Spotting Veterans Fundraising Scams
Indulge me for a minute while I quote from this old article. My intentions will be made clear in a minute;
It seems like everywhere you look these days, there’s a sketchy character with a sub-regulation haircut and 5 o’clock shadow and standing on a median at a traffic light, carrying a bucket of cash, and wearing ACUs with patches removed and usually the wrong kind of boots.
They’ll say they’re collecting money for veteran’s organizations and charities. I’ve never given them a cent, and it turns out my suspicions may have been justified:
Acting on a tip earlier this month, law enforcement traced a suspect to a bar in Portland, Oregon. He was wanted in Ohio for embezzling up to $100 million in charitable donations, which he collected primarily from Navy veterans. The scam is an old one: Analysts refer to it as “affinity fraud.” This is a common form of fraud in which the criminal gains the victims’ trust by exploiting supposed commonalities – a shared racial, ethnic or religious heritage, membership in the same church, or in this case, an affiliation with the military and veterans.
Bobby Thompson – an alias (authorities still aren’t certain of the suspect’s real name), is accused of stealing millions in small contributions, mostly to the U.S. Navy Veteran’s Association, a legitimate charity in Tampa, Florida. The alleged crime spanned some 40 states. Donors thought their donations – often from $5 to $50 – were going to help needy veterans. Instead, prosecutors say, they simply lined Thompson’s pockets.
Someone cut and pasted the above article about Bobby Thompson, the convicted valor thief who stole from so many people. “Someone” edited the article and replaced Bobby Thompson name and location with one of “our friends'” names in an attempt to interfere with the launch of a new charity, because “someone” hates to see people become successful – because he can’t be successful. I’m surprised that he can get out of bed in the morning, actually.
Actually, “our friend” beat “someone” in court again today and “our friend” was awarded thousands in court costs from “someone”. That was in Virginia. Last week, “someone” lost to “our friend” in Maryland. I tell you all of that because apparently “someone” isn’t telling his minions the truth. They’re banking on a piece of the pie;
Disbarred doesn’t mean “retired”.

In this case he isn’t even a competent editor. “Someone” went to the trouble of editing the article to make it appear to be about Chief Shipley and then went and left Thompson’s name in there a few sentences later. You’d read the article ostensibly about he of the awesome hair and then end up wondering who “Thompson” was.
“Someone” is no better an editor than he is an attorney or airplane fuel gauge reader.
However-and I just noticed this-the edit of Dallas’ mugshot is teh awesome!
That “I got caught with a APL-approved Phildo up my butt” look always gets me laughing when I see his mugshot…
He put as much intelligent effort into editing that article as he does in editing his court filings. And to think he was a Notary at one time.

Well, that poltroon named Daniel A. Bernath DOES have his things bought and registered in his wife and daughter’s names, the registered “owner” of the plane he wrecked was his daughter who is rumored to have disowned him (Bernath DID once have his Law License suspended for failure to pay child support), I wouldn’t blame them a bit if they cleaned him out and left him on his ass sans even a pot to piss in!
The State Bar Court full decision is in pdf on his page on the State Bar website. They wasted quite a bit of ink on him. The Supreme Court decision is only a one page order accepting the the Bar Court recommendation that he be disbarred and ordering him disbarred. I read the actual disbarment order somewhere online.
Words like “competent”, “successful”, “intelligent”, “fuel”, and “brain” mean nothing to “someone”.
That’s an easy payday for Shipley. Where was that tortious piece of work published?

It might just be an internal self preservation mechanism that ensures he only tries his shit on people who will respond with restraint and in a legal manner.

I am just curious as to why this isn’t actionable. Clearly the statements are false, and made with malice.
Florida is not like other states. There is a criminal penalty for libel if it meets the normal libel criteria. You get a record and everything for your trouble.
I know people have said in the past that someone has no money and has everything in someone else’s name, but Florida doesn’t care. The fine can be deferred to what the statutes say is “time certain,” but it has to be paid at that time. Period.
He should have been busted for his phony website full of strange propaganda if that’s the case.
Depends. It’s my layperson’s understanding that a debtor who cannot afford to pay a court-mandated fine cannot be incarcerated, as per Bearden v. Georgia; decided by SCOTUS on May 24, 1983.

What’s kind of funny is that it looks like the smartest guy in this whole bag of asshats is Phil Monkress, the fake SEAL. Psul, Lawn Dart Danny, and Witless have all taken it in the ass while Phil kept his mouth shut and let them draw the attention. Psul isn’t working for Phil and had to try a start up which is being sued, and he isn’t residing at his old address. Danny is now a disbarred lawyer with a litany of judgments against him who has been legally bared from filing suits without an attorney, and is apparently suffering from some sort of paranoid delusions. Witless didn’t have much to lose, but he did get the big boot from the Special Forces Association. This is exactly why Bobo Jr. has been taught to be a leader, not a follower.
I’m guessing that soon some member of law enforcement will be knocking on one or two doors to ask about a hacking incident. That should about seal the deal. Well played, gentlemen, well played.
