Military Religious Freedom Foundation assaults POW/MIA table in Okinawa
That hateful troll, Mikey Weinstein of the misnamed Military Religious Freedom Foundation has filed a complaint against U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa’s POW/MIA table that displays a Bible, according to Stars & Stripes;
The complaint — addressed to Navy Medicine West commander Rear Adm. Paul Pearigen — demands the immediate removal of the Bible from the hospital galley display, the immediate removal of accompanying written materials that describe the United States as being “founded as one nation under God,” a Japanese translation of these materials and an independent investigation into who put up the display, as well as “appropriate disciplinary measures” for those responsible.
The complainants include sailors, Marines and Department of Defense civilian employees stationed on the island, MRFF founder and president Mikey Weinstein said Friday.
I guess Mikey needs a new speedboat and his coffers are drying up.
Military Religious Freedom Foundation wants freedom FROM religion, not freedom OF religion. The 1st Amendment reads; Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof and as far as I know, Congress has not established a national religion and placing a Bible on a table doesn’t hurt anyone. It especially doesn’t hurt Mikey, since he’s in New York and the table is thousands of miles away.

It’s not that atheism has more rights than you do. Removing the bible doesn’t promote atheism, but instead removes the illusion that entering is being promoted at all. They could just as easily leave the bible and include a myriad of other religious texts from varying religions as to show that not single belief system is being propogated. As an atheist, myself, I think Mikey needs to pull the stick out of his ass though and stop conflating minor religious displays with the establishment clause of the Constitution. I’m not offended by the bible being there as I’m old enough to just ignore something I don’t agree with.

That table has been up in the Dining Facility for YEARS (in the old facility) and is taken care of by the CS’ that run it. Very humbling to go in and see it as you get ready for lunch or dinner.

Separation of Church and State means that the Church cannot interfere with the government in matters of government. Likewise, the State cannot interfere with the church in matters of religion.
The above display doesn’t run afoul of this concept.
Or that the State cannot espouse one faith over another like The Crown did with The Church of England in the Colonies.
I think he’s going for a violation of the establishment clause more than separation of church and state. The presence of the Bible, out of context and absent the scriptures of any other faith, could be seen as condoning Abrahamic religions over all others. This is just devils advocacy though. So some of the peeps stationed in Okinawa complained about the table. The Mil. Service sure has changed. I went to 3 Iwo Jima Class Ship reunions and we always set up the MIA table and Color Guard with no problem but then again, the majority of the attendees ranged from WW2 Marines that fought on Iwo up to the Viet-nam era though we had a few attendees from after Viet-Nam. Since there were many people who were of the Jewish faith who served in the US military during WWII, including at Okinawa, the problem can easily be resolved by including a copy of the Torah in that display.
I don’t know if there were any Buddhists in the service at that time, but there was a definite group of people of the Jewish faith.
Adding a Torah makes it equals all around and if there were other faiths represented at Okinawa, then to be fair, their religious symbols can be added by the discovery process.

Prayers on his behalf are probably our best possible reaction to his nonsense. In fact, how difficult would it be to counter each of his public appearances, law suits, or mention in the media with a petition full of folks who are praying for him? He would just love that reaction, wouldn’t he? He might eventually figure out that the way to get it to stop is for him to just sit down and shut up.

What’s interesting is that the letter of complaint names no military member or civilian contractor. You see, if named, each would be placed in mortal fear, as the letter asserts. In other words, Mikey and his outfit are, in effect, saying, ‘Trust us. We really do have 26 people who complained to us about this display.’
So his complaint about the faith some have in the written word from “imaginary friends” they call God and Jesus is based upon the musings of imaginary friends that he calls complainants? How ironic.
If a bible were appropriate in such a display, how would one choose which version to use? Catholics started their own schools because Protestants required the King James Version to be used (not here in Iowa – our constitution is like the U.S. one and keeps religion and government separate).

We are a nation with a secular constitution, secular government & secular military. The military mission is to defend our nation against its enemies – not promote a religion. The secular sworn military service oath is to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States…and bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” – not to a deity, religion or scripture. The 1st Amendment prohibits the government(which includes the military) from “respecting” a religion. Military regulations prohibit the military from promoting a religion. Placing only a Christian biblical version in public displays is clearly unlawful as those doing it well know. They have no respect for our Constitution, their sworn oath, military regulations or the right of fellow military members to their own beliefs without uninvited interference. The DOD official list of recognized religions in the military currently includes 221 different belief groups. The military cannot favor 1 over the other 220.

A basic legal premise here is that if Mikey and his organization are not military members, or acting directly on the behalf of aggrieved atheist military members, they have no cause of action. They are in no way harmed by this, and unless they can demonstrate they have been harmed by it, they have no status to bitch about it that anyone is obliged to pay any attention to.

The establishment of religion clause really never took some lawyers in black robes to define it for us. When the plain language of a legal provision is just that, plain language, no interpretation is needed or should be worked. The establishment clause prohibits the government from enacting any law respecting an establishment of religion. Thus, a law that declared Islam our national religion would clearly be prohibited. So, too, would any law that effectively established a state religion while avoiding the formal declaration of establishment. And that’s it. Prayer time in public schools is banned, although for most of our history it hadn’t been. Why? Because prayer time neither established a religion nor required students to pray to a particular deity. It was that group of lawyers in black robes who twisted and turned the establishment clause to take it to the ludicrous stage. Today, I would guess that many public school teachers question whether they can wear a cross or a Star or David. A bible on a teacher’s desk? No way! A religious-themed play at Christmastime or a small manger? Outlandish! I have no doubt that somewhere someone complained about a teacher’s car bearing a bumper sticker that read, “Pray the Rosary.” It’s insanity, and it’s state-mandated insanity.
Proof that the handful of lawyers in black robes is frequently wrong comes to us from conflicting and contrary decisions issued by Circuit Courts of Appeal going to the same subject matter. And what is the remedy for resolution of these conflicts? Why, the issue goes to other lawyers in black robes, whose decision is rarely unanimous. In other words, even that small group of nine can’t decide as one what the constitutionally correct answer is. Worse, sometimes a majority of those nine lawyers declares that the majority of a prior group of nine lawyers was wrong and reverses them.
