Military Religious Freedom Foundation assaults POW/MIA table in Okinawa

| April 8, 2018

That hateful troll, Mikey Weinstein of the misnamed Military Religious Freedom Foundation has filed a complaint against U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa’s POW/MIA table that displays a Bible, according to Stars & Stripes;

The complaint — addressed to Navy Medicine West commander Rear Adm. Paul Pearigen — demands the immediate removal of the Bible from the hospital galley display, the immediate removal of accompanying written materials that describe the United States as being “founded as one nation under God,” a Japanese translation of these materials and an independent investigation into who put up the display, as well as “appropriate disciplinary measures” for those responsible.

The complainants include sailors, Marines and Department of Defense civilian employees stationed on the island, MRFF founder and president Mikey Weinstein said Friday.

I guess Mikey needs a new speedboat and his coffers are drying up.

Military Religious Freedom Foundation wants freedom FROM religion, not freedom OF religion. The 1st Amendment reads; Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof and as far as I know, Congress has not established a national religion and placing a Bible on a table doesn’t hurt anyone. It especially doesn’t hurt Mikey, since he’s in New York and the table is thousands of miles away.

Mikey should be told to pound sand.

“…as “appropriate disciplinary measures” for those responsible.”

I agree- perhaps a Flag LOC for whoever came up with the table idea.

Eat shit and bark at the moon, Mikey.

LRRP2

Where do these idiots get their funding ???

AW1Ed

Lawsuits, I imagine.

The Other Whitey

Mikey is making himself a mighty comfortable living off his “nonprofit” organization, seeing as how it rakes in seven digits a year and he’s the sole employee…

I heard he scrapes by on a paltry $300K he pays himself.

Militant atheists with more money than sense.

Probably from Soros, moveon.org, NWO etc etc ad nauseum…this p.o.s. is going to be REALLY surprised when he takes his last breath and is standing before the Almighty God he mocks!

Ret_25X

if we were to apply “appropriate disciplinary measures” for “those responsible” Mikey would be in big trouble.

Strapped to a rocket and shot to the sun trouble.

Ex-PH2

Okay, someone please tell me why an atheist (atheism is a belief system, which makes it a religion) has more rights than I do?

I find it offensive that Mikey and others of his ilk are offended. He can jam it.

A Proud Infidel®™

What’s little Mikey Whinestein gonna have for an epitaph, something like “Here lies little Mikey Whinestein, all dressed up and noplace to go”?

CA_SGt

It’s not that atheism has more rights than you do. Removing the bible doesn’t promote atheism, but instead removes the illusion that entering is being promoted at all. They could just as easily leave the bible and include a myriad of other religious texts from varying religions as to show that not single belief system is being propogated. As an atheist, myself, I think Mikey needs to pull the stick out of his ass though and stop conflating minor religious displays with the establishment clause of the Constitution. I’m not offended by the bible being there as I’m old enough to just ignore something I don’t agree with.

Right on…apparently the atheists holiday spurred him on….APRIL FOOLS DAY!

He should have complained about the violation of the U.S. Flag Act because the Flag of the United States is on the incorrect side, always on the viewer’s left facing the flag.

It is always the view from the chair.

The part about these shit birds that humors me most is how they are completely unconcerned about real problems, but get all worked up that someone they do not know might read a Bible or own a firearm or even be a straight white man.

Read Mikey’s books to learn what he’s been through. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Jon The Mechanic

Ruth, I really don’t give a shit what Mikey has been through.

Everyone has hard times, that doesn’t give a person a pass for being a dickhead.

NHSparky

Fuck that. I’m not wasting the time or putting any money in his pocket.

Frankly, if he told me water was wet, I’d still get a second opinion.

Ex-PH2

I will only read mikey’s BOOKS if he sends me a free copy. He is nothing but a self-centered, money-grubbing little turd, If you think otherwise, you have been hoodwinked. There are PLENTY of people in this world who have suffered as badly as or worse than mikey, and they don’t go around bullying people over religion, RUTHIE.

