Wayne Simmons, Navy and CIA pretender pleads guilty to fraud
Someone sent us a link to the news that Wayne Simmons, the Fox News commentator who claimed that the CIA recruited him from the Navy decades ago, pleaded guilty to fraud in a courtroom the other day;
“Wayne Simmons is a convicted felon with no military or intelligence experience,” said Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “Simmons admitted he attempted to con his way into a position where he would have been called on to give real intelligence advice in a war zone. His fraud cost the government money, could have put American lives at risk, and was an insult to the real men and women of the intelligence community who provide tireless service to this country. This case is a prime example of this office’s ongoing commitment to vigorously prosecute government fraud and threats to national security.”
“Mr. Simmons lied about his criminal history and CIA employment in order to fraudulently obtain government contracts, and separately, defrauded a victim through a phony real estate investment deal,” said Paul M. Abbate, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “With these criminal actions, Mr. Simmons abused the trust of others, both in and outside of government, for his own personal financial gain. I commend the work of the talented FBI personnel and prosecutors who vigorously pursued this case and brought about today’s guilty plea.”
Somehow, he’d convinced the Army of his phony creds in 2008 and 2010 and deployed to the war against terror. Then he defrauded a woman of about $125,000 and he was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm by a felon because of two or three other convictions that the government hadn’t noticed when they hired him to go to Afghanistan, the putz. He’s looking at decades in federal prison, although, I doubt he’ll get it. He’s 62 years old.
You know, I might forgive the Army for believing his CIA creds, but the Navy? All they had to do was send an email down the hall to check on that, FFS.
The Washington Post says that the language that Simmons used in his statement to the court he still doesn’t admit that he lied;
Importantly, though, Simmons’s written agreement with prosecutors does not include language in which he says outright that he lied about a clandestine past. He conceded only that the government “would prove at trial” that he never worked for the CIA.
In court, Simmons admitted he had lied on federal forms when he claimed he had not previously been convicted of a felony, had never filed for bankruptcy and had held a top-secret security clearance. He said he did so to help get a government job overseas.
“I believed then and I believe now that my skill sets could be used in Afghanistan to fight the global war on terror,” he said.
William B. Cummings, Simmons’s attorney, said afterward, “In no way has Mr. Simmons disavowed his relationship with the CIA” and suggested that the agency might now be abandoning him.
He’ll be back.

He’s only 62. I hope he gets long-time in the slammer. Greed is an ugly, nasty thing to see.
Hmmm. The CIA also doesn’t need to disavow a relationship with almost everyone else on the planet – because there is no relationship to disavow.
Gotta love that slimy assed lawyer of his.
Those statements were positively Bernathian.
That’s what I was thinking. He’s like a more competent version of Bernath, which if you think on it, is much more frightening.
Ahhh, but can he read a fuel gauge?
That Fox News was duped by this guy seems to be the really big story. My sampling of the articles starting with his arrest through guilty plea put a special spotlight on the Fox connection. And the Asst AG and the FBI guy sound like members of the DRG, stroking each other silly. How did Simmons pass minimal screening? Have we gotten to the point that screenings and background checks are deemed unnecessary if someone appears on national TV as an expert? Simmons worked for International Security Assistance Force and, as Jonn points out, was in Afghanistan doing his intel/security thingy for the UN-led group. Yeah, he’s a fraud and a liar and a felon. He was BEFORE his guilty plea. So, how the hell is it that he got where he was? How is it that he was in a position to, as the oBaMa-appointed Asst AG says, cost the government money and potentially put lives at risk? So, will the FBI ferret out the multiple fails spanning multiple agencies–presumably to include the FBI–that made this guy’s fraud possible? Sure. You bet. My ass.
Fox News also had the AWOL Marine Jared Stern, special investigator for the DRG, on their short list of experts.
And Jared Stern still has not located the missing Elaine Ricci.
I miss Elaine and those romantic nights in Macho Grande….
I’ll never get over Macho Grande 🙁
Remember Elizabeth O’Bagy? The phony college graduate and Ph D holder that was lobbying as an expert for the US government to fund Islamists in Syria then when exposed John McCain hires her for his personal staff?
Seems nobody cares about doing any background checks just as long as they agree with what the phony is saying.
“So, will the FBI ferret out the multiple fails spanning multiple agencies–presumably to include the FBI–that made this guy’s fraud possible? Sure. You bet. My ass”
Sure 2/17…as soon as the FBI has their leash removed by Obama so they can proceed to release the evidence they have to indict Hillary.
I was sitting in Fox Business News green room when this story broke. It’s pretty ugly, but totally avoidable. Checking creds is an easy thing and verifying background is the ethical duty of anybody who puts people on tv.
I don’t know how many times I lost appearances to Wayne, but I know that he has added an extra level of scrutiny now (which isn’t bad imho). Nonetheless, making these false claims is never victimless.
Love the site btw.

