Maverick Flies Again!

| March 9, 2018

top gun

Tom Cruise has signed on to reprise his role as Maverick in a sequel to the iconic 1980s movie Top Gun, due to start filming this year. Looks like he’s flying an F-35 this time, so no NFO to back him up. The big question is, can this possibly be as bad a flick as the original? Here’s the trailer, so decide for yourself.

You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling’, Mick.

Tom Cruise is the worst actor alive. He’s also the actor most often miscast in movies. How he still works in the business is beyond me. I’ve never been able to watch any of his dumpster fires completely.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Top Gun was the most fantabulous military movie ever produced.

My proof lies in the famous volley ball scene that captures the true grit and bonds of the then cold warrior spirit.

The Old Maj

Lies, you loved the locker room scenes that were not gay at all.

Hayabusa

I liked him in “Collateral”. The character he played was a colossal asshole, so I guess it didn’t involve much acting on his part.

2/17 Air Cav

His claim to fame among homosexuals and prepubescent girls was an underwear dance in some movie years ago. How old is he now, 60-61? He’s not the man he used to be. Come to think of it, he never was the man he used to be. (Those last two lines are from a Don Adams comedy routine, paraphrased.)

Perry Gaskill

Dunno, 2/17. Remembering only Cruise bouncing on the couch in his underpants sort of misses the point of the rest of Risky Business. Personally, I thought it was a good film. Not only was Rebecca De Mornay hot and Joe Pantoliano cheerfully sleazy, but it also had a good storyline which would be partly emulated later with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Home Alone.

There was also some good dialogue. One example was Cruise’s buddy Miles saying, “Sometimes you just have to say what the fuck.”

Another was the scene in the auto repair waiting room after Cruise dumped his dad’s Porsche into the lake. The service manager comes in, looks around, and asks, “Who’s the U-Boat commander?”

Casey

Agreed. He did good there.

That, and Tropic Thunder. Didn’t even recognize him in that one until I saw the credits.

The Other Whitey

He was just about perfect for his role as Les Grossman in “Tropic Thunder.” Otherwise, I agree completely.

NHSparky

I wonder if anyone in Hollywood would ever dare walk up to him and go, “No, seriously. A nutless monkey could do your job.”

I’d pay to see that. Anything else out of that cesspool? Pass.

Mason

Agree. Tropic Thunder he was excellent.

The rest of the time he just plays the same character. Over and over again.

Ex-PH2

Top Gun 2, huh? So he doesn’t have anything to do, and he’s trying to pull back, regroup and try to strike again, with an audience of (supposedly) drooling 24-year-olds.

Okay, moving on.

HMCS(FMF) ret

Remember this shitstorm he started back in 2013?

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/cruise-compares-working-movie-set-serving-tour-afghanistan-report-article-1.1511177

FUCK. HIM.

Plus – I looked better in Summer Whites/Chokers that he did!

FatCircles0311

That’s a pretty strong opinion from a guy that literally just posted a fake movie trailer.

Sometimes I wonder about you, John.

Show us on the doll where Tom Cruise touched you?

FatCircles0311

oops, it was a guest post.

Still my comment mostly stands.

Johnq

DUDE! He was the absolute SHIT in Tropic Thunder…

13B/92S/42R

He was such a little prick in the movie Taps .. with his red beret

Mark RM1 USN ret

Rumors say he swallows.

madconductor

It looks as cheesy as the first one. Cruise needs to stick to the spy stuff.

2/17 Air Cav

The problem is that fans of spy thrillers say, “He needs to stick to the jet-flying stuff.”

David

Dunno, really liked Edge of Tomorrow….Cruise gets killed like 40 times and Emily Blunt is smokin’ as always.

Lurker Curt

Shit yeah, that was good stuff! Watching his ass get smoked, watching her smoking ass…

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

OMG. I just watched the trailer and I am devastated, in looked liked a basement production done on a Tandy TRS-80.

Hayabusa

If the trailer is any indication, the movie appears to be atrocious on all levels.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

At least they used the Color TRS-80 the “Hot CoCo” as it were…

SSG Kane

Pretty sure, that’s just a slick spoof…

Or is the joke on me because I play the straightman.

Just An Old Dog

Since Top Gun was 32 years ago and Maverick would have had to been serving at least 3 years to be a Qualified Tomcat pilot at that level he would be retired by now, or flying a desk as a 3 star Admiral.

Claw

But it looks like Maverick changed services and only vaulted up to LTC in the Marines in those 32 years.

Don’t our sister services have an Up or Out policy like the Army?/smile

Not to mention still being able to pass the flight physical in his late fifties.

USAFRetired

Forget the up or out policies, there are statutory limits under DOPMA that a Lt Col would run afoul.

AZtoVA

Unless he resigned his commission while he ran off to race cars. The clock wouldn’t start ticking again until he regained a commission.

