4th Infantry Division’s footprint in Germany
According to Stars & Stripes, the 4th Infantry Division has sent a hundred or so soldiers to Baumholder, Germany in order to establish a command and control element for the Army’s move into Eastern Europe.
“Baumholder will become 4th ID’s home here in Europe,” said Maj. Jason Meier of the 4th ID’s mission command element in Germany. “It’s a full battalion footprint.”
Since February, a command element from the Colorado-based 4th Infantry has operated out of the Army’s garrison in Grafenwoehr, where it has overseen U.S. Army Europe’s efforts connected to Operation Atlantic Resolve — the campaign to reassure NATO’s eastern members and to send a deterrent signal to Russia.
Didn’t we just pull most of our maneuver units out of Germany recently? It was 2012, actually, you know at about the time of the last Presidential elections. Funny how quickly the “peace dividend” thing can dissipate when reality overtakes campaign promises.

This administrations keeps using those words, “peace dividend” I do not think it means what they think it means….
Remember, it’s SMART POWER… and the RESET button!
Yes, lets make this tard the next President. The look on the BBC reporters face is priceless.
What?
I’m sorry, but I think I misunderstood what you said.
Did you actually use the word ‘reality’, in connection with the current (lack of) administration? Just trying understand here.
Baumholder; “The Rock”.
I remember being at Baumholder in July and seeing snow flurries. I was shocked until I got back to garrison and looked at a world map and realized we were at the same latitude as the Canadian Shield area …
IIRC, this would be around ’73-’74-ish.
I last left Germany in 2007 when everything shut down in Darmstadt. Baumholder was not far behind in shutting down IIRC. The mayor was saying that when the Army left, Baumholder would cease to exist as a city.
I wonder what the 0baministas will have them doing, maybe handing out food to the ME “refugees” further infesting Europe?
So, we’re redeploying 100 troops to the westernmost part of Germany . . . to reassure our allies in Eastern Europe.
I’m guessing that the Poles, Czechs, and Hungarians are just thrilled by that.
I’m also thinking that deploying that HQ to Poland, the Czech Republic, or Hungary would have made infinitely more sense – and in the first case, could have probably been arranged a couple of years (if not a decade) ago.
That was my thought: Screw Germany, go to Poland – if you’re serious, Obama.
Baumholder , I was stationed there for 3 years ’96-’99. Went back to visit last year and it was a ghost town .
Idar-oberstein is my maternal ancestors home. My Father was there with the 9th ID in the fifties. My older brother was born in Baumholder. The land around the Post commander’s house belonged to one of my relatives prior to the war. It was a popular resort. Hitler took it away from my relative because he had Jews working there. It was never returned to the original owner.
My unit (14th Maintenance Co.) at Wiesbaden had a detachment at Baumholder.
Being sent to the detachment was always used by the leadership as a threat.
