Monday Musings Open Thread
Since this is the beginning of the work week for many, here’s a musing regarding a porter’s abandoning a disabled woman… When his shift ended.
A disabled 67-year-old woman was left at the Chicago O’Hare overnight this past weekend. One of her family brought her up to the gate. He checked that the flight was going to go as scheduled, and that his mother would be helped.
Then, the flight was canceled. They sent her to where alternative arrangements could be made for her. The plan was to put her up in a hotel. But, nobody wanted to take her to her assigned hotel.
Additionally, the porter that was assigned to assist her stopped helping her when his shift ended. He “didn’t know how”, so, he called it quits for the night. Ask for help from airline/airport employees maybe?
From CBS Chicago:
They said in addition to losing her bags on the way in, the airline had lost track of her on the way out.
Eventually, security helped family find her hours after. Images shortly after she was discovered show her still in a wheelchair, dressed for her ex-husband’s funeral.
Claude Coltea said his mother was let down by both the airline and the porter.
“All we wanted was someone to pause and say ‘you know what, can we just make sure this human being is safe and then we can all go home,” Coltea said. “Not one person did that.”
For those who know someone in the family with similar ailments as the abandoned woman, this would be a jaw dropper. It’d raise emotions, not good ones either.
Normally, individuals in this situation stand a good chance of being eligible for home therapy to include nurse visits, would require independent living supports, etc.
In my area, there’s the equivalent to the Child Protective Services for adults in her situation… Adult Protective Services.
This woman was left “stranded”; until her family’s efforts to locate her paid off.

Category: Open thread, WTF?
First!
Hope that porter gets his head handed to him.
That’s total scumbag behavior, period.
This is what happens when the attitude of everyone working is that what they are doing is just a job.
It’s just his job to wheel her around, it’s not his job to be her protector to be her caregiver or to be her handicapped transport. So when his shift ended he just went home….
Ouch, at the very least on his way to clock out he could have wheeled her over to the security office and left her there.
I don’t know what anyone else thinks about this stuff but it’s a cold day in hell in before I send an “unattended minor” or unattended disabled person alone on the airline. I’m going with them and flying back alone because no one is going to care about them like I do.
If some misfortune made it so I had to do that I’d sure as hell make sure I didn’t leave the fucking airport until said individual texted me they were on the plane and safely in the air. Her son pushed her off into the airport and went home…nobody checked on her at flight time? Nobody texted mom and asked how she was doing?
This story stinks on every side.
Had to visit the local hospital today for lab work. Lots of people in wheelchairs with someone (not staff) assisting them.
Large extended families in this area that reach across marriages to form a pretty caring population.
I cannot imagine abandoning someone in a wheelchair. Reminds me of people that dump their dog at a doorstep and drive off.
^word^…Hadn’t made up my mind yet who is the biggest POS here, the porter, the Airline, or the son. I’m with you VOV, take the lady to Security or to the Airline Office, do something, this situation ain’t rocket surgery. Be a lawsuit ‘fore it’s over, betcha, betcha! Wonder which lawer will get there FIRST. BTW, I’m still FIRST in the only FIRST that really counts, the Coveted Earned (never given) Friday Weekend Open Thread Book of First. Let’s back up a bit. The POS son should have never left his handicapped Mama at the gate until she was on the plane. I know I wouldn’t have. It’s that simple. When you are flying as a passenger there are a 100 things that can happen and 96 of those things aren’t good. A lot of us are around this lady’s age; how many of our children, if we were in her condition, would leave us like that? I’m sure that my Baby Girl wouldn’t leave her poor old wheelchair bound Papa until the plane was being pulled away from the gate. Then he should have contacted whoever is at the other end and say “Mama is on the plane,” flight #, arrival time ect, ect. I’d like to kick his ass FIRST. I hope his other family members did. (2) The airline. Well, just daayyyyuuummmnn! What the hell happened to customer service. They bought your ticket to ride your airplane, from your gate, they are YOUR customer. Take ownership, show that you care. Call the family, “Mama ain’t on the plane, we putting her in hotel so forth,” do something. Everybody in the world has a cell phone now, including me, no excuses. A real Attorney will have this family free flight tickets for the rest of Mama’s life. The POS porter. Well he just got his company sued too. Look at the video, he’ll be back in the hood selling dope this week end. This one just pissed me off. He probably woulda done his own Mama the same way. You gotta look after kids, critters, and old folks.… Read more »
I think this situation is a textbook case of a classic serial clusterfuck. There are a lot of asses in need of kicking.
Yep.
Yeah, must be the son had a very important place to be so that he couldn’t wait around til mom’s flight was called. I mean, an hour or two is such an imposition. It’s not like she carried his worthless ass around for 9 months. Leaving her on her own is understandable. I hope I don’t have to mark that with the /s.
Since I have absolutely no idea where my ex-wife is I was unable to get a passport for my then 12 yo daughter in order to drive through Canada on my move back to Alaska. Due to the fact that I had to work and we were caring for my Mother with dementia and I was working on getting her into a home that could provide the care that she needed I had to put my daughter on a plane to Alaska.
I had family lined up in Alaska to get her at the airport. When I dropped her off I sat my ass at the gate making sure she got on the plane and waited until the plane was in the air and a while after that. I then placed a call and informed the family member picking her up that she was on her way. I don’t understand why the son would just leave his mom at the gate.