Since you DO let us know that you are uninformed of facts regarding the military’s take on religious preferences, the list of DoD-acknowledged religions is now 221. On this list, Agnostic is ZA and Atheism is ZE.

Mikey is forcing HIS religious preference on everyone else, which he has ZERO RIGHT TO DO.

Now kindly be a good little acolyte and go peddle your canned hams elsewhere. Thank you.

I wonder how many servicemen that fought on/around/over Okinawa asked the Good Lord to pull them through this ordeal, and if He could look after their valiant comrades that perished in the mighty struggle against tyranny and oppression? I wonder if they think its ‘inappropriate’ that a bible is on that table? Personally, I feel that a religious text that represents all the faiths of those who fought and died for OUR freedoms should be present.
Fuck this guy and his opinions.

Ruth Walker

There is no religious text that represents all the faiths. Get an education!

Separation of Church and State means that the Church cannot interfere with the government in matters of government. Likewise, the State cannot interfere with the church in matters of religion.

The above display doesn’t run afoul of this concept.

A Proud Infidel®™

Or that the State cannot espouse one faith over another like The Crown did with The Church of England in the Colonies.

CA_SGt

I think he’s going for a violation of the establishment clause more than separation of church and state. The presence of the Bible, out of context and absent the scriptures of any other faith, could be seen as condoning Abrahamic religions over all others. This is just devils advocacy though. As an atheist, I’m not personally offended and could care less. I’m adult enough to ignore the book of fables and focus on the importance of the display.

Ruth Walker

It’s a display representing the government. Of course it’s wrong to have religious items.

OWB

You really are that ignorant, eh? No, the display does NOT represent the government! Get a grip – it represents POW/MIA folks my generation has learned to live without.

And even if it did, so what? Your right to ignore it is in no way impeded. Personally, I’d prefer it is the tablecloth were blue, and that also doesn’t matter.

Ex-PH2

Not getting enough attention again, is he?

Someone should put a bag over Mikey’s head so that we don’t have to look at him any more.

I’m repeatedly amazed at the people who get their assless chaps in a wad over things that have nothing to do with them, never mind make a public issue of it.

AW1Ed

It’s a scam, Ex, just like the Westboro Baptist Church asshats. The only reason Mikey is interested in a bible on a table half way around the world is because, as Jonn implied, he’s getting low on funds.

Which of course makes him more despicable, if that’s even possible.

Hack Stone

So, you are saying that he is acting Bernathian? Can this asshole read a fuel gauge correctly?

What a pile of shit with lips.

CA_SGt

He isn’t told to pound sand because he’s technically in the right. I personally think he should focus on something that actually helps soldiers rather than lining his own pockets, but my feelings don’t come into play hay a bible alone, absent of any other religious texts or iconography, can be seen as a violation of the establishment clause.

desert

He ISN’T right! Freedom OF religion, that means assholes like this cannot dictate to us how to believe, or who to pray to, if he wants to believe he came from a monkey, in his case, I would have to agree with him!

Mikey depends upon little weasels–little rat weasels–to report this stuff to him. I hope they’re proud of themselves.

“The complainants include sailors, Marines and Department of Defense civilian employees stationed on the island.”

David

Would be nice sometime to have him provide a confidential list to some judge – if the list did not confirm their complaints (in confidence, of course) and contain all the named categories… throw Mikey in the hoosegow for fraud.

He always seems to forget that the Separation clause enjoins the government from establishing a state religion and says nothing about casual religious displays on government property.

2/17 Air Cav

I can never see that pic of Mikey w/o mistaking it for one of Benito.

Sparks

You know Air Cav, he does make a great Mussolini double. Thinks like Benito too.

Roger in Republic

He better be careful that he doesn’t end up like Benito. I mean, there are plenty of people who take their religion a lot more seriously than I do. I wonder if he would be so quick to condemn a display using the Koran?

