Peter Wang; posthumously appointed to West Point
Jim, MustangCryppie and Richard send us links to the Daily Caller which reports that the US Military Academy has posthumously appointed JROTC cadet Peter Wang who selflessly gave his life for his fellow students last week to West Point class 2025.
West Point will provide the family of Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting victim Peter Wang a letter of acceptance to West Point Class of 2025, which was his dream, and honorarium tokens. His funeral is today. pic.twitter.com/kOb9P5mjdd

Wang’s neighbor told Fox News recently his dream was to attend the U.S. military academy at West Point.
Additionally, the Army has awarded a medal to each of the cadets killed in the tragedy;
Three Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets killed in the Florida school massacre have been awarded medals by the US Army, according to a report.
The family of Alaina Petty, 14, was presented with the Medal of Heroism during a memorial service Monday, the Army told The Daily Beast.
Relatives of 15-year-old Peter Wang were expected to receive the medal during his memorial service on Tuesday, while the family of Martin Duque, 14, will be given the medal on Saturday.
The medal recognizes JROTC cadets whose performance “involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities.” The Army program trains potential officers

This story just keeps getting dustier.
Farking mini, invisible, onion cutting, cubicle ninjas.
Dusty in here…
He and two of his fallen JROTC Cadets, are getting a ROTC Heroism award (Posthumously) as well.
Don’t hear much about the other two….
I actually felt like it was the other way. I’ve heard a lot about Cadet Petty and hadn’t heard anything about Cadet Wang other than what was posted here in the Military honors thread.
Heck I’ve heard more about Cadet Walls and Haab who herded students into the JROTC room and used the Kevlar blankets they had on hand to fortify the room than I’d heard about Cadet Wang or Duque.
Now that is the definition of a class act. Notice the cadet opted for the real military academy not that other one or the zoomie ski resort.
Now now…The Merchant Marine Academy is supposed to be a fine place to get educated.
😉
True. At USMA West Point, they prepare warrior leaders. At that other academy they apparently teach thinking with the wrong head and everything but seamanship. At the Zoomie Ski Resort they apparently teach political correctness as a major, golf etiquette as a minor. Maybe if they made future Navy ship captains attend the Merchant Marine Academy less would be relieved following avoidable collisions. Just saying.
Cough **Spenser Rapone** Cough
Never met Cadet Wang USMA. But something tells me that morally Wang knocks out Rapone like an M-1 taking out a pos BMP.
No doubt in my mind.
King’s Point has issues of its own the last few years, with academics deteriorating to the point they’re in danger of losing their accreditation. Among other issues. Most of the real talent on the merchie side is coming out of SUNY Maritime, Massachusetts Maritime, and Maine Maritime. I work with some recent KP grads and they’re a bunch of ass-hairs.
As a retired enlisted airman, I should take offense at that. But I can’t. Recently, the Air Force Academy First Sergeant put out an email to all cadets that they should adhere to standards both on and off duty. He then made a reference to Michael Jordan, who presented a professional appearance throughout his career. It seems some of the cadets were offended by this “microaggression” and the academy vice commandant rebuked him publicly. I have nothing but disdain for the leadership right now.
Jordan was a douche both on and off the court. Kind of a bad choice, but hardly censure worthy.
I spent 15 years AF enlisted (MSgt) then the Army made me a warrant officer and sort of a gentleman in 74′. I loved my time in the AF and it was a great branch to be a member of from 58-74′. Our son is a retired AF MSgt who could not wait to retire because of what the AF has become in the way of over reaction and touchy feely.
1SG should’ve referred to this Jordan:
http://www.starnewsonline.com/news/20060516/jordan-sibling-retires-after-years-as-army-all-star
Is that the best they can do for an example to follow?
I’m surprised that the cadets were offended by this “micro-aggression” must not have been pop culture enough for them.
It’s not like he suggested that they emulate follow someone like say an Audie Murphy, Alvin York or any of the many fallen heroes from recent wars.
Probably sent them to their safe spaces for milk and cookies…
Offense taken.

