Vandalized car report was false
Dauntarius Williams, a 21-year-old Manhattan, Kansas resident reported to police that his car was vandalized with racial slurs and threats. The incident triggered local events which included “discussions” about race and diversity. Until Dauntarius admitted to police that he had vandalized his own car according to the Kansas State Collegian;
The FBI assisted the [Riley County Police Department] with the investigation into what had initially been called a hate crime. RCPD Director Brad Schoen and Riley County attorney Barry Wilkerson have opted not to file charges against Williams for the false report, concluding that doing so would be against the best interests of the Manhattan community, the press release said.
“I would like to deeply apologize to the community,” Williams said in the release. “The whole situation got out of hand when it shouldn’t have even started. It was just a Halloween prank that got out of hand. I wish I could go back to that night but I can’t. I just want to apologize from the bottom of my heart for the pain and news I have brought you all.”
It was not immediately clear why Williams made the initial police report for what he called a prank.
The Riley County Police Department explained why Williams wasn’t arrested;
“While Williams’ mistake had a decidedly negative impact on the community, please recognize that he, like many of us when we were young, is a young man who made a mistake and is now doing his best to own up to it,” Schoen said in the release.
I wonder if the prosecutors and police would have been as understanding if the report had turned out to be real.

He dragged Kansas State through the ringer in national news, and come to find out he lied about being a student there. The K-State college paper had a scathing piece in it right after this happened about how many horrible racists there were at the school, etc. It’s goi g to be fun watching them eat crow.

The decision was made by the Director of the police department and the prosecutor. I would imagine the conversation with the detective(s) investigating this “hate crime” ended with the chief saying “he won’t be charged, we don’t want to piss off the NAACP and BLM, and that’s it!!”. Sometimes, those at the top determine what’s going to be done, this sounds like one of those times.

He also lied after he called The Star after the incident and said he was a Kansas State student and was leaving the university. Kansas State said it had no record of Williams being a student.
The incident fueled racial tensions at the university and in the community, and the FBI opened a civil rights.

A young man, ha! 21yrs old is not a kid. I was a Patrolman for the Chicago Police Department working a “project car” at 21.
I remember being with a friend and we accidentally broke the neighbors window with a baseball, we were 17yrs old at the time.
His neighbor complained to my buddys ma, and her response was, “Mr Tinny, they are only 17yr old kids. What were you doing when you were 17?”

While it is definitely something that will crack hate groups, they can get to the bottom of bullshit claims as well.
I had a Captain I worked for at MCRD who was going through the process and got hired by the FBI when he got out.
I watched him do investigations on DIs who had violated the SOP.
He was not someone you would want looking into you… and this was BEFORE the FBI trained him.
As a side note he was VERY interested in investigating hate groups.
I would love to find him now and see how many wild goose chases he went on.

There is a website that catalogues all these phony hate incidents. They have logged over 300 of the known ones just in the last few years. There are many more suspected fake ones that can’t be conclusively proved to be phony.
