Gregory Owens; murdering phony
This is a weird story – you may need to diagram it as you read. There was once a sergeant major by the name of Gregory Owens who retired from the Army after 23 years of service in 1998. He took a girlfriend in addition to his wife. His girlfriend lived in Wisconsin and his wife lived in New Hampshire, so he made up stories about secret missions to Pakistan and Afghanistan to split his time between the two women. When the woman in Wisconsin found out about the woman in New Hampshire, she threatened to tell the wife about their affair. So Greg Owens decided to kill his wife, you know, because he had told everyone that he was a special forces-trained sniper with mad killer skills. His wife was staying with friends in Maine, so he broke in the house, shot at her four times (striking her thrice) and then shot the husband of his wife’s friend in whose house his wife was staying. No one died, you know, despite the fact that Owens had claimed to be a sniper. Well, the Army denied to the media that Owens was everything he claimed to be.
So we went to find out for ourselves. He had never been in Special Forces. He was stationed in Korea and Panama early in his career and he was in the Old Guard at Fort Myers, Virginia. he’d been a drill sergeant at Fort Dix, New Jersey, an ROTC instructor at Boston University, but no special forces training, no sniper training. I noticed in his awards, it lists the Combat Infantryman Badge, but I don’t see where he could have earned it and there are no service medals for any time in a combat area, so I’m thinking his lies began while he still in service.
His claims prior to his arrest were of Purple Heart Medals and Bronze Star Medals, but there are none in his records.
Owens was convicted about ten days ago and he’s looking at a life sentence. I doubted his claims when he said he was a sniper, but shot at his wife four times, striking her three times and not killing her. What sniper would miss a shot in the confines of a bedroom?
Update: He was sentenced to life in prison on July 12, 2016.

Jonn, maybe he got the SF stuff when he was at Fort Davis in R de P since it was up the road from Fort Sherman. It would be interesting if someone did a study to figure out why those with a perfectly good military career find a need to embellish on it. Looks like the soldier had some decent assignments and made rank quickly.
3/7th SFG at Fort Gulick would be closer to Fort Davis than Ft. Sherman was.
Reading through the attached article Cpt Trina Thompson who processes orders for United States Special Operations Command in Virginia testified against this shitbag at his trial. I wonder if this asshole was trying to fake membership in the secret army of northern Virginia?
Wow. Toss it all away….
So here is a new question for the Sentinel test for the Tomb.
“Who is the only badge holder convicted of attempted murder?”
I believe Tomb Guard badges can be revoked for conduct such as his.
I’ll be forwarding this article along with the scumbags Tomb Badge number (311) to the TOG Regimental Commander in the morning. Yes the badges can and do get revoked for misconduct even after you leave the Army.
Sent this thread’s link to a friend of mine who is a bona fide former Tomb Guard.
https://tombguard.org/tomb-guards/
I count 23 badges that have been revoked. My guess is that Gregory Owens’ badge (#311) will soon become the 24th.
From the FAQ:
“The Tomb Guard Identification Badge (TGIB) is awarded after the Sentinel passes a series of tests. . . And while the TGIB can be revoked, the offense must be such that it discredits the Tomb of the Unknowns. Revocation is at the 3rd Infantry Regimental Commander’s discretion and can occur while active duty or even when the Sentinel is a civilian.”
I am confused!
So, he is not a qual’d sniper because he failed to kill his wife and the other husband?
Yes, a diagram would help.
Well, in the end he may not be a sniper, but I betcha he will be someone’s bitch in prison.
Might have been more choice of weapon versus aim.
She took one to the back of the head and still lived.
At least he’ll (hopefully) never breathe free air again.
If he’s breathing it, it’s still free. OTH if he had received a dirt nap, that could be considered “justice rendered” thereby ending his free breathing. I know, I know, I’m being a smartass…
I’m amazed at how ones inabilities to keep there pecker in their pants can and does lead to so much mayhem
Way to wash out such a epic career that any would envy…
so I have a good question here… could he have gotten the CIB from Panama or Grenada ???
it would have explained the reason for having it maybe ?????
please negate this comment my question was answered below by Hondo…
I’m offended…
Lemme see. So he was there and she was over there and the other guy was…well, shit I give up.
Leave it to say, he’s a TURD!
