Graham Hunt; Washington State Republican Senator controversy

A couple of folks have sent links to this story from Washington State in regards to one State Senator there, Graham Hunt. He is an Air Force National Guard veteran who lived in Arizona during his period of service. he was deployed to the Middle East. According to the Seattle Times, his bio on his website has changed a couple of times.
Hunt has described himself as having been “wounded in combat” but grows vague when asked for details. He said he was knocked down by explosions but cannot remember where. He also says he cannot remember the names of units he deployed with to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Late last month, after being interviewed by The Seattle Times, Hunt altered several details about his military service on his online biographies.
He deleted references to the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal — awards a military personnel office says do not appear on his service record.
Also removed was a reference to Hunt being a “combat veteran” of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Here’s the way that it reads now;
Graham Hunt served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force for nearly 10 years, serving tours of duty in several countries, including multiple tours to the Middle East. He also graduated from the U.S. Air Force Law Enforcement Academy and the U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Nuclear, High-Yield Explosive School. He has been awarded several military honors, including the Air Force Achievement Medal.
Here’s the picture that began the controversy. It was posted on his Facebook page;

Several months later it was removed when Hunt admitted that neither of the men in the photo were him. Here’s the original AP Stock photo from which the campaign photo was created;

Actually, that’s pretty common among phonies – using a photo to prove their creds, a photo that isn’t of the phony. Tim Poe did it, too and TMZ swallowed his story until we proved him in error. Hunt also did another thing common for phonies – he blamed a staffer for posting that story.
Military records show Hunt served in the Air National Guard from 1998 to 2005, assigned to Sky Harbor Air National Guard Base in Phoenix, according to Lt. Col. Belinda Petersen, a spokeswoman with the Air Reserve Personnel Center in Colorado. After 2005, Hunt was a nonparticipating reservist until 2010, when he separated from the military.
Hunt achieved the rank of staff sergeant and earned several awards. They include a small-arms marksmanship ribbon, the Air Force Expeditionary Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal, according to the personnel center.
The achievement medal was earned while Hunt was at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia in late 2002 and early 2003 as part of the 363rd Air Expeditionary Wing, according to a copy of the medal citation supplied by Hunt.
Hunt’s response;
Rep. Graham Hunt, R-Orting, released the following statement in response to the January 23 article in The Seattle Times entitled, ‘Combat veteran’? Records fail to back state lawmaker’s claims.
“I have been completely transparent with Mr. Brunner about my military service. I am a combat veteran, and served my country overseas in multiple deployments to the Middle East, including to Iraq and Afghanistan. Records with the Air Reserve Personnel Center were not automated in 2001 and 2003 as they are now, so I do not have a complete copy of all my records. I do, however, have records of the following medals I received:
Air Force Achievement Medal
Air Force Expeditionary Service Medal
Combat Readiness Medal
National Defense Service Medal
Air Reserve Force Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Devices
Armed Forces Reserve Medal“I am proud to have served this country honorably in the armed forces, and will continue to do so in my service as a state representative.”
It’s obvious to me that the Seattle Times doesn’t like Mr Graham for some reason that they don’t mention, otherwise why would a journalist spend so much time investigating his military career. There’s usually politics behind such circumstances. By the same token, Mr Graham should have been more forthright in his campaign bios. I have no sympathy for him. He goes on to blame clerks for not keeping his records up to date. Well, that’s not the clerks’ fault. I can show you, in about 5 minutes, every award that I’ve ever claimed on this blog. Things I can’t document, I don’t claim. It’s really that simple.

GT don’t forget to use Ass before Clown. LOL……
Well, this is confusing considering what is posted on this site:

“Air Force Expeditionary Service Medal”
Umm…that’s not a medal
Correct. I’m guessing he means this one.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Expeditionary_Service_Ribbon
If he was in the Middle East when he says is was, wouldn’t he be authorized either the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (depending on what operation he supported)?
This doesn’t smell right to me?
As an aside, what is the difference between the Air Force Expeditionary Service Medal and the Air and Space Campaign Medal? Reading the press releases from AFPC it would appear that one deployment could qualify an individual for multiple awards?
Yep, L4C, he would. He’d rate the GWOTEM – but not the ACM or ICM. Saudi Arabia was part of the defined GWOTEM area during that period and afterwards.
The GWOTEM was also the initial award for service in Afghanistan or Iraq prior to the creation of the ACM and ICM. The ICM and ACM were created in 2005; retroactive conversion was allowed, but (unlike Vietnam and early service there qualifying for the AFEM) was not mandatory. The individual had to request that conversion; they could opt to keep the GWOTEM for early service in either Afghanistan or Iraq instead. They just generally couldn’t use the same deployment to rate multiple campaign/expeditionary medals without unusual circumstances (i.e., intra-theater transfer, based in GWOTEM area but did enough TDY/missions into Iraq or Afghanistan to qualify, engaged in combat or WIA while in-country on a mission, etc . . .).
I’m guessing there are a number of folks out there who deployed to rear areas (Kuwait, SA, Bahrain, etc . . . ) during 2001-2005 who received the GWOTEM – and are now “rockin’ the lie” about having an early deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan.
I’d have to wonder why the appropriate campaign medal isn’t included in his service bio?
It could be that he was reliant on someone else to update his records, but I’m not sure thats the type of person I want to vote for (regardless of politics).
Good old Bahrain!!! Operation Southern Watch!!
To add to your explanation. The initial deploying personnel were awarded the GWOT Expeditionary Medal, along with appropriate campaign ribbon(s). Personnel deploying after the “cut off” date for that award were awarded the GWOT Service Medal. They are two different awards with different qualifying criteria. Ergo, a service member who was awarded the GWOTEM, would be still be eligible for the GWOTSM if redeployed at a future date.
Hunt was a security guard at Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia. He didn’t meet eligibility requirements as defined by: Air Force Instruction (AFI) 36-2803, The Air Force Military Awards and Decorations Program.
Dude has quite the rack.
The Seattle Times is hating on Hunt all of a sudden is because he is drafting legislation to stop this:
http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/transgender-nohearing/
Which is a ruling from the WA State Human Rights Commission that will make it a hate crime to deny restroom or changing room access to those that identify as the gender even though biological conditions say they aren’t the claimed gender.
Oh and he is a Republican, the Times like most newspapers hate GOP types.
Neither of which excuses his mistakes, but gives background to this attempts to be Woodward and Bernstein again.
Add in that he was elected in 2014, its amazing this just blew up.
Charles, you’re right, it has to be the trans gender bathroom issue along with the trip to Burns Oregon.
Of course the Seattle Times is after him because he’s a Republican and socially conservative. But the dumbass handed them the nightstick to beat him with by embellishing his perfectly honorable if unspectacular military service. He deserves every lump he gets.
Freaking idiot.
I like the “not automated” BS. I still have freaking copies of documents from basic through retirement as well as my original enlistment contract from ’83 – they had these things called carbon copies even back then…what a twit.
it seems a agenda is at play here with the media.. hence the reason to have integrity
and to be Honest! ! ! how hard is that to do ?????
Exactly. When will these types understand that TRUTH is always better than a lie?
Word ^^^^^^
I sent this guy a message on FB and told him that if he had earned the awards he could prove it by publishing his DD-214. I warned him that if he did not the Stolen Valor folks would come after him. We’ll see if he can put up or shut up. It pisses me off when conservatives pull this shit. I hope he is not lying but my gut instinct says that he is.
But it’s OK when liberals/democrats/progressives do it?
Crap, hit the stupid “report comment” when I meant to “reply”… sorry.
In short, I doubt that’s what Cacti35 is implying, Joe. I think he means “you expect the guys on the other team to play dirty, but when your own guys do, you get double mad at them”.
I absolutely hate the politics of today. I think I’m going to write in DEEZ NUTS for every candidate,
Am I the only one who sees that someone did a Photoshop job on the right sleeve to remove the combat patch and US flag and put USAF rank on it?
Nope. My guess is they did that the same time they replaced the photo’s background with the US flag and text.
Someone Bernathed the photo? Say it ain’t so!
It would have been a close deal with his service timing considering 11 ACR didn’t start wearing the patch on the right shoulder until mid 2004 – and he looks a little too young to be of Desert Storm vintage…
I too have had the same thing happen to me. Records are hard to keep up with especially after you discharge. I feel his pain.
Some confusing things om a persons claims are easily cleared up with just a little information. Like in your case Dalton, what was your Ranger School Class number? Knowing that could set everything right, if it hasn’t already been cleared up on here already. Give me that and I will stand with you showing everyone here that you were actually a Ranger student. I have fast access to check it out, and would be glad to help you put an end to this.
believe me Dalton. Mr Cee here can get your records all cleared up in a heartbeat.
stop stalling, not many folks out here are so lucky as you are with getting this kind of assistants
just saying…
SHUT UP, BUNNY-FART!!! Frankie Cee is right, I’ve known a fair share of REAL US Army Rangers, each and every one of which would forget their own birthdate before they’d forget what their Ranger School Class Number was, OH, and your “Rodeo Competition”? WHICH Rodeo circuit have toy competed in? MY bet is that your entire “Rodeo Career” has been little more than pole dancing in assless chaps during “Rodeo Night” at The Blue Oyster!!
Dickless rocks out to a guy from Chicago by the name of Samwell… he’s known for performing “What, What in the Butt”… definitely not safe to YouTube or Google anywhere!
Hunt at least made it through Basic and had actual service to embellish.
Horsedung, fefe-forker. You have no room to talk. Until you prove otherwise, you’re nothing but a dipstick with a “Uncharacterized” discharge because you couldn’t hack it in basic training.
Where is that DD-214 you promised to send Jonn weeks ago, bunni-boi? Did you send it to Jonn yet? No? Why the hell not?
Now, go home and get your (flipping) shine box!
Dickless must have missed Fefe or his rump riding buddies at the local gay bar something fierce… so he cried his widdle eyes out to get booted out of the Army.
The only type of ranger Dickless Cockholster is is one of those Free Range Rump Riders… rump rides anything on four legs…
Deal with the Stolen Valor fame, Dickless… it lasts forever on the Internet, bytch!
Hey Dickless Cockholster… still rump riding at the local gay bars in Stillwell???? Still trying to do the felching thing to little bunny Fefe???
Still no 214… still running the suck hole when there isn’t a cock or three in it.
What’s the matter brah? Come to my next rodeo or shut up. You are just a poser anyway probably some POG. Listen boy I rodeo I don’t know if you realize it but it’s for men only and only men can ride the big bull and boy the bull is big. So shut up and ride the bull or quit being a fairy boy. Take it big or shut up POG.
Work my balls, rodeo clown.
Suck it, felching rump rider…
The only thing constructive you’ve done with your life, Rump Rider, is suck off the bulls with that cockholster you love to run… in front of your butt buddies at Rump Riding Roy’s Gay Bar in Stillwell.
Fucking poser… fucking liar… bunny felcher
“POG” is an interesting choice of words coming from a basic training washout.
Send Jonn the DD214, or STFU.
Now go home and get your (fancy) shine box, bunni-boi. Some of the adults here might need a shoeshine.
Big talk comin’ from a washout.
Dalton, the offer is still up my daughter or my son up in Wichita said they will come down and pick up your 214..
Don’t hold your breath waiting for him to take you up on that offer, Skip.
You can’t keep up with a record that consists of 1 page? You’re dumber than your bunny

