Shocker! NY residents aren’t registering their rifles
The New York Daily News reports that fewer than 45,000 New Yorkers have registered their scary-looking black guns out of an estimated million actual modern sporting rifles in the State.
“What these numbers expose is that, if there are people who are wilfully [sic] ignoring the law, that means tens of thousands of gun owners are not complying with a law that is supported by New Yorkers,” said Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, citing a May poll commissioned by her group that showed state residents support key provisions of the SAFE Act.
Under New York law, failure to register an assault weapon by the April 2014 deadline can be treated as misdemeanor offense, punishable by “forfeiture of the weapon” and up to one year in jail, according to the New York State Police.
Under a different statute, the situation can also be treated as a low-level felony, punishable by up to four years in prison.
Yeah, well, the governor and the legislature made them criminals with a swipe of their pens in the dead of the night, like they were hiding something. I hope they are more than a little discomforted by that thought while they try to sleep at night. The article continues that local law enforcement has been less than willing to enforce the Legacy Governor’s law.
In fact, several local police departments and county sheriffs, mostly in pockets of upstate New York where hunting is popular, have been accused of not enforcing parts of the SAFE Act and refusing to encourage local residents to register their assault weapons because their officers were opposed to the law.
According to The New York Times, several upstate towns and villages have even passed resolutions denouncing the law.
When the paper that pays Gersh Kuntzman a living wage tried to get a statement from the Legacy Governor, he deflected their questions to the state police – they didn’t respond either.
I’d say that New York State is in rebellion – I wouldn’t recommend to the Legacy Governor that he try to take extreme measures to enforce his ill-considered laws or he might find out what a real rebellion looks like.

The Legacy Governor, and others of his gun-grabbing, anti-Constitution persuasion aren’t listening to us.
King George III didn’t listen either. Things didn’t turn out so well for him and his Parliament.
The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers. – Princess Leia.
I cannot imagine living in a state where I would be expected to register my weapons. I wonder when they will have carpenters register hammers? butchers register knives, plumbers register pipe wrenches…
I’m more concerned about what is following on the heels of this gun business. People can’t post their own opinions on their own web pages, for fear of being outted and fired from their jobs. People can’t run a business unless it’s completely PC, or they will be penalized. The Borg are slowly forcing all of us to play their game, or become some form of criminal. And where do you suppose that’s going to stop?
Read 299 Days. Although a work of fiction written about 12 years ago (if my memory hasn’t failed me again) the SJWs and typical lib pukes used social media to ID conservatives or conservative leaning folks.
Things didn’t turn out too well for the “grabbers” in the book either.
Thank you for the book suggestion! I have the first two books in the series in my eBay watch list.
That is a good question, one that bears discussion. I think it stops when THEY back off.
Well Hold On !!!!!!
it’s in the works before to long you may need to register to breath too..
Silicon Valley had the same response.

It’s nice to see that not everyone in California is a braindead idiot.
Around here, the local resident deputies would be the first to say “fuck that noise” if such a measure was ever implemented. All stereotypes aside, there’s lots of Scary Black Rifles in SoCal, and none of us are particularly interested in giving them up.
Isn’t that where you have the bullet buttons to make it fire fully auto? /sarc
Less than a 5 percent response rate? Isn’t that about the same level of compliance that they had in CT?
Yep. And the geniuses that crafted the CT AWB (PA 13-3/SB 1160) left pre-’94 weapons untouched and do not have to be registered. The market has gone through the roof.
It makes me think, who’s sitting on those pre-bans…
If found to have a proper title of an elected official I see the ‘metaphorical’ tar and feathers coming out.
‘he might find out what a real rebellion looks like….’ Yes, indeed. This is where it starts.
Hondo will correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it the Redcoats that went around to citizens’ homes, confiscating their personal weapons?
And isn’t that the reason we have the 2nd Amendment in the US Constitution?
The Brits were on their way to do just that when the Battle of Lexington intervened.
Thanks for the heads up!
It was a “little” bit more than just personal weapons there, but , yeah… basically.
As I recall, they were going to grab everything that could sling any kind of metal downrange. This included small arms and privately-owned artillery (not unusual in that day and age).
And some sources say that the British CO, Major John Pitcairn of the Royal Marines, considered his orders immoral and was obeying under protest.