Maybe he went to that sniper school in Panama.
Oooops! I’ve said too much!
He won’t leave prison alive… still facing charges at the state level.
I see a lot of cockmeat sammiches, tube steak and anal dilation therapy sessions in Greggy-poo’s future. Bubba, Thor, Julio and Mr. “Tiny” will love having a new bunkie in the cell block.
Poon-tang makes some men do some crazy stuff…
Shitbag
“Poon-tang makes some men do some crazy stuff…” You got that right, it an easily completely dominate a man’s mind. I wonder if Bubba & Thor have test driven him yet? I wonder if this is severe enough to deny him burial in a Military cemetery?
If he’s facing Federal charges and the max possible penalty he faces is the death penalty or life in prison, yes. Ditto if he ends up a Tier III sex offender with a life sentence. If he doesn’t end up with one of those, though, probably not.
If he ends up getting tried on state attempted murder charges, things gets somewhat messy. If he ends up convicted under state charges, the fact that no one died may technically still allow him to be buried in a national cemetery. The law seems to require a death to occur for a state crime (other than a sex offense) to be disqualifying. See

Disclaimer: not a lawyer, so I might not be reading that correctly. It’s IMO a fairly complex and not particularly clearly-written bit of Federal law.
CIB could be from Korea, Jonn. He was there in 1975-1976, and we still had troops on the DMZ during that time frame (and for quite some time thereafter). When I was in Korea, I believe the unit north of Freedom Bridge was a Bn from the 9th Inf – not sure which Bn, and they may have rotated.
The CIB was authorized for Korean DMZ duty during that time frame if one met the criteria, albeit under special and more restrictive criteria than the normal CIB rules (they were later retroactively changed to the normal CIB criteria). And while firefights on the Korean DMZ weren’t a daily occurrence in the 1970s, they weren’t completely unknown either. A machine gunner manning an OP would have been in a prime position to qualify.
Bottom line: the CIB could be from Korean DMZ duty and be legit. Or, as you point out, he may well have started embellishing his career while still serving. Dunno.
ok so this may put a answer to my stupid question above I quess I should have read his ERB LOL..
Not a stupid question at all, Skippy. I didn’t think about it at first either – and I served in Korea when the CIB was still authorized for DMZ service.
…FWIW, do we have anybody who can contact the Old Guard about this clown? IIRC, they reserve the right to revoke a Tomb Badge even after a member has separated.
Mike
VERY true, that can and do revoke that badge if a recipient fucks up badly enough, and his ought to be taken away..
He is being reported to the Regimental Commander.
I met the new Regimental Command Sergeant Major yesterday and forgot about mentioning this to him.
Regiment has been notified with info from Jonn.
no offense to anyone in the sniper community, but I have met a lot of excellent rifle shots who couldn’t ‘hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle’ using a handgun. Refle, handgun, and shotgun skills are not all interchangeable
” I doubted his claims when he said he was a sniper, but shot at his wife four times, striking her three times and not killing her. What sniper would miss a shot in the confines of a bedroom?”
The fourth (or first/second/third) shot hit her friend’s husband…..
He’s gonna walk. I can imagine his lawyer, completely confusing the jury.
Things were simpler when folks merely swapped wives.
Well, thank God he’s as good a sniper as his records show him to be.
I hope his (hopefully soon to be ex)wife recovers fully, and has a long, happy, and productive life, now that this lying snake is no longer a part of it.
And this is just another reminder that Stolen Valor is NOT a victimless crime.
Talk about irony, there is a highly decorated Green Beret by the same name.
Sad.
Guy was my PSG in A Co. TOG (I was a SQD LDR) before he went to the Tomb. I remember he was “wired” a little bit differently back then. Not a bad guy, but a little too “intense” about life in general.
I don’t understand what went wrong. Sounded like a great plan. yeah, I know, a plan is great until the first shots are fired. Nevertheless, had the execution (pun intended) been better, no one would have ever suspected him. No one, that is, under the age of two. And that might be stretching it.
This guy looks real familiar. When I graduated from A School in Dam Neck VA in 1988 we had an OS in our Class named Greg Owens from Michigan or Wisconsin and his father “CDR” Greg Owens showed up for our graduation. Looked a lot like a younger version of the picture above. #maybejustacoincidence
