Washington Post; Half of D.C. residents want a return to citywide gun ban, poll finds
The Washington Post conducted a poll of the residents of the District of Columbia in regards to the current state of gun ownership, or, rather, the lack thereof, in the District. Their poll says that 51% of the people polled want the gun ban to return and 47% oppose that. However, the margin of error in their poll is +/-4% meaning that the difference is statistically insignificant, but you wouldn’t think that from the article.
With a solid half in support of a total gun ban, the poll’s findings will probably embolden D.C. politicians and gun-control advocates, who are fighting to keep intact lesser firearm restrictions that gun-rights advocates are contesting in federal courts.
Yeah, well, there’s a solid half in the other direction, too. Besides, this is a good example of why there is a Bill of Rights. Those amendments were added to the Constitution in order to protect a minority of citizens from the tyranny of majority, you know, even though there’s not a majority supporting a gun ban in DC, anyway. If the majority wanted Congress to establish a national religion, or if a majority wanted to muzzle the press, they can’t, because of the Bill of Rights. The same goes for gun ownership.
To their credit, the Post did interview some rational people for their article;
“Isn’t that in the…the 2nd Amendment, no they shouldn’t ban guns,” said Idriis Bilaal, 88, who spent two decades in the Army and lives in an area of D.C. north of Capitol Hill where robberies have been on the rise. “Guns don’t kill nobody, they just lay there. A man should be able to own a gun if he wants to. It doesn’t mean he has to use it wrongly.”
“This is America, you’ve always had a right to own a gun, and I think you should,” said a poll respondent who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is among the few who have gone through the process to legally register a gun in the District and considers that decision a private one.
A retiree who lives in a neighborhood north of Capitol Hill, the respondent said he obviously disagrees with a ban.
“You should have some protection, I’m 70 and that’s the way it used to be. Why shouldn’t you when all those criminals have guns? They don’t care about a ban on guns.”
But, they interviewed some irrational people, too;
Pearley Harmon, 76, a retired engineer who lives in Takoma Park, said he thinks that gun violence has increased since the Supreme Court struck down the city’s ban on handguns, and, if it were possible, he would like to see the ban restored.
For the record, none of the crimes committed with firearms in the District since the total ban was lifted were committed with a registered firearm or by a registered gun owner. So, restoring the ban would have no impact on crime in the District. There have been 144 murders committed with firearms this year, the were 91 at this time last year. But you know, gun registration was allowed last year, too. Since the gun ban was enacted in 1974, the Metro PD confiscated about 2,000 illegal guns every year in spite of the law. Criminals don’t care about laws, apparently.
My question to those folks who want the ban restored is “What part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand?”

‘Criminals don’t care about laws.’
No! Really!?! Where’d you get that idea?
Not surprising coming from a city that consistently votes in the 95% range Democratic.
Actually, the surprising thing is that the percentage isn’t higher.
Well, whaddaya want? It ain’t Chicago!
Not surprising either when you consider, 90% of those liberal a.h.s work for the govt..and are going to do whatever obozo tells them to do!!
The DC Pooleece Chief is taking action. I guess they can beat terrorists with a purse until someone shows up with a gun. Maybe they are encouraging crack heads and pimps to get involved. Not sure who their intended audience is.

Empirical evidence demonstrates that engaging a murderous asshole who has a gun doesn’t work very well unless you have a gun, too.
Do not tell Cathy Lanier that, what ever you do. Because, she knows a whole lot more than anyone else.
I remember what it was like when I was living in Washington, D.C., at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, better known as the “Ol’ Soldiers’ Home”.
No one there is allowed to have guns, but most of us secretly had them anyway.
We literally had bullets from the neighborhoods and passing vehicles flying past our heads on the grounds of the Ol’ Soldiers’ Home, and every day and every night, we had the constant sound of sirens and gunshots.
There’s a major racial factor in Washington, D.C., which no one dares speak of, and therefore, it is a problem that cannot be solved, and with time, will only fester and worsen.
Yes, the ol’ soldiers need their weapons, legal or not.
Brought to you by the city that re-elected a cocaine loving mayor…
Isn’t an elected public official supposed to represent his constituents? Marion Barry fit that description to a “t”, and they loved him for it.
He was a walking laff-riot, too, with his antics; I actually miss him a little.
Yeah ban guns like they were meth, coke, pot and hash, you can’find any of that anywhere in DC these days, can you?
And I’ll bet it would take you two whole minutes, maybe even three, to find a woman in DC who will engage in sexual intercourse with you in return for a cash payment up front!
There’s about 500 people in Washington who are willing to give you anal intercourse for free whether you want it or not.
It’s never free. They charge you for the opportunity to take you dry and deep.
There’s a reason that DC’s namesake monument is a 550-foot tall granite shaft . . . .