A Proud Infidel®™

I say give him a one way ticket to Mecca to do so!

Ruth Walker

Of course he would! Xns who really take their religion seriously would pray in private as directed in Matthew 6.

Knowing they would not let him pass, he disguised himself in a Luftwaffe coat and helmet, hoping to slip into Austria with some German soldiers. His subterfuge proved incompetent, and he and Petacci were discovered by partisans and shot, their bodies then transported by truck to Milan, where they were hung upside down and displayed publicly for revilement by the masses.”

Weinstein seems like one of those people who go through life constantly looking for something to be unhappy about. And if his outrage, feigned or otherwise, can generate a few bucks, it’s even better. I’d also argue there are apparent flags about his relative sanity. One example is a crazed screed he wrote for the Huffington Post> a few years ago in which, among other things, he said he was fighting:

“incredibly well-funded gangs of fundamentalist Christian monsters who terrorize their fellow Americans by forcing their weaponized and twisted version of Christianity upon their helpless subordinates in our nation’s armed forces.”

The rest was more of the same, and a fairly clear sample from a guy whose likely main problem has less to do with being terrorized by gangs of monsters, and more to do with not having all his dogs barking.

I have no idea why anyone would even consider his request. It is in compliance with our Constitution, violates no laws or UCMJ Articles. Therefore, the correct response, if any would be, not your business.

But this is just another sliver under the skin of our society. Like the other slivers, it is made of thin minorities who DEMAND their cause or ilk be heard. Truth is, they want their cause rammed down America’s throat and all to bow to it. Be they asshats like Weinstein, the LGBTQWERTY bunch, transgenders for their sick proclivities or what have you. It’s time to do what you do with any thorn. Cut the damned thing out, let it heal and then cut down and burn the offended bush that caused it.

I still believe the is a majority in our nation who remains, by and large quiet. It’s time to stand and say enough is enough.

CA_SGt

Actually, Sparks, there is plenty of judicial precedence from the courts to effectively argue that the display is unconstitutional. That being said, the display hurts no one, and Weinstein needs to stop his weird crusade.

So some of the peeps stationed in Okinawa complained about the table. The Mil. Service sure has changed. I went to 3 Iwo Jima Class Ship reunions and we always set up the MIA table and Color Guard with no problem but then again, the majority of the attendees ranged from WW2 Marines that fought on Iwo up to the Viet-nam era though we had a few attendees from after Viet-Nam. Hey mikey, you are a disgrace to my Religion and if you promise not to tell anyone about my wooden Wazoo, I won’t tell anyone how you got those splinters in your mouth. Cia Benito.

Ex-PH2

Okay, okay, okay! I’ve heard all the arguments and this is my view of it.

Since there were many people who were of the Jewish faith who served in the US military during WWII, including at Okinawa, the problem can easily be resolved by including a copy of the Torah in that display.

I don’t know if there were any Buddhists in the service at that time, but there was a definite group of people of the Jewish faith.

Adding a Torah makes it equals all around and if there were other faiths represented at Okinawa, then to be fair, their religious symbols can be added by the discovery process.

Fair is fair, right?

Ex; I think this guy is an atheist from what was said in past posts. Got to go now. In the Air Force Academy, he suffered through abuse because of his Jewish heritage, but became an activist after his son was ready to drop out because of same. About half the Jews in the U.S. and half in Israel are non-religious Jews, but what is that to you? No two Christians believe the same thing either. Just because the Christian sects seldom go around killing each other over beliefs doesn’t relieve them of the long history of doing it.

HMC Ret

I’M absolutely no fan of them, but include a copy of some type of muslim propaganda and watch this cowardly little piece of shit STFU. It’s only a matter of time and we won’t hear shit from this immature fuck. I’m just biding my time, Mikey. In the interim, grow up.

Give me a 55 gallon drum of sand and I’ll ram it up his rectum all day long.
Oh, wait, he might like that. Would it be better if I pray while I do it?

