Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau: PTSD made me a crook
According to the Washington Post, Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau is the first active duty admiral to be convicted of a felony for his part in the Fat Leonard espionage and bribery case. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for accepting bribes in the form of Vietnamese prostitutes and $40,000 in cash among other enticements. He wrote a letter to the judge;
In a letter to the court, Gilbeau did not address his interactions with Francis but said his misconduct stemmed from post-traumatic stress, survivor’s guilt and a head injury he suffered as a result of a mortar attack in Iraq in 2007. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his wounds.
“I am devastated by the situation I currently find myself in,” he wrote. “I do not desire a defense of my charges based on mental illness, but I do ask that this horrible condition that I suffer is taken into account as a potential mitigating factor.”
Gilbeau’s attorneys said that he still receives intensive psychiatric treatment. To ease his anxiety, doctors prescribed him a therapy dog, a fluffy white Cavachon crossbreed named Bella.
The 16-pound animal accompanied Gilbeau into the courtroom Wednesday and was given its own chair at the defense table.
Defense attorney David Benowitz said that the dog was trained to calm Gilbeau by climbing in his lap whenever it sensed a spike in his blood pressure or anxiety level. He said Gilbeau would be deprived of the animal if he was sentenced to prison.
Oh, boo-hoo. The only sympathy I have is for the dog. There are millions of veterans who are suffering quietly with their own traumas without the benefit of Vietnamese hookers and large sums of cash – things he could afford on his six-figure salary without bribes.
According to a reader, his Purple Heart was bogus John Kerry bullshit.
A mortar hit the other end of the gravel parking lot where he was standing, a stone hit him. All he required was a small bandage. He complaint daily until this PH medal was approved. He did nothing for the troops.
When admirals get wounded, someone isn’t doing their job. Survivor’s guilt, my pink ass.

Very few things piss me off more than shitbags that get a scratch and whine until they get their PH approved. I’ve seen more than my fair share of Fobbits and even some soldiers outside the wire that got PHs for something a damn band-aid would fix. Meanwhile, I have dead friends and other buddies with lifelong, debilitating injuries (myself included) that will forever suffer in pain because of wounds. Medals these days are an absolute joke.
Stick – you can take some consolation in the fact that these whiners can only have wet-dreams of being half the man you are.
Unfortunately I’ve seen my share of bling-chasers who do not want to be the kind of person the bling is supposed to honor. These wanna-bes then end up living sad, sad lives knowing they are living a lie.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say medals are a joke, but in this case and several others, certain people have made a mockery out of them.
Sadly, medals these days are often a complete scam. Seeing a 1SG get an ARCOM for being politically correct on FaceBook while junior enlisted infantry soldiers get an ARCOM for an entire combat deployment? Oh man, does that just grind my gears.
A SPC in my old unit, after a bullet went through his shoulder, ran through RPK/PKM/AK fire to drag a wounded soldier to safety so he could get treated. That SPC saved his life. He took a bullet to his front plate in doing so, cracking a couple ribs. Had he waited until it was “safe” to get him, it’s possible that soldier would not have made it. That SPC’s BS w/V was denied. Ok then, that’s understandable- what about an ARCOM w/V? Denied. Our company commander objected, but all he got in the end was just a regular ARCOM. The same award that went to that FaceBook hero. How are those two actions remotely similar?
I’ve even seen a couple junior enlisted 11Bs get certificates of appreciation for a combat deployment to Afghanistan, when they served honorably and without any Article 15s or any stain on their service. Even AAMs were denied. It’s a slap in the face to see these soldiers get a certificate for facing the Muj in combat when an E7 and up or an O1 and up gets a BS for doing their desk job and nothing more. Some deserve them, sure, but you have to admit the deck is stacked against our junior enlisted and junior NCOs. This kind of medal-chasing, bling-oriented culture in senior leadership truly disgusts me.
Disgusting.
Dispicable.
I agree with you. Sadly, as someone who feels I fall into one of the former categories above, when I see someone in the latter category above (such as yourself) I feel like extra- salty shit. I caught shrapnel and I feel guilty I received the same award as guys who lost legs, arms, were mangled, and forever will have a struggle just to live life. But there dude – My hopes are that this shit bag is being eaten alive by the shame and guilt he should feel. Asshat.
You shouldn’t feel that way, Cav. My comment refers to those that go crying and whining with their boo boos to medical and actively go bitching to their leadership to get PHs. If you went to medical for your shrapnel wounds and they filled out all the paperwork for your PH without you having to beg for it- that’s not something to be ashamed of.
I know. I just still look at the “price” paid by others as far higher. But your comments above on the awards system are totally correct. The notion of the “end of tour” award and the loss in value of individual accomplishments does the entire military a disservice.
Yep, definitely PTS….he dropped his pencil off his desk and the sound of it hitting the floor was deafening!! 😉
Hook him up to the number three catapult and launch. I’ll accept that in place of jail time.
Fucking shitbag.
Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau is a failure as a man.

Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau is a sell-out.
Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau ought to be keel-hauled – on an aircraft carrier.

Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau is a self-centered self-pitying loser.
Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau is abusing the service dog by his mere existence.
Just seeing if I copy that correctly, you say:

IMHO his bogus PH makes Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau John “Lurch” Kerry JUNIOR.
but. but, but………….. Lurch had three PHs one even required a bandaid. of course his filmcrew caught all the action between beers and smokes.
That’s a clear copy API.
Sorry for the comm lag.
So what you guys are trying to say is:

Ok..I think I get it now.
Nothing triggers my PTSD quicker than some pussy prancing around with a service doggy and making a spectical out of themselves.
Alexa loves me, unless my credit card expires at Amazon. And here I was always told you can’t buy love.
A “spectacle” even! 😉
Hope the Viet of the Nam hookers were worth it, douchebag…
I hope he caught a triple case of GonosyphoherpAIDSclap off them.
I’m hoping that he picked up the resistant syphilis, resistant clap, the crabs, lice, TB, and every stinking bug in Afghanistan crawled up his ass and built himself a really nice little home !!!
There is was Deep in the Vietnamese bush when all of a sudden I had to pay up and only had a Government Travel card and a couple thousand in bribes.
What is a sell out supposed to do?
Sad to say, I can see my pos brother using this as a defense if he is ever arrested for his phony Purple Heart and the rest of his phony PTSD bullshit. I’m sure he suffers great stress living with all of the lies he has sprung on the VA and the public in general? I say phuck this asshole! As well as my pos brother!!
If he wasn’t a 1 star when he was in Iraq, that PH is what got him the star.
According to his Linked In, he’s “In transition after retiring from US Navy.” It also shows that he was in Afghanistan from Jun 12 – Sep 13. Do you think that he managed the time there without his therapy dog, but now the dog is suddenly a necessity in the hopes that it will prevent his lying, cheating, scum ass out of prison?
What a f*cking pile of used arse-wipe tissues! PTSD,for every one that truly suffers from it, there are 3 who falsely claim it,IMHO. I remember the shrink at the VA trying to get me to say I had it, practically begging me to. INTENSIVE psychiatric help for what? How about stuck sitting in a port-a-john, not once but 3 mornings in a row, during a mortar attack? Talk about stress…do I show some dignity and sit through it or do I run out with my shorts around the ankles to safety? At least after the 3rd attack I received a standing ovation when I exited said port-a-john from my fellow SNCOs. If only throat punching wasn’t illegal…
If only I had been there… with a camera… 🙂
Apparently, there is an upside and downside to PTSD…I guess he got the upside…
insert appropriate Spaceballs joke…
Ex-OS2…if you don’t mind, I’d like to take this one.
COCKSUCKER!
KA-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
Shack!
And he looks like a meat gazer as well.
This jabroni’s tale reminds me of the scene in “From Here to Eternity” where the general has learned of Capt Holmes’ using his NCO’s to try to bully Pvt Pruitt into joining the regimental boxing team. The general said, “The first thing I learned in the Army is that an officer takes care of his men. That seems to be the first thing that you forgot.”
Geez, I get the paytayessdee just from putting up with da stoopid carping crap coming out of that leafless twig in lalaland!
I have comfort cats. They never come when I call them. They never acknowledge the slavework I do to get good food for them. They sneeze and eat catnip and leave hair everywhere.
At least I know they care.
Get him a service dog.
IMHO Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau is little more than another John “Lurch” Kerry in his quest to bawl for a bogus PH. And NOW he bawls that “PTSD made him do it”, I hope he gets cornholed at least three times a day by Bubba, Thor and Company.
That’s a ton of cockmeat sammiches and ghey whey shakes for Bobby to snarf down while at the BTJT Deli… plus the opportunities for Anal Dilation Therapy sessions and the Prison football team.
Enjoy prison without your “therapy dog” ROBERT J. GILBEAU… you earned it!
Doc,
Wouldn’t it be great if ‘prison’ for this guy turned out to be the BRIG at Camp Lejeune?
That would be nice… but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is one of those “country club” minimum security places.
You guys keep forgetting to mention “Stretch Sticklebun”…
From what I hear, the name fits or will fit in this pukes asshole after a few weeks !!!
He’s a horndog cuzzov his PTSD? Wow, if only I had PTSD… I thought I just liked girls.
This clown reminds me of my father, who was worried that since he did not have a Purple Heart he might not be able to be buried in Arlington. Turned out he actually did get lightly wounded once, shell fragment left him with a nifty scar across his neck – since it went across a mole he told the doc to finish cutting out the mole, stitch him up, and get him back to his unit. Never reported it… that is the difference between WWII and this clown.
The General & Admiral protection society still going strong. Reportedly the first serving GOFO ever to get sent to the stockade. Still, a relatively light slap on the wrist. This Dbag still collects a pension at reduced rank of Captain, and ok he has to pay 150K in fines & gets an OTH discharge. Maybe the real punishment is getting PNG’d & not being able to land a cushy 6 figure defense related gig.
So if he DIDN’T have PTSD, we’re supposed to believe he wouldn’t have succumbed to criminal behavior?
Bullshit.
This guy’s act is just so damned pathetic and weak that it’s laughable.
He’s a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, so he should man up and behave like one. (One wonders what Admiral Bull Halsey or Admiral Chester Nimitz would think about all of this nonsense…)
How many times did he stand there throwing the ‘knife hand’ and barking at his sailors about inconsequential bullshit, and now he needs a fluffy little white therapy dog to sit in his lap simply because he heard a mortar round go ‘boom’?
Hell, if that’s all it takes to push someone off the deep end into a raging, incapacitating case of The PTSD, then most of the actual combat veterans that I know should probably be sedated and wrapped up in straight-jackets.
PTSD. My dyin’ ass.
This guy is an embarrassment.
* Sorry about the double post.

