people — men and women, some masked and some unmasked — then began attacking them with mace, punches, and kicks, and calling them “nazis” and “white supremacists.”
On the stand, Godinez said that he was “bewildered” by being called a white supremacist and immediately cried out, “I’m Mexican!” After that, as the attack continued, both men said that members of the group, including Keenan, repeatedly used ethnic slurs, including “spic” and “wetback,” against the marines. (There was no testimony that Massey used any such language).
Godinez testified that he was maced at least six times, hit in the head, and kicked in the ribs, and he said that while he was being “stomped,” members of the group, which the judge and the district attorney’s office have both referred to as a “mob,” chanted “fuck him up” over and over again.

I will never accept that hate crime crap. In PA, it’s called “ethnic intimidation.” Whatever it is called, the crime is in the act, in this case assault (felony) and conspiracy (felony.)
I can live with that. Ganging up on folks is and should be a felony. The ethnicity of the attackers or the victims really doesn’t make any difference.
I was never a proponent of hate crimes. A crime is a crime is a crime. It came about, IIRC, as a means of enhancing the sentencing parameters for those who committed crimes against gays and other ‘minority’ groups. Could be wrong. Seems thumping these two Marines should be sufficient to put these missing links in the slammer for several years, but if assigning the hate crime title to it will give them extra years, I’m all for it. Otherwise I think it is a bad idea in search of a cause.
Hate crimes go to motivation, at least that’s the theory. The reality is sometimes different. The reality is that using any pejorative while beating someone, even if the beating was prompted by a road-rage incident, will be hate-crime evidence. Why is it that beating someone for, say, being a fag, is worse than beating him b/c he cut you off in traffic or b/c he dis’ed you on the street? Because the law says so and, if the law says so, then the law is an ass. (Hat tip to Mr. Bumbles.)
Those guys in the mugshots look to be fairly undamaged, so I imagine the Marines were afraid of possible consequences for hitting back.

There were antifas in the fuel tax protests last week in Paris, mixed in with the truckers and cab drivers and commuters. They are the slugs who burned cars, broke shop windows and damaged the Arc de Triomphe memorial. It wasn’t the rest of the crowd.
I watched the gilets jaunes march, which was simply people marching. It wasn’t until the antifas buried in the crowds started throwing things that the police launched teargas canisters at the protesters.

I just off the phone with my sister, who was in Italy when the protests in Paris were going on. She left just ahead of the same thing starting in Italy. She agreed that the “antifas” are no more antifascist than a pink bubble, and that they are mostly anarchists out to break and burn everything in their path.
