Christine Lavin; guns in Oakland

| July 7, 2018

The San Fransisco Chronicle publishes an opinion piece by Christine Lavin who claims that she was an editor at the Oakland, California Tribune. Before that she claims that she was a firearms instructor in Houston, Texas. I believed her up until she told the story about how she had to protect herself from some Texas rednecks who assaulted her with their pickup truck because of her bumpersticker;

I thought the ramming was an accident. I didn’t think there was any damage. It was 2:15 a.m. and I just wanted to get home. But then, the truck sped up and rammed me harder. An exit came up, and I took it. The pickup followed me and rammed me again. I pulled over.

It dawned on me that whoever was behind me must not have liked my bumper sticker. Two guys got out of the pickup, and in the rearview mirror, I watched them marching up to my car.

I opened my glove compartment, took out my Glock 17, and flipped off the safety.

See, that’s where she lost me – there is no safety on the Glock to “flip off”. The safety is a tiny lever on the trigger that disengages when the firer squeezes the trigger. But, hey, Christine is a firearms instructor, right?

Oh, yeah, the whole point of the story is summed up in this paragraph;

President Trump started fanning the flames against the media before he even stepped into office, and I can’t help but suspect that his rhetoric might have goaded Jarrod Ramos into walking into the Gazette’s offices with a pump-action shotgun.

Yeah, Ramos had an ongoing dispute with the Gazette since the early days of the Obama Administration, but Trump pushed him over the edge. Nice stretch.

Lavin was fired from the Oakland paper in the mid-nineties because she was boinking a local city councilman, you know, one of the people she was supposed to be reporting about.

She says that the folks in Annapolis should have a gun in their desk drawer – forgetting that gun ownership is restricted in Maryland, as it is in California these days – she probably couldn’t have a gun in her desk drawer in Oakland, either. The State provides security for it’s citizens, however imperfectly.

But after the “safety flipped off” story, I don’t think I can believe anything she says.

Two rules you can live by that will never fail you;

1. 99.9% of journalists make the rest look bad

and

2. Media “gun experts” are morons.

Ret_25X

addendum:

such incidents are so rare the moonprogs have to make them up.

Doc Savage

*BREAKING NEWS!*

An un named editor from the San Francisco Scribble Post has initiated a class action suit against Glock Firearms for negligent and faulty manufacturing….the un named editor stated that every time she flipped off the safety, the magazine mysteriously falls out of the weapon, “This is clearly a defective gun, and should be banned because it places people at risk”, she stated.

Additionally, she demonstrated that when she cleared the weapon and pulled the trigger, the weapon continued to fire several time; when the weapon finally worked as she hoped, she removed the magazine to show the assembled crowd, “See? The magazine is empty, it shouldn’t have fired”….The self proclaimed Gun experts assembled by the San Francisco Scribble to investigate all scratched their heads in befuddlement and stated “We are stumped”.

Right on both counts!

IDC SARC

“there is no safety on the Glock:

LOLOLOL…no kidding, eh? That’s one of the reasons I carry Glock as both a primary and secondary weapon.

No extra BS to hang up on clothing, fail or brain fart me into a delayed response.

Fukking queef squirt needs a cunt punt.

IDC SARC

Well, there is that consideration as well. 🙂

Instinct

No, no, no… That’s what shotguns are for. Andrea Mitchell told me that you just point and they are like a reverse funnel so the spread goes everywhere. Perfect for zombie hordes!

IDC SARC

If ya want to channel your inner Michonne (don’t get all fukking Freudian)you can always go to Zombie Tools and find what you need.

Roger in Republic

A pistol is what you use to fight your way to your shotgun!

IDC SARC

You carry a shotgun? I have a 5.56 pistol I could conceivably conceal under a jacket, but it seems to me a shotgun would be a bit long on the draw. 🙂

AW1Ed

You carry a shotgun?

Maybe…
Bond Arms

jonp

that looks painful. I have one in 22mag and that’s enough. 410g/45lc is not something I care to try out

IDC SARC

Lady friend of mine carries one of those .410 Judge revolvers.