OWB

Prayers on his behalf are probably our best possible reaction to his nonsense. In fact, how difficult would it be to counter each of his public appearances, law suits, or mention in the media with a petition full of folks who are praying for him? He would just love that reaction, wouldn’t he? He might eventually figure out that the way to get it to stop is for him to just sit down and shut up.

Ex-PH2

I think that OWB’s responsse – pray for Mikey’s withered, trembling little soul – is absolutely the right thing to do.

In fact, we could raise funds for good causes by marketing coffee mugs and t-shirts with ‘Pray for Mikey Whinestein’s soul’ on them.

It would help him and draw attention to his project.

2/17 Air Cav

What’s interesting is that the letter of complaint names no military member or civilian contractor. You see, if named, each would be placed in mortal fear, as the letter asserts. In other words, Mikey and his outfit are, in effect, saying, ‘Trust us. We really do have 26 people who complained to us about this display.’

OWB

So his complaint about the faith some have in the written word from “imaginary friends” they call God and Jesus is based upon the musings of imaginary friends that he calls complainants? How ironic.

Ruth Walker

If a bible were appropriate in such a display, how would one choose which version to use? Catholics started their own schools because Protestants required the King James Version to be used (not here in Iowa – our constitution is like the U.S. one and keeps religion and government separate).

Ex-PH2

Non sequitur. I have six family bible dating back to the mid-19th century. They are ALL appropriate. They also weigh about 12 pounds each.

Try harder, RUTHIE. You don’t have an argument or anything else. You are just being annoying. How much is Whinestein paying you to do his complaining for him?

Veritas Omnia Vincit

I think most of you know by now I’m a heathen infidel non-believer…..

I do however remember my Thomas Jefferson fairly well, “The rights of conscience we never submitted, we could not submit. We are answerable for them to our God. The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg. … Reason and free enquiry are the only effectual agents against error.”

As a libertarian leaning curmudgeon I like this comment as it directly agrees with my philosophy on a great many things. What you do that has no affect on me is none of my concern.

Neither I or any other atheist is injured by this bible. I recognize many folks find comfort in their grief with their God. I also recognize many of my fellow Americans believe deeply in their God. That is their right and it has no affect on my life.

It’s guys like this dickhead Weinstein that keep me from claiming to be an atheist. I’m just a simple non-believer at the moment. I’ve no desire to join any fucking clubs, especially with a pompous prick like this guy.

Worship a God or not, as long as you aren’t trying to “help” me by enacting laws reflecting your faith’s views on the world I’ve not much concern one or another what anyone else does or doesn’t do.

Weinstein should just fuck off with this nonsense.

Ex-PH2

If it weren’t for the money he thinks he can rake in, VOV, we would most likely never hear from him.

Always follow the money trail.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

You’re probably right, it’s always about money.

I just know too many smarmy, self righteous atheists who feel it’s their job to shit on a religion every day.

Of course I know a few self righteous religious folks as well who are only too happy to share their concerns for everyone else and how they should be living. Too many folks have a lot of trouble with the whole “mind your own fucking business” aspect of a free society where each of us is free to live as we wish until we injure someone or damage property. That’s a truly difficult concept for a lot of people. I am often convinced that Heinlein was right about there are basically two groups of people, one that believes they know the best way for everyone to conduct their lives and wish to control the law to make that happen and the other group that has no such desires….count me amongst the latter as one of Heinlein’s surly curmudgeons.

Brigadier General Brigadier General John Compere, Judge Advocate General's Corps, US Army (Retired)

We are a nation with a secular constitution, secular government & secular military. The military mission is to defend our nation against its enemies – not promote a religion. The secular sworn military service oath is to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States…and bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” – not to a deity, religion or scripture. The 1st Amendment prohibits the government(which includes the military) from “respecting” a religion. Military regulations prohibit the military from promoting a religion. Placing only a Christian biblical version in public displays is clearly unlawful as those doing it well know. They have no respect for our Constitution, their sworn oath, military regulations or the right of fellow military members to their own beliefs without uninvited interference. The DOD official list of recognized religions in the military currently includes 221 different belief groups. The military cannot favor 1 over the other 220.

