UN General Assembly votes to condemn US Law

| December 22, 2017

Apparently, there was a non-binding vote in the UN’s General Assembly to condemn President Trump’s decision to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Despite UN Ambassador Nikky Haley’s warning that nations which voted against the US risk losing taxpayer dollars in aid, 128 nations voted against the US, 9 voted with us and 35 abstained from voting.

Haley responded;

“The United States will remember this day,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the assembly.

“America will put our embassy in Jerusalem,” Haley said. “No vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that.

“But this vote will make a difference on how Americans look at the UN and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the UN,” she said.

“When we make generous contributions to the UN we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognized and respected.”

Not surprisingly, those who brought this matter to the General Assembly are calling it “bullying”. Think about it – we are the largest contributor to the UN’s day-to-day operations, the UN won’t condemn Iran’s human rights violations, they have Venezuela and Cuba on their Human Rights Council, but we’re bullying them when we threaten to withhold taxpayer funds if they vote against us for enforcing our own laws.

Yes, Congress overwhelmingly voted to move the embassy back in 1995, the three presidents who should have moved it, didn’t bother. From the Washington Post;

[In October, 1995] the House and Senate passed a bill called the “Jerusalem Embassy Act,” which formally recognized the city as the country’s capital and called for the U.S. Embassy in Israel to be moved there from Tel Aviv by 1999. Support for the bill was overwhelming. It passed the Senate by a 93 to 5 vote, with four Republicans and one Democrat voting no. It passed the House 374 to 37, with 153 Democrats joining most of the new Republican majority that had swept into power in 1994.

Maybe the UN should invade Chicago or something to show that they mean business. That is, if they can afford the paper to write us a letter after they get their budget cut. We could probably pay off our national debt soon with money we save from not paying the UN and supporting armies around the world of ingrates.

Ms. Haley does not mince words. I like her.

I love her. Doesn’t mince words. The UN has been anti-American for years. Even the Iraq war was started after the impotent UN had spent years threatening Saddam with action and him flagrantly ignoring them.

Don’t know why we continue to put money into that pile of do-nothings. I’d rather we put that money into NATO. At least when 9/11 happened NATO actually did something useful.

AW1Ed

Pffft. What’s the UN going to do, send us a strongly worded letter?

A Proud Infidel®™

And then send us a SECOND strongly worded letter if we don’t cower to them!

Well, since Venezuela is on the Human Rights Committee (snorrrtt!), the latest news from that beleaguered country is that the economy has contracted 16.5%, people are crossing into Colombia by the thousands and desperately trying door-to-door sales of stuff to generate some cash, AND Maduro’s government has declared opposition parties to be illegal for the next election.
Various recent news stories are at this link.

Their is something about the hand that feeds/pays that I remember.

Graybeard

Cut their water off.
IMHO, the UN is a good idea that comes apart when it hits the hard reality of the world.
We need to quit financing those who oppose us.

Ex-PH2

As I recall, the UN grew out of Wilson’s League of Nations idea, which came off as a sort of campfire circle where we could all just get together and settle our differences.

It didn’t stop Hitler and it didn’t stop Lenin/Stalin, and certainly didn’t stop the Japanese, did it?

Some things look good on paper, like Tesla’s electric cars, but when put into effect, they catch fire and destroy things instead.

In my own view, I think the UN has long outlived whatever use it may have had and has become a venue for throwing money down a black hole.

The Other Whitey

Wilson was big on the New World Order. He was also big on white supremacy. Sounds like exactly the kind of guy whose ideas we should implement, right?

I’d like to buy the World a Coke, and keep it company.

Graybeard

That sold a lotta Coca-Cola in the 1960s.

Skyjumper

Ex-PH2, back in 2012, someone in the world sent the UN Coke to keep it company.

Of course, the UN used Sgt. Schultz’s line…..”I know nothing”.

Ex-PH2

So, then using the response “snorrrtt” would be inappropriate, perhaps?

Graybeard

Certainly questionable.

Casey

Actually the UN came out of FDR & Churchill’s Atlantic Charter. They worked very hard to make it more realistic than the League of Nations. Alas they hadn’t anticipated the Soviets using their veto as a matter of course in the Security Council, which neutered that process.