I need his ‘therapy dog’ just reading this PTSD bullshit story made my blood pressure rise 20 points.
Jonn: You have a story re a dog on today’s Feel Good Stories. Seems a guy was caught while boning a neighbor’s dog. Maybe you could suggest to the judge to allow that guy to care for the admiral’s fluffy white mutt while he is in the slammer.
The admiral decided to further disgrace himself publically with claims of PTSD in an attempt to mitigate his sentence. Maybe he felt he had nothing to lose?
BS – Guy got in with Fat Leonard in 1990’s.
Gets his phony PH and catches the PTSTD in 2007.
Yeah, the Deployment made me do it….
WTH! The Navy is letting him retire as an O-6? If he knew Fat Leonard for over 20 years, he probably should have been knocked down several ranks lower and hit with a huge fine via UCMJ.
For what he did? Tie him to a post and shoot him.
Different rank, different spank?
Darn right. SR snuffy goes to mast. ADM Bilgerat goes to the mast with a cigarette and blindfold.
We are doing it backwards! With predictable results.
What I want to know is whether he gets to take his “therapy” dog to Leavenworth? If so, do Bubba, Tiny and Thor like dogs? If the dog is allowed, will he become famous as the Dog Man of Leavenworth, like the Birdman on Alcatraz? So many unanswered questions arise from this story.
While I can’t sit in judgement of someone else’s mental health condition. Lord knows I struggle with PTSD and MDD. I do get confused by the fact that in therapy we are told that by taking ownership for our lives and actions is one way we can start to heal. Then I find out that folks can get their bad paper discharges upgraded because the PTSD made them bad troops. There is a serious disconnect there Seems to me as if the military is taking personal responsibility out of the equation .
Whenever I see when a high ranking officer that’s basically an office bitch get a purple heart and a bronze star I take it with a grain of salt.
Looks like he spent a lot of the taxpayer’s time and money attending military schools and universities to pad his resume for when he retired.
Hes a crooked cock smoker who thankfully, never held a command billet.
For the life of me I don’t see how this guy can leave service with any benefits … no VA, no retirement, no NADA. He’ll milk the PTSD into service connection. Imagine a tough former flag going into the VA with his cute little fluffy service dog? Yeah, me either.
I can see him with fluffy and wearing a pink tutu.
Funny how the Big Shots turn into sniveling twits when it’s their ass. How about, just one time, “Yes, I did it. I deserve to be punished and I will accept without reservation whatever sentence is pronounced.”
Shoot Straight you bastards. Don’t make a mess of it.

It had to be the strawberries that did him in. He knew somebody gave him away. He had them at the strawberries… he could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt…there was a duplicate phone with his number on it… but it was Fat Leonard who torpedoed him… yeah, that was it… it was Fat Leonard….
