Arthur Jones, the Illinois Nazi
Someone sent us the above picture of Arthur Jones speaking at a Neo-Nazi rally. If you don’t know who Arthur Jones is, he ran unopposed for the Republican primary slot for Illinois Third Congressional District and he has been shunned by the Republican Party, according to the New York Times.
We noticed the Combat Infantryman Badge in the top picture and wondered about his military service. It turns out that he isn’t lying, as much as we’d hoped he was being untruthful. He was in the Army for five years, two years of active duty service, including 12 months in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division from October 1969 – September 1970.
“Arthur Jones is not a real Republican — he is a Nazi whose disgusting, bigoted views have no place in our nation’s discourse,” Tim Schneider, the Illinois Republican Party chairman, said in a statement. He said the party had urged voters “to skip over his name when they go to the polls” and moving forward planned on “vehemently opposing Jones with real campaign dollars.”
It’s not likely that Jones will win any election, especially as a Republican in the Chicago District, not to mention his ties to Illinois Nazis.

Same here. Freedom of speech includes speech one finds disgusting or hateful, provided it doesn’t actually incite violence. And freedom of assembly allows bigoted idiots to congregate as well as sane people. Allow the government to regulate either, and we’ll have “hate speech” and “unlawful groups” laws based on the politics du jour pronto.
No thanks. Freedom is often messy and chaotic, but it beats the hell out of any alternative I can imagine.
I am with that Hondo. The most malodorous views need not be be given an audience but the speaker, in our unique system, can bellow them out all he wants. And that is why prosecuting so-called hate crimes when the evidence is speech is abhorrent and, in essence, anti-American.
Speech which we do not like is what tests our resolve to protect it. It’s easy when we agree with the speech. Things like what this fellow spews is difficult to tolerate, but still protected.
What too many do not understand is the principle that while you are free to speak, nobody is required to listen.

Have long said that when you get to the extremes on the political continuum that the line wraps around and joins behind the line – that point is the land of serious crazy and loony tunes. This idiot was in the 4th Inf Div in the Viet of the Nam almost the exact same time I was there. I was with Company A, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry (Cacti Blue) Oct. 1969- Oct. 1970.

When I first looked at his assignments page, I thought he was in my company in the 4th ID, but then I saw he was in 1st Bn, whereas I was in Co.C,3rd Bn/12th Infantry. We had some racists in my battalion–black racists. They were assigned to HHC,3/12th, awaiting court martial or other disciplinary actions, mostly for refusal to deploy to the field with their assigned units. There was a whole barracks full of them in the Division base camp in An Khe.
Skyjumper, I was with the 4th ID from June 1970 until December 8, 1970 when the Division was deactivated. My company was the last US infantry company to leave An Khe base camp.
Just as a side note, the 12th was the only Infantry Regiment to deploy five full Battalions to Viet Nam.
I didn’t know that. I think we only had the 1st and 3rd battalions in the 4th ID. I earned my CIB in C Co, 3/12th.

If someone needs another to validate that their life matters, I believe the answer lies in the question. Don’t look to me for your validation. My life matters b/c I say it does, based on my contribution to the well being of others and the country. If you have done nothing for others, your country or yourself, well, maybe your life isn’t worth shit.
Maybe that’s the validation that they seek, that their lives haven’t been ‘worth shit’, which ultimately is a them-problem. Acknowledgment of someone’s pain doesn’t have any practical use other than maybe, just maybe, humanizing(?) the one in pain.
