Dumbassery

| March 5, 2018

In Houston, Texas, yesterday, Daniel Barber was at a party where he found a bullet proof vest, which, of course, he put on. According to news reports, he then told his friend Jason Allen Griffin, 39, to shoot him. Of course, Griffin complied. Well, Barber is now dead, despite Griffin’s attempt to reverse the “shoot me” process.

Investigators said Griffin left, the party with another person, and was arrested at an area hospital after he allegedly became suicidal.

Griffin remains hositalized.

Griffin is also looking at charges of felony possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of body armor and manslaughter.

It is unknown if the bullet penetrated the vest or passed into Barber through an unprotected area, or if anyone asked anyone else to hold their beer during the ill-fated stunt.

Darwin was seen nodding his head in approval.

Amen Bro. I don’t see a problem unless he had already produced offspring.

DARWIN AKHBAR!!!

RM3(SS)

Once again, Darwin for the win!

Casey

One fairly old Darwin story involved two ROTC students who were arguing whether a Kevlar vest would stop a knife thrust. They proceeded to test the theory.

It turns out the answer was “no.” Scratch one dumbass.

Aussiepusser

Another Darwin Award recipient. Cleaning out the gene pool of dumbasses since 1859

rgr769

Unfortunately, only one dumbass at a time.

Aussiepusser

Yes, that’s unfortunate. But there’s more dumbasses now than ever, so….

Dr.Crypto

Alex…I’ll take Darwin for $1000…..

Perry Gaskill

Forget it, Jake. It’s Houston…

Sapper3307

At least no innocent bystanders were shot.
P.S Why did the felon have a gun? That’s illegal?

UpNorth

And what will the children say? Should we ban the gun, the body armor or felons having guns? Or parties? Ooops, never mind, felons never have guns, right?

rgr769

I think it has something to do with the fact that he is a felon because he doesn’t conform his behavior to the standards set by the penal code.

SSgt. USMC

Body Armor Law in Texas.

In Texas, anyone can purchase and use a bulletproof vest, unless he or she has been convicted of a felony. Bulletproof vests and all other body armor can be purchased online or face-to-face.

Forest Green

“Felony possession” is not necessarily possession by a felon. It is probably possession of a firearm in a particular set of circumstances. E.g., possession of a firearm while committing a particular crime (like shooting your beer drinking buddy).

In most (all?) states; it is illegal for a felon to possess a firearm.

My question is; why is it illegal in Texas to own body armor?

11B-Mailclerk

Some people states prohibit felons from possessing armor.

11B-Mailclerk

Ack. How the heck. …

Some states prohibit.

Forest Green

Dam. Seems passive self-protection items would be ok for a felon. I’ll have to check for here in NC.

AZtoVA

“Jason Allen Griffin, 39, is facing charges of felon in possession of a weapon,”

There should be a law… oh, wait…

SSgt. USMC

“Felony possession”

This means illegal possession of drugs (anything that is not by a Doctor’s legally authorized prescription) by any person not legally authorized to have same, or a felon in possession of a weapon.

BOTH fall under the legal term “Felony possession”.

Grunt

Mmm. Yasssssss 🙂

Ex-PH2

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Claw

The KAK Wheel says “Hold My Beer While I Spin Up The Results”:

Daniel Barber (SIBLDAM*) 17 x 6 = 102
*Self Initiated Bernathian Level Dumb Ass Move

Jason Allen Griffin (BLDAM*) 31 x 5 = 155
*Bernathian Level Dumb Ass Move

rgr769

Does Barber get the extra (6) multiplier because he said: “Let’s test the vest. Go ahead, shoot me!”?

Thunderstixx

Probably said, “hold my beer” and that should be worth at least a 2X !!!

Claw

Affirmative.

((Over))

rgr769

((Roger, out.)) Any of you “cherries” think LieLie knows RTO procedure?

Ex-PH2

No. lielie is vehemently unaware of the parameters of RTO procedure.

RTO procedure is known only to those on the inside.

Depending on the circumstances, the multilevel use of RTO procedure, with or without procedure, can enhance comm status and/or speed up usage of available logistics to make room for more.

rgr769

Correctamundo. In SF we really sped up commo by sending our encoded messages at a rate of 300 characters per minute via a burst transmission device (a magnetic tape player). Google AN/GRC-109 and you can see what our radio system looked like, including our most un-fave commo component, the 35 lbs. hand crank generator w/ seat.