I should add that I’m waiting for someone to sue the pants off Mayor Rahmbo, the City of Chicago et al, and Cook County et al, after getting robbed at gunpoint, because it’s going to happen. Not everyone who lives in Chicago is a fool.
Take a look at As If an Enemy’s Country: The British Occupation of Boston and the Origins of Revolution by Richard Archer. He goes into the mindset of the Boston Citizens due to their interactions with the British soldiers.
The reason for the 2nd amendment goes back almost 100 years before the war of independence to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The English Bill of Rights actually contains a right to bear arms:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_of_Rights_1689
The reason for this was because during the religious wars of the 17th Century it was not uncommon for the government to disarm the disfavored religion (Protestantism usually) and then stand by and do nothing while armed Catholic brigands and mercenaries ran amok and caused slaughter, raping and pillaging, etc.
The EBOR also contains a provision that prohibits the establishment of a standing army during peacetime without the consent of Parliament, for much the same reason.
This mistrust of standing armies and the desire to maintain a colonial Militia that is made up of the free people is at the root of the US Constitution’s 2nd amendment.
Goes back farther than that, Martinjmpr.
In the Americas, the Massachusetts colony prescribed a requirement for all able-bodied males to possess arms (and serve as required for colony defense) as early as 1630. And in England itself, the Assize of Arms dates to 1181 and specifies much the same requirement in even more detail.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assize_of_Arms_of_1181
http://www.history.army.mil/reference/mamil/Mamil.htm
Both of those truths are highly inconvenient for those who claim that the 2nd Amendment apply only to the
“organized militia” and doesn’t include the right of personal ownership.
A nice little “fuck you very much” from the good people of New York. I like it.
You could’ve posted this as an addendum to the Wednesday Morning Feel Good Stories, it warmed the cockles of my heart so much.
That is the most beautiful sentiment to come out of NY in … damn. I’m 39 and can’t remember anything positive coming out of that place in my life time. The gun grabbers in the main cities find out that they aren’t the only ones with voices in the state. Thanks, Mr. Lilyea, for grinding your teeth, reading through this craptastic publication to bring us a heartwarming glimmer of hope. Can’t wait to hear more about how this unfolds.
Gee…civil disobedience can get you a felony, but only if you support the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution.
This country is not a prison camp.
I’m surprised the lady in the article isn’t scared of her own name. Gunn! Barrett! Oh the honor. How brave of her to be executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. I thought every New Yorker was for gun violence. Pfft, sanctimonious twat.
When an armed society is essential to the checks and balances of power in a social contract.
And when the government constantly postures that disarming society is part of the possible political outcomes.
It makes sense that the people would have a healthy distrust of voluntarily telling the government they are armed.
I read the article and it’s better (Cuomo would say it’s worse) than it appears. Only 23,487 individuals in NY registered their guns and they registered 44,485 of them. I will bet dollars to donuts that of those 23,487 New Yorkers, 23,486 work for government and most for LE agencies. As for that difference of one, there’s always one in every crowd.
I suppose that the state will have to make examples of some folks now. The police can take the tag numbers of vehicles parked at ranges or infiltrate the ranges and see who is using what. Then, it’s just a matter of running the tags and then the gun registration database. They will hang a few people and then, afterwards, offer amnesty to the rest, provided they register their guns by a new date certain.
I’d have to disagree with your take on that, AirCav. If you recall last summer, when two convicts did a Shankshaw and left a NY state prison through the plumbing wall, the sheriff encouraged residents of his county to carry weapons with them at all times.
I think the whipped cur attitude only exists where yuppishes inhabit concentrated population groups like NYC and LA and SanFran.
There is a difference between complying with a law and supporting that law. My point is that those whose jobs may be at stake for failing to register their guns largely explains the 23,487 who registered them. Many live on Long Island, in Nassau and Suffolk counties, where many LEOs reside.