Ex-PH2

How much cash would we actually save if the US left the UN?

Graybeard

I thought I had read 23%, but close enough.
I know we could put that $8b to better use elsewhere.

Hack Stone

Think of all of the Congressional Sexual Harrassment claims that could be settled with that $8,000,000,000. Or, that could provide startup money for 13 solar power panel companies that go belly up before selling one panel.

Cornholio

Do you know how painful hot coffee through the nose is? Shame on you!

Ex-PH2

Gee, that’s $8 billion/year that could be put on rebuilding US infrastructure, creating jobs, and bolstering productivity.

rgr769

How about we take that wasted money and spend it to build the wall?

HMCS(FMF) ret

Might as well kick them out if their digs in NYC and make into something more useful…

Stacy0311

$8 billion a year is the money we give them.
IF we toss the whole UN out of the US, think how much we would save in parking fines. And we could probably sell the building and other property for a good chunk of change.

The Other Whitey

Okay, now to follow through with the consequences. Cut all UN funding, and cut foreign aid to the naysayers. Fuck ‘em.

What do we fund in the UN, anyway? Genocide in Rwanda? Infecting Haiti with cholera? Yeah, like I said, fuck ‘em.

Graybeard

I understand that Trump via Miz Haley has already cut the funding from some of the UN boondoggles.

I do not believe that Miz Haley’s “we will take note and remember” threat is empty. The UN-elites haven’t fully realized that they are no longer talking to 0bama, or a Bush or a Clintoon, but someone who says what they mean and mean what they say.

That Guy

IN response, I vote that the UN can suck it, and that we cut a lot of funding to countries that voted against us.

A Proud Infidel®™

I’ve heard that the Trump Administration is already planning to do so and that Ambassador Haley has already hinted that.

OWB

Yeah, right. A group that names such countries as Syria to head their so-called Human Rights Commission. They make themselves almost impossible to take seriously.

Sure, in concept, having a UN sounds like a good idea. Rather like a bunch of socialist concepts sound like good ideas. It’s that pesky implementation phase that proves a concept unworkable in the real world.

“World Peace” and “can’t-we-all-just-get-along?” may be worthy goals but only when tempered with realism. Like knowing that we will never actually attain the goal.

Ex-PH2

Spot on!

A Proud Infidel®™

Aaaaahh, another clear sign that ADULTS are once again in charge, FUCK the United Nothing!

These is is modern times. Teleconferencing can accomplish their mission without a physical plant. No need to fly everywhere on my dime.
Stay the fuck home in your own shithole and save the world from there.

RetiredDevilDoc8404

Stop funding them, and start putting the boot on the cars that tote the “diplomats” around whose countries owe parking/traffic fines. Ought to ship the lot of them elsewhere that real estate has got to be worth a bundle.

UN Building…pfft. They turned it into low rent housing.

Ex-PH2

It’s kind of dated, too: stodgy, cluttered, anachronistic. Maybe it’s time to replace it.

NHSparky

Maybe my reference was a bit too obscure:

Heavy Metal (1981).

Skyjumper

Better yet, how about imploding it……just make sure that not everyone in there (Iran, Syria, etc.) gets the memo.

AW1Ed

Guess which countries voted with the US against the UN Resolution? Not “Abstained” but actually stood with the US? They are:
Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo.

Nice to know who ones friends really are.

A Proud Infidel®™

President Trump has been quoted saying he’ll remember which United Nothing members voted against us when they ask for Foreign Aid and talking about money being saved.

FatCircles0311

Yeah I think it’s time to pull out of Europe. They’ve had enough military welfare.

Yef

Wow. Guatemala and Honduras?

Israel, Marshall Islands and Togo I expected.

Micronesia, Nauru and Palau I don’t know enough.

I thought Micronesia was a geographical realm, not a country.

What happened to our Euroweenie allies?

Bill R.

We should stop any and all funding immediately. Give them two years to find a site and build a new UN building. At the end of those two years, ensure they are all off American soil.

We aren’t perfect but no other country in history has done as much for the world as the USA. F’em!!
