William Hume Harrison; phony Beirut bombing survivor
Our partners at Military Phonies share their work on this fellow, William Hume Harrison who claims in social media discussions to have been a survivor of the Sunday, October 23, 1983 bombing of the US Multi-National Force barracks in Beirut, Lebanon as a member of the 1st/8th Marines of the 24th MAU. He also claims seven years of service in the US Marine Corps;
He was indeed in the Marine Corps, but he enlisted months after the Beirut bombing;
Private Harrison joined the Marine Corps on May 29, 1984. His Recruit training was held at Parris Island SC. His graduation date was Sep. 19, 1984.
He went from there to Marine Corps Base(MCB) Camp Lejeune NC. for training to become a Motor Vehicle Operator. MOS 3531.
Pvt Harrison was transferred to Camp Pendleton CA on Jan. 10, 1985 where he was assigned to the 1st Battalion 11th Marines as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He was later temporary assigned to the 1st Battalion 9th Marines with the same MOS.
Pvt Harrison was discharged from Marine Corps on Nov. 3, 1986 as a Pvt. E-1.

Not just Marines, CH. I was awarded an Expeditionary Medal for flying in support of USS New Jersey, which was busy tossing Volkswagen sized shells into Lebanon at the time. The barracks bombing hit us all very hard.

I was at Lowry AFB as a Marine during the attack on 10/23 going to my A school. We tried to transfer to the 0300 MOS in mass when we heard about the bombing and got our asses chewed but good.
I met some older rotor heads in Japan who where on the Iwo Jima when the Jersey barked. They told me it rocked the ship and scared the shit out of every Marine on board!!

What a POS! How many guys claim to have survived that attack? The number has to be in the thousand by now. I was born in ’65 and that was too early to be in Beirut, so born in ’66 is a sure giveaway that he’s a phony. I had a friend that went Marines right after high school, and he was home on leave when the attack happened. Rumors spread around that he was KIA that day.
Them: “Did you hear? Bob was killed in Beirut this morning”
Me: “Uh, no. I saw him with his girl at The Charcoal Pit on Friday having burgers & shakes”
Them: “No, no, no…he’s dead”
Me: “No, no, no…we’re playing street hockey at Spring JHS at noon. You should come”
For years people would bump into him thinking he was killed that day. He ended up being load master/crew chief or what ever they call them on Marine C-130’s.
I was thinking the same. The phonies must outnumber the actual vets of the attack. It wasn’t a huge unit that got hit.
Well it is only fair, the phony Viet of the Nam POW’s outnumber the real POW’s by a factor of about 20 to one or more. And that is only based on the over 13,000 who have falsely claimed to be Vietnam POW’s to the VA.

I ran into a dude that claimed being an Infantryman at Beirut in a cigar store. smelled something fishy (maybe it was the leather vest and fingerless gloves)
Asked him what he does to commemorate the day, if there was a monument around, that I’d like to attend to pay my respects, the date had to be coming up, it being late October and all (it was the 27th).
He shut up, pretty sure he didn’t know the date of the horrible loss.
Every single Marine that was in during 1983 was in Beruit. Or at least that’s what these dorks make it seem like.

Sorry, but not ‘every single Marine’ was there. I was just transferred from 2 years at 1st MAW to 1st MarDiv at Pendleton. Days later was Grenada, then Beirut barracks a week or so thereafter. S/F.

I suspect OWB meant Beirut at the time of the bombing (23 Oct 83) and Grenada Invasion (25 Oct 83). There have been rare occasions when someone has claimed to have been in both incidents.
You are correct, however, that 22nd MAU was in Grenada (25 Oct 83) and then went on to Beirut (17 Nov 83).
OK. Not arguing unit assignments/missions at all – have no way of knowing except to take the word of other peeps.
Still, the most specialist PoS’s claim to have been both places in late October 1983. Only a few, but that’s what makes them soooo special.
Motor-T he was. Every school in the Marine Corps threatens to make you Motor-T if you fail. It’s what kept me from failing out of 2841 skool.

Harrison just wanted to be a combat Vet without having been in combat. It’s easy and fun that way. Kind of like those who claim to have a disability without ever having it. Most vets would say the VA can have back their disability money if they could have back their health.
