Happy birthday, Richard Overton

| May 11, 2018

Richard Overton, the oldest World War II veteran has just completed his 112th orbit of the sun. He seems to be enjoying the attention;

From Fox News last year;

Richard Overton was born May 11, 1906 in Bastrop County. When he came of age, he served in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945 as part of the all-black 1887th Engineer Aviation Battalion. After the war, he returned to Austin, and he has lived in the same home ever since.

While he has been honored by sitting presidents, governors and other global dignitaries for his distinguished service, most days he can be found sitting on his front porch proudly wearing his WWII Veteran baseball hat holding a cigar.

He gives credit to God for his longevity and continues to attend church, but he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, too.

“I’ve been smoking cigars from when I was 18 years old, I’m still a smoking them, 12 a day,” Overton joked in 2014.

Food for thought, his parents were born in the 19th Century, birth year starting with 18…

Easy-Peasy! His parents could have been born around 1857~1867.

My grandfather was the 6th child, born in 1901 (his younger sister in 1904); his father (my great-gf) was born in 1857 and his mother was born in 1867.

Back in the 1970s, I met a relative who was born in the 1880s/1890s. She was an ancient woman, white haired, and appeared to be incoherent.

I called that encounter as the “Meeting of Three Centuries”. A Woman Born in the Late 19th century meeting a boy who would see the 21st century and reach her age well into it.

Also, there were people who were born in the late 19th century who passed away early in the 21st century.

My grandmother was born in 1888 and lived almost through the Reagan administration. My father met his first great grandson before passing, and given that my oldest grandson is in his junior year in college, I hope to do at least as much.

Is the same WWII vet you showcased a couple of years back? The one who kept about 3 loaded pistols in his house?

If so, I’m glad to see he’s still healthy and smoking his cigars.

The Stranger

This man right here is what we should all aspire to be. He seems to be a humble, down to earth guy. Just wears his veteran ball cap with no embellishment and smokes a stogie. Happy birthday, sir and hopefully many more.

Think about it, he was not a kid in WWII. He was 36 and could probably got out of going. He didn’t, he served. That is one hell of a man! He deserves to sit on his porch and smoke his cigars.

I wouldn’t mind dropping by Mr. Overton’s porch to share a nice bottle of Bourbon and few celebratory cigars! There’s much to be learned form this man.

I was doing that math too. Hard to imagine living that long. When he was growing up Europe was all ruled by royalty, telephones and home electrical were just becoming common, the Model T replaced horses. To live during two world wars, the cold war, and all of that. From fabric and balsa wood planes to landing a man on the moon.

The stories he must have. I’d love to sit down and have a cigar with him.

…the Model T replaced horses. …

In the short film below, he said, “My first car was little Ford, a T-model Ford; had to get in front and crank it. You remember them …. Oh, no, you wasn’t born then, was you? No, I know you wasn’t.”

This young feller is still hummin’ along; may you have another great year, Mr. Overton!

Haha! The Overton Diet – Butter-Pecan icecream every day.

Tallywhagger

Damned cigars are going to stunt his growth!

OldSoldier54

Happy B-day, Brother!

I hope you make it to 120!!

The Other Whitey

112 years old, with a sip of whiskey and 12 stogies per day. Now that there’s a real man! Modern soyboys probably start having panic attacks when in the same zip code as Mr. Overton.

Ex-PH2

Happy Birthday, Mr. Overton, and many, many more to come!

2/17 Air Cav

What I find positively amazing is that he has had multiple bouts of pneumonia over the last couple of years. Give up the ghost? Hell no! There are so many cigars yet to be enjoyed.

Happy Birthday SIR!!!

Jay

12 cigars a day for 94 years=1128 cigars. Served in WWII in the Pacific theatre at 36-39 years old. Yeah, i’d say he’s earned the right to sit there and smoke. Wow. Much respect to this man. Happy Birthday Mr. Overton. If there was ever a man who earned the right to be called MISTER, its HIM!

OldCorpsTanker72

Jay. Work on your math.

rgr1480

Hey, tell him we all send our greetings, best wishes, and respects. Too bad we can’t hand off a box of good cigars.

OWB

Yes, please do extend greetings and thanks from the gang here at TAH! An assortment of hand shakes, gentle pats on the back, and even some hugs from the ladies would be in order. Tell him we owe him a box of cigars.

Sparks

Happy Birthday Mr. Overton! I’m so glad you are still with us. I cannot imagine all you have seen and experienced. God bless and keep you Sir.

Tony180A

Happy Birthday Sir! Tipping back an ice cold Boston Lager in your honor and wishing you many more.

Messkit

Guaranteed, on the sad day he reports to the upstairs command office, leftist assholes will claim he died of complications due to tobacco use.

I hate leftist tobacco haters.