AZtoVA

A LtCol in the USMC is at least equal to a 3-Star in any of the other Services….

26Limabeans

I always confuse him with Stephanopoulos.

2/17 Air Cav

Stephanopoulos HAS to be taller.

The Other Whitey

Ever hear about Cruise’s bitch session when he made that retarded antihistorical samurai movie? He was reportedly quite butthurt over the fact that even in Japan he was *still* the shortest sonofabitch in sight.

rgr1480

Here is a very good article about the historicity of the movie: …To be fair, some of the background to the story is reasonably true to life. Japan in the 1870s was in the throes of industrialization and radical social and political changes, the process we used to lump together as “modernization.” There were samurai who objected to the changes that directly affected themselves, some of whom took up arms in rebellion (more about that below). There was even a plot to assassinate the historical analogue of Katsumoto (though it certainly did not involve a corps of crossbow-wielding ninja). Westerners in 1876 generally considered the Japanese to be an uncivilized people, inferior to Caucasians in culture, intelligence and character. The Japanese government did pay extravagant salaries to foreign experts in fields ranging from history and law to military technology and technique who could teach Japanese to be experts in those fields. Most of those Westerners spent a few years in Japan and then returned to their homelands…. https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/2746 The British were contracted in the late 1860s by some of the southern Japanese clans to teach them how to “navy”; after the Meiji Restoration in 1869, the contract was picked up by the new government. Most of Japanese naval tactics, etc., is based on the English model. French Officers and NCOs taught military tactics to the army of “The Last Shogun”; this contract also carried over into the “new army” of the Meiji Restoration and continued even after the French lost the Franco-Prussian war in 1871. Minister of War General (later Prime Minister) Yamagata Aritomo pushed to replace the French with Germans, but the Japanese General Staff — like all organizations — distained “change”, and resisted German advisors until 1885. The Japanese General Staff was then modeled after the German General Staff. Hmmm … there was also the Civil War naval veteran Henry Walton Grinnell who became a Rear Admiral and Inspector-General in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He served at the battle of the Yalu River in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95 and was discharged as an admiral at the end… Read more »

The Other Whitey

I laughed my ass off at the “good swords vs. bad guns” bullshit. Yeah, the Battle of Shiroyama really did end with outnumbered samurai rebels under Saigo charging Yamagata’s line, but the rebels only charged with swords because they had run out of ammo for their own modern small arms and artillery.

rgr1480

I believe it was also raining and the many of the rebels still used matchlock rifles.

Ex-PH2

Are you saying they’re both shorter than I am?

OlafTheTanker

Come on guys, he was brilliant as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder, best role to date.

He should stick to comedy, since he’s so laughable.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

True, Tropic Thunder 2nd best mil movie ever made. Top Gun was 1st.

Ex-PH2

With all due respect, Master Chief, the finest military movie ever made was ‘Victory At Sea’. Period.

Hondo

Submariners might give that honor to Das Boot, Ex-PH2. Even for an Army guy, that was a helluva good film.

If you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend watching the German language version with subtitles. Just seems better.

NHSparky

Yup.

That and Down Periscope are the only two submarine movies I’ve ever seen worth a damn.

Heidi

Das Boot is epic, and yes in German it is awesome

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Heidi; I saw the U-Boot pens when we visited Liberty port La Pallice France back in 1964 after op Steel Pike. The flick was filmed there and Miniature U-Boots were used in the scenes where you just saw the boat out in the water. I have the Directors cut DVD. I was also a member of Shark hunters before I moved down to Florida. Members were from different countries and had a lot of members that served on the U-Boots. Herbert Werner the author of Iron Coffins lived north of me up in Vero Beach and he passed away maybe two years ago.

Fyrfighter

Yup, Das Boot is at the top of the list, and I’d have to add “To Hell and Back”.. if for no other reason than the awesomeness of the true story…

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Fyrfighter; I don’t know how they survived with the bilges loaded to the gills with Diesel fuel to get them to the States, un insulated bulkheads, moldy chow etc. How about the out side rail mounted toilet seat to take a dump while underway. they still make the 4711 cologne that were issued to the crews but a lot of it were given to there girl friends, Moms etc. I see it in the Vermont Country Store catalogue and I tried it many years ago after I bought a bottle from my local drug store.

SFC D

4711 is still a hot seller in Germany, wore it for a while myself.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I forgot to add this to my Das Boot post up above. The real PR Officer/Photographer on the Boat was a member of the Nazi party which Kriegsmarine Sailors were not. He was an advisor to the movie being filmed and was disliked by most of the U-Boot vets to this day because of some shit that he pulled which I don’t remember. The Boot was actually out of commission with no one on board when Aircraft attacked the pens.

Fjardeson

Yes, in German with subtitles. My #1 war movie.

I actually did trek the Kokoda trail back in 2005. PNG is great for war remnant s. Downed Zeros a plenty!

Bill Cook

If they don’t put “Bozo” in the movie, it is a no go for me.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

No one watches military films for their attention to detail do they?

Most military films are full of falsehoods, we watch because some parts are sometimes accurate in how closely we end up caring about those we serve with. We watch to remind ourselves we were young and strong and the world lay before us to be taken as we chose at the time.

We watch to remember what we loved about serving, and maybe what we hated about serving.

But mostly we watch to be entertained, I no longer care about movies with deep moral messages or lengthy diatribes against modern man and his love affair with technology and absence of morality. I watch because I think it will be a fun diversion for a couple of hours.

To be honest I don’t watch much anymore, but when I do I’m looking for some bubble gum for my brain and not much else from the experience. An hour or two to just let my brain shift out of gear and idle.

Tom Cruise may indeed be the shortest, shittiest actor we have today…but his movies are like cartoons, unrealistic and funny (perhaps not intentionally so but funny as fuck nonetheless)…so I’ll probably go see this and laugh my ass off inappropriately throughout the whole movie and thoroughly enjoy the experience.

Twist

I tried to watch “Hurt Locker”, but it ended up being the only movie that I have ever watched that I couldn’t gut out until the end. The only thing they got right was the scenery. I know they had to spice it up because a realistic EOD movie would just show an Infantry Platoon waiting 5 hours for them to arrive, but that movie went full potato.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Yeah you’re right about that one I don’t think there’s a single scene with an element of reality in it…which makes it perfect for beers and laughter in a group setting…but sucks ass watching alone.

Graybeard

IMHO, this is just more evidence (as if the facts had not been substantiated adequately enough) that Hollyweird has run out of ideas, has lost all creativity, and is artistically bankrupt. (Its moral bankruptcy has been long established.)

All they know how to do is make a re-run or sequel/prequel of someone else’s work.

They are no longer artists – they are hacks.

Ex-PH2

Yes, Graybeard, but that’s the reason they are using comic books to make movies. There is plenty of good lit, sci-fi and otherwise, available that can be made in to movies, but that would be too hard, and there’s no guarantee on a return of investment. So they go to comic books.
Hollywood hasn’t had an original idea since before ‘Alien’ hit the screen.

Dinotanker

Ex-PH2,

I think it would be cool if they (the Hollywood they” were to get their stuff in a stack and make a movie based on “The Old Man’s War” by John Scalzi.

That might be fun. If it wasn’t yucked fup in the translation from Book to movie..

David

Excellent couple of books.

Casey

They never were artists. They were entertainers who thought they were artists.

Hollywood hasn’t run out of ideas, but mainstream movies have become so expensive the big studios have become risk-averse. At least with a sequel or something based on a book (or comic) you have some record of previous performance (sales) of the property.

Ex-PH2

I think I’ll pull out “Wings 1924” and watch that. And maybe ‘The Blue Max’. And then there’s ‘Gladiator’, if you want some action, and ‘300’, if you want some action, and – well, there’s ‘Aliens’, if you want some action, and besides, Apone is played by a real Marine.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Watch ‘Aces High’ with Malcolm McDowell. 1979 I believe.A wonderful WW1 flyer movie.
Anyone looking for a good ‘nam movie from the Aussie POV, try ‘The Odd Angry Shot’

Claw

“good ‘nam movie”

I think not, especially when Aussie SAS troops in 1967/68 are pictured using weapons that were still in the R&D phase during that time and didn’t even go into full production for US troops to use until 1969./smile

David

Picky, picky…next you’ll be picking on all the classic Westerns placed in the Civil War with everyone packing 1873 Winchesters and Colts, or Raiders of the Lost Arc with all the Nazis packing MP40s in the mid ’30s.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Or…..Indy with the RPG 2 LOL
Or.. Lee Metfords and Webley’s in Zulu

The Other Whitey

“Zulu” actually had enough Martini-Henrys for the whole cast, but ran out of blanks for them during production, so they did the volley-fire scenes with bolt guns.

They also used WWI-era Webleys because they couldn’t get their hands on enough Beaumont-Adams revolvers to equip the cast.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

.450/577 is a bit of a PITA to reload, and components are quite $$. No doubt all oringinal .450/577 cartridges were unuseable by the time Zulu was made.

11B-Mailclerk

Hollyweird uses the “five in one” blank for westerns.

It is approximately the shape of a loaded .38-40 cartridge, and will cycle trough the action of / fire in most period guns that used a rimmed cartridge of .40 caliber or greater.

Clever idea.

Dinotanker

WHAT! How did I miss that! They were still using Martini-Henry’s! What were the pistols? I thought the Royal Army had always used Webley revolers… In some huge calibers if I remember right.