Media and fact/background checking usually don’t go together – like oil and water.
Thank you for serving Sir.
Mr. Jamali,
You’ll appreciate this humor.
Imagine some GB guys hanging out ‘somewhere’ in NC discussing this clown and his resume.
“‘Outside paramilitary special operations group’? We’re outside all the fuckin’ time. Can we use that line?”
😉
I almost went to work with the CIA as a contractor. It would have meant that I would have been assigned to a remote outpost.
No thanks.
Simmons: “I believed then and I believe now that my skill sets could be used in Afghanistan to fight the global war on terror,”…
Sure, as Mullah Omar’s official cum taster…
As leader of ISIS’ special unit, the Hadji Ball Sack Brigade!
This clown definitely has what it takes to succeed in All-Points Logistics Executive Management.
Hell, he could turn out to be Phildo’s “go to” guy.
I remember this a$$ munch scolded & treated in a dismissive manner a retired army CSM & a former Delta Force guy on Fox News (O’Reilly or Cavuto I think). Guess who’s laughing now…
Stories like this can make you wonder if the CIA doesn’t tolerate people like Simmons as useful for shoveling horse poo and keeping everybody in the dark.
CIA guy 1: Did you catch Simmons on Fox last night?
CIA guy 2: He’s a hoser.
CIA guy 1: C’mon man, he’s really funny. His thing on the narco terrorists had me rolling. I’m thinking of sending him my decoder ring.
CIA guy 2: Is that the one you got with the labels from the Tom Clancy novels? Cool.
CIA guy 1: I’m thinking we should set up a dead drop to do it.
CIA guy 2: Let’s use Natasha; put her in fishnets and spike heels, and ol’ Wayne will be wetting himself.
Cocksucker. He deserves life in prison just for the sole fact of putting American lives at risk. Go fuck yourself Wayne Simmons.
This POS was investigated and outed by Agency veterans 2 years before he was arrested and the story ‘broke’.
Fox and the Citizen’s committee on BGazi have nobody to blame but themselves. They were warned and they circled the wagons around this phony POS because they liked the sound of his ‘rah rah’ bullshit.
Every single Agency veteran from the ops side of the house who ever took a serious look at him pegged him as a phony tool, as did every SOF guy who had any time on the spooky side of things.
Kent Clizbe (real-deal veteran spook) deserves some serious apologies from some serious people who should have known better.
If he winds up reading this: thanks for standing up for the right when it wasn’t the easy or popular thing to do, Mr. Clizbe.

“… could have put American lives at risk …”
Turd
Fox? Laughable.
If he were given a job as a CIA contractor, at most he would have given bum scoop advice to somebody who probably wouldn’t have listened to him anyway. Contractors aren’t legally allowed to run around and recruit clandestine sources, only blue badgers. Intel officers who work in the Directorate of Operations and the Directorate of Analysis do important work but their jobs are less high speed and crazy than people think.
