The new
Thank you for your support.
Button is up and running. Any funds that were in Jonn’s account were given to his family. I hope everyone agrees that was the correct thing to do. So, we start from scratch. I hate asking for money almost as bad a I hate posers…but it is what it is.
So, there it is.Please do not give too much, save some for food and other particulars.
Here it is again. We will probably squander it foolishly while tracking down those who bring disgrace to everything you hold dear.
It does not matter which button you click on, I don’t think you can give more than $10,000 at a time though. I suggest you come back several days in a row to compete that kind of transaction.
Jonn paid the hosting fees and legal bills current for this year. There are of course many other things we have to pay for during the year. We have and will continue to pay most of those expenses out of our own pockets. We appreciate all the support so many of you give to the cause. Please do not ever forget that participating in this community by posting is the biggest gift you can give. Without all of you, anything we do is meaningless.
We are open for suggestions about what we should give to people based on an individuals generosity. Autographed photo of TSO in the Buff? A nice picture of Hondo’s shoes? A few quarts of EX-Ph2’s gravy? Maybe the Soviet will chip in. Just let me know what we can do. We aims to please.

Fed the pig, you should start receiving monthly donations.
And thanks, but prizes are not needed.
A This Ain’t Hell t-shirt with Jonn Lilyea tribute.
So this does not appear to commercialize, do the large TAH on the back and a small Jonn Lilyea 1955-2018 in a 3×3 over the heart on the front. That would be tasteful.
Or a TAH commemorative coin.
So we can present them at a secret gathering to show we are one of the few, we band of brothers and sisters.
You might want to check on the domain name as it will expire next month. The name is registered to John V Lilyea, there is no mention as to whether he operated under an LLC or other than as a proprietor.
There may be tax implications. If so, I’m sure that John’s attorneys or accountant can provide guidance in the matter. If you, or they, need additional information you can contact me, back channel.
In the works. Thanks.
All things considered, domain registration is important but likely amounts to a relatively small amount. Something around $15 per year is normal.
If memory serves, Jonn mentioned that the bulk, around $6000 per year, of the site’s expenses go for web hosting. Past indications have been that hosting is by Go Daddy and the costs are mostly based on bandwidth use. I could be wrong.
A suggestion going forward is to look at alternatives to Go Daddy’s costs which seem relatively high. Moving a site is never trivial, but it might be worth considering as an eventual option.
Another suggestion, and this is no reflection on Jonn, is that advertising revenue streams for TAH might be better. This is an observation based on viewing the site both with and without ad blockers. Understandably, Jonn might not have wanted to deal with it much because he had other priorities.
I’m thinking that the hosting is with Tucows, at least according to whois.
Jonn had said that he got a significant discount by paying two months in advance, for the whole year, hence the July funding rally.
The fact that Tucows is the domain registrar doesn’t necessarily mean it hosts the website. According to Tucow’s own site, it’s in the business of providing bulk domain registration services to other vendors who have the data centers where sites reside.
What’s also interesting is that if you look down at the bottom of the whois, the DNS servers are listed at Yahoo! but whether that is still the actual current network routing or a remnant from the original 2006 registration and hosting is unclear.
True enough. I’ve used a whole litany of hosting services and would not go back to GoDaddy or HostGator. BlueHost has been so-so so long as you go with multi-year subscriptions.
Given the vast repertoire of content and span of years of data, switching providers could be delicate enough to consider running them in tandem before cutting the cord.
This is a great site for vets, there is seldom a week that goes by when I have not learned something new, particularly the administrative and personnel stuff. Some of these guys have a very long memory!
Not that it really matters, or is anyone’s concern, but for the curious TAH is not hosted at Tucows, or Godaddy. It is hosted at WP-engine. Before that, it was hosted at Rackspace, and before that, it was hosted on my personal server, and before that it was hosted at Yahoo Small Business, where it was and continues to be registered.
