Craig Carroll; phony Vietnam Marine veteran
Someone sent us their work on this fellow, Craig Lee Carroll lately from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Folks in the Appomattox, Virginia area were curious about him ten years ago when he tried to join the VFW in the Virginia area, but he couldn’t produce a DD214 discharge certificate. Apparently, he’d been telling folks that, aside from being a Vietnam veteran and a former Marine, he was also a CIA agent, who, at the age of 68 was still involved in the Global War Against Terror.
Just last Veterans’ Day, he was still balancing balls on his nose for the local media;
Retired Lance Corporal in the Marines Craig Carroll served on the front lines in the Vietnam War. “You’re scared to death, you’re dealing with an unknown and once the shooting starts and all the chaos begins, all of a sudden I don’t hear anything. There’s no sound, everything is slow motion,” recalls Carroll of being in battle.
He operates the Gettysburg Militaria and Antiques to soothe the injuries of the Vietnam War.
Yeah, no. POW Network busted him ten years ago for lying. When that website came down, he thought it was safe to start telling his lies again, i suppose. But, nope, no military service anywhere;

I’ve been to his shop, and met this guy, and heard some stories. He seemed like an odd duck then, striking me “not quite right”. Now it’s time for all of my friends in the Reenactment and Living History programs to hear the REAL story.
If it impacts his business, then good. Fuck him.
The inventory part of the online store web site shows the uniform of a (Vice Admiral?) complete with nine rows of ribbons available for purchase.
I’m sure it’s ready to go for anybody who wants to play dress up on the next Veteran’s Day buffet raid at Golden Corral.
The ribbon rack on the uniform even looks like it sports the Navy Cross.
I could be wrong on that Navy Cross.
By order of precedence, it very well could be the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.
But the rack does seem to show a Purple Heart thrown in there just for good measure.

He “served on the front lines in the Vietnam War.” Where the hell were those front lines? I don’t need map coordinates, just identify the general geographical area above which the enemy was and below which he was not.
This requires some Clintonian parsing; it stated he “served on the front lines in the Vietnam War”. It did not state he served “in” Vietnam on the front lines. Thus, his “front lines” could have been the anti-war barricades in Berkeley or the free-love teach-ins at Cornell. The Vietnam “front lines” all depends on what and where you perceive the “front lines” to be. Now it all makes sense, don’t it ?
Makes as much sense as lying about one’s military service, or lack thereof, can make sense.

If Carroll is a liar about his military service, he’s probably also a liar about the provenance of the goods he’s trying to sell.
If he’s the same Craig Carrol who used to run a militaria shop just outside of Fredericksburg in the 70’s & 80’s, then yeah. I’d question his provenance. Wouldn’t put it past him to gin it up himself.
Back then, if it’s the same fellow, he was trying to pass off WWI period French Algerian Zouave jackets as original Civil War period 5th New York Zouave jackets, at a very steep price.
When I enquired about the French markings on the inside of the jacket, he tried to BS me about how those 5th NY jackets were imported from France. I knew, however, that the original issues to them were contracted through Brooks Brothers (yeah, they’ve been around that long) and the replacements were contracted through the US Quartermaster at Schuykill Arsenal.
I never went back there, because there were all sorts of reports about faked civil war buttons repros with the rear pulled out, the face slightly flattened, and a patina/grime induced chemically, etc. and being sold as originals.
Like I said, I may be wrong about him, but the odds have to be pretty long about having 2 fellows with the same name both being involved in selling militaria and uniforms, within about 100nm of each other.
Is that the Regimental Headquarters, the little store on Route 1 just north of the Rappahannock and Union Church? If so, I’ve never actually seen that place open.

If he is 68 years old, then he must have opened the shop when he was 18. Stands to reason if he retired from the Marine Corps, then he enlisted two years prior to being born. Hellofaman he is. He also told me his MOS (without hesitation, indicating to me HE was for real) was 3500, and I asked if he had in fact been a grunt. He said yes, and I went off at that point telling him what a worthless M. Fukr he was working for, being a fkcng liar and a no good S.O.B. GDC…Have to stretch my memory on this one. If I am not mistaken I went through several Dallas area media types, including television and newspapers. Seems like I found one reporter in particular that was interested in the story. If my memory is still conscious, it seems like I emailed Jonn and gave him the reporter’s name and told him to expect a call from the reporter. I DO remember fairly certain contacting his church by email and vaguely asking someone to contact me. It may possibly rather been a phone message I left the church, but I DO remember contacting the church; and was a bit surprised not hearing from them in return. Jonn may be better to recall the reporter conversation.

I went to his shop this past weekend and one of his younger store clerks told me that Carroll was a Marine Sniper in Khe San. Later, while in the store I saw Carroll himself and talked to him thinking that he was a Marine and said, “Semper Fi Marine”, but he just said “Hi” and looked at me. I asked him if he was a Marine and he said, “I used to be”, to which I replied, “No man, once a Marine, always a Marine, and he still just sort of glanced at me. I asked him his MOS, and he replied, “grunt…I was an 0311.” At that point the red BS flags went up because the store clerk proudly informed me that the guy was a sniper when I first walked in. My wife realized what was going on I think, and asked me to come over and look at a set of WWII Marine camo utilities that she knew I had been looking over when we first went in. I have confronted fakers before, but was unsure how to react with this cat, since I was in his store with customers in there. I did not want to make a scene so we left.
I’d buy a brick for 100 if it involves being given carte Blanche to toss it at his fucking head. Hell, if they’re 50 instead of 100 I’ll splurge and go with 3!!!!

Retiring as an E3 is possible, albeit rare – in two different ways. One is honorable (medical); the other not so much (reduction by court-martial sentence w/o punatitive discharge after having achieved 20+ years of service).

I believe you are referring to the DMZ Bar and Tick as he was known. I met him a couple times in the 90s. The walls in his establishment had some interesting military memorabilia. He passed away a few years back but I’d love to have some of the things hanging on the walls from that place.

I stopped in his store yesterday looking for a KA-BAR and he came out from the back. When he saw my USMC ball cap cover he quickly said ask if I needed help and then he turned around went back to the rear of his store. I think he recognized me from a month or so ago when I was in the store and bought a WW II Marine utility cover and was asking him some Marine Corps questions that made him nervous. I can’t believe that the guys working for him have need seen the postings on the internet of him being a phony.

He has been a liar sense I can remember. I met him when I was 10 years old. Every woman he has met he has conned… His business dealings were what’s best for him and what he could conn out of everyone. He’s a typical sociopath with illusions of grandeur. When I first went in his shop about 4 months ago one of the guys working for him was dressed up in a WW II German uniform and when he saw my Marine cover he told me that Carroll was a sniper in Viet Nam. Mason Dixon Militaria is not a fake store. It was originally a shop that he knew the owner of and Craig tried to con the owner into business with him of which jeff backed out of doing. They are two seperate entities with two seperate owners unrelated. Craig Carroll has no part of Mason Dixon. Call the borough and look up the Mason Dixon Militaria LLC this post is inaccurate. They also know is a fraud and was stolen valor as well.