Get Woke, Go Broke? DICK’S Sporting Goods Warns Investors That Decision To Get Rid Of Guns Cost Company Dearly
By Emily Zanotti
I loath the use of the word “Woke” as a tag for “morally aware or superior” when all it does it identity the user as illiterate. To read more of Dick’s woes, and there are more, go to The Daily Wire.
“I loath the use of the word “Woke” as a tag for “morally aware or superior” when all it does it identity the user as illiterate”
Same for Obamas use of “folks”
Some folks is woke some ain’t…but a lot of woke folks ain’t much in the way of contributing members of society, so the value of their “wokeness” seems limited to virtue signaling for like minded peer groups, many of whom also don’t contribute much.
Why is it that the “enlightened” motherfuckers never seem to have real jobs that pay actual taxes instead of jobs that net them other unwoke folks hard earned cash?
That’s a very good question.
Until now, I honestly did not know what the hell people were talking about when I heard all this “woke” crap. I thought it meant they had been asleep until the reporter got there. Thanks ‘Beans.
On Dick’s troubles; Bwahahahahahaha, nannie, nannie, booboo, brought it on yourself.
Ditto for ‘gifting’. Try using ‘give’.
I hate the current overuse of “curate(d)”
I have never “carefully curated my travel wardrobe “ but I have “packed my clothes.”
“curator”
Museum janitor
You gotta sell a fuck ton of yoga pants to make up for the cost of an AR and some gear to go with it…those “new” clients that Dick’s was bragging about aren’t spending the kind of dough that target shooters and hunters routinely spend in pursuit of their hobby.
It wasn’t hard to see where this would go for Dick’s. I guess the lesson is don’t be a Dick’s…
Dick’s dicked the dog on this SJW move…
I wondered how long it would take for Dick’s to become an undesirable investment.
(There are so many jokes here….)
The customers they drove away with that decision are quite unlikely to ever return even if they completely reverse their mistake. Of course, if they do return to their original sales philosophy, they well might lose the hippy dippies who they were trying to pacify. Silly people. They painted themselves into this corner. It is quite satisfying seeing them now with nothing to do but watch the paint dry.
They should start selling dildos.
Feature their own brand “Dicks Dildos”
With all the accessories.
Think of the jokes….
Me, the porter who left the woman, 10 minutes and a nightstick. That’s what I want for Christmas.
This story doesn’t say much for her relatives either, with all the cancellations I think any family worth that title would have checked to see if her flight was among those.
This was a disgusting failure of basic human decency.
A couple of weeks ago, Navy unveiled its goaty game uniform for the Dec 8 (3 pm) kickoff in Philly. It’s really sweet. Little girls will love it! Today, the Army revealed its uniform for the game. It is Black-Knight-Big-Red-One-Darth-Vader kick ass. I got puckered just looking at it. Here’s a Mil Times link to it. Talk about if looks could kill…
https://www.armytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2018/12/03/army-football-unveils-uniform-for-clash-against-navy-and-its-outstanding/
Those Navy Goat uniforms don’t inspire a lot of confidence, perhaps their skill set will prove capable of overcoming those nancy looking uniforms…
Should make for an interesting photographic contrast, all black space age uniforms against Bill The Goat uniforms…hahahahahaha
Most approby Darth Vader, pall bearer black to tote the goat casket after the execution thereof.
Lee Marvin would be proud.
Go Army! Beat Navy!
It’s Chicago. Figures.
(Sorry Ex)
Yes. Therefore, no surprise.
I used to love going to Chicago, it was such a fun city and lots of great food! Now you couldn’t pay me enough to even get near that shithole! Just shows what the D-Rats can accomplish with a free rein for years! I feel sorry for the poor fuckers that have no where else to go!!
On this date in history:
1942 – Admiral Tanaka leads 10 destroyers in a supply operation to bring food to the desperate Japanese soldiers on Guadalcanal. To avoid air attacks, the cargo is dropped not landed. Only about 300 of the 1500 containers reach the Japanese forces.
1983 – Two F-14s are fired upon off Lebanon. The next day, USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and USS Independence (CV 62) launch a strike against Syrian anti-aircraft positions. During the strike, two U.S. Navy planes, A-6E and A-7E, are shot down. In the A-6E, Lt. Mark A Lange is killed while Lt. Robert O. Goodman is captured. Goodman is released Jan. 1984.
June 20, 2014 in Iraq a young Marine and two of his buddies were killed by an IED.
I don’t know much more about the incident, but, what I do know is that that his now Gold Star Mother has been having a hard time dealing with losing one of the Twin Boys that she gave birth to a scant 20 years ago.
That being said, the Gold Star Mother is a lifelong friend of mine growing up in SE Iowa with me and attending schools from the 1’St grade on.
Since she is a lifelong friend I felt that I might be able to help her cope a little bit if I was to put something together that might ease her pain just a bit.
So, with pics from his Facebook Page and her FB page I assembled this remembrance video with the song “Compass” from Two Steps From Hell and here is the result.
Godspeed to Adam Wolff, God Bless his family and God Bless all those that we have lost in these horrific wars we seem to always find ourselves in…
Use caution when you view this one boys and girls. It gets real dusty in there.
Steve, you did a fine job on that tribute to this young Marine. Please extend our condolences for her loss and we will lift up a prayer for God’s Peace to be with her and the entire family.
Too much wasted American Blood already. Bring all of them Home.
Thank you for the kind words. All I did was assemble it.
I would like to have this placed in the wall of real Veterans.
Not for me, for Adam Wolff and his entire family.
He certainly earned it and it is only about him and his family…
Period…
Very nice tribute.
“Don’t worry. I’m coming home. I promise.”
Salute.
(Thank you for that video. It hurts to watch it, and it should hurt. A good man is gone.)
Wonder how many hours the lady spent in the wheelchair? I notice her feet do not touch the floor. So … she sat there for hours with an unnecessary strain on her back, with each hour more painful than the previous. Doubtful she even went to the bathroom for hours. As said, there is no way I would leave a relative, or even a friend there. I would have ensured they got on the plane prior to leaving the airport. Classis example of ‘it’s not my job’. Well, pal, it WAS your job the moment you began pushing her in the chair. She was your job and, more importantly, your responsibility as a human from the moment you began pushing her until she was safe and where she needed to be. It was YOUR job.
If this was your mother would you have left her this way?