I thought about getting one just…because.

rgr769

I’ll bet you are a perfect gentleman when you are with her.

jonp

I bet Chuck Conners could do it.
I just dated myself, didn’t I?

Hack Stone

The proud but humble woman owned business that Hack Stone works for sets up recruiting booths at zombie apocalypses, Paul says it is a great place to find a motivated sales force. The only way they won’t close a sale is a shot to the head.

Garold

Zombies. Some day it will happen!

AW1Ed

Ever fire a Kahr? No safety at all, and the smoothest DAO pull this side of a Colt revolver.

jonp

I have several Kahr’s. Best DAO trigger in the business.

AW1Ed

Unlike a Glock…

5JC

Some Glocks do have manual Safeties. These are super rare after market items that some police departments (and anyone if they want to) add on to the gun for no apparent reason.

https://www.cominolli.com/product-page/msk

That said the vast overwhelming majority do not have safeties installed.

If she says she has one I say show me.

rgr769

I still doubt this stupid scrunt has ever even handled one.

jonp

I carry a SW M&P quite often with a safety because I prefer it. I certainly know the difference between that and my Kahr’s that have a DAO with no safety and I’m not an instructor.
See, this is why people turn off the MSM. People that say shit that is obviously not true to make a political point like movies that have a guy or gal rack the slide on a shotgun then show them holding a Benelli Montefeltro. Seriously?

Mick

Oh, come on now, Jonn.

— sigh —

There you go again with that darn ‘gunsplaining’ that is so annoying.

Facts don’t matter when discussing ‘guns’. Only emotions/feelings matter.

Everyone knows that.

“I pulled over”
Stupid choice but the entire story is bullshit anyway.

USMCMSgt (Ret)

Yeah, most people ram other people when they see bumper stickers they don’t like. It’s especially a problem in Texas.

/sarc/

2/17 Air Cav

The entire story is unqualified bullshit. Read it again. She gets rammed but just keeps driving b/c, she says, she vthought it was just an accident. Stop. Another vehicle hits yours and you keep driving? Next, the other vehicle speeds up and hits hers again. Um, no. But wait! There’s an exit. She takes it. She then speeds up and drives away? No. She calls police? No. She feels safer b/c she of the other traffic? No, it’s 2:15 a.m. She gets rammed a third time! She then pulls over, stops, and watches two “guys” walk to her car. Oh. With them on foot, she floors eat? No. She just watches them “marching” (get it?) up to her car. And in that desperate moment, it occurs to her that after thrice being rammed, pursued, and facing imminent personal injury, perhaps fatal, it’s all about her bumper sticker. (Roll The Jerk. “He hates these cans!”)

Mick

And of course she prevails in this fanciful perilous encounter due to her unflinching courage in the face of the imminent threat posed by the two ‘guys’ (who obligingly run away when they see her ‘gun’):

‘[…]

I opened my glove compartment, took out my Glock 17, and flipped off the safety. It was the first time it had ever come out of the glove compartment for any reason other than target practice. I rolled down the driver’s window and held the gun in front of my chest in both hands, as I’d been taught. I was the first to speak.

“May I help you gentlemen with anything?” I asked.

This was not was they had expected. They paused, then they saw the gun. I’ve not seen many men run faster since.

[…].’

IDC SARC

“May I help you gentleman?” Yeah cuz that’s what anyone would say after some assholes rammed the car 3 fukking times.

2/17 Air Cav

“I rolled down the driver’s window and held the gun in front of my chest in both hands, as I’d been taught. I was the first to speak.”

So, she never got out of her vehicle, but she did that? Did she first remove her steering wheel and dash? Am I missing something? Remember, she watched them in her rear-view mirror as they marched up to her car. I must be missing something.

IDC SARC

“I must be missing something.”

Gullibility?

2/17 Air Cav

Thanks. I’ve ordered some through Amazon Prime. Should be here Monday. Once it arrives, I’ll re-read the article and believe her.