There is a scene in the latest version of Last of the Mohicans, where you see some grenadiers or highlanders in the background forming up, I didn’t see a fixed bayonet at all…Picky bastard aren’t I?? 🙂

The Other Whitey

See above for Webleys standing in for cap&ball Beaumont-Adams wheelguns.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

They were long cartridge converted to .450 Adams by time of the Zulu war.

Dinotanker

Thanks RCAF! I will do some digging. 🙂

“The odd angry shot” is another excellent aussie war movie set in Vietnam.

Dinotanker

Im with you on the not too wild about Navy movies 2/17, but Master and Commander was very good, even it was a mish mash of a whole bunch of Patrick O’Brien’s books about Aubrey and Maturin. 🙂

I was thinking that The Cruel Sea was a great movie about how much convoy duty must have totally sucked ass. Another book that would make a great movie would be “HMS Ulysses” by Alistar McClain.

We tankers have to reluctantly remember that a whole bunch of the first Treadheads were a bunch of squids… 🙂

Hey, I LOVE “Top Gun”… the initial scene of the Tomcat on the catapult requires full volume and shakes the house. Of course, I turn the movie off as soon as Kenny Loggins starts to sing.

Didn’t that look like the 35 was taking off with the canopy open?

FuzeVT

Yes, I noticed that, too!

Atkron

Part of any good initiation was to take a new guy behind the Jet Blast Deflector (JBD) when a Tomcat was at Stage 5 Afterburner…and watch him roast.

The trick was to turn your back into the heat, turtle your head into your floatcoat, and hold your breath.

The new guy would come away with a nice 1st degree burn on their neck or face, and far less eyebrows and eyelashes.

Good Times…and yes, I was initiated.

Ex-PH2

Did anyone ever get even with you rotten basterds by making you think he’d been blown off the flight deck by jet blast? And then turns up later at chow time?

In the spirit of my namesake, I don’t care a wit about Hollywood or actors.

I am passionate about military aircraft.

And say what you will, sadly, “Top Gun” was one of the last big flying movies with mostly REAL airplanes flying.

Everything since has been all computer CGI and mock ups.

Combat Historian

If it’s about “big flying movies with mostly REAL airplanes flying,” I would rather prefer to watch the original “Iron Eagle”. You get to watch Israeli F16s pretending to be American jets beating up on Israeli Kfirs pretending to be mozzie MIG-23s, all without the silly melodrama of Maverick and Goose and the lady instructor and in-air redemption and everything else…

Atkron

Iron Eagle sucked more…The jets were cool, but that movies was awful.

Combat Historian

Yes, the movie was awful, BUT THE JETS WERE COOL!!!

Slick Goodlin

Forgot to mention:

Recent movie,”Dunkirk”,used interesting flying movie technique.

Had actors in flying sequences filmed while flying in cockpit of real 2 seater Spitfires.

sorry guys, it’s a joke trailer that was originally posted back in 2015, here is the link for the original, check the post date

I am a member of a Facebook Group for Roof Rats, people that worked the Flight Deck.

Every time this movie is brought up, the guys that were there during filming always talk about how big of a douche nozzle Tom Cruise was.

-He hid out in his Stateroom, and wouldn’t bring himself to associate in any way with the crew.

-In Contrast, the dude that played Slider and Val Kilmer would go hang out on the messdecks and hang out with the crew…Slider actually got kicked off the ship for having a bottle of booze and partying.

-Cruise cried over not having patches on his jacket, so the PR’s sewed all kinds of outrageous patches on his jacket, including the Seabee.

So the general consensus among US Roof Rats is…Cruise is a turd.

Mick

He’s also got a 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing patch on that stupid-ass leather flight jacket of his.

Not cool.

Trent

God, help us all!

They filmed parts of Top Gun aboard the USS Ranger, as the Enterprise was out to see. What a colossal fuckstick Cruise was when he was aboard.

Every pilot we had on board began acting like Iceman, mirrored Raybans and haircuts. Officers in dress white uniforms were all over the San Diego area every weekend.

Arby

Movie came out in 86, main character was a Lt. So, figure 6 to 8 years already in. using 6 years, that would make them 82 year group. That’s 36 years ago. Maverick is no longer flying and he would have to be a flag officer to have been in that long.

Arby

Oops. Got my math wrong and confused it with my year group. Makes it at least 80 for the year group and 38 for time in service.

STGCS Ret

San Diego in 86 every 18 year old E-2 had a Ninja, Leather Flight Jacket, Cruise haircut, and mirrored Ray Ban’s it was pathetic. The motorcycles would line the street outside the ASW base because they either didn’t have insurance or completed the motorcycle safety course. I did see the movie when it came out in Chula Vista and it got a standing ovation. Still my favorite movie of all time. It just has too many memories.