Nope, you are simply wrong.

After you attend a military Chaplain’s school, get back to us about the meaning of the first amendment and the obligation of the military to provide for the free exercise of the various religions to individual members of the military. You obviously have little to no understanding of that obligation today.

When you were walking through Normandy, with your wife with carnations in hand; did you get all apoplectic over all of the Crosses and Stars of David marking the graves of brave Americans that gave their very lives for your freedom to be an idiot?

2/17 Air Cav

Compere is closely associated with Mikey and Mikey’s outfit and he has been making the same tired strawman arguments for several years. Rather than my abstracting and synthesizing what another man with a spectacular curriculum vitae wrote in gently kicking the general in the butt, the link to that writing is below. As for the author, Robert W. (Skip) Ash, he was commissioned out of West Point, spent 22 years in the Army, taught law, and if you want to reach him, you can do so through the Center for the Study of Law and Public Policy at Oxford where he is Senior Counsel. 2/17 Air Cav

That’s okay. You gave the short version and I gave the one with intro. Two times the fun.

Ex-PH2

Well, that was very interesting, seeing something dissected and refuted so eloquently, as well as seeing a pompous ass with a general’s rank deflated by his own petard.

The MRFF and its associates are so eager to protect their rights that they infringe the rights of others. Forcing their belief system down the throats of others violates the 1st amendment.

We swear truth on a bible Sir.

Ruth Walker

So was only the Hebrew bible in the display? The centuries of Christian Antisemitism are related to the New Testament. Mikey is Jewish and many MRFF members are Christians who don’t want someone else’s version of religion shoved down their necks. Many service members and elected officials do not swear on a bible. Directing that would be unconstitutional.

Ruth Walker

You conflate freedom of your own beliefs and opinions by pretending that it includes a right to thrust yours onto others. It does not!

OWB

Yet you seem to think it’s OK when you do exactly that. Meanwhile, exactly no, none, zero, zilch regular commenters here is demanding that their way (or lack of a way) be practiced by anyone else.

Nothing is as pitiful than the willfully ignorant. Here’s how it works: If you don’t want to believe or worship I completely support your right to do so. What I expect in return is that you allow me the same. See how easy that is?

No, probably not.

2/17 Air Cav

I own guns. I do not expect or demand that you own a gun.

I vote. I do not expect or demand that you vote.

I believe in God. I do not expect that you believe in God.

Your pomposity and narrow mindedness is laughable, Ruth.

Speaking of military regulations, I thought there was a reg about using your military title in connection with a business and/or charity, and/or whatever WHINESTEIN calls his endeavour.

BTW, the BGEN’s “title” there is pretty long winded. It reads like a line from SoMeOnE tHaT wE Know that has to give their military history as their their intro.

And how much does Mikey pay you to regurgitate his vitriol, General? Did you ever say anything while you were on active duty/in uniform?

Though so…

A basic legal premise here is that if Mikey and his organization are not military members, or acting directly on the behalf of aggrieved atheist military members, they have no cause of action. The establishment of religion clause really never took some lawyers in black robes to define it for us. When the plain language of a legal provision is just that, plain language, no interpretation is needed or should be worked. The establishment clause prohibits the government from enacting any law respecting an establishment of religion. Thus, a law that declared Islam our national religion would clearly be prohibited. So, too, would any law that effectively established a state religion while avoiding the formal declaration of establishment. And that’s it. Prayer time in public schools is banned, although for most of our history it hadn’t been. Why? Because prayer time neither established a religion nor required students to pray to a particular deity. It was that group of lawyers in black robes who twisted and turned the establishment clause to take it to the ludicrous stage. Today, I would guess that many public school teachers question whether they can wear a cross or a Star or David. A bible on a teacher’s desk? No way! A religious-themed play at Christmastime or a small manger? Outlandish!