2/17 Air Cav

Damn. I’m going to have to double that order. Lavin wrote that that the bumper sticker that caused her near-death experience read, “Anita Hill for President,” was on her car as she traveled Interstate 45 from her night job with the Houston Post. After now-Justice Thomas was nominated to the Supremes, Anita Hill claimed that she had been harassed by him. That was October 1991. Problem: Lavin wrote that she was on her way home from her night-editor job with the Houston Post when the ramming (3X) occurred. It strongly appears that had a helluva commute between two jobs, one in CA and the other in TX.

rgr769

Yes, her story is totally believable, as we all know your average Texas Redneck knows all about Anita Hill. Somehow, I doubt such a bumper sticker ever existed.

Ex-PH2

You’d better triple that order, 2/17 AirCav. I may need to borrow a pint from you.

Hack Stone

Head on over to the website of the proud but humble woman owned business that Hack works for. If you order your Gullibility by midnight tonight, you get a free red hat. Just enter the code “Spandex” when placing your order.

I just tried to “flip” the safety on my 1911A1.
OUCH!

AW1Ed

I looked all over for the safety to flip on my Kahr- seems they forgot to add one!

AW1Ed

Glock safety, unflipped. Yes, I know it’s a .380 poodle-shooter, but it’s the best pic depicting a Glock trigger I could quickly find.
Glock

Sparks

The above post is for friends of Christine Lavin, so they understand how to flip to ‘flip off’ the safety on their own Glock. Nimrods.

Sapper3307

Nimrod is not really an insult. imho

Mason

Clearly, she must have had her finger on the trigger and was applying pressure to the rear. So when she “flicked” the safety off, she was essentially half-cocked. Sounds about right.

The Other Whitey

Never much understood the “safety” that prevents the trigger from being pulled…until the trigger is pulled. But then again, my soul remains untainted by the false Austrian prophet of plastic.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

TOH; The Glock came out in the 70’S while I was working for Brink’s and the big panic talk we heard was that the weapon was made out of plastic and wouldn’t be detected going through a metal detector. I had a S&W Mod. 10, .38 bull barrel from 1970 up until right after 9/11 when we were issued S&W 4046’S, S&W .40. Had it till 2007 when I retired.

Messkit

Herr Glock designed, created, and marketed the Glock 17 to the Austrian Army in 1982. Entirely in 1982. Glock did not make any firearms, nor firearm related items, prior to the G17 being adopted by the Austrian Army.

Sparks

Glock safety is all about where your bugger hook is.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

I want nothing to do with a ‘Bugger Hook’ sounds like a real pain in the ass

Yef

That’s it. I am getting a Glock 17.
I shall convert to plastic!

The Other Whitey

Heed not the words of the false Austrian prophet, Yef, and your soul may yet be saved from damnation!

If God thought polymer was so great, he would have commanded Saint John Moses Browning to invent it!

A Proud Infidel®™️

Buy all the Tupperware Weapons you want to Yef, I’ll stick with the M1911A1 which has been used to kill Nazis, members of the Japanese Imperial Army and Communists.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Ill stick to .45 wheelguns

A Proud Infidel®™️

I pack a .357 Magnum snubnose whenever I’m not carrying my M1911A1.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

I have a late Rem95 Derringer for my backup. I barely feel it in an ankle holster.
With my .41RF handloads, it would do the job well enough at point blank.

IDC SARC

I use a Glock 43 single stack 9mm as a BUG. It’s so damn cute.

Glock 21 slim frame 45 as primary.

The Other Whitey

Sometimes I really wonder about you, IDC SARC…

IDC SARC

I also have the usual weapons available.

I carried a customized Colt Commander for years.

Diversity is strength. 🙂

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Im getting 650fps with a 134gn bullet from my 95. That combined with a .41 cal hole, makes me feel safe enough!

IDC SARC

I wasn’t criticizing at all. Everybody needs what they decide they need and can trust. 🙂

3E9

Bond Arms .45/.410 derringer to give me enough time to get to my Kimber Ultra Covert II .45. Great combination of weapons.

