Christy Russell sentenced for VA fraud

Christy Russell

Associated Press reports that forty-one-year-old Christy Russell was sentenced to pay back more than $32, 000 that she stole via credit card from 55-year-old Steven Reis, an Air Force veteran, while he was a-moulderin’ in a shallow grave beneath his home for nine months. She was also sentenced to four years in prison.

Authorities aren’t sure how Reis came to be buried underneath a vacant Dayton home.

Reis’ body was discovered in September and authorities believe he died in January 2015. Police said in a statement that an autopsy couldn’t determine his cause of death.

There were four other people living in the home and Russell was his caretaker. No one called 9-1-1 when he died. The police couldn’t figure out who buried him under the house so the only thing they could prosecute was the theft.

Scary looking ‘woman’. Wouldn’t want her lookin after me… And yea, I’d hit it. With a stick.

Jarhead

CWOR…if you’d hit that, I’m pimpin’ for my neighbor’s Lab. Nice titz, long slender legs, hungry for tube steak, and loves it doggy style. As they always say, once you go black, you’ll never go back! Little bitch has an oral fetish. Once gobbled the transducer from the depth finder on my boat just because she wasn’t gettin’ any action. Kinda kinky in that she enjoys “Johnns” dressing up like a cat and chasing them around the bed. She considers it serious foreplay. Warning: don’t let her catch you and get your balls in her mouth. Otherwise you definitely gonna need some Viagra. Let me know if this makes you hot enough to want to make her your pet for a night. Price is $100 cash and two large cans of Purina for a night you’ll NEVER forget!

She’s a MAN, baby!

I say SHOOT IT BEFORE IT MATES AND LAYS EGGS!!!

Ex-PH2

So you don’t know who Annie Wilkes was?

A Proud Infidel®™

Okay, it’s been a while since I watched that movie.

Nonner

Chrisy, dear, you need to be employed at a high-level position in the VA before you can defraud it with impunity…some people I swear.

OWB

They really don’t like competition from mere mortals, do they?

A Proud Infidel®™

Four years for fraud, it sounds to me like that case was handled by one VERY LAZY Prosecutor.

As a healthcare fraud investigator, specializing in VA/DoD false claims, I will tell you that prosecutions THEMSELVES are rare and that most cases are plea bargained down and never go to trial. Four years for this cretin is a probably because of priors and a below-average PD.

She was his ‘caretaker,’ used his credit cards after his death, and they can’t figure out how he came to be buried under his home? I’d put that woman away for impersonating a human being and public ugliness, if that’s what it took!

2/17 Air Cav

Yeah. It’s a strange one. Aside from PTSD, for which he was receiving benefits, reportedly, his other med issue was diabetes. Again that’s what I found. In other words, he was not bedridden or so sickly that his death was imminent. So, he dies, either of natural causes or at the hands of another, and is buried in a basement. Police arrive at the house on another matter and someone says he knows where there’s a body. The body is located, and an autopsy is inconclusive. What is known is that Miss Piggy continued to use his card. The “caretaker” business goes unexplained. She is not a nurse or licensed caregiver. One hopes that this isn’t the end of the matter and that while she is in prison, the cause of death will be found.

Ex-PH2

She might have kept his insulin away from him. Then it would look like a natural death.

Hondo

I was thinking much the same. Or, alternatively, maybe watered it down/replaced it with water.

Sadly, absent a confession that might be very difficult to prove after the remains have had months to decompose.

Ex-PH2

Why is this blog double-posting comments now? Split personality? Or is it – dare I say it? – Annie Wilkes at work?

Hondo

Nah – not Annie. Just a goof on the part of the commenter. (smile)

Mayhem

Or gave him to much insulin, which is way quicker then depriving him of insulin…

Usafvet509

A slow, painful, torturous death is in order for this one…

2/17 Air Cav

Hey Usafvet509. The other day you went on a little rant, called me as ass, and demanded and explanation from me. I took the time to provide you with one, in two parts, no less. I have no way of telling whether you read it or not but as long as you’re around now, do me the courtesy of reading it or, if you have, acknowledging it.

2/17 Air Cav

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Yeah, I figured.

Skippy

Well every thing I wanted to say has been said ??
My daughter thinks it’s a Troll and I do see the similarities

Graybeard

We ought to modify the law to export those who defraud vets, whether VA professionals or rank amateurs, to the mountains of Afghanistan by airdrop.

A Proud Infidel®™

As in via a HANO drop? ?

They couldn’t figure out how he got buried under the house? WTF kind of police can’t figure that out at least to the point of probable cause. Hell I could write an arrest warrant now just based on what’s in the news and get it signed off by a magistrate. That’s shitty police work there.

2/17 Air Cav

3E9. I think they got that buried part figured out but there is no probable cause to believe that anyone took his life. And burying a corpse may or may not be a crime and, if it is, it may be no more than a misdemeanor wherever the hell this happened. Originally, Miss Piggy had been charged with evidence tampering, too, but that was dropped. It’s hard to tamper with evidence when there hasn’t been a crime.

