Carter won’t demote Petraeus

Petraeus and Broadwell

Our buddy, Kristina Wong at The Hill reports that Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter has no intention of demoting General David Petraeus because he lost control of classified material when he gave the documents to his alternate squeeze and biographer Lieutenant Colonel Paula Broadwell;

Defense Secretary Ash Carter will not seek to demote retired Gen. David Petraeus for sharing classified information with his biographer, according to a Jan. 29 letter from the Pentagon to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

“As you know, the Army completed its review of his case and recommended no additional action. Given the Army review, Secretary Carter considers this matter closed,” Stephen C. Hedger, principal deputy assistant secretary of Defense for legislative affairs, wrote in a letter obtained by The Hill.

The letter was in response to one written to Carter by McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), ranking member, urging him not to retroactively demote Petraeus after reports that he was considering it.

In other words, the whole issue was just another big distraction.

See, see, Petraeus gave secrets to someone and they did NOTHING, so leave Hillary ALONE!!!!

sj

Are you channeling Lars?

MustangCryppie

Yup. They want to keep the punishment as benign as possible, so that there will be no barrier to Hillary continuing on to the nomination.

Hillary will stand in front of the nation after she receives her “flogging” and speak of her deep sadness and regret for her actions. Then she will say that it is time to move on and voila! Crisis gone!

“What difference does it make now?” /s

Mike Kozlowski

…Well, good for him, though I think he should have eaten at least one star (and the retirement pay return) simply for being a complete idiot.

On the other hand, I now owe my dad ten bucks.

Mike

Hondo

If Carter had evidence that Petraeus committed serious misconduct while Petraeus was still on active duty, he should have reduced him. However, absent such evidence IMO he had no justification to do so. I can’t see how post-retirement misconduct affects the nature of someone’s pre-retirement service.

blaster

agreed. I was wondering how they could even consider it. It almost seems to be double jeopardy to me, but I’m not an attorney.

“Retired regulars who draw pay are subject to the UCMJ, for life.”

http://nation.time.com/2012/11/13/could-petraeus-face-a-court-martial/

Yeah, I know it’s Time mag (spit), but the quote is attributed to someone who is presumably knowledgeable.

Claw

Whew!! Thought they had me there for a minute.

Glad I read the article and saw they are talking only about regular commissioned officers (I assume they also mean those officers who have not resigned their commissions) and not regular retired Non-Commissioned Officers.

Lord knows I’ve committed adultery in my heart and mind every time I’ve seen a picture of Cassandra Peterson.

GDContractor

My thoughts on the matter are: if he was stupid enough to put his dick into someone that was not his wife; what other stupid shit did he do? Personally, I’d like to see him lose his pension and have to replace that income by going on a debate tour with Tom Kratman, much like Liddy and O’Learey did. They could debate COIN strategy and presumably Petraeus would have to defend his ideas. But sadly, I bet that never happens.
Meantime, purge those unchaste thoughts from your mind Claw. Set the example for us younger dudes for God’s sake!

Shane

he did commit it on active duty when he stole it originally.

No break for this idiot… he stole and keep classified documents while on active duty… do not forget that.

jonp

I don’t agree. This was looked at, dealt with and is over. There is no need to re-visit this at a later date for political reasons unless new information came to light about something and I never saw a story to that point. Of course, there is Hillary so The Administration has to look like it is tough on this stuff so it doesn’t look so bad when Hillary walks.

JimV

She is cute for a LTC. ?

Skippy

that’s what mr winky said when she was moooaning! !! !

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ! !!!!!!!!!!!!

D

She was a MAJ. Promotion to LTC revoked before she ever pinned.

The Other Whitey

So it’s okay as long as he was plugging the security breach with his dick, apparently? Mel Brooks was right: it’s good to be the king.

What a crock of shit.

10thMountainMan

It’s total shit. All the servicemen/women that come home to jodie fucking their lives up at home and the fucking general is jodie. Everyone deployed, separated from family, losing friends, losing lives, and the fucking general isn’t fighting the war, he’s going on fucking dates. He should be completely crushed, dereliction of duty, everything else, smashed to E-1 and forfeiture of all pay and benefits…Then his sweet ass old kebler-elf wife Holly cuts his dick off.

Blaster

I see what your saying and somewhat agree, but you do know that he was retired from the Army when he did this, right?

And I am not a big Petraeus fan after he let the Arabs that stole Kurdish homes in Mosul, have the homes back after kicking the original Kurdish owners out of them when they took them back after the 2003 invasion.

10thMountainMan

Sorry blaster, I was operating under bad info. I thought he was still on the books when he hooked up with katie holmes.

Blaster

no worries. I’m sure it wasn’t the first time. Just the first time he was caught.

Sorensen25

John Kiriakou has no comment. Double standard, anyone?

Jarhead

Is it just me, or has anyone else taken notice of the fact that this jerk closely resembles Sweet Pea MANNING???????

Grimmy

Imo, the whole thing is bunk.

If an officer fucks up badly enough to warrant a courts martial, then he’s obviously demonstrated that he’s unfit to be an officer.

If it’s a fuckup bad enough to kick out of service, the kicked should be reduced to Pvt first.

It’s not the civilian world. The ramifications of bad acts can cost many lives. The personal power is large and in some cases, immense. The repercussions for fucking up in a serious manner should be catastrophic.

That might even help motivate those who climb the ladder for nothing more than personal ego rethink their efforts and redirect those efforts into the civilian world where repercussions aren’t so massive.

Skippy

Rank Has its privileges this is case in point

Sapper3307

Different spanks for different ranks its a way of life. Some things will never change.
Thank you DD-214!

Grimmy

Someone once said: “Power corrupts, ultimate power corrupts ultimately” or some such.

I believe that’s basically backwards. Imo, it should be “the corrupt seek power. The ultimate in corrupt seek ultimate power”.

We’ve long been at or past the point where it’s in our own best interests to start getting rather savage in dealing with the corrupt. There’s too damned much power just laying around waiting for a scumbag to pick it up and crush folks with.

Jarhead

One other point noticed by my wandering eye. Not only are her hands bigger than his, but ditto for her tits!
What a revoltin’ development!

jonp

So WTF was that whole thing about, then?

H1

It’s interesting how this issue resurfaces every couple of years.
It’s like someone had a strategic plan to ensure he never entered or influenced politics on any level.
The biographer may have been specifically selected to ensure this outcome…