AW1Ed

Close- same .45/410, but a Colt Defender .45ACP for me.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I carry the XDE single stack .09MM with the thumb safety/hammer decocker. My other XDSC double stack .40 striker fired has the grip safety plus the safety in the middle of the trigger. No safety on my Robrbaugh .09, No safety on my two .38 wheel guns and standard thumb safeties on my pre “Plastic” handguns. Doing this from memory and I should look at all of them but you get the general idea. I also have two breakdown pump Gallery breakdown .22 rifles. The Ruger was one of the first to break down and start to put internal locks in the receivers and you would need a key to unlock it to fire. The other Gallery was made in Brazil by Rossi.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

On my above comment, I meant to say that Ruger was one of the first companies to breakdown (give in) to try and satisfy the anti gun crowd by installing key locks in the receivers. Any other companies that have locks installed please let us know.

Slause

The Springfield MC operator 1911 has a key lock as well. Logically, does that mean all Springfield 1911 models do? I’m not sure.

The Other Whitey

.09mm? Damn, that’s a needlegun!

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

And not a Dreyse!

A Proud Infidel®™️

I’ve thought about getting one of those Bond Arms 45/410 Derringers to keep loaded with.410 buckshot to use as a “Snake Charmer” when I go fishing!

AW1Ed

They’re spendy, but built like a bank vault. Oddly enough, the one I have is named the “Snake Slayer.” I now have three barrels for it- the .45/410, .38/.357, and .22Mag. Fun to shoot, and a real hit at the range.

David

Amazingly, roughly 150-160 grains of #7 1/2 shot occupies just about all the internal capacity of a .38 Special case, leaving just enough room for two cardboard punched wads and the appropriate powder charge. Very nice and easy snake load for a .38/.357.

SFC D

I carry a polymer 357 revolver when the 1911 is not on my hip. My concession to plastic guns. I remain a follower of Brother Browning.

The Other Whitey

I don’t get to carry often (and never concealed, thanks to Sheriff Gore’s bullshit) in the Kalifornia SSR, but my go-to choices are:

1911 (Kimber)
1911 (Springfield MilSpec)
1911 (GI)
XD .45

I may add the CZ-75 to the list once I get some more range time with it.

slause

Love my SP-01.

26Limabeans

Love my Super Blackhawk Hunter for protection while hunting.
Galco holster worn across the chest in crossdraw. Fall down or get knocked down and it is right there.

IDC SARC

I had one of those chambered in 44, years ago. Very fun, accurate and reliable.

Sparks

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE, I bought a S&W Model 29 and Model 25 in 1971, both blued with 6.5 inch barrels. They are the pride of my revolvers and are still as beautiful and fire as true as the day I first used them. Just a little big for concealed carry.

The Other Whitey

My only wheelgun is a repro Colt Army 1860 cap&ball. One of these days I hope to add some Peacemakers, maybe a few Smiths (10 & 19) as well. Revolvers are very cool, but I’m more comfortable with automatics.

My wife has a Smith & Wesson Victory Model in .38SW for her nightstand gun. Not exactly a cannon, but she handles it well and it’ll put holes in whatever you point it at.

David

Get an 1858 Remington, you will then own the two prettiest revolvers ever made.

rgr769

The great thing about the Remington 1858 New Army is you can easily change cylinders while on horseback. It is very cumbersome to do so with the 1860 Colt Army. A very handy feature for reloading when mounted at a Civil War reenactment.

desert

I carried the Mod 19 smith for all the years on the P.D. great weapon, I also used the K38 (which is the same frame and a duplicate of the 19) at the police competition shoots, made it to distinguished master, love that weapon! Oh I also had a K.22 which is also same frame for plinking or at the ranger…cheaper to shoot! 🙂

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Those are beauts of wheelguns! My main is a Webley VI with a 4″ barrel in original .455 I grew up shooting Webleys and can reload one with speeders like no ones business! All about comfort and practice.
Also, who wants to be hit with a 265gn DEWC @ 800fps 🙂

Ex-PH2

Hogwash. I’m sticking with my A&P51 which not only fires bullets, but also launches cherry bombs (with pits) and has a 2,000 yard range stare included in the kit.

Seriously, I hope she never takes up writing novels. When her plot lines are so dimwitted that she can’t create believable fake news and her facts are all hobbledehoy and can quickly and easily be slapped down, there’s no NYT best seller list on the horizon for her.