this use to be a respected magazine.. they have lost me the last year or so they’re left slide is getting annoying. I’m done with the BS Lol… they have lost me as a subscriber their FB post on this link makes me sick at best…
The only poll that counts for me is the jury poll, but they come too infrequently because trials are so rare. Mandatory sentencing isn’t mandatory at all, especially when serious violent crimes are reduced to simple assaults for plea deals and other charges simply go poof! and magically disappear. Time and again, the same crims are arrested, jailed for too short a term, if at all, and released to supervision of one sort or another. It’s a game and the public is always the loser.
And another thing–The conditioning of the general public is all that this crap is about regarding guns. Does the WaPo conduct polls on voting rights? How about search and seizure? The right to peaceably assemble? Petition the gov’t for redress of grievances? No, no, no, and no. The whole scheme of the LEFT is to condition people against guns, to portray gun owners as nuts, and to coax gullible and ignorant people into believing that the power to ban guns altogether is theirs.
Well, it appears that about 50% of DC would like to have guns. So, it is an even split, and we have that right to bear arms thing, so the tie goes to the runner.
I believe in this case, majority opinion is irrelevant. As I recall a couple of things called the “US Constitution” and “Heller v. DC” trump majority opinion here.
What I found interesting is that support for the ban was highest amongst the poor and least educated.
Those who are successful and have some college or a college degree are much more likely to be against any ban.
There’s a correlation there somewhere.
I would contend that half the DC residents are Fed gov workers or Congress, and of course they want gun control. How else would they otherwise achieve the tyranny that IS D.C. ?
FWIW, the NRA is offering Life Memberships for $500 through the end of the year. Usually $1000, might be $1500 after new year. If your not currently a member, join for $30 then go to NRA2016.org and upgrade.
Nothing pisses off libs and democraps more than the NRA.
Hmmm. Wonder how many of those polled are career criminals or common thugs. Criminals support gun control because it makes their job easier. Not unlike the thugs of the day supporting prohibition because the sale of illegal alcohol was their source of income.
@ OWB, Et Alii:
In answer to your question, when I was living there, it was estimated that eighty (80) percent of the population were convicted felons, which made then ineligible to serve on a jury.
Thus, ONLY in Washington, D.C. (so far as I am aware), are police officers, attorneys, and even judges, called for mandatory jury duty.
Often, residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home are called for jury duty, unless they have a physician’s written authorization to be excluded.
Everywhere I’ve lived, jury pools came from the voting population, thus cops, judges, and every other voter got summoned occasionally for jury duty. Its not unheard of for them to serve on juries.
The county I live in draws from vehicle registration. People weren’t registering to vote so they wouldn’t have to do jury duty.
Yep, that’s another way. We probably need one of our attorney posters to clue us in on how it most commonly is done.
Almost got seated on a gang banger’s jury a few years ago. By the time they got us into the courtroom, the thug pled out. Maybe the jury looked too tough after he got a look at us?
Crime rates have spiked in every city this year and most of the crimes are in the hood’s so loved by libidiot politicians and voters.
Milwaukee has seen a huge uptick in crime this year and the only thing that the mayor can do is to spend a billion dollars to put in a trolley system that won’t serve any real attractions or businesses and won’t run in the snow, of which Milwaukee has lots of…
Sheriff David Clarke is a huge thorn in the side of every lib out there. He is a Democrat, black and very conservative and will not shut his mouth.
I hope to God that some GOP wins the presidency and puts Sheriff Clarke as the AG with the ability to fire as many people as he sees fit.
He will not take any shit and people love him for it.
The death toll in Paris was high simply because nobody could shoot back.
That is why I stay out of gun free zones. Gun Free Zones are nothing but a free fire shooting gallery with a target rich environment.
My question to those folks who want the ban restored is “What part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand?”
The part where it continues to exist because it makes them miserable.
There are at least two cities in the great Nation where I wish every law abiding (good shot) citizen was packing a fairly decent piece of cold steel.
Those two cities are Wash DC and NYC.
For obvious reasons, as per open source reporting (non-klasserfried), these two cities are high on a determined adversaries’ target list.
But what do I know …
PS: These two cities of the toughest to obtain UNRESTRICTED CARRY.
SHAMEFUL!
Hey! You left out Chicago! For shame!
So, roughly half of the residents of DC are either (1) dyed-in-the-wool Leftist kool-aid drinkers who value perceived security and “doing something” to looking out for themselves, or (2) are too naive/uneducated/stupid to understand freedom? I’m frankly surprised the fraction wasn’t higher than 51%.
Still, this quote from Sam Adams comes to mind:
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
This quote from Franklin is also IMO apropos:
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
Translation: At least half of DC residents are criminals that don’t like their victims armed.
