If you show up at the port and request asylum, it will be granted. This is pretty much unconditional, since known cartel members have done this and had it granted.
If you try to cross illegally, and then request asylum when you get caught, it will NOT be granted. You will be treated as a criminal, and like other criminals, you will be separated from your children. It’s unfortunate if you dragged your kid along for the crime, but that’s a mess you made, not Trump or anyone else (and our treatment of the kids is hardly atrocious).
