AMA backs gun control
The Associated Press reports that the American Medical Association has stepped outside their lane and have pressed for increased gun control, ignoring the Second Amendment protections for Americans;
At its annual policymaking meeting, the nation’s largest physicians group bowed to unprecedented demands from doctor-members to take a stronger stand on gun violence — a problem the organizations says is as menacing as a lethal infectious disease.
The organization wants a ban on scary-looking black rifles and universal registration for firearms as a panacea for gun violence, you know, despite the fact that neither has ever affected gun crimes.
Many AMA members are gun owners or supporters, including a doctor from Montana who told delegates of learning to shoot at a firing range in the basement of her middle school as part of gym class. But support for banning assault weapons was overwhelming, with the measure adopted in a 446-99 vote.
“There’s a place to start and this should be it,” Dr. Jim Hinsdale, a San Jose, California, trauma surgeon, said before the vote.
The AMA resolution does offer some good points about detecting suicidal tendencies, but largely it’s the same old gun-grabbing bullshit;
While it is no longer viewed as the unified voice of American medicine, the AMA has more clout with politicians and the public than other doctor groups. It counted more than 243,000 members in 2017, up slightly for the seventh straight year. But it represents less than one-quarter of the nation’s million-plus physicians.
It’s time to deflect questions about your access to guns from your activist family doctor.

A lot of Medical students join AMSA or the AMA, because it gets you discounts on things like board testing materials.
The AMA is as representative of the medical as the ABA is of the legal community. In 35 years, I don’t think I ever met a real litigation attorney that admitted he was a member.

UFB. Firearms are not a medical issue. Why don’t they do something about the opioid crisis medical practitioners helped create?
My niece died of a drug overdose of several types prescription pills written by multiple doctors. One of her principal sources was a former national president of the American Academy of Family Practice.
Or better yet, why don’t they start a campaign to deal with the 250,000 plus deaths negligent treatment by the medical profession cause every year. Some say the real numbers exceed 300,000.
Other sources list the number at 400,000. Regardless, they should stay in their own lane.
Now they are just meddling. Not a good thing for them to do.
It would make much more sense for them to support stricter controls on doctoring since in reality docs behaving badly are responsible for far more deaths each year than are scary looking gun owners.
Or, why are they not calling for more cleanliness in hospitals? Germs there kill thousands upon thousands of people each year and may even be the leading cause of death in this country.

So if any doctor or flunkey medic was dumb enough to ask me a question like that, I would ask him/her/it ‘Are you even vaguely aware of the rising rate of violent crime in the city of Chicago, you moron?’
My last doc and I discussed this briefly. We agreed I would not practice medicine, too.
This I would expect from at least psych doctors….most all of whom we know are mentally defective to begin with. Having had contact with a few during my lifetime,i.e., dating one’s daughter years ago, to building a second story for rental property on one’s home near Vanderbilt. The latter was out of his mind, and yet diagnosing people with mental health issues. Due to the location of a window in the plans I needed his permission to make a change order requiring the width of a new window to be two inches more narrow to accommodate the casing around the frame. He went on about the issue NOT being two inches, but a matter of reducing the overall window size by 10%. Could go on for hours about the typical nonsense he created, but my point is made.
I think they should stick to just a 1950’s style add. Like, “99 out of 100 doctors recommend you don’t get shot. But if you do, see a doctor immediately.”
Anymore than that, clean up your malpractice issues that kill and maim more than guns in our country each year and then we’ll talk.
Why aren’t they more concerned about their pals in Big Pharma who are paying them to over prescribe drugs to people. How about coming down on “Doctors” who think it is ok to sell prescriptions. When I see my doc, I get asked about weapons in the house.
He gets the same answer, every time. In fact, he quotes it back to me now. It goes like this.
“Any blunt, edged, or ranged weapons that may or may not be stored in any domicile or mode of transportation owned by anyone residing in my household are stored in accordance with all local, state, and/or federal laws.”
I just lie to the flunkey that asks me that after she takes my blood pressure, etc., and tell her I don’t have any “firearms.” Lying to medicos is not against the law, and I find it easier than having the discussion with the doc if he sees I said something other than “no” to the flunkey.

If they were worried about people dying why don’t they do something about the huge expansion in drug overdose deaths due to the over prescription of opiods and benzos?
The US consumes more opiods than all of the entire rest of the world combined and the AMA says squat about that. In 2016 the number of people that died from overdose was more than 100 times the number of people who died from bullets from “assault weapons”.

Not sure what you mean. from 1999 to 2010 there was a six fold increase in opiod scripts. During the same time there was a five fold increase in deaths.

How about that. Medical eff-ups rank number three as a leading cause of death. Sounds like a bigger crisis in health concerns than firearms, which primarily are used to kill people committing suicide and criminals. Who knew?

I’m so old my family doctor was an American of Italian extraction and actually made house calls. He had a black bag and charged my mother $5 per visit to our house. Poor guy dropped deader than a doornail in his 40s while playing golf.
I joined the AMA in 1990 and the membership was down to 41% of US physicians. My membership ended in a few years when I saw their esteemed AMA Journal Editor destroy his reputation to protect “Slick Willie” Clinton .
AMA was quick to embrace “Obummercare”.
I quit long ago. Last I checked the membership was 18%. Going the way of the 8 track

None of the doctors I work with are members of the AMA.
My entire anesthesia department is a bunch of gun enthusiasts.
A lot of our Nurses, Orderlies and Techs are people of the gun also.
I’ve introduced a lot of our staff to target shooting.
There is an organization called “doctors for responsible gun ownership”
DRGO is a pro gun group that lobbies against gun bans.
