Dissertation research again

Emily Burris

Our buddy, Emily Burris, wants to thank you guys for helping her with her research on OIF/OEF veterans with PTSD. She’s back with a request for more help;

Hello,

My name is Emily Burris and I am a 6th year clinical psychology PhD student out of Alliant International University-San Diego, and an Army Active Duty psychology intern at Fort Sam Houston. I am currently completing my dissertation research, under the advisement of Dr. Donald Viglione, on psychological assessment and the assessment accuracy of PTSD. I am seeking the help of veterans to participate in this study. Research often relies on individuals who do not have the disorder. Veterans are eligible if they deployed in support of OIF/OEF/OND and do not have a history of PTSD. Participation is completed online via live web conferencing and participants will be compensated $15 for 60-90 minutes, with a chance to win $200, $100, or $50 based on their performance in the study. I have attached my institutions IRB approval letter along with my approved recruitment flyer. I would greatly appreciate it if you could spread the word about my study to your local student veterans! Interested Veterans can contact me at eburris(at)alliant(dot)edu or 419-819-0470

Don’t. Even. Start. You. Cretinous. Miscreants.

26Limabeans

At first glance I thought she was Castro’s great granddaughter.

Ex-PH2

If she wants to be taken seriously, she’s going to have to grow a mustache or something.

Grimmy

This is where the feministists are wrong.

It’s not an either/or zero sum game between pretty and competent for women. That’s an idiocy women invented themselves.

This young lady is pretty. True Fact. Whether or not she’s competent is an entirely different judgement. The one does not preclude or disqualify the other.

Ex-PH2

Oh, Grimmy, you give me hope for the future. You truly do.

OC

Grimmy is just sucking up to ya, Ex……. 😉

26Limabeans

It’s the epaulets. I’m a sucker for epaulets.

If I wasn’t happily married right now, I would be having fantasies about her tying me up and paddling me like I was a naughty schoolboy.

jarhead

A P I…with the epaulets on her olive-colored blouse, as 26Limabeans pointed out, somewhere on that shelf behind her is a box of cat-o-nine-tails just waiting to show a little discipline to any reprobate in need.

A Proud Infidel®™

I was thinking of her in tight-fitting skirt and blouse, stiletto heeled leather boots while spanking me with a wooden paddle for starters…

A Proud Infidel®™

Then a game of “Bad Schoolboy and the Naughty Librarian”…

MSG Eric

She must be a 2LT, I get lost in her eyes.

Ex-PH2, I’m apologizing in advance.

Yes. Yes I would. Smart ladies just do that to me.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Let’s support this hard charger.

Pass the word to active, reserve and retired.

Out!

MSG Eric

I helped her with the study. Wasn’t too difficult and fairly interesting what she was doing. I’d say it is definitely something to help with. I passed this along to a few friends and whatnot.

The fact she’s hot is irrelevant to the study, but it helps pass the time. (had to throw something in there like that.)

Ex-PH2

Of course you did. You would not be human if you didn’t.

I’d like to know if she’s getting any women to respond to this study.

MSG Eric

Yes.

However, she’s still in need because she isn’t getting as many total subjects as she’d like for the study. I have a few former Soldiers that have PTSD so I’m fairly supportive of what she is doing here and why.

She did laud This ain’t hell as one of the very few that were responsive and supportive of the study.

Ex-PH2

This time she wants people who do not have PTSD as a control group. People do get paid for participating in those research programs.

jarhead

This one I am forced to deal with and publicly piss off who knows how many. And do I give a shit? Not no, but hell no!

Earn $15 for a 60-90 minute interview….are you certain this is not some kind of time share sales pitch? It really grates my ass to see…a “chance to WIN $50-$200 “based on your PERFORMANCE”. What follows this study…awards from MTV?

I call bogus bullshit with a script likely created by one disbarred atty in South Florida. The added PERFORMANCE INCENTIVE makes a mockery of anything legit. Take a minute to talk to the shrinks who facilitate PTSD Group meetings which occur normally every month.

jarhead

Taking a second look at this…would someone on here PLEASE explain to me just how the hell one does a study on PTSD if the persons interviewed DO NOT have PTSD to begin with?

Sounds like a study seeking the input of those who enjoy bowling from people who have never set foot in a bowling alley. Now does that make any sense?

jarhead. She could call the payments stipends and refer to participants as patients or volunteers. There are thousands of such med/psych/pharm studies going on year round. Some pay extra for certain blood types, medical conditions and risks. It’s an underground industry and it is competitive. What this PhD candidate is seeking is a very select–and difficult to acquire–group of Veterans. It’s legit.

Your second question goes most likely to a control group or seeks to suggest answers as to why Vet X, who served alongside Veteran Y, does not suffer PTSD but Veteran Y does.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Dagnabbit, perhaps you’re correct we are closer in our thoughts than I realized….

