Iranian Capture of 2 US Patrol Craft Ends Yet Another Career

| June 24, 2016

The Iranian capture of two US Navy patrol craft earlier this year has apparently ended another senior Naval officer’s career.

The Navy has announced that CAPT Kyle Moses – Commodore of Commander Task Force (CTF) 56, the parent unit of the patrol boats captured by the Iranians in January – will be relieved of command. As Jonn previously noted some weeks ago, the Commander and former Executive Officer of the squadron involved, CDR Eric Rasch, has already been relieved.

Fox News has an article giving more details concerning CAPT Moses’ relief.  It’s IMO worth a read.

The Fox article indicates that a “multitude of errors” led to the patrol boats seizure by Iranian forces.  The errors described in that article clearly indicate that the unit suffered from inadequate training and that supervision was lacking.

It further indicates that additional personnel are likely to face disciplinary action and/or administrative sanctions due to the incident.  However, those individuals have not yet been publicly identified.

Looks like the Navy may actually be doing a decent investigation of this one after all.

Someone had to be held accountable. Hopefully they relieved the right guy responsible for all the errors during this particular mission. That being said Iran has done a good job through the years capturing soldiers trying to infiltrate their territory. I believe they have caught Royal Marines among others through the years. Sepah has been a good unit for them.

The episode was nothing but a soup sandwich. Sounds, per Fox, that they simply got into their boats and took off. No preplanning, no nothing. Piss poor leadership.

Chip

I rarely had good leadership during my time in service. I hear it is worst now.

LT: Helmsman come about, No Sir.

Many times I cringe when I see the hatchet fall on Military personnel after an “oops”, but in this instance, to paraphrase CPT Brody: “we’re gonna need some more hatchets.”

Okay now. You brothers and sisters of the wetter service please help out an old grunt in understanding these titles and ranks. “CAPT Kyle Moses – Commodore of Commander Task Force (CTF) 56”

I know Navy Captain is the same as and Army Full Colonel. Though I have heard the rank Commodore, I did not know it was still used. I get the Task Force number but what gives with this rank please?

Rerun0369

Commodore = Commander of a Task Force

Normally it is the Senior Captain in said Task Force who is given command. The individual still holds the rank of Captain, but the title of Commodore to help distinguish him/her from fellow captains within the Task Force. So, commodore is not actually a rank, more of a command billet.

Thank you very much my friend.