She might as well take up cooking burritos using a stolen filling receipt and stolen flatbread recipe and sell them from a truck rented from a Chinese guy in Portland. that’s how very, utterly, undeniably ridiculous she is.

If she was a ‘range instructor’, was it really a shooting range, or was it a six-burner stainless steel demo at the local Abt’s Appliances branch?

The Other Whitey

Had modern polymers existed in the early 1900s, I will guarantee you that John Browning would have investigated using them – and likely would have, at least in some of his designs. He was too damn good of an engineer to ignore anything that might have allowed him to design a better weapon.

Icarus urges you to reconsider

Mason

This whole story is blatantly and abundantly false. I expect her to have a book deal and to sell the movie rights by the end of the week.

The Other Whitey

I hate glocks. I am not shy about sharing that fact. I am also sufficiently familiar with the damn things to know this woman is lying her ass off. Bless her little leftist heart.

26Limabeans

I have never held let alone operated a Glock. I don’t even know anyone that owns one and I can tell this woman is full of shit.

AW1Ed

I don’t hate Glocks, I can hit what I aim at with them and they go ‘bang’ every time. I just prefer the ergos of other handguns.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

I want to send her a Type 92 Nambu to pack while she does yoga. Downward Facing BANG!!

The Other Whitey

See that thing on the side? Yeah, so if you squeeze that—BANG—Oh, shit, you weren’t actually supposed to squeeze it! Wow, I don’t think you’re gonna be able to walk that one off…

Mark Lauer

I want to flip her off.

OWB

Did somebody say Sig?

Perry Gaskill

Lavin is full of it. Faced with a couple of crazies who have been ramming your car at 3 A.M., “May I help you gentlemen with anything” is a question no one asked ever.

The thing to understand, for those not familiar with Bay Area news media, is that the San Francisco Chronicle editorial has almost nothing to do with guns, or Trump, or the Capital Gazette. What it’s actually doing is playing to a LGBTQBBQWTF readership wanting reassurance from a powerful woman in a powerful position to use women’s empowerment to powerfully prevail over the dark forces of the deplorables.

Tie me up, Christine. And wear that slinky teddy and the spike heels while you’re at it…

Ex-PH2

What a bimbo. What’s next? A cookbook of her own original recipes that she got off the internet from Betty Crocker?

Hey, I already have dibs on the Campbell’s recipes, cow face!!!

AW1Ed

You may have to arm wrestle Elizabeth Warren for those, Ex. Another edition of Pow Wow Chow is coming, and she may want to enter one of her “original” Cherokee recipes again.

Ex-PH2

Well, Warren can claim all the stuff she wants to, but everyone knows she can’t cook!

The Other Whitey

Didn’t you know that crab Rangoon is a traditional Cherokee delicacy?

rgr769

This stoopid media scrunt thinks everyone who reads her progtard propaganda lies is your average know nothing cretin to which they all pander. Anyone who has ever read anything about or even handled any model of Glock pistol knows they have no “safety” to “flip off.” She really needs a rhetorical and actual “flip off,” as her article is full lies and bullshit. I doubt this media whore has ever held a Glock, let alone fired one.

HMC Ret

Woman alone, 0215, rammed x3 and thinks it’s safe to pull over b/c she has a firearm. Sits in her car and watches them walk up on her car? This one doesn’t pass the sniff test. Total BS. She has no credibility.

2. “Now this ain’t no shit…”

3. “When I was the editor of the Oakland Tribune…”

A. Start of a Sea Story.

B. Beginning to a Fairy Tale.

C. Opening of a completely bullshit newspaper article.

In Cork,Ireland in 1922 5 IRA terrorists came to finish my Dad off, as he put it, after they ambushed him off his motorbike. “So I drew out my 45” Score was 3 to Valhalla, 2 did a runner and one found dead later. The other turned up in hospital. Yup true, as I saw the newspaper cutting from the time

Her story would have been more plausible (and more interesting) had she written, “These two dudes approached me from the rear of my car and I thought they must have been City Councilmen. To which I dropped my skivvies and went prone. You know a really horny Councilman has a way of banging your bumper to let you know he’s wanting to bang you.”
