Samuel Oliverio; phony Vietnam veteran
Someone sent us their work on this fellow, Samuel Oliverio who claimed at a Putnam Valley, New York Town Board Meeting that he served in Vietnam for eight days, so he doesn’t consider himself to be a Vietnam veteran.
“Those who served in peacetime, as I did from 1975 to 1978. I did make the Vietnam classification, but I consider myself a Vietnam era, not a Vietnam veteran, a Vietnam era veteran, because, you know, the little bit of time that I was in country was all of eight days.”
Well, according to his records, in May, 1975, the month after US forces left Vietnam, Sam was on the Delayed Entry Program for the Air Force. He got a hardship discharge from DEP and then enlisted again a year later in the Army. So, if he was in Vietnam for eight days it was on his own dime.
I don’t know what he thinks that lying about eight days in Vietnam will get him, but it was a stupid claim. He spent 25 months in the active duty Army and five months were spent in Korea after a year or so at Hunter Army Airfield as a Military Policeman.

he is talking about giving town tax exemptions to vets and wants to make a distinction. his thoughts are that if you are a era vet you don’t deserve the tax exemption, but NYS has about 6 types of exemptions for vets, i have 3 of them. 1st is for expeditionary or campaign medal, 2nd is for cold war era & 3d is for being a disabled vet.
my feelings are if you served and the state wants to take less of your money i’m fine with that. it saves me about 2k a year. next they are gonna break down who has actual combat vs who was just in country… ass hats.

I sort of remember a two year enlistment of 2 years for infantry with a full 4 year active reserve commitment. I DEP in 5/75 for over a month but did 4 years active and did not get a NDSM.

The official end was May 7, 1975 except for the Mayaguez incident took place from May 12–15, 1975

As a Town Supervisor of PV this is a position of power and those who hold it should be held to a higher standard. This guy should step down immediately because he lied to the public and he should be embarrassed with calling himself veteran. I hope he steps down after this embarrassment to the town of Putnam Valley.