The governor and his attorney general just congratulated the Supreme Court the other day for its decision to do nothing regarding state actions on gun control, and also made a comment after the Orlando shootings. Andrew is throwing money around the state in an attempt to bolster his numbers because Albany is so corrupt that the federal arrests of political leaders are coming uncomfortably close to his neck of the woods, and he is feeling the heat. The guy is well known as a man that doesn’t like to be told what to do or disagreed with.
http://www.nysheriffs.org/articles/sheriffs%E2%80%99-response-ny-safe-act
It also says something that the vast majority of both arrests and supporters come from the metro NYC area. The only counties in the state to support it were the NYC/LI area, Albany and the ivy league enclave in Tompkins (Ithaca/Cornell crowd). Supporters tout the increase in arrests, but most of those arrests were in the metro NYC area and would have occurred under existing laws before the SAFE act was passed. Any benefits were lost in my mind when they passed it in the dead of night without any customary review period – Andrew just had to make political hay on the national stage using the deaths of others as an excuse.
I live in Western NY. Lived here most of my life.
The most important thing to remember is that these birkenstock wearing, NPR listening crunchie assholes are concentrated around New York City and Albany to a lesser extent. The rest of the state is basically a 180 degree polar opposite. The rest of NY is mainly agricultural and rural, with a helluva lot more in common with Red states than Blue.
The problem is that the majority of the population of NY State lives in New York City, making the city kids and their pets in Albany the defacto Kings of NY – the amount of representation you receive goes by population, and the population of New York Shitty dwarfs the rest of the state.
The County I live in and most of the other counties around straight out said “Fuck Albany, we won’t enforce the SAFE Act”. I know of literally noone besides LE who has registered their scary black assault weapons. It’s just as easy to get one now as it was before the SAFE Act, everyone has just figured out ways around it. The SAFE Act was nothing but political theater put on by Cuomo to capitalize on the Sandy Hook shooting – that little cocksucker thinks he’s going to be President some day.
/end rant
That sounds an awful lot like the Citystate of Chicago, which seems to consider itself separate from and more important than the State of Illinois.
If these cities want to be that self-important, then perhaps it’s time they declared themselves separate entities from the states they inhabit.
A number of State Assembly and Senate routinely attempt to hold a referendum on splitting NYC off into it’s own separate State.
The massive population imbalance equals a massive representation imbalance, which in turn ensures that nothing of that nature will ever get enough votes to pass unless the NYC hipsters overtighten their skinny jeans some day and decide to do it themselves.
Yeah, Northern Cali has been trying to split the state for decades. Northern Cali folks are, well, just folksie. Great people.
Disclaimer: I don’t live there, just visited several times.
All of the shitty laws we have in Illinois have come out of Chicago. Beautiful city though as long as you stay in the right parts of it. I’m actually surprised they haven’t managed to get more restrictive laws passed in Illinois.
If Chicago breaks off though, they need to take Springfield with them.
…and Decatur.
Oh, you, too?
Yup. From a small town of about 800 souls southeast of Champaign-Urbana.
They should take the State Police with them as well. We are not a fan of having those storm troopers patrolling and setting up road blocks in the rural towns and cities where I am from.
That’s what our city cops and Sheriffs are for.
Dan Madigan thinks that the only city worth the bother in Illinois is Chicago. He hates the rest of the state. He’s had a chokehold on the state legislature for 30 years. He thinks he owns the state. If Chicago and Cook County were separated from the rest of the state of Illinois, Decatur and Springfield and other smaller cities like Bloomington would no longer be sending their taxes to Chicago, because that city gets the majority of state tax money. Rockford and Freeport might have a chance to expand a lot more and open up more jobs, too.
According to the latest news, George Lucas is looking for some other city than Chicago to locate his Jabba the Hutt-ish Star Wars museum. If he takes it out of Cook County, Chicago loses that revenue. That would be priceless.
A lot of similarities with California there. LA, San Francisco, and the handful of other anti-gun enclaves don’t actually have a population majority, but Sacramento is bought and paid for between the two. The rest of the state, which includes San Diego, smaller cities like Fresno, the ag areas of the Central Valley, and the mountains where cattle outnumber humans (where I live) are NOT happy about it. Hell, even LA, cesspool that it is (and I hate that place enough that I’m happy to drive 100 miles out of my way to avoid it), has a pretty strong conservative voter base, but the democrats own it just as they own Chicago or Detroit.
Let’s not forget the Albuquerque/Santa Fe dominance of New Mexico. Same thing.
We have the same thing here in Texas (big liberal enclaves). DFW area, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso. I think the only thing that keeps Texas a red a State is how large it is, the smaller (lots and lots) towns & cities which (my guestimate) out votes by & large the yellow dog democraps.
Register weapons.
Register “immigrants”.
What’s good for the goose….
