Oopsie.
Back in July 2014, an LA-area police officer took part in the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge”. Noting particularly unusual about that.
A video of the challenge was posted to the Internet. Nothing particularly unusual about that, either.
The officer had absolutely no problem in hoisting a 5 gallon bucket of ice and water above their head while participating in the challenge. Absolutely nothing unusual about that, either.
However, what is unusual is that as a result the officer is now facing felony charges.
It seems that Jaime Robison, an officer on the Pasadena Police Department, was on disability for a lower back injury at the time of her participation in the “Ice Bucket Challenge”. She was receiving disability payments.
Water weighs about 8 1/3 pounds per gallon; ice, a bit less than water. So assuming the bucket had a somewhat more than 4 gallons of ice and water in it, that bucket likely weighed 35 pounds or more.
Oopsie.
On seeing the video, the Pasadena PD investigated. They also investigated a previous Robinson disability claim back in 2012 – one that had allowed her to receive disability for over a year.
Investigators determined that both claims were almost certainly exaggerated. The total loss between both claims was approximately $117,000.
Robinson pleaded not guilty to four counts of insurance fraud in May of this year. No word yet on final disposition of the case.
“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

on the last sentence Hondo NO JOKE ! ! ! !
A tout mes amis
Je vous aime
(Too many American beers, and I start talking shite)
“Almost certainly exaggerated”. Wow, ya think? The investigators better watch their step or they might give her the PTSD.
Well GEE WHIZ, who’d a thought of being that dumbassed? Was she bored into attention whoring after being on disability?
Yup, Gabe Suarez had the same issue… And did a year in jail.
Last sentence should have tripled the emphasis and read,
Stupid people play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I can see it coming, next week the cop will be filing for mental disability. That will be a winner for sure!
Malingering fuck.
Incoming #waronwomen nonsense.
It could’ve been worse. She could’ve been in the Army and another profile queen for 8 years plus.
Having managed to herniate three lumbar disks in the line of work, and endure the over a year of pain, meds, and therapy, I just a well of sympathy for poor Jamie.
“Sympathy” is in the dictionary between “shit” and “syphilis.”
I had a surgical correction of two herniated Cervical discs, and am currently waiting for nature to “heal” a herniated lumbar disc. The doctor says that’s better than being cut on, I tend to agree, mostly.
That said, Jaime can GDIAF.
Good luck, buddy! Those who haven’t experienced it can’t appreciate what you’re going through.
A cortisone shot in the spine is best done in the morning, as your day can only get better after than charming experience.
Aqua-therapy worked best for me, and I did heal up to about 90%, but it took looong time.
I know. The neuro doc and my GP doc both told me they could give me the cortisone shot, but I’d hate myself, and them, if I got it. The neuro doc wasn’t enthralled with idea of sticking needles in people’s spines. That kind made up my mind for me.
So far, it’s like having a muscle spasm. Except for two episodes where I could only find relief by laying on the floor til the spasm went away. Icy-Hot works sometimes, there’s a topical pain reliever my son gave me that he gets from his doctor that works on some days.
I really hate being able to predict the weather by how my back feels.
***I hit report by accident! Sorry***
Before I turned 23, i had 3 epidurals, plus every pain drug known to man. After review of the MRI, doctors couldn’t understand why I was able to walk at all (with a cane). At 24, disko and laminectomy on the ol’ lumbar.
9 years later, Ortho recommendation is full lumbar fusion when the time comes. I feel ya both!!
Wife has 5 screwed up discs and finally after years o unrelenting pain, doc burned out some nerves there and she finally got some relief. Insurance denied the claim, though, and said it ‘wasn’t medically necessary’.
Make very sure you contact the right kind of chiropractor. I have a cousin who was a firefighter, involved in a car wreck. He was injected with papain, and it worked. He later became a chiropractor himself, because it worked for him.
Reminds me of a similar story about a decade or more ago where a guy collecting disability rode a bicycle down Pacific Coast Highway for some concert tickets. I believe that he was wearing lingerie while riding the bike.
Damn, the things some folks will do for free stuff.
How much ice and water were in the plastic bucket? I don’t know. I’m sure that will be a point of contention. How much weight should a person of this woman’s size (whatever it is) NOT be able to pick up if she is suffering whatever lower back injury she was diagnosed as having? I don’t know. I have had lower back pain for years. One day I can move a mountain and the next I can’t cough or sneeze without doubling over. I broke my shoulder (upper humerus) once and self diagnosed it as a deep bruise. Had it a full month before I went to the doc and was told I cracked it. During that month–and beyond–I used the arm and shoulder, probably compensating by using the other arm and shoulder more than usual. Did she? I don’t know. She may be a cheat and a perpetrator of fraud. She may not be. I don’t know. We’ll see what the judge or jury says or whether she takes a deal.
I’m glad to see the cops in Cali have the time and resources available to bust one of their own for such a trivial matter. Apparently going after illegals is a little lower on the priority list.
If the only charge is being an illegal, what do they do with them after they arrest them? The Feds won’t do anything with them. They’re future dem voters, can’t upset them.
“One of their own” may be the department shitbag, and the budget will not allow a replacement as long as alleged shitbag is still on the books.
Could be true.
For worker’s comp fraud (which is all this is) you report it to them and let them handle it. Cops don’t usually get involved with medical insurance issues.
They do when the city is paying the bills. It may be that the city is self insured. In my state workman’s comp is run and funded by the state and funded by premiums paid by employers. There are no insurance companies involved. Workman’s comp fraud is stealing from the state, and they will certainly come after you.
Makes sense to me. I’d still like to see some time spent on actual dangerous criminals too…
I think the alleged shitbag was low-hanging fruit. There is also the possibility the case was turned over to the IG for follow up investigation. I am not making any claims regarding the particular department, just throwing some WAGs in there.
Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you.
Had a guy back home that made a living off of disability. He’d work a job for a month or so then get a “back injury” and hang out for 6mths to a year.
Unfortunately for him the last time he tried it on the company I worked for our boss didn’t take it lieing down. He contacted the insurance company I think it was and told them of this clowns history. The Insurance Co. promptly sent and investigator and caught the guy on film, who was so disabled with a lower back injury he couldn’t work, in his yard splitting wood with a 10lb splitting maul.
I cannot say if she is or is not guilty of being a fraud… Myself, I have Degenerative Joint Disease in both Lumbar and C-spine. I am not supposed to be doing a lot of things, especially with the knees and hips being crap too. I do things I shouldn’t, and I pay a price later. I do it for a number of reasons, all my own… and I dare someone to tell me I am “exaggerating” the injuries.
I have multiple x-rays and MRI’s, along with multiple Doctors across a spectrum of specialties to back it up.
Anyhow, if she is faking it… burn her ass. Seen my share of those embellishing an injury too.
Caught a first responder firemen, who due to a fall couldn’t carry a gallon of milk, bend over to the his shoes, etc. On his trip to Hawaii, the WC investigator video taped him carrying suitcases, body surfing and learning to hula dance. Lost his job, repay $167K in benefits, medical bills and ten in prison. Bet he’s bending over for Tom, Dick and Harry.
False claims that involve soft tissue injuries are mostly fake that crooked doctor are in on.
Real claims that involve broken bones, burns and surgery is what WC is for. Sad that people abuse and make it harder for the real injured.
