Before his retirement in 2016, the decorated former Marine colonel served in the corps for 33 years, went on numerous combat tours and commanded the Wounded Warrior Regiment at Quantico. He was given a key to the city of St. Louis in 2011 during its Marine Week, which he helped organize.
On Thursday, Tomko appeared before a Virginia Beach judge, wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, handcuffs and leg irons. He was there to face several felony charges of child sex abuse.
The 54-year-old is accused of assaulting three children during numerous stays at their Virginia Beach home from 2002 to 2009. The incidents include three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, three counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of child cruelty.
Each of the victims, all now adults, offered emotional testimony Thursday during a lengthy preliminary hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Judge Randall Blow ruled that there was sufficient evidence to send the case to a grand jury.
Tomko was court martialed before he left the Marine Corps in 2016 for conduct unbecoming, possession of steroids, violating a protective order and driving under the influence. He spent two months in the Naval Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Sometimes a DUI is just a one time lapse in judgement, but you lobbed it right in there with child molestation. I agree with the child molestation part. I’ve known plenty of good guys get caught up on a simple .075 type DUI or IS case. I’d rather see that guy stay in than the guys who’ve popped hot for cocaine, and I’ve seen that too.

Yeah, his father was the pastor there for more than 50 years. The victims, now adults, said that his taking on the job of pastor prompted them to come forward in order to protect kids at the church from him.

A charging document indicated that Tomko had been accused of forcibly kissing a female Marine corporal, the newspaper said.

Those kids apparently weren’t his only go round with sexual misconduct. Here’s hoping the civilian courts do a better job of getting this giant fucking turd off the streets than his Marine buddies did.

What I’m not sure of is whether or not this would be a case of double jeopardy since Va. Bch Criminal Courts chose to take up the matter and prosecute. I’m no sea lawyer though.
Btw in case those are wandering. I served briefly with Shane while we were both Sergeants at MECEP Preparatory School in San Diego (Jun – Aug 88). I retired in 2004 after 23 yrs of service. A lot has happened in those 30 years since that summer but certainly Shane Tomko rapidly came off his rails not long after leaving San Diego that summer

As far as his pension, I think that most states will deduct room and board from that while he is locked up.

Served in 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines with him in 1994 when we deployed to Haiti. I always thought he was loud and obnoxious and an attention seeker but the commanders loved him and he was considered a water-walker. He chased me to my navy blue escort and after I shut driver’s side door he punched his fist through my window and reached in for my left hand and tried to pull off engagement ring. I ended up with a broken finger and lost my baby. I believe today he would be charged for attempted murder or murder while I was still carrying our baby.
I went to ER where I reported to Columbia PD. I pressed charges. It was not 2 months later I heard he got married to a woman in the Marine Corps. Never even received an apology from him.Nothing.
I have struggled with ptsd and depression for many years.
Do people even understand what he has done to these children? I was an young adult woman and I was not taken seriously enough in 1991. The times were different.At that time his boys protected him. I remember him losi g his temper often and clinching his fists okay that was before his ptsd guys! Had I had help prosecuting him back then this could have possibly been prevented.
As for the other victims, I’m so very proud of these 3 adult children for having the courage to testify against him. I always said that God sees everyting!!! What goes around eventually does comes around.

Another ’93-’95 G 2/2 here, was with 2nd Plt for the Oki deployment under Tomko and was HQ for Haiti. I’m the tall redhead who later went to STA shortly after we got back from Haiti. I worked with Tomko later with 3/6, he was a boss there as well and loved by his company.
This really is disappointing to me, while I had early doubts on the charges when he was still a Colonel, I am to say the least absolutely stunned at these charges. As someone who once looked up to him for a couple decades, this is about as big of a fall as I’ve ever personally seen in my lifetime and is a huge letdown to every Marine and sailor that ever served with him. I hope justice is served, swiftly and fairly.
I am a Quincy native and know the Tomko family and “church” reputation all too well. Someone needs to go way back (1970s or earlier) and look into his dad’s history. George was accused of molesting young children for years, one of whom is in my family. Ask about “Happy Hour” at Parkview, where he preyed on underprivileged children. Ask the authorities who supposedly “investigated” for years why charges were never brought. Ask why when people in the public questioned and accused, the answer was “don’t open that can of worms.” Ask why George was allowed to be a school bus driver even after accusations were known across that small river city. My name is Katie. I had been their church 1989, 90,91. I went on family trips with George, Violet, and Shane. We were engaged to be married and I was pregnant with our baby. It would have been my first baby.
Violet was sweet but Quiet. I felt that she wanted to protect me from only what she knew. Very strange how secretive they were. Shane loved to parade me around as if I were on display.Now at 49 I understand how that alone is abusive. It was a different time. I noticed Shane always needing his father’s approval. Not sure he ever got it. I noticed that his father George received a key to Quincy. And Shane a key to My home town ST. LOUIS. I found a trunk in our place in Columbia MO with about 50 some odd VHS sex tapes. I thought it strange and Excessive as I had brothers growing up and I know that they eould have told me to stay away after finding the tapes. But since I was already pregnant …..I began getting a sick feeling in my gut that something was not quite right. I was a young 20 yr young woman with strong convictions and good moral standing with my peers. Never did I expect him to hurt me physically as he ended up doing. Neither did I understand how this Suppossed Great Guy comes from a church upbringing and assaults me and I lose the baby after he assaults me. Without any remorse from him at All? To me this seems like a typical plea deal where justice really isn’t served, a perp gets off easy on softened charges because a case would have been too costly and/or it wasn’t a strong enough case to bring a full conviction, just leaves me with more questions in the end but where there’s smoke, there’s fire and I’m now certain he did some real bad shit. If he was really innocent, he would have fought it tooth and nail.
I’m just an outsider to it all, another Marine who served under him for many years and once had an enormous amount of respect for him. That is all gone now.
I emulated myself after him. I hung out with some of the STA platoon guys probably while you were there.
Many did that, the bulk of Kilo Co near worshipped him. He was my Plt Cmdr in 2/2 when he was a butter bar and I had a stripe with landing gear, and we loved the man. When he came to 3/6 while I was already there, I was ecstatic to serve with him again and supported him both from STA and later in Afghanistan when I went over to CAAT as a SSgt. I have many, many fond memories in the field with him, all of which I now remember with a large grain of salt.
What none of us knew about him doesn’t detract from what any of us accomplished, his transgressions are his own and we were all fooled.

This guy is a real piece of dirt. I hope he gets called out of retirement to be Court Martial and fully stripped down to nothing. There are things, so many things he did illegally and thought he could get away with it, being protected by the ‘boys’. He was in charge of Wounded Warrior project while he deliberately trashed injured Marines and those injured while in combat all for his own good. God, how did he get away with so much. The amount of sexual assault he got away with in the fleet aboard ship is also astonishing. I can tell you, the abuse he did to some of his Marines, is so severe, events that happened in Afghanistan that if it became a national story Americans would weep. He needs to be charged back under DOD. Feed him to the sharks.
I am another victim of Todd Shane Tomko. If enough of us come forward then we can save future innocents from him. We cannot be silent. He has been convicted before and has many restraining orders against him. I’m scared for my life but I’m coming forward. Let’s all stand together against this evil. May God help us.