Ex-PH2

Exactly. She’s looking for a group of people who were in the same kind of setting who did not develop or experience PTSD as a result of being there. She gets a grant for the research, which includes the stipend to pay subjects of the study.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

More like a control group jarhead…when you study those who’ve ostensibly dealt with the effects of PTSD, if you study those with similar experiences who don’t later become affected by PTSD it’s possible you might discover coping mechanisms used by the latter that will positively impact the former. Or you might discover it’s more the luck of the draw. Without datasets from a non-affected group though it’s less likely to discover actual beneficial treatment options as you are limited to a data set of affected individuals only.

At least that would be my understanding of the necessity of a non-affected control group.

Dysfunctional veteran

I took the study and got paid, as promised. She’s asking veterans to try to juke the performance measures so she can accurately determine if the frauds this site reports on so often would be able to scam the test into reporting a PTSD-diagnosis. The participants best able to fool her performance measures can win the prizes. It’s legitimate research and your unqualified opinion isn’t helping.

MSG Eric

As I stated in my previous post, it isn’t bullshit. It is a worthwhile study.

The monetary offer is an incentive to get more volunteers to sign-up and help. Though a few of us told her not to worry about the 15 bucks, she still said she’d donate it to a charity.

The questions you get asked will provide categorization of your experience for her study.

If you don’t want to do it, then don’t. Simple as that. Don’t get your panties in a bunch over it.

MSG Eric

Sometimes I think people here don’t even read what I post, as if I’m too long-winded or something.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Do I detect a bit of sarcasm for those of us who actually leaves walls of text here regularly?

I read your words bro, and it all makes sense to me.

MSG Eric

I’m not sure what you are referring to Senator….

Veritas Omnia Vincit

That would be Mr. Blutarski to you…

2/17 Air Cav

Some people read only their own posts. There is no excuse for it unless there are 100+ comments. I have made comments that duplicated others’ comments that way and, more often than I’d like, I leave my comment window open too long and find, when I submit the comment, that someone already said what I wrote. I read your stuff. Only Lars merits a bypass unless –and this rare–it’s short.

MSG Eric

It is interesting how often we say similar things, or have the same endstate idea, just in a different means format.

Could be why I’ve been visiting this site since I found it in 2012 in Afghanistan because of SSG Cambodia who claimed to be there to Stars and Stripes.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Some folks love their own words as much as their own voice AC….it’s why there are so many echo chambers online…they say something and dozens of other like minded folks repeat the same viewpoint with slightly altered wordings…that’s fine I guess, but it gets dull quickly. I prefer to state what I think and either get to write back and forth or get banned however it works out is all good with me…the sites that let me be whatever it is that I am (like this one) are where I tend to stay and read the most…

Although, like Claymore, I must confess that I’ve managed to remain under deep cover at DU for several years now, after being booted several times within a few minutes or hours previously…I am running a decent undercover operation over there right now and having some fun trolling the DUmmies.

Ex-PH2

I read the responses to what I post, ditto the articles I’ve submitted, but that’s to find out if I’m making sense or just babbling. You can think you’re quite clear on something, and then find that you’re not.

Sparks

Ms. Burris, here’s to your successful completion of your doctoral dissertation. Thank you for serving and thank you for your concern for helping veterans with PTS. Keep up the great work. Please keep us posted about your progress.

David

Thank God she is legit and headed for her doctorate… maybe that will stop me once again from thinking about her taking her hair loose, removing her glasses, swinging her perfect locks around to fall neatly framing her soft features and in a throaty whisper murmuring …. ‘yes, I am headed for my doctorate and you can drop that crap right now.’

Nothing says a bright lady can’t be pretty…

SFC D

David, kindly remove yourself from my fantasy…

David

Hey, I was there first….

“A Touch of Mink” with Cary Grant, Doris Day, and Gig Young: Gig Young asks his secretary to let her hair down, shake it loose, and take her glasses off: she’s blind as a bat, peering nearsightedly at him displaying a heck of an overbite, and he goes “funny, it always worked in the movies!”

MSG Eric

Who are Cary Grant and Doris Day?

jarhead

By now you know this is not Lars with his argumentative style ridiculing everyone who does not agree. Opinions are like hobby horses who have wooden assholes. Everybody either has one or has had one. My opinion may differ, but every one of yours is respected.
David’s PhD better hang on to her drawers.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Never thought that of you on this end bro, I welcome contrary opinions as I’m sort of a contrarian myself…your questions were legitimate questions to ask…I do appreciate the clarification, but no worries with me anyway.

jarhead

Much obliged V O V.

Grimmy

Has Lars been stealing my schtick?!!

I’m gonna go to my steward in the Asshats’ Union over this. Their enforcer goons don’t fuck around.

26Limabeans

I recall a study proposed by the VA about ten years ago that wanted the brothers of PTSD veterans to participate in something similar to this. Brothers that did not serve. I don’t think it went far for obvious reasons but lately there is a mailing from the VA for something similar. Yo Emily, feel free to jump in here.