You mean after your 46 days at Lost In The Woods? I’m Air Force, and I think you’re a pussy.
The sum-a-butch is a phony and deserves to get beat severely about the head and shoulders by the Seattle Times. What’s that you say? He was awarded the National Service Medal. Well then, he is entitled to embellish his military service. I did note that what I graduated in 1959 was known as the Air Police School is now called the U.S. Air Force Law Enforcement Academy, or is that something different?
Looks like he enjoys Graham Crackers too.
No wait – that’s what he is…
No excuse for embellishing. Ever.
That said, there is a difference between exaggerating and flat out lying about things. This doesn’t feel like much beyond some mistakes. Still, anyone running for public office should expect every little detail to be examined very closely. This kind of thing is just ignorant.
Not even close to putting yourself in for multiple awards of the Purple Heart or any of the many other variations upon the theme of valor thieves we see regularly.
Use of the pic? Probably done without his knowledge by an overzealous volunteer. It’s also the sort of thing an opposition plant would do intentionally. Still, he should have been aware that it was there and not appropriate. Evidently he was not.
Dunno if I can agree, OWB.
Someone knows if they’ve been to Iraq or Afghanistan. Physical presence or overflight for a specified number of days in each country (or being engaged in combat action in-country, WIA, or being MEDEVACed out of country) is required for those campaign awards.
A person also knows whether they’ve been WIA or not. Barring a major head injury with residual effects, I daresay that they’d be able to remember the specific where and when about that, too.
To me this seems like the kind of embellishment we see far too often: plain, unspectacular but honorable service “puffed up” to make the individual seem far more “heroic” than reality. In this case, it occurred shortly after the guy moved to a location about 1000 miles away and started a career in politics.
The timing is the clincher for me; my guess is that he thought no one would go far to verify his claims of service. But I could be wrong. YMMV.
Sad. Just freaking sad.
Can’t argue with any of your points, Hondo. That was my initial reaction to a quick overview. Further study could well produce my ire, and sadness, as well.
Ugh, you said Tim Poe. I hold a special kind of hate in my heart for that guy. There I was, on leave, I just took my wife to Carrabbas and then went to Sybaris just North of Indianapolis for a much needed date weekend and into our date weekend I get called back into work because of this turd so that I can verify his training.
I”m a little confused. He had several awards on his site, took them down but continues to claim them when he didn’t or did he not have proof and now he does?
If it was a matter of getting his records then the paper is on a vendetta for some reason.
If he claims what he didn’t earn then he is a shitbird and should step down.
We have a reply back from the NPRC on his Marine claim. They never heard of him. Still waiting on his Air Force FOIA.
Another lying politician. This is my shocked face.
Note to legislators sporting the “R” designation:
Leave the military service record embellishment to your colleagues with the “D” designation… you’re making a fool out of yourself!
Hunt just released his DD-214 due to the controversy. The digital copies are here:

For a guy who already posted a fake photo, and is doing every variation of the Caught Red-Handed Phony Veteran Tapdance possible, the benefit of the doubt you’re giving this guy is mind-boggling.