20thEB67

C`mon, Dayton (Ohio?) PD/DA. Fraud is the only crime you can muster against this skank? YGTBSM

Unreal.

David

without evidence that it was other than a national death, about all they may have is the burial (if they are strict about it. No evidence of murder, several possible suspect residents- whom do you charge? – and I’ll bet her story was that “He told me to keep using the card because he was such a sweet old guy” – she got four years for that. The rest probably smells worse than that cellar, but realistically even Bernath could beat a murder rap on this one.

Jarhead

Damn that woman is UGLY!!!! She’s so ugly I’d have to put a paper bag over her face to get my dog to hump her leg. In fact, she’s so ugly that when she went into a strip club, they paid her to keep her clothes on!

A Proud Infidel®™

And probably dirtier than a wicker toilet seat in a highway rest area.

This tater twat needs to be spayed, her clitoris excised, her vagina shut up, her nipples excised, a lobotomy, her right hand amputated, her vocal chords destroyed, and otherwise prevented from reproduction and communication

A Proud Infidel®™

WHY NOT just radiate the damn thing until it’s sterile, then euthanize and cremate the damn thing and finish it off by flushing the ashes down a public toilet? hey, i kinda like that idea, she looks ALMOST as evil as my ex-wife!

ex-OS2

Damn….

Jarhead

She best be thankful she’s not around :
1. YOU being the judge.
2. The Taliban within reach of her.

I guess you forgot to mention a thousand cuts to her face; but then again SOME things DO make certain people look better.

2/17 Air Cav

Actually, she looks a lot like Shrek’s honey, Fiona. Ogres. Would ID SARC hit it? You betchum. He has a thing for jailhouse dames.

“Russell pleaded guilty in April to fraudulently using 55-year-old Steven Reis’ credit card to take advantage of his veteran benefits.”

There is no mention of which veteran benefits she took advantage of… at a guess, he may have had a retirement or disability income, somebody was compensating her to be a caretaker.

$32,000? Would you think that someone may have at least been making the minimum monthly payments to keep the account from being suspended or closed?

Somehow, I doubt that she will ever have $32K to pay off a judgment. It could be insightful to know much of that amount is interest/penalties, how much was already outstanding on the debt by the estimated date of Steven Reis’ demise (January, 2015) and how it was that investigators came to discover a grave underneath “his home” in September.

Even though it’s not real far from Dayton to Sporty’s Pilot Shop, I am inclined to think that Dead-stick Dan was probably busy with other stuff, last January.

A four year sentence sounds more like a means to keep her available while they sort out the rest of the story. Digging a grave, in Dayton, Ohio, in January, could have been pretty difficult.

Just An Old Dog

It sounds like he was getting a VA penision going to his bank Direct Deposit. She had his ATM Card and PIN, so she could simply make withdrawls throughout the month.
Not hard to do.
She probably was doing the same when he was alive and providing little care.
Elderly abuse. It happens way to much with VA and SS recipients. Often its the family members that do it.
Damn Shame.

Jarhead

J Dog….you present a serious dilemma few want to discuss these days. Some of the older vets have little if any family they remain in contact with. Making it worse, too often an alternate is paid an additional $300 + per month to handle one’s affairs. Bothers me just as much as it does you, and probably many others who know what is going on behind closed doors. Truthfully, I’d LOVE to see the V A and the police investigate this and make an example out of it. How can we start some sort of contact with both sets of authorities to see how they follow through? If we could just get one case such as this one rolling and go postal public with it, perhaps the likelihood of it spreading further would be less. We have to start some where and I’m willing to commit some time to the effort. Not smart enough to organize, but aggressive enough to do some serious grunt work to see it through. Name it if I can help. Willing to bet a lot of others would be interested and willing to pitch in a few hours to make this happen.
Wouldn’t we seriously appreciate another brother doing the same for us? You betcha!
One caveat…all helping are to be volunteers. If any money were to be collected to help, it need be handled ONLY by some one who can be bonded. The VERY LAST thing I want to be associated with is some veteran’s-related group being embarrassed by financial malfeasance. If someone seeks a Rolls Royce for their help, a child’s bicycle up the rectum would be just the order.
You, J Dog, and anyone else who would consider this…let’s make it happen. A lot of us would eventually go to our grave with a smile on our face if we could prevent these things from happening over and over. Accountability is the KEY…..PERIOD!! Open books available on request and all questions answered. How could we go wrong?

Tallywhagger

The direct deposit sounds pretty plausible as a way to access his benefits but the way they captioned story about her using his credit card to take advantage of his veteran’s benefits is vague.

Some states have established regulations and licensing standards for home-health aides. She may have been “free lancing” or providing “other” services.

A vacant home? “a shallow grave beneath his home for nine months…

Authorities aren’t sure how Reis came to be buried underneath a vacant Dayton home.”

Such may be the state of journalism, today. At least the reporters seem to have the names correct.

Tallywhagger

This report has a bit more detail about the story, albeit with inconsistencies:
