Rhode Island State House; Keggers & Shots

Freshman Representative Moira Walsh (D- Providence) joined Matt Allen on WPRO to talk about a wide range of issues – including minimum wage and women’s issues. It was a comment at the end of the hour long interview, however, that has garnered attention.
When asked by Allen what she found most surprising at the State House, Walsh said, “The drinking. It is the drinking that blows my mind. You can not operate a motor vehicle when you’ve had two beers but you can make laws that effect people’s lives forever when you’re half in the bag? That’s outrageous!”
That’s outrageous! Really? Hahahahahaha. cough. cough. Hahahahaha. Make laws half in the bag? Hahahahaha. Hey Moira, have you ever heard of Ted “went back to bed” Kennedy?
Rep Walsh – “Insane amount of drinking” at the State House
UPDATE: Rep Walsh shocked by ‘insane’ boozing at Rhode Island capitol
A new state lawmaker said she’s surprised by the “insane amount of drinking” that goes on in the State House.
Providence Democratic Rep. Moira Walsh told WPRO’s Matt Allen on Tuesday that lawmakers have “file cabinets full of booze.” She described how they recently took shots on the floor of the House of Representatives to celebrate Dominican Republic Independence Day.
Legislative leaders late Tuesday sought to dismiss her claims of rampant drinking, with Democratic House Majority Leader Joseph Shekarchi telling the Providence Journal he has never seen anyone intoxicated on the floor or impaired while voting.
But it’s not uncommon for Rhode Island legislators to have toasts of alcohol during celebratory occasions. One of the biggest is next week ahead of St. Patrick’s Day. Nor are Rhode Island lawmakers alone in drinking on the job, though some other states have sought to curb the practice.
In Massachusetts, late-night antics ultimately forced a rules change essentially banning the House of Representatives from meeting past midnight. A Missouri lawmaker last year proposed legislation banning smoking and alcohol in the Statehouse. And a pattern of drunken-driving arrests of California lawmakers led the legislature to provide them free after-hours transportation, though the free rides were ended in 2015 in an attempt to restore public trust.
She said last year that “one of the things I’m personally very concerned about is I’ve heard rumors that there’s drinking during sessions. I don’t imagine that’s going to go over well with me.” She also said as “a low-income single mother” she was bothered that too much is decided at late-night dinner meetings where some legislators commiserate.
Joking with Allen on Tuesday about the possibility of a police checkpoint outside the legislators’ parking lot, Walsh said, “I’m going to be the person who ruined drinking at the State House. They’ll love me forever.”
I guess low-income single mothers are the only ones who are bothered by wink and nod politics. Silly me. Good luck District 3.
UPDATE: Rep Walsh shocked by ‘insane’ boozing at Rhode Island capitol
Here is a little more about Moira:
Walsh told the radio station that it all started with a posting she made on social media just before Christmas saying “all my holiday cheer is for women, femmes and trans. The rest of you boys can kick rocks.”
Her advocacy for raising the tipped minimum wage and her candid talk about her struggles as a waitress and 26-year-old single parent have attracted wide attention, including a profile on The Atlantic’s website.
“Did my comments make men uncomfortable? Clearly,” she said Thursday. “Social change comes at the price of comfort, and if you’re agitated, it means it’s working.”
Rhode Island legislator says she was fired by restaurant for political talk
Category: Politics
Well thank god for the naïve in the world. They hold onto the innocence most of us lost long ago.
For me, this is my shocked face. Drinking at the State House.
If Voting Undet the Influence (VUI) or Voting While Intoxicated (VWI) were an arrestable offense A LOT MORE Politicians would be getting jailed on a regular basis.
Just look at Marion Barry and his spontaneous news conferences on the local news channels while he was mayor.
“[A]ll my holiday cheer is for women, femmes and trans. The rest of you boys can kick rocks.” I’m sure her male constituency is pleased. As for the adult beverage consumption, most legislators could probably do with more drinking, not less. I am sure she has endeared herself to her colleagues and will soon by whining about the committee reassignments. That will happen as soon as this femme/trans cheerleader flap blows over.
Her popularity with male hipsters most likely skyrocketed.
Is it just me, or does this public servant exude the aura of the attention whore? her being a politician, I understand the point is moot, but she doth protest a bit much.
No, it’s not just you. She is and my guess is that she will soon be responding to “Order up!” again soon enough. Wanna bet she took the day off in support of whatever it is some women are protesting today?
But its okay to do that, she’s being paid by the taxpayers.
She’s another one who’d be perfectly fine with having no men in any position of power anywhere I’m sure.
To some extent, IMO all politicians do. That’s generally why they go into politics as a career.
She’s shocked???? Well, I’m shocked that she’s shocked!!! (snerrrkkk!)
So, is anyone forcing her to participate? No? Fired for spouting political rhetoric… sorry, no sympathies, but I’m still laughing.
Grow up, Moira.