I’m normally all for (ahem) ‘friendly banter’ between the various branches of service. 🙂
Respectfully, this isn’t the time nor place for it, in my opinion.
BZ to all the cadets involved.
Duty, Honor, Country. I’d say Cadet Wang checked off all the boxes. Kudos to West Point for stepping up
Awww. Now this is a very good outcome. The family will treasure this honor. And it will remind them how grateful we all are.
::sniff::
Just a reminder, there are heroes among the kids in high-school.
Blasted allergies.
::sniff::
Why do they always choose to chop onions when I read stories like this? These cadets showed the true mettle of this country!
Far too young for this, they were and are the valiant.
Who put raw onions on the countertop?
Sorry, I had to walk away from the counter…my eyes were burning.
Well done, Army. Well done.
What a legacy this young man leaves behind, and also, what a way for West Point to step up. God bless the USA.
Leadership by Example.
Gives me more hope for the youth of our nation.
God Bless those young men, and may the Angels of His Mercy bring solace to all their families and friends.
I was a JROTC cadet in high school before I joined the Army; I am proud to call these young cadets who gave their lives my comrades-in-arms…
I was JROTC back in high school in the mid 70s too, CH. I doubt our entire battalion had the courage these three cadets demonstrated. I know I didn’t, not at 15.
No excuse! I’m crying.
No damn ninjas
No damn onions
No damn dust
No damn allergies
Just a heart full of pain and pride.
This is right, the older I get the more it seems to hurt to see the promise of a great young life cut tragically short.
As I realize I probably have less than half the time I’ve currently pissed away to date, perhaps the reality of just how wonderful, but really short this journey actually is when we consider it fully is starting to hit home.
I know it would be hard, but maybe for the rest of the week, we could, in honor of these young men (living and dead) go without any phonies?
Just a thought.
From your mouth to God’s ears. I second that motion.
Hey! Do I go to your work and knock the Happy Meal out of your hand?
Gaaaaak I just aspirated a cracker!
That was epic!
Ow…
Just think of the awesome “Phony WEEK”you could feature.
And it’s a carwash towel- not a Happy Meal!
🙂
Thanks for the clarification; I thought it was “rent by the hour” room service towel 😃
I think Jonn has a notebook full of ‘shit-I’m-gonna-use-but-I-don’t-know-exactly-when.’
Actually, to honor these and other heroes, ridiculing, lambasting and otherwise smoking the exposed phonies should be at a fever pitch. I understand the reason for your suggestion, but when three Junior ROTC Cadets do what these three did, well, it is just more shame for those who falsely lay claim to military honors, awards, and decorations, not to mention the nature and character of their service.
Hearing of the bravery of these young people makes me a little less worried about our country’s future. There is hope, for a change.
Hear! Hear!
I need to add another TAH category: Real Heroes.
Just to remind us on 31 December that it hasn’t been all faking liars, but we have seen and honored some men and women who are doing it correctly.
Now I have to start over from 1JAN18 and re-calibrate. Blast it.
And in this case, it was those who hadn’t even made it to adulthood yet. Shining examples of what people can – and should – aspire to be.
Damn nice…I’m thinking that those fucking “can’t do that” bureaucrats and other garden variety assholes ran for cover in the face of real leadership…yep, gotta say I’m moistening up a bit…good post!
If this didn’t affect your tear ducts, you, my friend are a cad…
I’m glad to see these young people recognized and their heroism acknowledged.
There definitely is hope for the future of our country so long as we have young people like these.
Damned if my air conditioner didn’t start blowing dust all through my apartment when I read that Cadet Wang was posthumously accepted to West Point. Timing, man.
A more deserving honor could not be found.
BZ USMA
Odd time of year for my allergies to suddenly flare up.
Good to see USMA stepping up and doing this.
Maybe there’s hope for the place yet.
If nobody shared this part.. Cadet Wangs parents recently moved to that school zone because the ROTC class was taught there…he wanted to be a good roll model to his three younger siblings…
Without a doubt his parents did a awesome job raising such a outstanding young man and we offer our sincerely heartfelt condolences.
I have a work colleague the graduated from West Point, and him and his whole network of alumni are coming through with these outstanding gestures of gratitude to these fine young people. Duty, Honor, Country indeed. BZ to the Army/USMA for stepping up.
A big WELL DONE Young Warrior. You earned your place in Valhalla.

Would the JROTC cadets who died defending others at their place of Duty be entitled to the Purple Heart, in same same way as Maj HASSAN’S victims?
As far as I can determine, he is not eligible for the Purple Heart under current rules. Even if he was eligible, I doubt that the shooter and the circumstances fall under the “enemy” label, from a military sense.
He does qualify for JROTC decorations, and there are appropriate and prestigious ones. They are being awarded.
He will be honored at his funeral. By acclaim it will be military in character, if not in every specific official detail. All the more honor thus.
West Point has claimed him, no small honor there. That is rather unusual indeed.
Many seriously seasoned folks on this board and elsewhere have claimed him as part of the fraternity. He has earned the respect and admiration of a bunch of some decidedly picky professionals, and that may be the highest honor of all.