We felt the Anchorage earthquake all the way up here in the Fairbanks area. I had just gotten asleep after night shift when I was awoken by my bed shaking and the hanging mirror rattling.
It didn’t disrupt the supply chain from the ports up to here. Even if it did I would have no problem since I’m prepared and could go months without going shopping, but I’d have to dip into the food storage. Same with firewood and fuel for the generator if I had to use it. I went to the store on Friday to get some soda and ended up saying to hell with it and went home after seeing the store packed with shoppers just then realizing how precarious our supply chain is.

Ahh, man. The end of an era. P-3 squadrons world-wide had to implement a NATOPS change when wing stores were carried, and Fat Boy was part of that.
Sea Story Alert!
A P-3 crew flying out for a MINEX forgot to pull a certain circuit breaker, and the stores started coming off the wings as soon as the weight-on-wheels switch triggered. The mine train landed in part on Fat Boy’s parking lot, so he called the base Duty Office and surrendered.

Well. I’ll be damned; a different “rest of the story.” Is the truth ever out there somewhere?
I wonder if the porter was a union employee who, by contract, could not do anything once his shift ended.
I am not saying I agree with it or excuses it, but I wonder if that is part of what happened here.
what I want to know is where was her family. the ones that were so worried that she was left alone? why didn’t they stay to see her off?
Not so fast on blaming AA.
