3 US Special Forces soldiers killed in Niger
Chief Tango sends us links to the news that three Special Forces soldiers were killed and two others wounded near the Niger/Mali frontier when they were ambushed by militants of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb while training Niger forces in the region. From the New York Times;
Details of the late-afternoon ambush were sketchy. Soldiers from the 3rd Special Forces Group were assisting their Nigerien counterparts with counterterrorism training when they came under attack in a remote part of the country. As of late Wednesday, there had been no claims of responsibility.
What you might not know about Niger;
The United States is building a $50 million drone base in Agadez, Niger. When completed next year, it will allow Reaper surveillance drones to fly from hundreds of miles closer to southern Libya, to monitor Islamic State insurgents flowing south and other extremists flowing north from the Sahel region.
According to the New York Post, the wounded soldiers are in stable condition.

God rest you, Warriors, and comfort your families.
Rest in peace, men.
RIP. My condolences to the families.
As a veteran of the GWOT in Africa, I’ve always known that this day would come, but it didn’t make it any easier as I watched the news come in yesterday. We have for to long ignored the sacrifices made by our service members who have been performing hazardous service in remote areas with no realistic medevac, no trauma care, and no QRF.
Hopefully, this will shine a light on an issue and area of the globe that has been long neglected by DOD and the services. It’s more than ironic that DOD has repeatedly either turned down or bureaucratically stalled hostile fire/imminent danger pay for Niger and Mali for multiple years. Perhaps this incident will finally force them to revisit this issue.
And the folks who have been picking up the load there – the despised French. Just because they don’t fight in many of our wars doesn’t mean they don’t fight at all.
True. They have done some interesting things, like 6 combat parachute jumps in Niger/Mali during 2015.
They’ve fought with us in A-Stan, and fought well, and paid the price in blood more than once.
I find it odd that those with the strongest negative opinions of French warriors have never fought alongside them and/or seen them in battle.
Not referring to you at all with this statement.
‘It’s more than ironic that DOD has repeatedly either turned down or bureaucratically stalled hostile fire/imminent danger pay for Niger and Mali for multiple years.’
Fvcking nonsense. Smacks of Honduras and Nicaragua. I hope you’re right about some heads being removed from asses.
RIP
3 KIA + 2 (?) WIA? Tailored ambush trying to bag some Americans?
When you get the tactical details, fill us in if possible, please.
Niger, Please.
/rest guys, you’ve done God’s work.
I see what you did there.
Haha it’s funny to make light of where three of America’s greatest warriors were killed.
/ rest assured your still an asshole. You fat, Air Force fuck. Completely distasteful. Add that to your wall of insults, you fucking douchebag.
Rest in peace Soldiers. God be with their families.
May the road rise to meet these men, and may they kick the Devil out of Hell.
If we are building a base in Niger, which is scant information itself, does this mean that things are slowly building up to more warfer in Africa?
If so, I do not envy the people who have to fight it, but how do we stop it from going further?
Amen
They’re already at the Teamhouse near Fiddler’s Green.
Rest easy, Brothers from another Mother.