Cherie, it seems to me it actually does matter and is justifiably of some concern, however minor. If it didn’t, there wouldn’t be a need for Dave Hardin to be passing the tip jar. It’s also been apparent over time that a number of the TAH regulars have IT experience to such a level that we’re not usually talking out of our collective anal cavity about this stuff.
On the other hand, and for what it’s worth, having a discussion about the future of TAH is also not a matter of a bunch of us trying to micro-manage the famous hippie chick.
Jonn wanted TAH to survive his passing. Since TAH is also dependent on the financial support of its end users, a discussion about ways to help it survive is not unreasonable.
I wrote what I wanted to say incorrectly.. so allow me to rephrase.. As of today, as I type this, this site is Jonn’s and/his family’s. The first line of his “about page states that. I have a professional advocacy for Jonn, and in his absence, his legal heirs. I am struck by the fact that so many offer their IT support now. I’ve worked for and along side Jonn for 11 years on this site, and not once, have I ever received an offer of assistance from any of you. Would I expect one? No, the site worked fine. Just how it works right now. Am I suspicious of all the new so-called ownership and calls for change? You bet I am. Why I am suspicious? I know what goes into a site of this magnitude, and I dont use ‘magnitude’ lightly. I know the operating cost, and the AD revenue this site generated – take a look at the nifty google search- its wonderful! I know that whoever becomes the “owner” is going to be able to make a fair amount of money, with or WITHOUT any new content– in other words, the content here could sit, and it would still make money. Jonn was not dumb in any regard, least of which how to make a financially successful web site that also allows him to follow his dream(s). Personally, I believe that the paypal money for this site should all go to Jonn’s family, specifically his wife, FOREVER. I also believe that the ad revenue needs to go to Jonn’s family, specifically his wife, FOREVER. I also believe that site can continue to have fresh content without an “ownership” change: The same people post here now that posted here before Jonn’s passing – why do they require a financial interest in the site? To post? I dont buy that cost analysis, I am sorry. This is a rant, but I assure you that my loyalties are founded in what I believe Jonn would have wanted, and until I see a paper saying otherwise – that’s where I… Read more »
That’s a lot to digest. I do want to say that even the possibility of IT assistance never before arose, that I recall, so that explains why no one ever offered. I didn’t offer b/c whoever coined the term “User Error” had me in mind. As for the business side of things, this was a business under Jonn and it will remain so.Who the hell likes change, especially change caused by a beloved person’s death?
@Cherie
thank you for your dedication to the blog and the Lilyea family.
Respectfully
Cherie, I sent you an email answering some concerns, and gave you my phone number you can call anytime. (Although to be fair I go to bed at like 8 and get up at 4, so if you don’t get me tell me when to call you.)
Cherie, I can speak only for myself but find no fault in a bunch of folks being concerned about how this all plays out. Including you, of course.
We had a good thing going here and hope that it continues for a very long time. I don’t care who “owns” the place as long as the mission Jonn had continues. Will there be changes? Of course but I hope that we folks out here don’t see most of them.
I feel pretty confident that Jonn had the legal side of things set up pretty well. He understood that this is more important than individual egos and that the mission should continue even without him.
The legal part of all this will take as long as it takes to sort through. The only thing most of us can do about that is to slow it down by throwing monkey wrenches into the process. I hope and pray that none of us does that.
Rattled the cup a bit Dave. Will rattle some more when I get past some medical expenses. Expect all my pig feedings to be squandered on good Southern Burley and distilled spirits. Prizes? Hmmm; you’ve already posted a pic of Hondo’s Camel Toe, so don’t need the shoe pic. TSO in the buff may have some resale value. Ex-PH2 gravy would always be welcome, but would prefer a good ration of Her sausage with red beans and pan of cornbread. Carry on! Hand Salute. jc nsnr
Red beans and rice w/smoked sausage – look for it on Thursday this week.
Done….
Got a snail mail address?