Commissioner Wretched

The Commissioner approves the application of the level of “Bernathian” to the stupidity shown in this incident.

A Proud Infidel®™

BUT IS THAT with or without FUll Retard Points®

Instinct

Unpossible!!! Everyone knows that felons don’t have guns!

Yef

Felon in possession of a firearm will be the first charge to be dropped when the prosecutors get there.

YEF DOESN’T LIVE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS WHERE THAT CHARGE WILL NEVER BE DROPPED BY PROSECUTORS

Devtun

‘@##$ that hurt’. Yeah, it sucks that pesky kinetic energy has to go somewhere.

rgr769

I wonder if there is a product liability suit in this scenario. After all, it is obvious the vest was a epic fail.

2/17 Air Cav

I was half hoping that after Genius #1 donned the vest, Genius #2 shot him in the head. I would have preferred that but, no, Genius #1 was shot in the chest.

rgr769

Based upon the look of lack of intellect on the face of Genius #2 per his mugshot, I think your first scenario was a serious possibility. Maybe Genius #2 shot #1 with one of them “highly powered military grade weapons of war.”

11B-Mailclerk

even if the vest stopped the slug, there can be 3-4 inch temporary intrusion/indentation into the chest cavity, as the vests are not rigid unless equipped with a hard plate.

That sort of thing can fatally bruise the heart, rupture lungs, shatter ribs (which can cause fatal bleeding)

There are common handguns that punch -way- out of their weight class, and can penetrate common vests.

Not all vests are equal. Some barely stop 9mm.

rgr769

The ones they gave us in the Viet of the Nam (called Flak Jackets) wouldn’t even stop a FMJ pistol bullet. Anyway, we were told they wouldn’t. Never heard of a story of idiots trying to test that proposition.

11B-Mailclerk

That matches what I was told about the ones available to us in the mid eighties.

Basically layers of “ballistic nylon” , intended to stop she’ll fragments, which tent to be irregular shaped, jagged, and fairly low velocity at the distanced where armor can stop them

Close enough to punch through? The blast has already killed you.

Modern aramid fiber changes the game. The latest stuff is even better.

NHSparky

Huh. Self-resolving issue.

Zero fucks given.

Fyrfighter

Agree Sparky, other than I want to know the brand and model of the vest, so i don’t order one of the same…

ALVO

Kinda FAILED the “My Genes Are Worthy Of Being Passed On ” Test. I guess while the vest was erroneously classified as “Bullet Proof” , the Mensa Valedictorian wasn’t. What…a….FUCKING…
IDIOT.
Well, I guess he asked and now he will be recieved…..

I’ve seen the same thing happen in the barracks, except the person shot didn’t die.

SaraSnipe

One of the Specialists in our unit tried out his IBA on a stump before putting it on, and having a friend shoot him with a .22LR. He said it hurt, but not too bad. He became a member of San Antonio’s finest. Good soldier, just kind of nuts.

AW1Ed

Came to make my obligatory “Darwin grins” comment, but I see he’s well covered here already.

FatCircles0311

Unlawful possession of armor? What the fuck is that bullshit….

Fyrfighter

cause he was a felon maybe?I’d be ok with that.. if they can’t legally own a weapon, thy shouldn’t b able to own armor.. otherwise, I agree, it’s bullshit!

rgr769

Many states have statutes prohibiting felons from possessing body armor. Someone figured out they have the armor as an aid in committing more felonies.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Well, as they say-Grin and beer it

Mark Lauer

And this DIDN’T happen in Florida??

Tony180A

What a pair of rocket scientists!
Bullet Proof vest my ass! You just haven’t been shot with a large enough caliber weapon.

Several years ago I went to a Force Protection Expo at Quantico. One of the vendors had a level 4 product that withstood at least 8 rounds of .308 without compromise. The vest was rigged up on a gel silhouette that had these neat whiz bang gadgets that measured impact energy and back side deformation.

It was very impressive and I can only imagine the technology has only improved since then. It did not survive 1 round of .300 Win Mag but hey if you’re shot with .300 Win Mag (or >) it’s really not your day.

OK, OK, OK. Sure, what happened may be illegal, but hey, shouldn’t the shooter get an award for removing his buddy from the gene pool?

11B-Mailclerk

Give him a tin-plated toilet plunger as a trophy.

BlueCord Dad

Just saw this. Another Darwin Award winner!

All I can say in defense of Houston is that there are a lot of (D)imwits and out-of-state folks there.

Unfortunately there are more where those came from.