Ex, don’t you think she would fit right in with good old Brucie Jenner? I’m sorry, but he still has his frank and beans, so to me he is just a very bad cross dresser!
“I’m sorry, but he still has his frank and beans, so to me he is just a very bad cross dresser!”
TRUE. If it’s got a prick, it ain’t a chick!
I noticed that The Atlantic story mentioned that she was an “organizer”… I’m assuming that her professional resume is probably as blank as the JEF’s (“Would you like fries with that?”).
And she’s surprised about the amount of drinking in the state house? It’s probably the only way her fellow reps can function when doing that politiking thing….
I’m guessing that if they were all pulling on joints (the unattached kind–or maybe not) she would not have said squat.
Spot on 2/17 Air Cav.
“A medical marijuana patient, Walsh wants to push for the legalization of the drug, which could open up new job opportunities in her district.”

Given the young representative’s comments, I’m surprised someone hasn’t yet posted this. It just seems apropos. (smile)
Warning: clip may be NSFW/around prudes, clergy, or small children.
I posted the Irish Chorus in the post.
I noticed the “teaser”, ex-OS2. I just thought I’d post a link to the “full Monty”. (smile)
And a fine version to share.
Thank you!
Thin Lizzy’s early-1970s version was also good. But this one just seemed more in keeping with the lady’s complaints. (smile)
Bad-ass for sure.
She knows all about beer goggles.
She plans to ‘make it loud’ to ensure her district isn’t ignored
I am sure she will become a fine momma bear legislator.
And three terms from now, she will have made herself as rich as the rest of her peers managed…….
She probably knows all about doing things while “half in the bag”….she IS a single mother, after all…
Not quit with her on the purpose of minimum wage or the hormon induced over exaggerated rant on women’s issue, but I agree with about the consumption of alcohol while on the job. I can’t believe most of you all are not outraged either…
Outrage is reserved for other things, not uppity women speaking the truth.
Dahell do we care if Senator X and Representative Y knock down a few?
I do believe this woman exemplifies the expression, “Turd in the punch bowl”.
Good for her, the statehouse in RI and MA could both use some shaking up with some new blood that has ambition to actually make a difference. Instead of drunken legislation to benefit the rich and famous a few pieces of legislation designed to take the load off the working poor might be just the ticket for a state that relies on those workers heavily as part of its tourism industry…instead of creating a tax free haven for wealthy boat owners perhaps charging those boat owners an appropriate tax rate would mean the working poor and middle class didn’t have to subsidize the lost revenue. I’m no fan of welfare for anyone and that includes people like me who can afford to spend thousands on a marina each year…if you can afford tens of thousands for a boat you can afford the sales tax or else maybe you shouldn’t be buying a luxury item like a yacht…Rhode Island allowed John Kerry to dodge his tax responsibility for his purchase.
It’s funny that she makes a comment about men and everyone is talking shit about her while I see a great many people defending the Marines caught up in their asshattery over naked pictures…there’s an entertaining irony in there as usual, everybody loves free speech until it hits their triggers, then not so much.
She thinks the good old boys club at the state house is filled with men who lack a true sense of responsibility while engaging in drunken shenanigans…and she’s spot on. What the future holds remains to be seen, but this isn’t a bad thing for Rhode Island.
My guess is she ends up out and not getting anything done because she will alienate those she needs to get the work done…but in the interim the uncomfortable exposure is just the ticket.
She’s a “medical marijuana patient”, VOV. Good chance she’s showing up to work at least half-stoned hereself, just using a different chemical means.
Do you really think someone who’s half-stoned thinks more clearly than someone who’s had a few drinks?
To me, her complaining about the behavior of anyone using a legal intoxicant while she’s a “medical marijuana patient” herself and can’t seem to control her own behavior worth a damn kinda reeks of hypocrisy. But maybe that’s just me.
Maybe it’s just us.
Probably not a great idea to start off in life throwing those whose cooperation you need publicly under the bus…
Loved the response of the legislative head who said “I don’t see the drinking” – had a platoon sergeant like that once, who didn’t want to see alcohol in the barracks. Upon seeing a young PFC carrying out an overflowing trash can full of Ripple bottles, he said “are those all empty?” and when that was confirmed, said “good, I’m not seeing any alcohol. Carry on.”
Moira was assigned to two committees in January, shortly after she was sworn in. There would have been a third but the “I-Hate-Men-Except-if-They-Are-Femme-or-Trans Committee” hasn’t been formed yet. Want to guess one of her two actual committees? [Insert Jeopardy music here] Ready? Veterans’ Affairs. BTW, she got canned from her waitress job for spilling her political soup all over customers.
” as “a low-income single mother” ”
Instead of feeding her ego in a low-paying political job perhaps she should find a better paying job. And where, by he way, is the father?
My patience with those who think a child only needs one part-time parent has been exhausted.
She can’t even afford sleeves, which, with her build, she desperately needs.