I’m not allowed to push buttons.
Second on the snail mail address and a name to make the check out to. I don’t think putting “The Soviet” on the check will work. 🙂
Agreed. How does one send cigars to anyone through an online drop box?
Done
Yes, indeed, any $$ left in that account belongs to Jonn’s family. Mine was one of the later snail mail additions that was in there and I completely agree with them having it.
Good that this has fallen into place. Having this meeting area open for camaraderie and fellowship is great.
Threw some coins in the the hat. Keep up the good work!
Chipped in. Thanks for everything Dave.
In between paydays.
Once the bills are paid this weekend, I’ll throw you a few ducks or pigs or goats or a mule your way.
You’ll have to petition Trump for your 40 acres.
I know the Obama Program didn’t work out.
Testimony to Jonn’s infantry training: at Fortress Benning in the White Name Tape Army era we were taught in Patrolling to designate a chain of command. If the Patrol Leader got zapped, #2 took over instantly and so on all the way down to PVT Snuffy.
Jonn must have done that at TAH because you folks have done an amazing job at keeping things moving in so many ways. I’m guessing he’s very happy and trying to figure out a way of snarking Dave H. Bravo folks.
I am glad you’re here sj…I was wondering where you have been and was ready to ask just that on this coming Friday’s WOT.
Why thanks 2/17! We’ve been RVing and Bluegrass Festivaling in WV and often have little to no interwebz down in the beautiful hollers. I’ve had withdrawal and trying to catch up on what I missed.
Mrs SJ has met the Claws and knows to call them when my reserve doesn’t work and I splatter in.
Thank you Dave, I put a few bucks in the tin cup, I hope it helps, I wish I could give more! I truly appreciate all that you and TSO and Ex-PH2 and all the rest of the gang do for us everyday! You all have made a wonderful addition to my life and the cause of Stolen Valor! I will never forget what Jonn did for all of us! He was truly a great man and warrior! Thanks again for all that you do!
Question!!!
If we (I) had a monthly donation going before, will it automatically contribute to TAH in the present or should I stop an restart a new “allotment”?
The answer I got was to “Stop and Restart.”
Thanks, “an I will.”
Thanks Dave. Glad Jonn’s family was helped.
I agree. It will never make up for their loss, but hopefully it helped to bring them some comfort.
Damn, I misread the title as “Donut Button”!
And here I ordered a dozen of chocolate creamed filled.
Tossed a bit of gild into the coffers Dave, decided I didn’t really need that operation to make me taller.
Just going to hang from my “Teeter” longer and see what happens.
Thanks for the update Dave.
Tossed in some coin, and more than happy to do so.
It’s not much, but as I can I’ll add more.
I want a shirt…it should say, “Thanks, Dickweeds” with TAH logo and #proud. Pretty. Please. 🙂
That sure sounds appropriate.
Are you volunteering to handle the TAH gift shop where others could buy such a shirt????
Can we get the disqus.com widget for comments? Basically the standard for website commenting now. Much easier to get notified of replies and such.
Amen.
I don’t agree Discus would be an advantage. Switching seems like trying to fix something that’s not actually broken and could create unintended consequences. For example, current comments have a timestamp, can be linked back to, and are searchable by commenter. Using Discus for authentication might cause such features to fail for only a minor improvement, if any. You’re also dependent on doing what Discus wants to do instead of having your own control of the code base.
Also, didn’t your mom ever tell you that just because the other kids like to play in traffic is not a reason you should do the same?
TAH leadership has transitioned well. If you really are considering prizes, and not just joshing, I’ll opt out. I never expected anything when contributing. My prize came daily when visiting TAH. Roll that cost back into continuing TAH.
Thanks for the info, Dave. Will drop some coin your way next month to help keep things going.
IMHO disqus stinks. Tracks you across multiple sites, and well, that stinks.
Please explain how I can make a contribution to TAH in Jonn’s memory.
Thanks.