This news makes me smile…mass disobedience to stupid, overarching, totalitarian edicts is often the most appropriate response.
I also think it’s not just the legal purchases that remain unregistered and hidden, if one has a simple desire to experiment and a bit of an anarchist mindset one can easily build what is called and expedient firearm that works very well and is quite reliable. One does not need a CNC machine or any kind of real skill beyond a basic understanding of mechanical objects and toolsets. A fully automatic 9mm SMG, which is of course highly illegal, can be constructed from basic plumbing pipe and sheet metal. The Chechens used a great many such weapons.
Laws only work so long as the governed agree to abide by them for the most part. It’s time for folks to read Gulag Archipelago again and understand it’s as much cautionary tale as historical documentation.
It seems to me that a skilled craftsman could copy anything.
In the mountains of the southeast Asia, there are such people. They can copy any weapon handed to them, no matter how new or old it is.
STEN guns for everyone!
The problem is that even with low compliance there is no move to repeal the laws. Police may not like the law, but they will happily apply it to those they feel are dirtbags if it is the only thing they can get them on. They will add the charges to other ones, and over time they will not hesitate to check any complaints.
No one is going to go door to door seizing guns. Just when the owner screws up and the police see a banned gun. They don’t care if you buried the gun where they can’t find it, because that does what the goal of the law is – get the evil black gun out of circulation
Spot on.
In NY, it can’t be repealed in the current state of affairs because…. you guessed it. Representation based on population ensures that the NYC hippies and their Albany pets can overturn any attempt by the rest of the State to repeal it.
And you are also spot on about the cops – they won’t actively enforce it, but they won’t hesitate to use it as a tool to nail someone with it if that’s the only thing they can find to charge them with. It’s happened a few times that I can think of already.
Yep, an “unenforceable” law can still have the desired effect. Will you take your unregistered AR to the range? If you do you might feel eyes on you as you drive there and back, just waiting for the knock on the door or the tap on the shoulder. Pretty soon it makes sense to just keep it in the safe gathering dust which, to the banners, is the same as if you had given it up.
Another way the law could rear its ugly head is through divorce or other family estrangement. Your ex wants to keep the kids, eh? Well, what happens when you drop a dime to the cops that said ex has a safe full of unregistered “assault weapons?” Even the threat of such a disclosure might be enough to make the ex-spouse give in and sign whatever papers are presented.
Same with other estranged relationships. Oh, dad kicked you out of the house because you’re a bum who’s addicted to drugs and stole from the family? Well, just wait until junior drops a dime to the cops that dad has one of them nasty “assault guns” hidden away, never registered.
…And forget about selling it because that “good buddy” who really REALLY wants to buy your unregistered AR may very well be a guy who got busted a few months back and is now trying to get a reduced sentence by working with the cops to bust others.
“that means tens of thousands of gun owners are not complying with a law that is supported by New Yorkers,” said Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, citing a May poll commissioned by her group that showed state residents support key provisions of the SAFE Act.”
I’d like to see that “poll”. What were the questions? Who was asked? How many were asked? Where do those who were asked, live? And I’m sure there was some “number crunching” to get to the pre-conceived conclusion. What was the Al-Gore-ithm? (hehehehe)
I wonder if Cuomo is yammering that his peasants aren’t complying or just gloating about his legacy law he got passed in the middle of the night, consequences be damned?
Failing to register is more accurately called “non compliance” but is not the same thing as resistance.
True “civil disobedience” would be assembling in the village square with the weapons and then daring the police to arrest them.
Where is master Lars when we need him this thread is so SCARY ! ! ! !
I think I pooped my diaper… Sooo scary black guns
I was wondering the same thing.
Where is that little puke at ???
Such a puss.
HEY!!! Don’t put out bait for him. When he’s ignored in a post, he goes away and things are pleasant again. He only shows up to pick fights. Let him go sulk and find other people to bother.
#BlackGunsMatter
I read the Sheriffs’ Response to that piece of legislation. Basically, they’re on the side of the people, not on the side of a wanker governor.
If the people of the State of NY had any sense, they’d build a wall with no exits around Albany and keep the whiners inside, drop food to them occasionally, but otherwise, ignore them.
I thought most people who worked in NYC lived in and commuted from New England states like Connecticut, kind of like Wisconsin and Indiana. Or has that stopped?
